Introducing new products require work but it can be done. People are usually resistance to change until they see the result.
One will need to do intensive marketing from shops to shops or door to door to introduce the new products. With time it will be accepted.

@ jethro2 thanks for posting but is a month enough for the training cos I will like to join your training and start from cultivation to harvesting time, for me to be proud of doing it on my own...
Most vegetables mature between 4weeks to 3month. The month you trained from cultivation to harvesting depends on what vegetable you want to specialize on.
The most important stage in the history of vegetables is the nursery stages which is the first 21days.
Your nursery management is directly proportional to your yield.

yes o. but I think there's high demand during dry season if one can use irrigation system. moreover, ewedu and efo has less problem associated with it at least we jjc farmer can start from there. thanks
You are right.
Ewedu and Efo are scarce commodities during the dry season. Using irrigation makes a lot of difference and one makes more money

well done jare mama jethro. which type of irrigation system is good for vegetables like efo, ewedu e.t.c. cos ain't think drip irrigation system will so well serve purpose.
and also u ain't discussing bout efo and ewedu.
Farmers in my area use broadcasting method in planting efo and ewedu.
The irrigation that will best suit this is sprinkler irrigation or use quarter inch flexible pipes connected with shower heads.
Ewedu and Efo markets are not highly demanding all season round. The demand for it is mainly dry season period. Almost all farmers have ewedu and efo in their farm.
Its advisable to choose vegetable planting base on market demand

God bless u ma, indeed u av really reinforced my confidence dat i can bcom wot i want 2 bcom thru agriculture. However ma hw do u cope wit dis scarcity of rainfall.thanks e maa pe fun wa lagbara olorun.
Amen sir.
As regards rainfall, most countries have learnt to invest in irrigation which means more dams are constructed and boreholes were drilled.
As an intending farmer, the options are
1. Source for land near river side, dams or boreholes
2. As a farmer group, collectively one can contribute to drill a borehole.
Rain fall is gradually reducing over time. Clever farmers should work along with irrigation

AgricultureRe: Fresh Vegetable : One Stop Guarante Open Market by jethro2(op):
2. Tomatoes
Tomatoes like I use to say has no enemy.
Most varieties of tomatoes are generally accepted in the market but with variation in price.
Good quality tomatoes will be sold first before considering the low grades.
Most cases its not worth it going to market with a poor grade tomatoes.
The most popular varieties of tomatoes usually referred to as Hausa tomatoes in the market come from the stable of Technisem.
"The buffallo, Roma vf, Tropimech, etc.
The Yoruba Tomato also called kerewa and beske are from the old breeds.
The Yoruba tomato can only sell when there is no Hausa tomato in the market.
There are some other varieties from across the boarders. The quality are better and therefore command higher price than the Hausa tomatoes

Packaging
Hausa basket 50-55kg
Medium basket 30-35kg
Small basket 12-15kg

Price range
Hausa basket N3,000 -N25,000

1. Cucumber
There has been great increase in the demand for cucumber due to the discovery of its health benefits.
Cucumbers sell all the year in the market though the price flunctuates due to some demand and supply theory.
There are different types of cucumber varieties that matured at different time.
The most marketable in mile 12 at present is the "Marketer and Murano" variety a Technisem product.
Followed by the continental seed cucumber.
Any other product might likely be rejected or sold at a lower price compared to the current market price

Packaging
Cucumbers are sold with poultry feed bags of 25kg.
Though the cucumber content is between 30-35kg

Price Range
Price flunctuates between N1500 -N6,000 per bag.

Mile 12 Sales Agents
These are the people that sells for you in the market.
They display your wares at the different sections allocated to it.
They are paid on commission. Based on the prevailing market price.
And like we already said, price flunctuates in the market so the commissions vary with selling price

the vegetables you are talking of does it include ewedu, efo, ugwu and the likes cos it seems you ain't mentioning them.
I will list them.
But first thing first.
The information's are as important as the vegetables themselves.
There is no use going through the stress of planting and then your product get rejected.
Farmers and intending farmers need to understand the working system first.
AgricultureRe: Fresh Vegetable : One Stop Guarante Open Market by jethro2(op): 10:37pm On May 27, 2015
Your planting survey should start from market to farm.
Don't plant and start looking for market which is the norm with most farmers.
Planning from market to farm have the following advantages:
1. Plant vegetables that are in demand
2. Plan your planting to target the peak period
3. Using the right seed to avoid market rejects
4. Target customers need and work with it

Little About Mile 12 Market
The market is located in Lagos. Its one of the major markets for fresh vegetables.
Vegetable sellers come from far and near to buy produce from the Mile 12 market.
The market is mainly dominated by the northerners who work as agents/sales people.
Trailer loads of fresh vegetables are daily supply to Mile 12 from the North.
Vegetables like Tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, radish, tindy, marrow, green chilli, sweet pepper are some of mile 12 products.
How it works
Goods are brought in by the farmers to the agents/sales contact in the market.
Agents receive the goods and display for market women to buy.
Products are sold within the shortest possible time at the prevailing market price.
Cash from sales are sent to the farmer after deducting agent commission percentage.

Seed is one of the factors that greatly determine your harvest but not the sole determinant.
We will be discussing the other factors in some other time.
For now our focus is market link.

Which seed has been selected for this purpose?
Is it rionex from continental or technisem seeds?
No seed has been selected.
The essence of the write up is a guidance to seed selection and not to condemn or choose a particular seed.
Every seed has got their unique nature. That's why the term "varieties" is use in describing seeds.
e.g A seed might perform well in farmer A's plot and the same seed could mess up farmer B's plot despite using the same method.

Tomatoes dont have specified demand. However, it is sold in grades. The big, the firm, etc. The quality determine the price.
All varieties can be planted but quality dictates price in the market

How to select seed for planting
There are several seed importers and sellers at present in Nigeria.
1. The Technisem Seed
(Saving farmers since ages)
2. East West Seed
3 Continental seed
4. Syngenta seed
5. Others

Seed selection is determined by the market demand.
Most intending farmers purchase seed base on the expected yield per hectare/acre.
With the mind that the returns will be much.

The fact that an expected yield of a certain vegetable is much does not mean that the market will accept it.

The utmost aim for all farmers is to make profit.
Farmers make profit from what they can sell at a reasonable price.
Your selling price must be higher than your cost price
"Why plant when the market will reject it"?
The market must accept our products before we can sell to make reasonable profit.

What we learned;
Seed selection is determined by the market demand variety
