The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has resigned, Channels Television learnt on Monday.

Sources told Channels Television that Justice Muhammad resigned on Sunday night, citing ill-health as the reason for his decision.

Information also has it that arrangements are ongoing to swear in the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

According to reports, a formal announcement will be made shortly.

Until his resignation, reports had it that Justice Muhammad was seriously ill.

Only last week, 14 justices of the Supreme Court had written him a letter to lament the decrepit state of affairs in the apex court.

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has lambasted some of the supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, who accused him of having received bribes for criticising the politician.


Adeyanju had in several tweets called out Obi's supporters, describing them as 'crazy online fans' who go about bullying others, especially those who are against Obi's candidacy.

Obi had announced his departure from Nigeria to Egypt to understudy the Egyptian Power Sector, Education, Planning and Finance Sectors.

However, Adeyanju took to his Twitter handle to condemn this move, noting that it had come at the wrong time. He stated that Obi should have been on his way to Ekiti to support the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the election.

Adeyanju, in other tweets, also condemned Obi's political strategies as he advised him to form an alliance with Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People's Party for election victory against the candidates of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. He also advised Obi to avoid online campaigns.

The activist had come under fire for uttering such statements but he insisted that Obi had declared his intention to run for a public office and public office holders are subject to criticism.

Meanwhile, some supporters of Obi accused Adeyanju of having received bribes which allegedly fuelled some of his criticisms of their preferred candidate.

Reacting in a now-deleted tweet, Adeyanju debunked the allegation, adding that he met with Obi recently and the latter offered him money which he rejected.

His tweet reads, “To the supporters of Obi saying may be I got alert that is why I'm now criticizing him, go and ask him; I meet him recently. He offered me money and rejected it. I told him money has never been my problem and can never be my problem. Na we dey even bring money to support people."

Adeyanju, in another tweet, said he deleted the tweet because it was not necessary as he advised Obi's supporters to focus on how to sell their candidate without resorting to bullying or insulting others online.

He tweeted, “Had to just delete those tweets. Completely unnecessary. You all should just market Peter Obi without insulting anyone. Also, accept criticisms from those who criticize him. Try to win people over with strong arguments and not insults."

He also explained that not everyone who criticises a candidate has been paid for doing such.

APC appears to be in a very difficult and disadvantaged situation. Tinubu is a minority Muslim from the South and he must pick his Vice from the North. Unfortunately for him, he cannot also pick the minority in the North, if his party must win and many people won’t like it.

Especially the majority Christian from the South, appears to be more concerned about this than the minority from the North, who are directly affected. There’s no strong Christian in the North to guarantee him block votes. Dicey.

It’s either Tinubu picks a Northern Muslim to boost his chance or Northern Christian to lose majority votes in the North. But his strongest enemies are southerners. Such a difficult situation for this man.

The ultimate beneficiaries of this situation are Obi and Atiku. If Tinubu picks a Muslim from the North, he risks losing many votes from the majority of Christians in the South to either Atiku or Obi. If he picks a Christian, majority of Muslims on the North may not vote APC.

A popular Islamic preacher from the north, Sheikh Yahya Masussuka, has rejected the clamour for a Muslim-Muslim ticket, being canvassed by some stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The cleric declared that those pushing for a Muslim-Muslim ticket are agents of injustice and enemies of peace, as according to him, they are acting at variance with the tenets of Islam.

SaharaReporters had on Tuesday reported that an Islamic preacher from northern Nigeria warned against pairing Tinubu with a Christian from the northern region as his running mate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The preacher and some others like him had threatened to mobilise Muslims to reject Tinubu and the APC during the forthcoming presidential election.

Similarly, SaharaReporters earlier reported on Tuesday that the ruling APC may force a Muslim-Muslim ticket on Nigerians as Tinubu’s camp narrowed down to Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno, to be his running mate.

Reacting to these developments, Masussuka in a viral video, insisted that competence, justice and physical fitness were the qualities outlined in the Islamic traditions to guide Muslims in choosing a leader.

The Sheikh argued that in Nigeria, going by the demographics of religion it was impossible for either Muslims or Christians to do it alone in the political sphere.

He said, "it is another political season in Nigeria and we have the honour to give guidelines; we are taught by our statutes that justice precedes prayer either in the Islamic or Christian faith.

"I'm sending this sermon to both Muslim and Christian listeners, urging you to avoid either Muslim or Christian clerics who emphasise religion in their divisive sermons for political gains.

"Don't be deceived, in Islam competence and justice form the yardstick and not religious practices. Those advocating Muslim-Muslim ticket for Nigeria's nest presidency are doing a disservice to our religion, because Islam promotes justice and peace.

"I make bold to say this because Nigeria is a heterogeneous country with Muslims and Christians represented in large numbers. It is therefore unthinkable for anyone to contemplate fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket and think he's being Islamic in conduct.

"Nigeria needs competent and just leaders who would do justice to all manner of people regardless of religious considerations", he said.

After congratulating Tinubu for emerging as the APC presidential candidate, a radical Muslim who identified himself as Aminu Jetaun, cautioned him against considering a northern Christian as his running mate.

He said, "You, Tinubu, make no mistake about this; do not pick a Christian as your running mate because we've yet to completely trust your own version of Islam."

The issue has been a major subject of discourse since the election of Tinubu as the APC presidential candidate. It has dominated sermons in many mosques in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Our correspondent observed that some clerics have been urging their congregants and indeed Muslim faithful to reject the APC if Tinubu is paired with a Christian from the region.
