Modu Malaram, a former fighter of Boko Haram has explained why he other members of the terrorists groups surrendered to the troops of the Nigerian Army in Borno State.

According to PR Nigeria, Malaram from is among the former fighters of Boko Haram who surrendered to Nigerian troops in Konduga on Monday.

Malaram quoted the ‘repentant’ Boko Haram member as saying that some members were forced to join the terrorist group when they were teenagers and are therefore using the advantage of the disarray in leadership of the insurgent group to run away.

He said, “Wallahi, most of us were young or weak to fight the Boko Haram Commanders who picked us from our villages.

“All the while, we knew the group is evil, but could not fight or protest because we could have been killed. Those that attempted to flee were summarily executed in our presence.

“Even though I, my wife and my child have surrendered, I am not sure if the people in our village would trust us again.”

On what gave them the gut to come out and ‘publicly’ surrender, Malaram said the division between the terrorists’ groups distracted their Commanders, and emboldened members like him to become ‘recalcitrant’.

Hence, summoning the courage to quit his membership of the sect.

“After the death of Shekau, there were infighting and divisions, which made some of us happy. And then, the aerial bombardments by the military were sustained which forced many of us to flee our forests’ camps. This is what made us to come out and surrender,” he added.

Malaram and 41 other persons made up of ex – fighters of Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP)surrendered on Monday.

According to PRNigeria the ‘repentant’ terrorists ‘publicly’ renounced their membership yesterday, at Konduga Local Government Area in Borno State.

They thereafter, turned in themselves to the Battalion Commanders and troops of Operation Hadin Kai.

According to a military intelligence operative, who craved anonymity, the former Boko Haram members, however did not surrender themselves together with their weapons.

“Among the 45 terrorists’ members who surrendered, 21 are from Garin Dinya and 24 from jaja kalwa villages,” he said.

Nigerian Army said on Monday that over 1,000 Boko Haram members and their families have surrendered to troops in the past week.

The ex-terror group members include the terror group’s chief bomb expert, known as Musa Adamu, aka Mala Musa Abuja, and his second-in-command, Usman Adamu, aka Abu Darda, surrendered to troops in Bama local government area of Borno State.

Army gave the breakdown of the former Boko Haram members now in its custody to include 335 terrorists, and members of their families, totaling 746 women and children.

The acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division and Commander Sector 1 Operation Hadin Kai, Brigadier General Abdulwahab Eyitayo, visited Headquarters 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama on Saturday, August 7 to receive the former terrorists and their families.

Eyitayo said the ex-Boko Haram members will undergo some rehabilitation process at a government facility before reintegration into the larger society.

The Imo State Police Command on Tuesday said its operatives have arrested one Ikechukeu Umaefulem, the “Chief Priest” of the Eastern Security Network, the security arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

According to Abattam, exhibits recovered from the suspects included one pump action gun with five round of live cartridges, one improvised explosives device, knockouts, gun powder, Biafran flag and other spiritual items in like manner.

The statement read, “One of the suspect’s revealed that they now patronises spiritual homes for attacking police stations and led the ever active Imo Command’s tactical teams to the home of one Ikechukeu Umaefulem, the Chief Priest and Spiritual leader of Life Sabbath Synagogue Amii, Akabo in Ikeduru LGA, Imo State, where he was arrested.

“When his spiritual home and premises was searched, the following items were recovered, they are, One pump action gun with five round of live cartridges, One Improvised Explosives Device, Knockouts, Gun Powder, Biafran Flag and other spiritual items.

“In like manner, it would be recall that on 25/7/2021, at about 1920 hours, IPOB/ESN terror groups killed their juju priest, one Paschal Okeke of Umudim Ukwu Orji Awomama in Oru East LGA of Imo State. They excised the head, burned the body and his house for the futile efficacy of the charms he had given the group over time and the colossal failure of the charms to protect them from police bullets.

“Meanwhile, the arrested spiritualist is in custody, under going interrogation and is assisting the police tremendously with information that will lead to the discovery of the remnants of their camps and arrest of other members of the group in hiding.

“Machineries have been put in motion and very soon the command will start harvesting the remnants of the terror groups in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, commended the officers and men for their proactiveness and urged them not to relent until the terror groups are completely neutralised in the state. In the same vain, assured Imolites of the command’s commitment in ensuring that the already achieved peace will be sustained and improved upon in the state.”

All goods seized from smugglers are sent to internally displaced persons camps across the country, Katsina State Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Services has said.

Dalha Wada said this to PREMIUM TIMES in a brief interview at the sideline of a security meeting in Katsina on Tuesday.

“Even today (Tuesday), the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry is coming to take delivery of some of these seized goods on humanitarian grounds. All textile materials and food items now go straight to IDP camps. We don’t benefit from such goods. And I will personally invite you to see them (goods) being taken today,” Mr Wada said.

He said more than four states, including Borno and Yobe, have received from contraband impounded in Katsina.

Mr Wada said the goods, when taken to such states, were taken directly to IDP camps.

He said from March this year when he assumed control of the command, goods worth N454, 990, 129 had been impounded.

Mr Wada said the officers of the service engage in raid to ensure smuggled goods are taken away.

He said they only break into stores after gathering intelligence from reliable people, noting that the law backs the Service to conduct such raids.

“Section 147 empowers you to search premises when you have an intelligence report of a smuggler keeping contraband. Section 148 empowers you to go into a licensed premises. Section 149 says you can stop a vehicle or ship to check for contraband.

“We don’t give prior notice to people we are suspecting because we want to be sure that we get what we want to seize. We also don’t give search warrant because that is what the law says. And we can break in at any time of the day.”

Commenting on Tuesday’s accident involving officers of the service in which at least six persons died, Mr Wada said an investigation was going on to unravel the truth.

“We are not just sleeping over it. I have ordered a full scale investigation. The preliminary report we got said the officers were going back to their check point when the vehicle developed brake fault, but we have started investigation into what really happened.”

He also noted that the accident involved officers on the border drill duty being supervised directly from the office of the National Security Adviser, noting that the NSA office has also started investigation on the accident.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have reportedly burnt alive a passenger in Nkwogu, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State for flouting the sit-at-home order issued by the group.

It was gathered that commercial activities in most parts of the state were grounded as residents obeyed the order for their safety.

Daily Trust reported that students were prevented from taking the National Examination Council (NECO) examination as schools were shut.

The victim, it was gathered, was in one of three buses that were torched by a mob.

Two of the vehicles, Hummer Buses, belonging to a popular transport company, Libra, were coming from Umuahia, Abia State capital when they ran into a group of hoodlums suspected to be members of IPOB.

It was gathered that they shot at the tyres, which forced the bus to stop.

The passengers of the buses scuttled to safety, while one of the drivers was reportedly shot in the hip.

The passenger could not escape before the bus was burnt.

It was also reported that there was heavy shooting around Banana junction along Orlu-Owerri Road as gunmen engaged security agents in a shoot-out.

The Kaduna government says four “notorious” bandits have been killed by security forces in Igabi LGA of the state.

Samuel Aruwan, the Kaduna state commissioner for internal security and home affairs, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

Aruwan said the bandits were killed in a valley popularly known as ‘Maikwandaraso’.

He said the bandits were eliminated via a combination of ground and air assaults on bandit enclaves.

He identified the “notorious” bandits as Alili Bandiro, Dayyabu Bala, Bala Nagwarjo, and Sulele Bala.

The commissioner added that several other bandits were also killed during the operation.

“Following the ongoing military operations against armed bandits, and painstaking human intelligence checks, it has been confirmed that four notorious bandits were neutralized in a valley popularly known as ‘Maikwandaraso’Local Government Area,” the statement reads.

“Maikwandaraso is close to Karshi village, and shares boundaries with the infamous Kawara and Malul forests in the same Igabi LGA, which have been identified as the hub of several armed bandit camps and hideouts.”

The commissioner said Nasir El-Rufai, governor of the state, expressed satisfaction at the development and thanked the military for their efforts at ridding the areas of armed bandits.

“The governor commended the troops and personnel involved in the successful strikes, and encouraged them to sustain the tempo of operations towards a comprehensive sweep of all hideouts,” he added.

Justice Gideon Kurada of the Kaduna State High Court has acquitted and discharged the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El- Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat Ibrahim who have been standing trial in the court for the past four years.

In a judgement delivered on Wednesday, Justice Kurada said the case was not shown nor proven by the prosecutor.

El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, are standing trial on eight counts bordering on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace, among others.

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The couple have been in detention since 2015, after IMN supporters clashed with soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna.

Operatives of Imo State Police Command, have arrested one Obumneke Gabriel, for being a member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) linked to Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Disclosing this development in a statement, Micheal Abattam, the spokesperson of the police command, said Gabriel was arrested at Amaraku in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state on Monday, July 26, 2021.

According to Abattam, exhibits recovered from the suspects include -a locally made double barrel pistol loaded with ten rounds of live cartridges and two expended cartridges.

On how the suspect was nabbed, Abattam explained that “following information received that some of the remnants of the IPOB/ESN terror groups, after the decimation of their camps, are seen roving about and robbing innocent people on the road around Umueli Amaraku in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State.

“The Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Command’s Operation Search and Flush teams to embark on a vigorous and results-oriented stop and search operation within the area.”

Continuing, he added: “On 26/7/2021 at about 1830 hours, a team of Operation Search and Flush operatives comprising of Police and NDLEA arrested one Obumneke Gabriel “M ” of Umueli Amaraku in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State. When he was searched, a locally made double barrel pistol loaded with ten (10) rounds of live cartridges and two expended cartridges were recovered from him to the station.

“When interrogated, the suspect confessed to being a member of the proscribed IPOB/ESN terror group and has volunteered useful information that will lead to the arrest of his other members. An investigation is ongoing and the command is working tirelessly to neutralise all terror groups in the state.”

President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, has expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the French-speaking West African nation and Nigeria.

Talon also said Benin Republic was ready to revitalise its relationship with Germany, Ghana, Gabon and Norway.

He made this known on Tuesday when he received the new ambassadors from the five countries.

The envoys also presented their letters of credence to the Beninese President. They are Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) from Nigeria, Christine Churcher (Ghana), Michael Derus (Germany), Sayid Abeloko (Gabon), and Knut Lein (Norway).

In a statement, the Beninese Government said Talon granted audience to each of the new ambassadors and discussed with them the revitalisation and strengthening of bilateral cooperation between these different countries and Benin.

Talon was also said to have received a brief update on the state of cooperation between Benin, Nigeria and the other countries, and expressed his availability to assist them in their respective missions.

“The President of the Republic also took the opportunity to invite the new Ambassadors to work more on consolidating and strengthening the warm relations that already exist between their countries and Benin,” the statement added.

Buratai’s meeting with the Beninese President occurred amid the planned extradition of wanted Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

It was, however, not clear whether or not Buratai discussed Igboho’s extradition with the Beninese President.

Buratai, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff between July 2015 and January 2021, was deployed as Nigeria’s envoy in the Benin Republic in June 2021.

Igboho, an arrowhead of the secessionist agitation for Yoruba nation, has been in detention since July 19, 2021 when he was arrested by Interpol at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou around 8pm. He was arrested when he tried to catch a flight to Germany.

Igboho was arrested after the Nigerian Government notified its West African neighbours – including Benin Republic – that he should be hunted.

He was arrested with his wife, Ropo, but the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered the release of the Germany-based wife of the activist, saying there were no allegations against her.

The Beninese court, on Monday, however, ordered that Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the country while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator. He was accused to have entered Benin Republic illegally as well as alleged planned intent to cause social unrest in Benin Republic.

Benin Republic attained its full independence on August 1, 1960, some months before Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960.

The two West African countries are strategic economic partners as traders from both countries transact businesses fluidly at the Seme-Badagry corridor, which has become one of the most popular borders for trans-regional economic exchanges.

Due to proximity, the two countries also share certain similarities like culture, religion and tribe. Some cross-marriages have also occurred between citizens of both countries.

A Finland-based member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, has said the Biafran agitation is no longer within the reach of the members and supporters.

The recently sacked Radio Biafra broadcaster declared that the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra was now in its “dangerous phase.”

Ekpa made the disclosure on Wednesday via a post on his official Facebook page.

Kanu, who is facing the trial of treasonable felony and terrorism, was slated to appear before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday but could not be produced by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) as a result of alleged logistics reasons.

The incident has resulted in widespread criticisms and anxieties among concerned Nigerians who accused the Nigerian Government of deliberately delaying the trial to keep the separatist leader in detention.

Simon Ekpa, a Finnish who has been silent for a while, said he is set to change the narrative of the current struggle.

The post reads, “The Biafra struggle has entered the AUTOPILOT phase, a very dangerous phase that we have no control of what happens. To your tent oh Israel.

“I am Simon Ekpa, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple on Biafra restoration. Changing the narrative of Yesterday.”

A suspected bandit, Bello Galadima, has been arrested by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Sokoto state.

Saleh Dada, the commandant of NSCDC in the state, told journalists of his arrest on Wednesday.

The NSCDC commandant said Galadima, 40, had been on the wanted list.

Dada said that the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday at his hideout at Aliyu Jodi in Sokoto metropolis.

The commandant said that the suspect was arrested when he came out to buy drugs, mostly sexual enhancing medicaments for his group members.

He explained that the suspect’s arrest followed an intelligence report on his activities and movement of his group members around the Hamma Ali community.

The commandant commended the community for providing information on security challenges in their environment and assured them of maximum protection.

Islamic faithful on social media have condemned a statement by Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, comparing the travails of Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) to Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W).

In a statement issued on Monday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere had noted that there was nothing wrong with Igboho seeking asylum out of the country where his safety could be guaranteed.

Afenifere had said there was nothing wrong with this intention, saying, “We recall that Moses had to be taken away from the prying eyes of Pharaoh and his agents in Egypt. Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) too had to leave his hometown, Mecca for Medina in order to escape persecution.

“Thus, there is nothing wrong in Igboho seeking a respite first to preserve his life and perhaps to re-strategise.”

The Afenifere’s statement has attracted a lot of backlash from Muslim faithfuls on social media who said the Prophet’s movement was given a wrong interpretation by the Yoruba group.

On Twitter, Alabi Erundupe @AlFinladly wrote, “It is Islamically wrong to make the comparison. At least, Igboho should be compared to Ogun, Sango, Obatala et al since he has openly declared his allegiance to them.”

A Facebook user, Hamid Ullah Jan explained, “Prophet Mohammed never fled. He left Makkah because it was ordained to Him by Almighty Allah. Qur'an witnesses that Prophet Mohammed never did anything from His own. He did what is ordained to Him.

“We understand your pain. This pain is felt by your forefathers the day Prophet Mohammed conquered Makkah and crushed down your forefathers made worshipping idols. May peace mercy and blessings of Almighty be upon Him.”

Owolabi Ghafar noted, “The punishment of our creator is more severe than your so-called government. Never compare anybody with the Prophet S.A.W – even any of the prophets. I seek for forgiveness from Allah.”

Jamilu Iyatawa said, “This comparison is baseless! Prophet Muhammad never left Mecca to Medina just in fear of persecution, he rather left it so that he will worship his God, as people of Mecca by that time worships idols.

“But, to that of Igboho, he runs to Benin in fear of persecution because he knows what he has done is treason.

“When Igboho migrated to Benin trying to smuggle himself to Germany, he was arrested, tortured, molested, handcuffed and sent to police cell. But to that of Prophet Muhammad, he was kind-hearted, welcomed, and well-received by all peoples of Medina.”

The Tiv Youth Council Worldwide has asked Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to concentrate on providing good governance and responsible leadership for the people of the state instead of chasing the wind in the name of attacking President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group, in a press statement issued yesterday by its president, Hon Mike Msuaan, wondered why the governor would be using the name of the president to make headlines at any slightest opportunity while issues of governance are left unattended.

The Tiv group described the accusations leveled against President Buhari by the governor as “hypocrisy driven to a rather ridiculous height.”

“It is curious that the governor who has used apparatus of state to intimidate critics from interrogating his inability to provide basic amenities for the people of Benue will turn round to accuse the president of intimidating critics.

“We expect the governor to get busy with fashioning out a solution to the militia killings in Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo local government areas of the state and the protracted communal crisis in Bonta, Konshisha LGA and Oju which has led to the destruction of several lives and property worth millions of Naira. The ongoing Ipiav and Yandev communal clashes in Gboko LGA and many other crises should get a chief executive busy”, the group said.

Vanguard had reported how the Department of State Services, DSS, could not produce the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu before the Federal High Court in Abuja for continuation of his trial.

The supporters were asked to go outside the court premises.

However, when they converged again, the security operatives were forced to disperse them.
