So last week friday, I pitched our services to events I saw online, and I'm amazed at the response. Like I mentioned in my previous post, don't always assume the worst of everything in event business. I mean, brands are looking to cut cost but still maintain good quality, so write them, infact if it is possible to send a detailed plan of what you can do for them, possibly visual (Graphic 2D or 3D) and give them a very good cost for the service, make sure the profit you want to make from the job is not excessive. I realized with the economic crisis in Nigeria right now, brands are willing to hear other ideas besides the event company they retained. Perhaps they considered their cost too expensive or unrealistic due to the economic crisis. So my advice is, do research on the event calendar of companies you'd like to work with. Also you must understand, its not easy to come across such details as most company keep it on the low and its mostly their staffs that can provide you with the details, so if you can friends that work in these companies ask them, be aggressive in your marketing. Perhaps you could just go by traditional marketing, look up upcoming events in Lagos or any other states if you can travel there. It works honestly, the feedback may not be as expected but you can sign up atleast one events per month from this process. Be dynamic, be up-to-date, have a plan for them even before you write them, if they tell you they have an event outfit that manage their event, ask if you can propose something for them they'd be interested in. Some may find it rude and some might be willing to hear you out. PS: if you have any tip you want to share don't hesitate, we are all here to learn, get jobs too.. Ciao |

Nice one guys. I appreciate the interest, but this thread is not just about posting your outfit, I want you guys share your experiences and let other learn from them and you can share tips. I'd like to share a very important tip for anyone who are vendors for gigs, concerts and so on. I know a lot of people must have had crazy experiences with Award, Concert, movie premiere etc organizers, most especially when they are big names in the entertainment industry. The big names in the entertainment industry related to the genre of events I aforementioned have huge budgets but their planners always want to cut cost and in the process, they push forward "BARTER" to vendors for the event instead of full payment of which in most cases, they don't pay and the vendor would have to run at a loss. Now here is a simple solution, I came up with. Since Big Brands are well known the society, a Barter may not be a bad idea, infact it is a very good leverage or scheme to enable you add them to your clientele. I'm sure you have a question like, "These people can afford what I am offering?" The answers is YES, but you have to remember, how much influence their names could be for your brand. Now its not as simple as it might seem, since most term of barters may be different depending on the type of event. So before you consent to any barter, first ask for the following factors below; 1. Will there be a Brochure during the event? 2. if Yes, Can they give full page for the advertisement of your brand? (usually they'd allow only logo's but try and convince them, if they don't ask for a smaller size) 2. Can they allow you set-up your rollup banner? 3. Can they allow your logo on their Step & repeat banner? 4. Can they mention your on most of their publications either online or offline. (usually they don't consent to this but their chances some might depending on the importance of your service to them) 5. What is the strength of their promotion for the event? 6. Who are the GUESTS (very important you know this) If they allow some of the terms I listed here for you, then you will gain more than what they can ever offer you. You would also get better jobs from not-so-well-known brands but they are willing and capable of paying you double what you offered the big brands. Note that Big brands want to cut costs as much as possible so make sure your mark-up is realistic and probably low. So far, I will leave you with few tips for now, so if any other person has more they can share. if you like the tip I shared, you can leave a thank but also share yours and if you want anyone to use your services, you can post your strength probably someone can call you up... Career / He Took Entrepreneurship To New Height by jidesp(m): 8:38pm On Oct 08, 2015 |
Have you noticed that a lot of Nigerian youth shy away from craftsmanship. Infact, most Nigerian youth would rather go with professions that trends and pay the bills but don't move them up the ladder of wealth like they'd hoped. I discovered a guy who has taken entrepreneurship to new heights. He told me his story and I was surprised. He said he realized Wallpaper started trending in Nigeria and no one was paying well for a good paint job. So he did some research, learned a few techniques and developed it. Now he can replicate a wallpaper with paint. He would modify scrap i.e Plastics, metal, books etc to create pattern on a wall. Not very easy but its always fun for him to see his client happy. At some point, things start to seem like they are moving slow again, so he decided it was time to change strategy and changed his approach to his business like been Formal with clients, mode of dressing to meetings, uses email services, social media to engage people and he doesn't add a dime to the cost of Materials which is the same in the Market close to his client, he said he believes people value honesty and would always want to work with him because of his principles. He thinks he might offer training soon, but isn't sure when yet, but would definitely love to see other young people follow his steps and do better. I was surprised when he told me he worked with few noble people and brands like AY Comedian's Wife, Helen Paul, Splash, Nedu Wazobia FM, Planet TV etc.. Below are some of his work. His works are neat and unique. I've observed him transitioned from traditional style to modern day style of painting, he is very good at matching colors with interiors. He is not your typical painters that would rather compromise quality because they wants to gain from their clients. The great thing is, he is affordable. I can tell you he is someone to work with, if you want to paint your home this XMAS, NEW YEAR, NEW HOUSE, NEW APARTMENTS, KIDS ROOM, KITCHEN, NEW OFFICE, WHOLE BUILDING Below are some of his paintings Painting Not Wall Paper @seun @Lalasticlala |

betacitizen: I do agree with you 100%. The fear of the cost of litigation is evidently enough to make many Nigerians suppress their fundamental human rights. My post basically was just to give anyone who read it a sense of liberty even if it is just for a spit second. BTW based on Observation from most of the comments, most of our youth primitive orientation is very much an influence of our slow growth as a country... |
Career / Re: How To React If Your Boss always Slaps You For A Minor Mistake? by jidesp(m): 8:52pm On Jul 17, 2015 |
betacitizen: Yes, ironically, we are both right lol. because in some jurisdictions, assault and battery are often paired together as one offense. I believe the reason is because when someone commits battery they usually have the intent to harm, and threaten the person before committing the physical act. The intent or threat to harm is assault while performing the intent is battery. BTW I like the contribution, thanks for pointing that out I'm not a lawyer though, I just love studying the the rules of law, applications and so on. Its just sad that many Nigerians would rather suppress fundamental human right because of the fear of losing their job and rather keep quite I know many people on here would find my comments or post extreme, but its these fears that our police feeds on and thinks they are the law and not just agents of the law. |

teeowl: It is very bad to assume such negative results. To be honest, the fear of the tables being turned against you alone is not sufficient enough to suppress your fundamental human rights. Take the step first and whatever happens next should be the judge of what next to do again. |
Career / Re: How To React If Your Boss always Slaps You For A Minor Mistake? by jidesp(m): 5:10pm On Jul 17, 2015 |
magicminister: I don't think you followed the story very much. The case never made it to trial because the guy didn't want to anymore. I presumed they had a backdoor discuss where a compensation or an agreement was reached. And I am very sure he would have signed a confidentiality agreement that would limit him from discussing the issue any further after been compesated. Now, your assumption based on the fact that Nigeria is still a very backward nation is a reflection that you would rather break the law than see the right things done. Let me also clear one fact, before I made my post I had read a lot of issues relating to what I quoted and had to come with this conclusion because not so many Nigerians reads the constitution and what it stands for. Ok let me help you on that. The Constitution itself limits the power which sovereign authority has, in simpler terms, it gives people it is applicable to a means to reflect on their right and not live in fear of being abused. Nigeria is a country, not an attitude, So please, enough lecture about telling me this is Nigeria, because if you keep saying that, you can as well open the dictionary to check what civil or democracy means. We have gotten so many things wrong and I don't blame many people for thinking this way. @defemidefemi to the extent of 0.025%, I agree with you, and the reason is because The Law itself has several limitations which powerful or influential people takes advantages of. But It doesn't change the fact that we should stand for our right, and also Law is changing in Nigeria, particularly lagos, there are lawyers who are willing to go extra-miles just to see justice done probono. Also you cited an English Maxim "where two equity are equal the first in time prevail". In a case like this, this is a very wrong Maxim to cite because Equity isn't equal because the employee didn't retaliate. You should be careful when you quote maxims, it could totally crumble your case the very instance it begins. Also if you read the title correctly, I stated "Minor Mistakes", Equity cannot justify the Boss action based on Minor Mistakes because by slapping his employee, he/she has first Violated the employee's fundamental human rights as a citizen of Nigeria, also could also be charged with assault. Here are also few lines from the Nigerian Labour Act 1990 46. (1) Any employer who neglects or ill-treats any worker whom he has contracted to employ in accordance with this Part of this Act shall be guilty of an offence, and on conviction shall be liable to a fine not exceeding N500 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year, or to both. (2) Where an employer or his agent is convicted of any offence under subsection (1) of this section, the convicting court shall report the case to the Minister, who may by notice in the Federal Gazette cancel any contract into which the employer or his agent may have entered in accordance with this Part of this Act. (3) Any cancellation under subsection (2) of this section shall have effect from the date of the publication of the relevant notice. (4) Every worker whose contract has been cancelled under subsection (2) of this section shall be maintained and conveyed to his place of abode (together with any members of his family who have accompanied him) at the expense of the Federal Government, and all sums reasonably expended upon the maintenance and conveyance, together with any wages due to the worker under the cancelled contract, may be recovered from the employer or his agent by deduction from any deposit or security given under section 24 (7) of this Act or by civil proceedings. (5) The cancellation of a contract under this section shall not prevent the taking of legal proceedings in respect of the contract under this or any other enactment. To be honest with you, even something as small as a pinch for doing a minor wrong could be considered assault. One more thing, if you report a case like this to the police and they turn you down or beat you in the process, don't get angry, get a phone or an audio or video recording devices and read your fundamental human rights as stated, word for word in the constitution relating to the issue at that instance to the Police officers present. And If the police officers then say anything contrary or beats you after you read your rights, then they are non-verbally expressing supremacy over the provision of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria which is contrary to Sect 1(1) that states that "The Constitution is supreme and its provisions shall have binding force on the authorities and persons throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria". @INTROVERT Whether Major or Minor mistakes, it still doesn't change the fact that the law was broken. By Slapping an employee. While this is done, the employee could be held for different charges for letting something that costs the company huge loss happened. Courts treats cases step by step and not bundled so as to give a fair hearing. |

dearpreye: Propaganda is a consistent and necessary factor in Politics, PDP did the same things, even while they were debased from their high and mighty position. Now my point is, in politics there is no winning formula until it is winning realistically. Believe me, to effectively put Nigeria back on a steady surface, it must continue to change its system until a new candidate gets it right. I won't be prejudice about this issue. If Buhari gets it wrong during his tenure, I will vote another candidate that makes a better promise. There are things most politicians fail to understand, they embark on fruitless projects trying to show Nigerians they are working but the honest truth is, no one can satisfy human wants. They need to start showing Nigeria what Patriotism is like, the Government can't do it alone. How many times has the Government recognize grassroots for their efforts in their society, The police men, soldiers that died in combat, we forget these importance too quickly, where are statue that.. People needs to be motivated, people need to feel like the Government truly understand their needs. After Election, our government don't feel the need to promote their ideals because they are in power. Former Governor Fashola was consistent, he understood this and used the knowledge effectively, every Lagosian felt like they were in touch with him, that wasn't the case with Former president Jonathan. I will give him one thing, he had a plan, but not a glue(people he employed) to put it together. Buhari was once a Military president, so I could understand how far he would go to make sure people do his bidding which is good for me for now. But if he fails, I will vote for another candidate. |

Career / How To React If Your Boss always Slaps You For A Minor Mistake? by jidesp(m): 1:20pm On Jul 12, 2015 |
I wish this makes FrontPage though I just had to post this. I hope every employer and employee can learn from it and put their acts together and fulfil their obligations without prejudice.. I know because our people are far backward, even some so called educated people wouldn't dare learn anything outside their main, It is a bad idea doing that. Man must continue learning, it is the only way to keep whatever is Natural about man in existence, we must evolve. Ooops sorry for taking your through my brooding. OK I want you any Employee to understand this due to a question raised so many times on Nairaland. In Nigeria, If your boss strikes you, then he/she has committed assault and you need to file charges. Calmly call the police and file a report. The police are likely to come and take a statement. If there is a great deal of evidence (mark on your face, a cut, witnesses to the event, etc) your boss will be arrested and taken to jail. You may be terminated; however most companies wouldn't dare to immediately fire an employee who was struck by a member of the management team. They would instead start an investigation, which would likely lead to the termination of the manager. Even if the police do not arrest your employer, contact your HR department immediately. Tell them what occurred and strongly request that action be taken. Also, ask for the remainder of the day for personal reasons and contact an attorney. You may have the makings of a civil suit against both your boss as well as the company. Do NOT hit your boss back. The urge to do so will be great, but you need to be the mature and professional person in this situation that your supervisor was not. Call the authorities and let them handle this. 26 Likes 8 Shares |

LadyBoss1: I am sorry to say, but it is important to know that there laws guiding labor in Nigeria. You have openly admitted to the crime on here and could be admissible in a proceedings against you and also a lawyer could decide to teach you a lesson because of your utterance here. Believe me, in as much lawyers look for big breaks, they do humanitarian works anything to land them in news and make them popular. You heard of Pro Bono cases. Perhaps as an employer you should read the 1990 Nigeria Labor Act to help you understand how to treat your employees. You could be held accountable for assault. It won't cost you much to just either correct them properly than making them feel inferior which the Magistrate hates too. Play safe henceforth OK...Ciao. |

Benedict44: I hope my advice help It is not justifiable to slap an Employee. Lets run a case study, just because a man marries a woman doesn't mean he can violate her right by beating her. OK lets have a closer look at something more flesh and blood. If you beat your kid, you can be held accountable at law for violating his right. No one is above the law, your boss is only higher than you in position only within the premises of the office and nowhere else and also when you signed your agreement to work with the company, I want to believe it wasn't stated that employees could be physically or abusively dealt with when wrong. if it was in the contract you signed, then your claim would be justified only to some extent apparently not much, except you have a photographic proof of your face bruised from the hot slap. lol of which I doubt you had Now, my advice to you is not to return the slap on Monday, but inform her that you would be filing a lawsuit against her for violating your Civil right or you would report to the Police and that your claim is she abused her position as your superior at the company and she physically abused you. oh and one more thing, if there are no witnesses at the office, you can as well kiss everything I wrote goodbye, cos your claim would be invalid in court if no one witnessed it. That would give your boss the upper hand and they could claim that you're trying to make money off her bla bla.. Also, it won't cost you much to buy the 1999 constitution of Nigeria and know your Civil Rights and duties as a citizen of Nigeria or you can just read the 1990 Nigeria Labor act to help you understand when an employer is playing wayo on you and also when you are wrong too and playing wayo on your employer. here is a link if you want http://www.nigeria-law.org/LabourAct.htm Ubi Jus Ubi remedium - Where there is Law, there is a remedy |
