INTRODUCTION Education is a right of every individual. It unlocks the development of personal and national potentials of citizens of a country and the world at large. Currently, emphasis is shifting away from the general education that encourages mere acquisition of certificates to skill-based education which centres more on what one can do and the ability to apply requisite skill in real work environment. In Nigeria, the rising unemployment has helped to heighten the need for vocational and technical education. This article therefore discusses the importance of Vocational and Technical Education, the way forward and conclusion. THE NEED OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION 1. Vocational and Technical education prepares one for the world of work with which the individual become reliant and can make contributions to the development of the society. As employers look for new talents every year from new graduates, it is important to not only have a solid education but graduates that have features that stand out from the rest of the graduating students. With the economy being more globalized than ever, it is important to have a background and a skill set that allows graduates to become immersed in the global economy right from graduation (Cote, 2007). Leadership is not a major cause of Nigeria's under-developed status. Nigeria can become an economic power-house (and realize its visions) only if proper attention is given to education and technological development and promotes and rewards creativity, and channel its material and human resources to productive use. 2. Youth Empowerment In this 21st century characterized by knowledge explosion, the emphasis should be on production of self-reliant citizens. VTE empowers Nigerian youth with requisite employability skills that should be sustained. VTE schools produces men and women who, at the end of their education should be able to put into use the skills they have acquired while in school. Institutions should partner with industries and other businesses to enable students fit into the wider society on graduation, either as individual workers in paid employment or self-employed person and functional members of the political society. 3. VTE also empower the people socially and economically so that they will be able to participate in the making of decision regarding policies affecting their lives, to make the citizens and nations to be self-reliant in the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Ogundele, Akingbade and Akinlabi (2012) revealed that youth empowerment is influenced through acquired skills. 4. As a channel for entrepreneurial skill acquisition, VTE play the role of improving the economic situation of Nigeria through production and distribution of goods in different areas of specialization. This is achievable through the training of the students in different specialized fields. In the long run, this will help the students to establish their own enterprise as seen in China, Turkey, India, Japan among other countries that have succeeded economically through vocational education. CONCLUSION Improving skill acquisition through VTE will no doubt solve Nigerian's multiple problems regarding human capital development, empowerment, unemployment and economic instability. The world has recognized that no meaningful social and economic progress could be recorded when majority of the populace is unemployed. This is why nations are striving to overcome the problem of unemployment especially among its youths and Nigeria is not left out. Since many programmes introduced to tackle the issue of unemployment in Nigeria has failed the nation, it now becomes obvious that the easiest way to achieve the goal is by improving skill acquisition through vocational and technical education for youth empowerment and sustainability. The world of work has changed. One reality of today’s workforce, however, that has remained the same is that youths need to develop skills to be employed. To be able to acquire these skills and effectively change jobs, and plan and manage multiple careers over one’s life time, career development skills are important. The process by which youths get to know their strengths and interests, learn how different jobs connect with those interests, and build these career planning and management skills is called career development. You can not be working for an organization who wants you to produce magic and yet want you to do it on an empty stomach... its just quite unbelievable how employers value the productivity of their staff. It will be welcoming if their is a regulatory government agency to monitor the the relationship between employer and employee especially when it comes to the requirement in the New world of work. Most employers layoff their staff because they refuse to make adequate resources for work. They even expect that u use your earned salary to take care of their operational resources. Nigerians I happen to work with one and i sincerely need your advice. My social media friends i work with an organization affiliated to a popular church In Nigeria. This organization is chaired by the wife of the General Overseer. I am amazed that they have no idea of what their management they have employed are wicked and not christian. I was born a christian and took up this job because it is affiliated to a church i respect, unfortunately i meet with devils. I know that the organization and the church will come fighting me heavily, they have succeed to have employed me for 7months without an ID card not even an appointment letter. They can come denying me. Things will spoil and the management will insist you use your money to repair their assets. This is a whole lot of crap. Please come to my rescue...... |
If that is the picture of the boy being chained for sleeping with a sheep, will the owner chain a ship for sleep with the sheep, Will the sheep seek permission from the owner before sleeping with his fellow sheep? Afterall the sheep was not declared stolen or killed That boy should be taken to the hospital and quarantined, checked for any case of strange infection or mental dis order instead of being maltreated. Na wa O sha!!! |
Its quite unfortunate in this tenure of change as proclaimed by the President; My extinguished person Mohammedu Buhari and our APC lead Government who has promised comfort for the Nigeria Employees. The case señerio is of a company whose management can spend over 200 million Naira on un accounted expense and several millions on party and can't spend a dime for her employees who labored for the money. An event occurs every Christmas where employees sweat are are looted away at the end of the year and not a single Compensation is given to them except for an hand shake saying merry Christmas. This act is quite an irony and a shame on the labor law. It also shame on the ministry of labour and productivity where no check is done on organisation remuneration chat to check what employees are compensated with. Some Organisations give gifts and money to compensate their employees but this one organisation ensure to put her entire workforce to stringent conditions in other to frustrate them out of the Job with the slogan soldier go soldiers come. I willing to give information on this organisation who has several act to abusing her employees all because of their small salary where a graduate earns 30000 monthly and manager earns 80000 monthly. I hereby appeal to all nairalanders to speak out of their experiences so we can kick out such employers out of the country. Thanks |
That's my own quota to change at least Nigerians need jobs please idon't collect a dime to place you. Nigerians deserve better. You can email your cv to jiids@hotmail.com. Expecting the cvs |

I believe that the president elect knows what he is involved in when he decided to run for presidency in this age. please let him reminded, let his advisers advise him. That our Nigeria is a great global and media village compared to the days of Dele Giwa when journalist and Press men can be shot down. The E News has given us several ill and hilarious posts on celebrities and yet they are reckoned on as an outstanding media house. No dictatorial attitude will be allowed by any elected officer from PDP or APC, the rule of law must be upheld especially in this dispensation where CHANGE is the Nigerian motto. God bless the media houses in Nigeria. |
