Politics / Power Rotation: Kogi West, Central Take Case To Buhari, Odigie-oyegun by Jimmydeji(m): 9:13am On Aug 08, 2015
As the sale of Expression of Intent and Nomination forms for the forthcoming governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kogi State, ended at the weekend, leaders of the Kogi West And Central Coalition For Justice, Equity and Fairplay, took the agitation for power rotation to the Presidency and the national leadership of the party. A nine-man delegation from the West and Central senatorial zones in Kogi State paid a visit to the Abuja national headquarters of the APC at the weekend, to press for the actualization of the power shift aspiration, on the platform of the APC. The delegation included Prof Yusuf Aliu (a former don at the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU), Gen Julius Olakunle Oshanupin (former Commander, Brigade of Guards, Aso Villa), Dr Tom Adaba, (former Director- General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC) and Alhaji Idris Yusuf Tawari, an elder statesman. Also on the delegation were Ambassador Babatunde Paul Fadumiyo (President of the Okun Development Association, ODA), Dr Abdul Rahman Adeiza (President of the Ebira Peoples’ Association, EPA), Chief Clarence Olafemi, (a former Acting Governor of Kogi State), Dr David Atte (a former Commissioner in the Old Kwara State) and Chief J.O. Yusuf (a member of the Okun Think Tank, OTT). Armed with a four-page document titled: Request For APC To Recognise The Right Of The People of Central And West Senatorial Districts Of Kogi State To Produce The Candidate Of APC In The 2015 Gubernatorial Election, addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun, the delegation advocated the immediate redress of the continuing marginalisation of both zones in the socio-politics of Kogi State by ensuring that power shifts from Kogi East. According to the document, the visit to the apex leadership of the APC, was to ‘seek the sympathy, understanding, support and assistance of Mr President and the Party, for the popular struggle to ensure that power rotates from Kogi East to either Kogi Central or West.’ The leaders of Kogi West and Central observed among others, that except for the pioneering military administration which was in place between August 27, 1991 and January 2, 1992, and subsequently between November 1993 and May 1999, all elected Kogi State Governors in the 24 year history of the state, have come from Kogi East. The document also observed that in governing the state, all the governments headed by governors from Kogi East, ‘pursued an exclusive policy of appropriating as much as 70% of appointments and 80% of expenditure for Kogi East, leaving Kogi Central and West deprived, marginalised and sidelined in the affairs of the state.’ According to the leaders, it is a measure of the profundity of the quasi-enslavement of West and Central zones in Kogi State, that some Kogi East leaders have had the ‘temerity to publicly refer to Kogi State as ‘Igala State,’ in a visibly multi-ethnic and multi-cultural state, where anthropologists have identified over a dozen distinct languages and dialects. Alluding to the recent presidential election, the Kogi Central and West delegates at the visit, noted that in subscribing to the imperative for political change, Kogi West and Central polled a total of 227,896 votes (representing 55% of total votes cast, while Kogi East had 186,997 votes (45% of total votes cast). The leaders admonished the national leadership not to allow the incumbent leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in the state to cash in on the popular anger of Kogi West and Central to perpetuate itself in office, by ensuring that a candidate from either of the two zones, duly flies the flag of the party in the forthcoming governorship election. Welcoming the delegation to the APC National Headquarters, the party’s national chairman, Chief Odigie-Oyegun sympathised with the people of Kogi West and Central, over their continued subjugation in the politics of Kogi State. Drawing from the example of his home state of Edo where he was governor between January 1992 and November 1993, Odigie-Oyegun said it was the coming together of geo-political components of the state which felt genuinely excluded in the political scheme and their consensus agreement on just one candidate with unassailable credentials, that eventually culminated in power shift. Odigie-Oyegun who was flanked by the Deputy National Vice Chairman-North of the APC, Senator Lawan Shabu and the National Auditor of the party, Chief George Moghalu, assured that consistent with the ‘change’ mantra of the party, the APC would support every effort to ensure that justice and fairness is appropriately served in issues of election in the state. He enjoined the leaders to go back home, engage the various aspirants and other opinion leaders, and stay united like the broom, the insignia of the APC, in this liberation struggle. At the last count, about 20 aspirants from the three senatorial zones in the state had collected the APC nomination forms for the Kogi State governorship primaries slated for Saturday August 29, 2015. These include: Dr Onukaba Adinoyi Ojo (former Managing Director, Daily Times of Nigeria Plc), Senator Nurudeen Abatemi (immediate past senator representing Kogi Central) and Alhaji Yahaya Bello (businessman and former employee of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission, RMAFC), all from Kogi Central. The list also includes: Chief Clarence Olafemi (a former Speaker and Acting Governor in Kogi State), Alhaji Lanre Ipinmisho (a former Director General of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA) and Dr Habeeb Yekeen (a former Group General Manager in First Bank of Nigeria Plc). There are also Engr George Olusola Olumoroti (a petroleum engineer and businessman), Prince Rotimi Yaqub Obadofin (a former activist of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO) and Alhaji Suleiman Baba Ali (a Commissioner in Kogi State between 1999 and 2003, all from Kogi West. Two-time governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu, Senator Nicholas Yahaya Ugbane and Dr Alex Kadiri (both former senators representing Kogi East), Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed (former Managing Editor, Newswatch Magazine and Hajia Hadiza Ibrahim (a business woman) have also collected the nomination forms. Barr James Ocholi, SAN, (National Legal Adviser to the APC), Mr Suleiman Ejeh Abutu (a former Assistant Commissioner of Police), Dr Ndulue Diche (a businessman) and Mr Aliyu Jiya, all from Kogi East, have also obtained the APC governorship nomination form.
Politics / Bayelsa Guber: Patience Jonathan Dumps PDP, Backs APC Candidate, Sylva by Jimmydeji(m): 8:34am On Aug 08, 2015
Ahead of the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa State, there are indications that
the wife of the former president, Dame Patience Jonathan, has thrown her political weight
behind the candidacy of Chief Timipre Sylva, the immediate past governor of the State.
Sylva wants to contest the gubernatorial election on
the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It was gathered that in a meeting convened by Mrs.
Jonathan recently, in Otuoke, she read the riot act to
members of her group, asking them not to support
the re-election of the incumbent governor, Hon Henry
Seriake Dicks.
Sun reports that the former First Lady prefers Dr.
Weripamowei Dudafa, ex-presidential aide to the
immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan and
Commissioner for Local Government under Sylva.
It was gathered that Mrs. Jonathan directed members
of her political group to support the aspiration of
Sylva.
According to those present during the meeting, when
some persons reminded the First Lady that the former
president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan had openly declared
support for Dickson, she told them that Jonathan
won’t support Dickson when the chips are down.
Among those who attended the meeting, it was learnt
were a former acting governor of the state and
chairman of the defunct Transformation Ambassadors
of Nigeria (TAN) in Bayelsa State, Hon Werinipre
Seibarugu, Dr. Dudafa; former Commissioners for
Transport and Sports, Mrs. Marie Ebikake and Hon
Ebikitin Diongoli, a female politician, Mrs. Remi Kuku
and a host of others.

Politics / Jonathan, Sambo To Vacate Villa Friday by Jimmydeji(m): 6:52am On May 27, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday
said he and Vice President Namadi
Sambo are packing out of the
Presidential Villa on Friday.
He spoke when the Universal Peace
Federation, UPF, honoured him with
the award of “Peace Loving Global
Citizen” for his decision to accept the
result of the 2015 Presidential poll
and congratulating Gen. Muhammadu
Buhari as the winner of the election.
The President urged the incoming
administration to accept the
contribution of all Nigerians to the
progress and development of the
country.
“We have a country, the country will
be more united, I believe and only
pray that the incoming government
should appreciate the contributions of
everybody and see how we run
Nigeria as a country that belongs to
everybody and all citizens, irrespective
of political persuasion,” Jonathan said.
While commending the group for the
honour, Jonathan said Sambo also
deserved the honour, saying accepting
defeat in the election also affected
him.
Jonathan explained that he took the
decision to accept the result of the
election because there must be a
nation first before any ambition.
“I use to say that even if I will be
President for the next 25 years, I will
not be a happy person if many people
die because of me. One thing is to
hold office, another thing is to be able
to satisfy your conscience,” he added.
He stated that when he leaves office,
the remaining part of his life would be
dedicated to issues that would bring
unity and peace to the country.
Speaking earlier, leader of the group,
Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN,
saidJonathanhasattracted global
recognition considering
hisdecisiontoacceptdefeat.
He noted that Nigeria is now
respected in the comity of nations not
only because of Jonathan’s
achievements but because of his
decision to accept the result of the
election.
Politics / If I Were Buhari, I'll Employ An Emergency Program Within My 1st Week In Office by Jimmydeji(m): 6:21am On May 27, 2015
1. Not remove the so-called fuel subsidy, because like
him, I don't believe there is even a subsidy in the
first place. I will sack the entire management of
NNPC, PEF and PPPRA, and revoke all oil import
contracts except those signed with the oil majors.
2. Negotiate a contract with the majors (Total, Mobil,
Shell, etc) to supply Nigeria's daily needs of refined
petroleum products from their overseas refineries, in
exchange for Nigeria's crude at a reasonable profit
margin.
3. Hire a foreign and a local audit firm to
independently audit NNPC, PEF and PPPRA accounts
from May 2007 to May 2015.
4. Replace the heads of DSS, EFCC and ICPC, and
charge the new heads with concluding the trials of
fuel subsidy thieves within 6 months. They will also
scrutinize the bank accounts and assets of Federal
High Court, Appeal Court and Supreme Court Judges,
as well as management staff of all "lucrative"
agencies, such as the Nigerian Customs, NPA, etc.
5. Judges and officers who can't explain their wealth
will be investigated further, and if found corrupt, will
lose their jobs and face prosecution.
6. Revisit the cases of Abdulrasheed Maina and John
Yusuf, and trace the whereabouts of the 225 billion
naira pension funds looted by these two and their
accomplices.
7. Trace and recover at least a third of the 2.3 trillion
naira subsidy scam perpetrated in 2011 within 1
month. With a trillion naira already recovered, the
FGN needs not borrow again to pay workers' salaries.
8. Raise another 2 trillion naira by the end of the
year by selling 8 of the 11 aircraft in the presidential
fleet, selling some of Nigeria's lucrative oil blocks to
the oil majors, and blocking wastages, such as import
waivers, Aso Villa and National Assembly overhead
costs, etc.
9. Inject 1.5 trillion of that amount into the power
sector by building 2-3 coal-powered stations per
geopolitical zone, with a long term view of
decentralizing power supply. The other 500 billion
naira will be used to reactivate all 4 refineries to
110% capacity. If as head of Warri refinery you can't
meet that target, you have no business being in my
government. After audit, break NNPC into four
separate entities (as already promised) and scrap
PPPRA and PEF.
10. Replace the NSA, IGP and all defence chiefs, and
constitute panels to investigate their activities from
2010, especially regarding military and police budgets
and the Boko Haram insurgency. All the panels must
air proceedings on live TV, and those found culpable
will face prosecution.
11. I will then get down to the business of running
Nigeria, which of course, will include a new law on
child abuse (to prosecute parents of almajiri children),
an enforcement of PHCN sale agreements (which
stipulated DISCOS will make substantial investments
in the power sector), etc.
