Politics / Re: Withdrawal Of Officers From Vips: Police Deploy Men To Airports, Highways To... by jjman2322: 12:38pm On Aug 26, 2015
To be honest, the people saying good move, etc are people who dont have money..

I support what our government is doing, however it is putting the cart before the horse..

In the USA, UK, etc, nobody needs private escort because the country is safe..

However, in Nigeria, some rich people DO need the police men... Lets imagine for a second dangote, adenuga, etc, have no police escort, and are driving around normally.. I'll give it two weeks before they are both kidnapped.

Same for lots of rich men... A lot of rich men with huge mansions WHO MADE THEIR MONEY LEGALLY are kept safe by police in their homes, escort.. If you remove the police men you're just asking for trouble..

Would be interesting to see daily list of people now kidnapped from their homes.

I'll repeat again, this is a good policy, but you need to fix the security situation in the country.

It's almost like banning the use of generator due to the noise and pollution, without providing 24 hour security..

Lets assume any of you here become really rich, build an incredible mansion and buy a nice car, wouldnt you want some police men in your house Without that, all it would take is two local boys with a knife to come into your house and kidnap your ass..

Just to add, lots of private security are useless and aren't even armed..

For the record, in our USA house, there is a noise ordinance and obviously you cant use a generator at all, but nobody is complaining because you dont need a generator..

Wizkid is a TARGET for kidnappers, and obviously he will be kidnapped without security..

Celebrities in USA don't go around with police men because frankly the crime rate is almost NIL and nobody cares about you.. Bill gates can drive into a grocery store, buy some bread and drive out, and nobody cares and he knows he's safe..

Lets see dangote or adenuga try that =)

P/S you guys need to realize that there are many Nigerians who made their money LEGALLY... Millions of them... Not everyone is a Polithiefcian.

Yes it is possible

no it's not. Dom accounts aren't on cbn clearing so you can't transfer from one bank to another. only within a bank. don't believe me call your bank now and ask them. this has never been possible and won't be possible anytime soon.

dollar can't be sent locally from one bank to another. simple.

besides bdc also now have a limit of 5000 and they need bvn before they can transact. the whole thing is a mess.

Based on the explainations made here, if not handled carefully, this might actually create another "black market" with possibly higher rates.

One where people in the diaspora with assess to foreign currencies are able to offer to transfer dollars on behalf of individuals, companies etc. for naira credit into their bank accounts back home in Nigeria.

As can be expected, rates would not be going for the official rates as the demand and supply curve would lead to greater demand than available supply, especially for businessmen who need parts or materials urgently, or even people with urgent medical needs outside the country. The end result would be rates possibly even higher than that being contended by the CBN.

Unfortuantely, as mentioned by jjman earlier, I believe this would lead to increased cost of doing business and eventual increased cost of commodities.

Is this a correct assumption?

lol funny you mention. my acct officer called now and said he found someone who can transfer dollars from usa. he has 20.000 and the rate is 265. I love my country lol

it is a simple process. But please kindly note I am only talking about transfer in the range of 1000 to 3000 dollars and only services of western union and money gram outward. But if u can get ppl in benin with Dom account they may help with higher transactions.

yeah so we are back to square one.. People who legitimately need to send funds abroad (buy a car, help family member out, spare parts, etc, re gonna suffer)

Its crazy whats happening but basically CASH dollars are now useless in Nigeria tongue

I mean you can make small payments from your Naira master card via credit card payment or Paypal online.

oh that.. that wont work for trying to pay suppliers in china, abroad , big dollars.

You cant order spare parts or raw materials with paypal or credit card, you need to send bank wires..

Besides thanks to CBN all your cards now have a combined yearly limit of $50,000 and $300/day atm limit

So, basically what they mean by outward online transfers will only be CC and PP.

My issue isnt sending funds you already have..My issue is that you cant deposit more dollars into your account or send any new money to anyone abroad.

That's crazy then! Especially, when you can't wire out from your Naira account too.

That would mean physically taking cash out to the 'Cotonous' to send -- for real?!

exactly.. If you dont understand/still confused, go to your bank with $100. Tell them you want to send it to a friend in USA, and see what they tell you.

Also, no you cant wire out Naira to any other country. That hasnt been possible for generations. You also can't exchange naira in UK, USA, etc. Its as good as toilet paper abroad.

there are 3ways about it. 1)

is to relocate banking transactions to outside.which meNs you Will use your Nigerian Dom account to receive but transfer from outside Nigeria.
(this is one option but its not so straight forward.. means you need to go to Ghana or nearby country with lots of USD cash and open an account and deposit it there.. Lets not forget you have to worry about customs, etc, its not so easy to come into another country with huge amounts of dollars.

2)have someone do the transactions and transfer for you.
(I have 3 guys in Lagos who you pay naira and they send dollars for you. As of friday none can send it anymore. They said the new policy has crippled them as well)

3)stop the transaction. Am I wrong?

(This means closing down the business. Not a good option)

Same problem bro.. So many payments outstanding for things ordered, and Im stuck on how to send them.. Can get the dollars as cash easily, but no point if it cant be sent.. Its a big problem and Ive been brain storming with all our account officers.. no luck yet

"Please note that this temporary measure, does not affect electronic transfer of funds into or from your domiciliary accounts and, you will continue to have access to foreign currency cash withdrawals from your account"

You're still confused. let me explain what they mean:

What this means is that people can send you FUNDS to your dom account from ABROAD(USA,Uk,ETC), and you can withdraw the funds you have as cash.

YOU CANNOT go to GTBANK and give them $10,000 cash and send out a wire.

I'm speaking from experience, afterall we have a gtbank dom account with high five figures and our account officer had a meeting with us telling us the bad news.

I will explain further if you need.

Bottom line is you have $10,000 cash, GTBANK will not touch it or send it to anyone. However, if you already have $10,00 in your account, they will let you access it.

You can also get deposits into your DOM ACCT, but only ELECTRONIC(WIRE TRANSFERS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY).

Your $10,000 or $20,000 cash in your hand is useless. Hence why the dollar is dropping a lot.

Notice the keywords:

electronic transfer of funds (meaning wire in from another country, and wire out to another country) ,

and, you will continue to have access to foreign currency cash withdrawals]from your account (doesnt say cash deposits, just withdrawals.. basically bank is saying come and take your stupid dollars from your account because its useless to us)

[i]This is my interptetation of it (stop me when I'm wrong): If you need to wire dollars overseas (say $10,000), simply take your $10,000 to the bank, prove genuineness of intent, and your $10,000 will be wired to it's destination thru your account.

Wrong information. To wire money abroad, the dollars(cash) need to be accepted by the bank first, and they are not doing it anymore.

So no, you can't take $10,000 cash to GTBANK and have them wire it abroad.. Those days are gone.

The big issue here is the banks dont want your USD Cash anymore. They can't give it to the CBN and its useless to them..

If they take your $10,000 what will they do with it? CBN wont accept or convert it for them..

So nah, you cant deposit to your dom account. If you have any existing funds, depending on the bank you will be able to wire it off, but once its done you cant make any new cash deposits.
Business / Re: It’s N209 To $1 As Appetite For Dollars Falls by jjman2322: 7:50am On Aug 04, 2015
Here's another popular scenario..

Imagine you have a friend in USA and you want him to buy a $20,000 Lexus for you.. he has shown you pictures, specs and you love the car..

You have naira in your GTBANK account, and your friend in USA obviously needs dollars to purchase the car for you.

No way to send your friend $20,000 for your car, and CBN isnt giving you $20,000 for your car anytime soon..

GOODLUCK!! grin Your only option now is to contact globe motors in Lagos because your ass is not getting that Lexus from USA.

we don't use dom accounts or Nigeria banks. He uses his friend in Canada, I have a UK bank account. Technically the whole exchange thing doesn't really affect us much but we are humans, naturally we convert the value to naira in our head.

He was happy with the bogus exchange rate but I was not because I know we will spend whatever we make in Nigeria in the end and because I have couple of writers who get paid in dollars. Plus I love books and use amazon to get them.

And as for dom accounts, I am a Beninose/Nigerian, I use Benin to receive funds before because escrow.com doesn't/did ( not sure if they do now) accept Nigeria, in Benin, they pay me not in dollars but in CEFA. And when I was to send money, I pay in CEFA and they convert it.

Your case is different. You bank and have links abroad.

Now imagine if you 100% live and bank in Nigeria.. Thats where the problem starts..

I am really learning from your posts.but considering this policy now,how long will it be before Nigerians starts feeling its negative impact? Secondly, can one go to neighboring countries to transfer

Theoretically this may be the next best option.. Havent looked into it but it may work for some people who transfer small amounts.. They can possibly go to Ghana and open dom accounts and deposit dollars there..

However, for companies that send $50,000 , $100,000 , etc, its not feasible.. No way you're gonna drive across the border with $100,000 cash. Thats trouble and not worth it.

let's assume your friend has bought the site now with the funds available in his Dom acc and he has exhausted it but see another fantastic offer that requires immediate transfer of 3000$ ,please how will your friend fund his Dom account in order to complete the transaction?

There in lies the problem grin

CBN isnt gonna give you the $3000 for your website, and you cant deposit $3000 and send to your friend.

It leaves four options:

#1. Hope that person you're buying the website from accepts credit cards (very unlikely)
#2. Go abroad and deliver the $3000 cash in person
#3. Invite him to Nigeria to come and collect the $3,000 in person
#4. Send him your naira card and tell him to hit the atm every day for 10 days ($300/day is ATM limit)

grin What a joke policy.. Now you're getting it.

this is original pure undiluted wahala. What sort of nonsense policy is this. And I was even initially applauding the cbn governor. Nigerians will suffer for this because the cost of doing business will rise and likewise the cost of transactions which will nullify the naira gain but increase the cost of goods, products and services.

people are applauding him because they don't get the implications..

No single manufacturer or importer is applauding him because they GET the implications, implications which include higher cost of production, scarcity of raw materials, delay in sourcing parts, and possibility of shutting down.

Oga please kindly enlighten me more. Please if I have 10000 dollars and I need a make a payment abroad, now that cbn has blocked Dom acc direct funding with dollars, how do I transfer the money abroad? What other bank processes can one follow and how fast is it?

Thats the problem now. You need to open an LC , or ask the company for Bill for collection (credit if they trust you)

Be prepared to wait months as LC is very complicated and CBN isnt giving cash for bills.

Your only solution is to find someone abroad to send the money to them, and you give them naira locally, or you take that money as cash and buy your plane ticket and go visit the company.
Business / Re: It’s N209 To $1 As Appetite For Dollars Falls by jjman2322: 7:12am On Aug 04, 2015
Let me make some quick predictions based on first hand experience.

#1. Legit manufacturers that were buying black market before for machines, parts and raw materials will no longer be able to do this due to the new rule. As usual, getting funds from CBN for these imports is still taking months.

#2. Prices of good will go sky high. As a manufacturer , if i only have raw materials to last for 3 months, I'll increase the price to make as much money as possible.. You guys wait for a few months and watch what happens in the market when supply < demand

Bottom line is when goods become scarce, prices go sky high. It was easy to wire funds abroad to China and India for goods, now its impossible.

#3. People need to realize the fact dollar depreciated in black market has nothing to do with our economy, it simply has to do with less demand(due to the fact it cant be deposited/wired). The CBN still has a problem meeting dollar demands from local businesses because the oil price is still low, and they are busy trying to shore up the reserve.

Nigeria is in for a bumpy ride ahead, and I wish everyone all the best.

I'm not saying this policy is all bad. The good news is that now crooks and corrupt people cant convert their naira to dollars and wire abroad to buy houses, stash the cash in foreign accounts, etc.

The bad news is that now legit businesses cant wire funds abroad to source materials they need for production. They now have to depend solely on CBN and that takes months at best.

Lets assume you have a small industry, and your machine brakes down and you need to wire $12,000 to india to get some parts to continue production ASAP, thanks to CBN you're basically f***ed.. Time to close up shop because your Indian spare part supplier has no way of getting that $12000. and NO, machine manufacturers and raw material suppliers abroad don't take gtbank naira cards. lol.

Please note that this temporary measure, does not affect electronic transfer of funds into or from your domiciliary accounts and, you will continue to have access to foreign currency cash withdrawals from your account.

You dont get it do you? explain how you will get electronic transfer of funds into your domicilliary account.. Lets imagine you have N10,000,000 and need to send some funds abroad to family, friends, etc.. Your naira is useless and the mallam cant wire USD into your dom account since dollars cant be sent across banks in Nigeria... People are still confused about this policy.. Its crippling for legitimate business men.

DOM accounts has no yearly LIMIT or the $300 dollar/day limit... It was easy to deposit cash into DOM account and fund it.. Now the only way to get money from DOM ACCOUNT is through an electronic transfer...

For the donkey who complained about buying a $20,000 car for my child. I hope you realize there are millions of Nigerians who are rich and have legitimate businesses. (Car dealers, hotel owners, manufacturers, restaurants, etc) There are many people who make money 100% legit and dont deal in Oil subsidy fraud or government contracts.

Maybe you want your child to use a bus, however some parents see no problem in buying their child a $20.000 or $50,000 dollar car.

I dont even want to get into the medical aspect of this rule.

This just happened to someone i know today:

His dad needs to go to abroad for a procedure(hip replacement), he got the letter from the hospital today that the total bill is around $62,000 or thereabouts. He has naira, he needs dollars asap to pay the hospital deposit upfront and also be able to wire the rest. He asked me if I had dollars sitting abroad to give him and I said no.

I told him goodluck getting the funds to the hospital in the next 3 months grin He's gonna need all the luck he can get.

CBN is telling people there are channels for sourcing funds for legitimate business. ALL Manufacturers already know and use this. The only problem is that unless you're a manufacturer or an importer, you wont know that CBN does not have enough dollars, and its taking months to get funds from them..

Instead of CBN to use the dollars to settle bills for importers and manufacturers, they are using the funds to shore up the reserve. What is the point of the reserve if companies are closing and people are getting laid off.lol stupid country

I see there arent a lot of business men here or company owners.. Let me explain how things work before you keep applauding the CBN:

#1. In the USA, you dont need to deposit in other currencies because you can WIRE OUT YOUR USD to any country and they will convert it to their local currency.

What this means is that if im in USA, I have $50,000 USD in my account, i Can send that money to Japan, China, europe, etc.. This is not Possible with our NGN.. You can't wire Naira outside Nigeria without converting it first.. So the CBN governor is a donkey for comparing both countries.

Our currency is useless outside Nigeria. Some of you that have traveled out know you can't convert naira in UK, USA, China, however my dollars are good all over the world.

#2. This policy will lead to more unemployment. Lots of companies buy spare parts, machines from China, India.. Let me give you an example.

Say i need a new part for my machine, I get quoted $5,000 USD by a company in China.. The quickest most reliable way to pay them is to buy black market and deposit the cash in my DOM ACCT, then wire it off, and in 2 days they have shipped my part.

With the new policy changes, there is no easy way to pay for these parts.. LC's and Bill for collections are taking 3-4 months since the CBN does not have enough dollars for importers and manufacturers..

Let me explain in simpler terms:

If you wish to import raw material for production (which 100% of nigerian manufacturers do,(from plastic, to pharma, etc), then you have two ways of paying for the raw material:

LC = Letter of credit, which basically means the bank in Nigeria debits your account, then once the shipper ships he gets the funds..
Last year and two, LC's were getting approved in 1-2 weeks. Now it is taking 3-4 months, so many manufacturers now source black market funds to pay for raw materials.

Bill for collection basically means the shipper ships on credit and you submit the paperwork to the bank for payment. CBN usually approved the funds in 1-2 weeks, the last bill for collection submitted by my company took 4 months for approval. If it were not for black market we would have stopped production and had to lay off people.

Many of you aren't into business and you don't understand what is going on. Let me explain in simple terms.

What this simply means is that lets assume you have N5,000,000 and you want to go tour around and have fun in Europe:

Back then, you could convert your Naira into dollar, pay into dom acct, then travel and have fun.

Now the only OPTION is Naira card which now thanks to CBN has daily ATM limit of $300/USD per day, and maximum $50,000 per year spend per customer.

For the average poor person who never crosses the border, this doesnt affect them. However, many Nigerians need to access more than $300/day and $50,000/year.

Also, lets assume you want to buy a new car for your child in USA. Value of car = $20,000. Back then you go to mallam, buy $20,000 USD, send it to your child ($10,000 per day CBN LIMIT) and in 2 days your child buys the car. Now with the new rule your child better get used to taking the bus.

What the CBN effectively did is prevent many law abiding Nigeria from remitting funds abroad. Its kinda like banning driving at night because armed robbers operate at night.

For the average person , this policy is meaningless. For the rest of us business men who source parts, products abroad, we are in for hard times.

Goodluck all

LOL @ Enugu/Ibadan

Before you kill me, i live in Enugu now.. Enugu is great for what it is.. It is quiet, mostly peaceful, low crime, and life is easy going here..

But its not ONE OF THE TOP PLACES TO RETIRE IN AFRICA..

The problem most people here have is they have't been outside Nigeria.. How can you call Enugu stadium world class? Try going to a stadium in other countries..

Most people think the highway here is great, i guess some of you haven't seen SIX or EIGHT lane highways on both sides with zero potholes for thousand of miles..? In our amazing continent, I've been to South Africa, Egypt & Morocco and they are much more developed than us..

I suggest people travel a bit like someone suggested.. I spent my whole life in the states and made good friends from different parts of the world, which made me curious to see the world. I luckily ended up traveling around a lot to central america, south america, asia & Europe..

A place like Enugu can't be a top place to retire when :

#1. You burn diesel to sleep at night.. As we speak now the generator has been on for the past 7hrs .
#2. You provide your own water via water tanker.
#3. You need police men to guard your house if you have a nice house or don't want crime.
#4. Bad infrastructure.. Bad roads.. Slow internet speeds..
#5. Nothing to do here except a few sleazy night clubs and the little strip mall.

Just to note, Enugu people here believe polo park mall is world class. LOL.. That mall is called a "STRIP MALL" anywhere else in the world..

Its probably about 0.5% of the size of a regular mall abroad..

Im not trying to bash Enugu/Nigeria. Im just saying no sane person with a lot of money from another country would move to Nigeria to retire, especially Enugu.

Most rich people in Nigeria are either Nigerian citizens, or foreigners who are here to make money in Nigeria...

Rich Africans take their money to south africa, europe or the middle east..

In closing, its very unfortunate what our leaders have done to us. God blessed us with enough resources to be as developed as some other countries, but corruption and greed destroyed it all. I hope for a better tomorrow that will see foreigners moving from other countries to Nigeria to retire. Millions of people take their cash and move to the Caribbean, middle east, central/south america, and south Africa to retire.. None come to Nigeria.. If you weren't Nigerian would you be here?

Hey lady, please read this fully before you make a mistake..

Can you guys please stop advising her to move here.... She needs to visit first for a month and see if she likes it..

I have some time and I can relate so let me explain both to you..

I moved to the USA when I was young (for grade school), and lived there for 16 years before moving back recently.. I know both sides very well..Im still in my late 20's. Note that im a USA citizen so it's not like I cant move back if I want to,

Nigeria is a GREAT country if you have some money to be very comfortable... I have constant electricity (with generators), have drivers, maids, cooks, and security, but even with all these I still miss the States..

PROS OF NIGERIA:

1. Better Food
2. Good Weather
3. Corruption works in your favour (Forget ever getting speeding tickets, getting points on your license, etc, N200 and you're free)
4. Laid Back
5. More business opportunities (if you have a solid PLAN)
6. Easier life (maids, cooks, etc)
7. Minimal racism. In Nigeria you are judged by how rich you are. If you have money nobody will ever discriminate against you.

THIS IS ABOUT IT..

now for the CONS OF NIGERIA

1. Its very hot and humid, but its a little better than the cold.
2. The love for money here is strong, (Most girls I meet just want money, unlike the states where you could be poor and still easily get girls)
3. Lack of constant electricity..
4. You need AC's all year round to be comfortable.
5. Its unsafe.. Everyday someone is getting robbed or kidnapped.
6. It's a little boring, and let me explain:

In the USA, if i got bored I could easily go skiing at a resort for a weekend, or hit up miami beach... I can also go to Vegas or head to Colorado for the nature. Of course you could also do a weekend in NYC or if you feel like being romantic you could hit up hawaii for a week.

Basically the USA has a lot more to do, due to the 50 states and the much better airline travel. In nigeria most people's idea of fun is (movie theater & clubs & malls). People smoke in clubs so I stopped going a lot. Our malls are also nothing to write home about. One of my friends was raving about the mall in Lagos so i did visit it last year. LOL.. I was like dude you need to come and see an actual mall abroad. The things they call malls here are comparable to "STRIP MALLS" in the states. Im sure you understand that.

7. The culture is conservative. If you have tattoos or wear certain stuff you will be judged by others as a "wayward" girl.

8. The poverty level here is insane, and it'll get to you eventually. There are thousands of people on the streets, blind, no legs, etc, just begging for money. It's sad.

9. The healthcare here isn't up to par. I recently had some problems and went to a big/nice hospital and they couldn't figure out what was wrong even after using their machines. I then visited a doctor in the states and in a few minutes they knew what was wrong.. You can't blame them though, how do you expect Nigeria hospitals to afford equipment that costs millions of dollars. There's a reason the rich seek treatment outside Nigeria.

Most Nigerians would not agree with me and would argue that Nigeria has some top hospitals, however ask anyone who has gotten a surgery or delivered a baby in the United States, and they would concur with me that there is no comparison.

10. No 911 to call.. Most people actually survive car accidents initially except in Nigeria there's no way for them to get to the hospital quickly. Besides hospitals here would require a payment before fully treating you and operating on you.

11. Level of dust/dirt, but this doesn't bother me too much.

This is all I can think of that really bothers me for now.. There's a lot more but those are minor issues.

So you may ask why I stay.

Well im here because I make a lot more money here than I could make in the states, plus i have help to do basic things. I can also visit the states whenever I want to. If it weren't for the money, I would not be here...

Thats why you are getting conflicting opinions. Nigeria is OK if you have a lot of money, and your money goes a longer way here. If you don't have good money then don't leave the states and come down here.. You will probably regret it.

My suggestion to you: Move to the west coast. Less racism, perfect weather, and laid back life style... Try that before moving here..

Matt. 19:21

"Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Don't you guys want to be perfect??

I would also love to add that our ever loving God is the biggest mass murderer in history.. If someone is so perfect then why create millions of things and end up killing them

According to the bible official figures, God killed over 2.5million people(I bet many of you didn't know that. You can google it yourself)

But experts estimate its closer to 20million+

Religion is bringing Nigeria down. We have more churches per square mile than 99% of other countries, yet our country is a crap hole.. Massive corruption, poverty, suffering, etc.

Does it mean God does not like us?? Meanwhile countries that arent as religious as us are doing much better..

Anyway, I dont want to get into that issue... For all you tithe payers, have you ever wondered why the pastor only chooses the verses and books that suit him when it comes to getting money..

The pastor should also be preaching stuff like "Wearing clothing woven of more than one kind of cloth" is not allowed (Please check your tags ASAP),

Even the bible itself is confused.. Go ahead and check http://infidels.org/library/modern/jim_meritt/bible-contradictions.html and you will see tons of inconsistencies.

Never have I seen a book with advocates killing your own child if he disobeys (Deuteronomy 21:18-21), yet at the same time preaches forgiveness and mercy.

I'm sure your pastors won't tell you to go home and kill your children, after all its in the old testament,(but magically they will collect your money using old testament books and quotes..)

Goodluck to all, to each his own.

Finally i'd love to say majority of Nigerians are sheep.. I finally gave up on Nigerians about 2yrs ago when i was in the village in Anambra state, and we went to a local church... Guess what? The pastor was announcing this:

"The family of MR so and so has given N200. They have tried.."
"The family of MR a and b has given N50. They need to do better next time "
"The family of Mr b and c has given N1,000. God will bless them the most and continue to keep them"
"The family of Mr d and e has yet to give anything. They don't want God to bless them. Thats their business"

I concluded there and then that majority of Nigerians are idiots..

Cheers

Thanks sir. Am not particularly searching for investors. but I am currently training some farmers. if you invest in them, I guarantee 100% return on investment in 1year... and you would have been able to serve humanity that way. and set up some people.

When do you want to start the clustered farming operation?

Hey Jasper,

Are you looking for investors? I already have a good business (pharmaceutical manufacturing, and we employ over 300 people).

I would like somewhere to put some of my money into, for a small return.

Maybe you could use the money to buy land, expand, etc. I have a good amount of millions to invest, let me know if this is something you are interested in doing.

I also have a lot of available land in Anambra that will be idle forever, so if its something you can use let me know... I read the whole thread and im proud of what you are doing, I just don't have enough time to get into this business full time.
