Researchers in Canada claimed to have discovered a new way to cure patients with serious gut infections by giving the pills made from healthy people’s faeces. The so-called “poop pills” were administered to 27 patients and all of them where cured, after treatment conditions with powerful anti-biotics failed.

Doctors have assured of its safety, cleanliness and wholesomeness

Donor stool, usually from a relative, is processed in the lab to take out food and extract the bacteria and clean it. It is packed into triple-coated gel capsules so they won’t dissolve until they reach the intestines.

‘There’s no stool left – just stool bugs. These people are not eating poop,’ and there are no smelly burps because the contents aren’t released until they’re well past the stomach, Louie said.

Dr. Thomas Louie, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Calgary, was the scientist that devised this treatment procedure.

What does it cure?

C-diff. Half a million Americans get Clostridium difficile, or C-diff, infections each year, and about 14,000 die. The germ causes nausea, cramping and diarrhea so bad it is often disabling. A very potent and pricey antibiotic can kill C-diff but also destroys good bacteria that live in the gut, leaving it more susceptible to future infections. Recently, studies have shown that fecal transplants — giving infected people stool from a healthy donor — can restore that balance. But they’re given through expensive, invasive procedures like colonoscopies or throat tubes. Doctors also have tried giving the stool through enemas but the treatment doesn’t always take hold.


How does it work?

Days before starting the treatment, patients are given an antibiotic to kill the C-diff. On the morning of the treatment, they have an enema so “the new bacteria coming in have a clean slate,” Louie said. It takes 24 to 34 capsules to fit the bacteria needed for a treatment, and patients down them in one sitting. The pills make their way to the colon and seed it with the normal variety of bacteria.

Does it really work?

Louie described 27 patients treated this way on Thursday at IDWeek, an infectious diseases conference in San Francisco. All had suffered at least four C-diff infections and relapses, but none had a recurrence after taking the poop pills. Margaret Corbin, 69, a retired nurse’s aide from Calgary, told of the misery of C-diff.

“It lasted for two years. It was horrible. I thought I was dying. I couldn’t eat. Every time I ate anything or drank water I was into the bathroom,” she said. “I never went anywhere, I stayed home all the time.” With her daughter as the donor, she took pills made by Louie two years ago, and “I’ve been perfectly fine since,” Corbin said.

How are experts reacting to this?

Dr. Curtis Donskey of the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, who has done fecal transplants through colonoscopies, praised the work.

“The approach that Dr. Louie has is completely novel — no one else has done this,” he said. “I am optimistic that this type of preparation will make these procedures much easier for patients and for physicians.” Louie sees potential for the poop pills for other people with out-of-whack gut bacteria, such as hospitalized patients vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant germs.

“This approach, to me, has wide application in medicine,” he said. “So it’s not just about C-diff.”

It would be interesting to see how the rival camps in the Anambra state chapter of the PDP will react to this latest development. The national leadership of the party had earlier on endorsed Tony Nwoye as the party’s candidate in the gubernatorial polls, but the decision did not go down well with some aggrieved factions within the party, notable among them was the one being led by Senator Andy Uba.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu is not considered a potential winner in the polls if he eventually contests as the party’s man due to his late arrival in the scene, months after candidates from other parties have gained ground. It is a major blow for PDP in their quest to reclaim the state which they lost in 2006 following the sacking of then-governor-turned-senator Chris Ngige who, incidentally, wants to return to the government house in Awka, this time around under the All Progressives Congress, APC.

About 130 African migrants in search of greener pastures in Europe perished off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, near mainland Italy. The UN speculates that a good number of the over 500 people on the boat at the time of the incident were from the East African countries of Somalia and Eritrea.

Mayor of Lampedusa, Giusy Nicolini, says it appears migrants lit a small fire on the boat when it was about a kilometer from shore to attract the attention of the coastguard.
The fire spread and caused those onboard to panic. Ms Nicolini says the boat then flipped over.

More than 150 passengers have survived the ordeal, while up to 200 are still unaccounted for. But air and sea rescue operations are ongoing to pluck more people to safety. The survivors are being taken to the main port on the Lampedusa island where they will be looked after. Bodies of the casualties are also being taken to the facilities.

“A disgrace”
Pope Francis I, who visited Lampedusa in July, immediately offered his condolences but added: “The word disgrace comes to mind. It’s a disgrace.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres also added, “I commend the swift action taken by the Italian coastguard to save lives. At the same time, I am dismayed at the rising global phenomenon of migrants and people fleeing conflict or persecution and perishing at sea.”

This latest tragedy comes barely four days after 13 migrants perished off the eastern coast of Sicily. The Italian island of Lampedusa is the part of the European Union that is closest to Libya, which is the preferred route for people that smuggle African migrants into Europe. Most of these illegal migrants embark on a very dangerous journey that takes them through the hot Sahara Desert to the Libyan coast where they then embark on the final phase of the trip to Europe.

Anyway, I stated sometime that Tecno simply understands what they want and went for it, Nigeria has one of the largest though poor telecommunications market in the world. Somebody wrote somewhere that Tecno cannot go to India, it did in July. And for everyone's information, three of the most popular phone models in India, Micromax A100, Lava Iris 501 and the Prestigio 5000 are exact replicas of the N7 to the last detail. We are Ok with Tecno and we only ask for OTA upgrade in the future.

Samsung were the first people that built a phone with those features.

Lol, your blood is hot. Chill, but you will agree with me that if Apple or Samsung decide to make powerful smartphones that will cost around 20k Tecno is out of the game. There is no law forbidding Tecno from building high-end phones even though their focus is on cheap phones. It will get them noticed in the Western world where the real money is.

Lots and lots. I cannot list all of them here. According to some reviews I read about Galaxy S4, the phone has an inbuilt thermometer, hygrometer and barometer. Each of the three sensors is designed to
measure the environmental factors immediately surrounding the location of the smart phone. The thermometer measures
temperature while the barometer measure atmospheric pressure and a hygrometer analyzes the humidity content of the air. This is the first of its kind and that's innovation.

Can someone here mention any innovative or outstanding feature in Tecno's Phantom? E.g. Apple's Iphone 5s has the fingerprint-based TouchID that allows you to lock your phone with your own fingerprint instead of a password or a code. That's what point number 3 is talking about. Tecno needs to be more innovative and come up with their own bright ideas and also develop a future-packed flagship product similar to what Samsung nd Apple have done with their Galaxy and Iphone. Nokia is even trying it out with Lumia, Tecno should also give it a shot.

Tecno has good phones, yes, no doubt. But if you go to the market and see 2 phones, one from Tecno and one from Apple, with the same features and everything, and the same price, which one are you going to buy? I bet 90% of you will go for the Apple phone. This is what numbers 1 and 2 on the list are saying.

3. The Tecno brand has recently earned itself a catchphrase that it will not be too proud of, “One Day, One Tecno”. Just like Blackberry before it, the smartphone makers have formed the habit of treating us with one new release after the other, almost on a daily basis. What this simply means is that they are recycling the same set of phones over and over again, whilst adding and subtracting some negligible features here and there. They have failed to learn from one of the things that caused the downfall of Blackberry and (more crucially) they’ve failed to take a cue from what makes Apple and Samsung thick. While Blackberry was busy flooding the market with “brand-new” smartphones that were more or less the same in an aggressive sales campaign, Apple and Samsung were busy investing their time and resources in trying to come up with cutting edge, state-of-the-art smartphones with unbelievable features that will take humanity to the next level. Each time Samsung or Apple releases a new phone into the market, it generates media buzz and tidal waves comparable to a tsunami, but when Tecno releases one of its low-end products, it barely makes the news. My advice in this aspect is that Tecno should, as a matter of urgency, create a flagship product similar to Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy that will boast of highly innovative state-of-the-art functionalities that will get the worldwide media talking about them and give Apple and Samsung a run for their money. This will also create another niche for them, one that will cater for more moneyed customers within and outside Africa and the Middle East.

2. The major low point for Tecno in Nigeria when it comes to branding has so far been the fact that they have not been able to shake off their “Chinese” tag. People in this part of the world usually associate Chinese-made products (especially phones) with inferiority. They are seen as lesser-quality alternatives to superior Western, Japanese and South Korean products which people rush to because of their relative pocket-friendliness. Many Tecno users here feel embarrassed whenever their phones are referred to as “China Phones”, making them appear inferior. I think the Tecno guys should work towards re-branding the company and convince us that their phones are more than just any other Chinese phone.

1. One thing that dictates market trends all over the world is the taste of the consumers. As we all know, taste for various goods and services change over time as new trends emerge. One of such changing trends in the world of technology brought Tecno into the game. They were able to carve out a niche for themselves and become a dominant force in the smartphone business as far as Africa (which is its primary base) is concerned. They offered what more established players in the market offered, but for less. A high-end, powerful Android phone that would normally cost you around US$650 now became available for half that price, thanks to Tecno. In the process they was able to dislodge some established companies from some sections of the market, particularly one-time favourites, Blackberry. People embraced the new trend. They saw the prospects of owning such powerful gadgets that come at relatively no cost as exciting and attractive. There is no guarantee that things will remain that way, though. Other companies may introduce their own trends. Apple may establish a subdivision that will focus on the budget smartphone niche and target the low-income earners in Africa, while Samsung may look to expand their already-successful budget smartphone section into Africa. If any of those things happen, it will inevitably be the end of the road for Tecno, unless they counter it with their own innovative ideas which I believe they would.
