Foreign AffairsLessons from the Kenyan Mall Attack by JMOI(op):
The four-day siege at Kenya’s upmarket Westgate Mall which began on Saturday may be over, according to Kenyan authorities, but the dust raised by this assertive and fearless terrorist attack in the East African country is yet to settle. Questions have been asked of Kenya and the preparedness of its security forces to handle a terrorist attack of this magnitude.

Over the course of the siege which lasted for four days, before government forces were able to regain control of the shopping complex from suspected Al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militants, about 68 people were confirmed dead, among them were a prominent Ghanaian poet, Kofi Awoonor, 6 Kenyan soldiers and 5 of the attackers. Scores have been injured and many are still reeling from the shock and are in disbelief. No-one in Kenya believed that al-Shabab could launch such a sustained and prolonged attack which is a marked shift from their previous hit-and -run modus operandi.

Now that the standoff is all over, what lessons can Nigerians – the leaders and the led alike – learn from this inglorious incident? What measures should we put in place to ensure that such a thing does not happen anywhere within the boundaries of our country. If the worst comes to the worst and such an attack is launched anywhere in Nigeria, how long will it take the security forces and agencies to bring the situation under control and reduce the casualty figures that may arise as a result of such unfortunate and unforeseen event. Nigeria, though, is not new to terrorist attacks, but it has never been confronted with one that came in the shape of the Westgate Mall siege.

Our security forces should always be proactive

Our security forces, both paramilitary and military, should always be a step ahead of these terrorists. For every trick they have, the security forces should have four. They (security agencies) shouldn’t wait for them to strike first before they swing into action; proactive measures should be taken to prevent such occurrence. Information gathering and nationwide surveillance should be top on their agenda to forestall any possible attack. Security should be tightened, not only in those regions of the country that have been identified as hot spots, but also in places that can be easy and unlikely targets for those terrorists.

Everyone should be on the alert at all times

We as citizens should play our part in securing our lives and the lives of the people around us. Everything should not be left to the security forces alone. They cannot be at every square inch of a country as big as Nigeria at the same time. The citizens should always be on the lookout for those signs that may be pointers to an attack, especially in public places like malls, schools, hospitals, markets, churches, mosques, motor parks and recreation centers. These are easy targets for the terrorists because of the sheer number of people that visit those places and the absence of tight security measures.

Curbing the proliferation of small arms

It is easier now than ever before to launch a large-scale and sustained terrorist attack such as the one that was witnessed in Kenya despite the great advancement in intelligence gathering and surveillance technology that has been recorded in recent times. This is due of the sheer number of small arms and light weapons in circulation all over the world at the moment. The acquisition of these arms have become almost stress-free thanks to incessant conflicts here and there in most parts of the world. When those wars must have come to an end, the unused and unrecovered weapons remain in circulation; some are sold for profit while others are retained by the different actors in the conflicts for protection in the event of another conflict in the future. In addition to that, the production of these arms and ammunition by local manufacturers and blacksmiths have gone unchecked over the years. This is where the government should step in and regulate the manufacture and distribution of such weapons.

I'm surprised that Rick Ross only made 6 million bucks this year. That's rather too poor. And I think that Hip-Hop artistes are not that highly paid compared to their R&B counterparts. Madonna made 70 million dollars this year alone despite having no new musical projects of note and Beyonce made close to 50 million dollars despite being a nursing mother. On the average, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus are worth around 105 and 110 million bucks respectively, while Lil Wayne is worth just 80 million bucks (legitimately, not including drugs and other illegal stuff -- you didn't hear it from me) and Drake is not even worth up to 30 million bucks.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Swansea City Vs Arsenal (1 - 2) On 28th September 2013 by JMOI(op): 8:12am On Sep 26, 2013
Swansea host Arsenal FC at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, in what promises to be an entertaining fixture. The last match between these two sides ended in a 2-0 victory for the Gunners as Monreal and Gervinho scored for the away side. Arsenal have had the upper hand against Welsh club, losing twice in the last six matches against them. Swansea’s last victory against Arsene Wenger’s men came back in 2012, when Michu scored a brace.

Swansea made a poor start to their campaign with back to back defeats against Manchester United and Tottenham in the opening two rounds. Michael Laudrup’s side has turned things around since then and are currently ninth on the league table. But the Welsh side are coming into this game on the back of humiliating League Cup defeat at the hands of Birmingham City. Swansea conceded three goals in the second half against the Championship side and will look to put out a better performance against the Gunners.

Arsenal on the other hand have had a dream start to their league campaign and have turned things around brilliantly after their much talked about opening day loss against Aston Villa at the Emirates. Since that loss Arsenal have won eight matches on the bounce and currently lead the league table. They are coming into this game on the back of scrappy victory over West Brom in the League Cup, where the match was forced to go to the penalties. But it was second string side that was fielded in the midweek game and the big names are set to return against Swansea.

Chelsea with just 15? Laughable, it's not possible. They've won about 11 major trophies since 2002 alone.

I like Ngige, I think he's a good leader, but the problem he will have in Anambra state is his APC platform. The Igbos perceive it as a "foreign" party so he has a lot of work to do if he's to convince Anambrarians to vote for him. I see Willie Obiano winning this one, though he's not as popular as Ngige.

PoliticsINEC Releases List Of Candidates For the forthcoming Anambra Polls by JMOI(op): 9:54pm On Sep 24, 2013
The The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) today released the names of 23 governorship candidates for the Anamabra polls, for the people of Anambra to begin the process of choosing candidates of their choice in the fourth coming November 16 election.

INEC says it has made use of the court orders and the form submitted by parties to compile the names on its candidates list.

For APGA and PDP which had issues with its candidates, INEC has published Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu as the PDP candidate and Mr. Willie Obiano is for APGA.

While Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah is for Labour Party and Mr. Chris Ngige is for the APC.

INEC says the names on the list are the people permitted to stage campaigns for the election.

The battle to resolve the pdp candidate has been on for several weeks, a tough contest between Mr. Tony Nwoye and senator Andy Uba, but both men didn’t make INEC’s list.

The INEC however warned that only those on the list published by it are allowed to conduct electioneering campaigns, and any violation of this rule amounts to an electoral offence and security agencies are urged to intervene as such.
