Its undeniable that there is beef for 9ja abroad. Its a 9ja factor. Being rich is not enough for us, we have to have more than other rich guys. The OP was right. The vitriol that has characterised the responses is more than enough proof.
That's why the west is different. There is little or no PhD (pull him down).

There are however those abroad who have condescending attitude too. Those are in the minority as far as I know.

At this rate, even when our successful citizens return home, we definitely will have this same "what makes you better than me complex" I have seen it even in multi national companies in Lagos.

Sad.

And who told you that even 50% of naija abroad are rich? Huh

Dont get comfort-ability confused with wealth.

There is no part of my post that implies that those abroad are richer and certainly I did not have any statistic in there. My point is, even when you are rich, you still want to appear better than the next rich guy. This is where the Acquired Bad Belle Syndrome (ABBS) stems from. A larger percentage of those abroad are not rich, just as much as many are struggling to eke out a living in 9ja.

A Short story to illustrate my point:
A teacher once invited old students for tea/coffee and placed different types of mugs on the table. There was a scramble to get the best looking ones to use by the old students. Even after selecting what they thought was best for them,  they still went on to admire the next guy's mug. The mug adds no value to the coffee. It just shows we are never satisfied till we look better than the next guy even when we have the same thing.

More of a tactical appointment than any other reason. Divide the camp of the enemy or widen the rift between them.

This is why Turai and co should have united the family when they rode on Sheu's name to power and then fashied them,

Politics / Re: Have Nigerian Taxi Drivers Suddenly Become Rich Or Telling Fantastic Stories by JoeGaruba: 1:15pm On Mar 25, 2010
I dont know why but Nigerians know how to hustle Smiley
A Nigerian and a white man ding the same job,
and I bet the Nigerian would have a house etc before the white man does
from what ive seen Grin

An average 9ja person is thinking outside the box. If we could survive with so little in 9ja, we definitely can excel where hard work is rewarded.

3 houses in the US? did he pay cash or Mortgage ? He could be telling the truth. at least he did not tell you what type of house it was.  Maybe he has other income sources.

In Maryland, I hear on average days cabs makes $200-$350 daily if the day was good. However, many other oyinbo driver I see dont look that successful to  own 3 houses etc.

Its one of those easy jobs to do. Some Africans (especially East Africans), not just 9ja prefer to do this rather than go compete for the scarce office jobs with oyinbo or the usual hourly paid jobs.

I dont doubt he travels home etc since he collects mostly cash and tips+ the original fare, he could be making all he claims since he will only pay tax on what he says he makes. tax bracket for most office jobs depending on your income could be as much as 33%. The long hours and the quality of life however is another thing.

Trust a brother to wreck a winning formula . The law must be upheld. There is no sympathy for him for being a repeat offender. All thos e angry at the British should take him in. Its their land and they can do what they like.

Green card holders in the US risk being denied citizenship or even get deported if they have a DUI/DWI (driving under influence) on their record.

This is a country where one human life is valued, protected and respected. If he runs a red and kills a pedestrian (child, mother or even a family) at a crossing elsewhere on the roads, they will prosecute all who should have sent him home and sack them. I guess they love their jobs and worked hard to get it so they did the right thing.

This probably explains why we are where we are in 9ja if some can still come to his defense. cry

He should come and be driving rough in 9ja.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Why The Age Discrimination On Jobs? by JoeGaruba: 6:32pm On Mar 24, 2010
Not sure if someone else raised this but it happens because we allow it.

Labor laws are virtually none existent. The countries that hire regardless of age/sex/religion/sexual orientation etc have laws that guarantee the citizens the rights to equal opportunity.

Labor laws in 9ja is a joke. Is it this lot in NASS that would not let the child rights bill pass that would enact laws we can enforce? I probably dont see that coming anytime soon.

There is NO REASONABLE justification to discriminate based on AGE or any other yardstick if you meet the required academic qualification.

Unless we begin to agitate for employee rights to be protected by law, this will continue.

Music/Radio / Re: Why Are Styl-plus So Broke.!? by JoeGaruba: 5:59pm On Mar 16, 2010
There are two possible scenarios I can think of:

1. They were poorly managed/ did not manage their fortune and fame well and don't have much to show for their success.  This would mean not only did they fail to develop their weakness(es) but also failed to improve on their strengths.  It could be financial/talent/skill(or lack of it). There is a possibility that they might have been shortchanged by their PR/Promoters etc. They would not be the only victims of this. Besides, many people chill out after a winning streak. Just like the Snoozer Eagles will sleep in second half if they have a first half lead. grin

2.  They might be laughing to the banks while we call them under performers. Like most posters have said and I agree, showing off how much you have or what you want people to think think you have is quite stupid. Living beyond ones own means can only bring more heartache. If the Honda prelude is still working/pumping and the accelerator is not stuck like the Prius, they will only get to the same destination maybe 5-10 mins later than the guy driving CLK. Its the same roads, traffic, police check point etc. Maybe they are saving for the time when their talents and skill would desert them. I guess some prefer to live now than later.  This however does not explain the decline in performance. They like we all, need to constantly reinvent ourselves. Change (for the better, I hope) is the only constant thing in life we should strive for.

A simpler approach to life will do as all a load of good. wink

Family / Re: Can A Man With Ac Genotype Marry A Woman With As Genotype by JoeGaruba: 8:14pm On Mar 05, 2010
Being AS myself, I was lucky enough to have known this before leaving secondary school.

I had to invent ways to stylishly find out from my then potential girlfriends and my eventual wife what their genotype was.

My friends and their families wend through a lot of pain. One went as far as making it till she was 30+ but she still lost the battle.

If you truly love that person, don't take the risk.

Wonder if any of y'alls saw 'Bad Taste' ?
Just like the name. Real bad taste.

'Ware wolf in London' or something like that gave me nightmares for a while as a kid.

I am so fed up with SAW, it might make it to SAW 101. Why do they keep making the sequel?
With they hope they might get it right?

One place I played for a while was www.gameknot.com .

You get a tournament every now and then. Challenge players or just play blitz.

I had the regular free membership and you get ratted after 10 or 20 games.

Anyone who wants to argue this is man made does not know enough about Geology/ Seismology.

8.8 is not something you can deploy HAARP or Star to simulate even if it could.

Such imaginative minds should rather channel this energy into more realistic troubleshooting attempts.

It was worth a laugh though so thanks.
Nairaland / General / Why Dont We Have Live Chat On Nairaland ? by JoeGaruba: 8:36pm On Mar 03, 2010
My people,

With the number of posts and got gists circulating per second, should Nairaland have real time chat too?

Following threads is fun but real time chat could add extra flavour. Or is it here hidden somewhere?

What say y'all ?

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Beware Of Marketing Vacancies In Banks! by JoeGaruba: 7:31pm On Mar 03, 2010
Its pros vs cons. However, there is overwhelming evidence that banks are using the carrot before the donkey to get their targets met. The donkey rider gets where they want but the donkey never eats the carrot

Its quite unrealistic to set targets of hundreds of millions for workers in such economy. Like one or more posters have said, what do they do with all these funds to improve our economy? In the rest of the world, they would issue loans at rates that make sense. Who can afford the interest rates and the hidden service charges that will nick you at each transaction. I will not be surprised if they start charging you for depositing cash.

We have a long way to go in 9ja. I turned down a bank offer too for an engineering job that paid like 30% less. Money should not be the only consideration for taking a job. Quality of life and sound working environment mean more to me. There is nothing as good as looking forward to go to work on Monday. I wonder how many bankers do,

However, if it is all you have to look forward to, Na God I take beg you, develop a thick skin and go through the motions. Even if not for the money, for the experience. Gaps in your resume also count against you if you will be looking for a job. its a demonstration of your "hire-ability" if there is such a word,  You may even meet people that may open doors to you.

May God help us all.

Politics / Re: Why Is Nigeria So Difficult To Develop? by JoeGaruba: 2:39am On Dec 20, 2009
When Adedibu was selecting politicians in Oyo state and South West for the PDP, how do you expect you and I without weapons, charms and police
backing to stand up to them?

Its like a father asking a two year old child, "what have you done for me lately ?" Its sick if you could think that we have to just say everyone should do
his part and that would be all. You cant build something on nothing and expect it to stand! its that simple,

As long as people like some of the posters here feel the citizens will bail themselves out and in the same stride the nation, we will never move on.

God bless Nigeria

I have a feeling you are looking for sympathy. You'll get none from me.

You should have thought things through the first time. Just as you made up your mind to marry someone you now claim you don't love,
so also find a solution. If a car, house is broken, you fix it and not just go get a new one because its better. The grass is always greener
on the other side, till you get there.
Education / Re: Why Is The English Language Skill Of Nigerian Graduate So Appalling? by JoeGaruba: 5:38pm On Jun 27, 2009
The educational system in 9ja does not provide much in support of a sound English foundation.

You can not build something on nothing and expect it to stand.

Those that have a good command of the language got extra help somewhere (books, magazines, TV and speaking with like minds.)
The Latinos in the US have the same problem.

I remember in secondary school the teacher was reading an essay she corrected and there were holes in the students write up.
We all had a big laugh at the unwilling volunteers script. Guess what? That was the best in the class! Gone are the days when clerks
spoke and wrote beautiful English. Education has been privatized. You need to pay up if you want your ward to meet up.

This original poster should reconsider the applications since he/she fell within the same broad stroke she painted us with.
I am ready for my English lessons now.

Business / Re: Best Nigerian Bank? by JoeGaruba: 3:37pm On Jun 27, 2009
In terms of being away from home and to be able to send in small thing often before Uncle Sam and Iya Charlie finish all, is there a bank that has the safeguards to avoid us losing money since we are not on ground to monitor things.

Which has the smoothest on-line banking access?
Charges little or no COT?
Has a branch in US or UK that you can withdraw cash from?

Thanks

Business / Re: Nigeria–Russia Set To Sign Nuclear Deal by JoeGaruba: 6:30pm On Jun 20, 2009
Its kind of odd that all the gas that oil companies flare that is causing environmental degradation and global warming cannot be used to generate electricity
and we are looking for help from Russia for Nuclear power!

Like someone said, we would just be a dumping ground for Russian nuclear waste and get old technology from the Russians. There is nothing wrong with
the idea but we have no culture to maintain simple things like NITEL, NEPA/PHCN, rail, roads,  hospitals and the next thing is Nuclear Power? They better
place the plant in Yaradua's village so they can deal with the consequences of the faulted rush into Nuclear power.

We just cant buy solutions off the shelf we have to develop a problem solving culture first. If its like any of the other Utopian dreams our government has proposed,
it will die on the blocks.

God save Nigeria.
