Study Area

The study area is Abakaliki metropolis which happens to be the capital of the present day Ebonyi state. Abakaliki is located 64 kilometers southeast of Enugu in the south eastern part of Nigeria with 13 local government areas, having so many freshwater and marine habitats. It has latitude of 6.32oN and a longitude of 8.12oE. Agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents containing various organic and inorganic pollutants, like solvents, oils, heavy metals, pesticides and fertilizers etc. from both natural and anthropogenic sources are invariably discharged into these aquatic habitats directly or indirectly through run-off, leaching or seepage especially during the rainy season or as windblown materials during the dry season without their proper treatment. These lead to changes in the water quality. The waters are being used for public, industrial supply, irrigation and fishing purposes, therefore it is imperative to monitor the metal pollution. Furthermore there have never been any published reports on this background. These freshwater habitats were selected on the criterion of possessing various freshwater snails and presumed to accumulate heavy metals. The freshwater habitats that served as the precise study areas were; Unagboke stream, Ituma stream, Oni stream, Ngele stream, and Amike–aba stream.

Kim and Kim in (2007) had conducted studied on heavy metals accumulation in the Oxyloma hirasei from the Upo wetland. Jan et al., (2011) also studied heavy metal in the accumulation in pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis in freshwater. Astani et al., (2012) also studied the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in soft body tissues of the gastropods Thais mutabilis and also the sediments from the intertidal zone of Bandar Abbas.

Freshwater Snails As Bioindicator For Heavy Metals In Abakaliki Metropolis

A total of fifty snails comprising of Bulinus natalensis and Bulinus forskalii were used as bioindicators in this research work for heavy metals like Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu) and Iron (Fe) in five study areas within Abakaliki metropolis which included Unagboke stream, Ituma stream, Oni stream, Ngele stream, and Amike–aba stream. The obtained result using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) showed that the concentration of Iron (Fe) was highest in Ngele stream (0.289mg/l) while the concentration of Zinc (Zn) was the same at Amike-aba and Ngele streams (0.105mg/l) while being a little bit lower in concentration at Oni (0.023mg/l), Ituma (0.029mg/l) and Unagboke streams (0.002mg/l) with Copper (Cu) having the lowest concentration at all the five study areas. The result still showed that the bioindicators used in this research work were intermediate hosts of the Schistosoma parasite.

The term "heavy metals" was in use as far back as 1817, when Gmelin divided elements into non-metals, light metals and heavy metals (Habashi, 2009). Over the past two decades, the term “heavy metals” has been used increasingly in various publications and in legislation related to chemical hazards and the safe use of chemicals (Duffus, 2001). Criteria adopted to define heavy metals have included density, atomic weight, atomic number, or periodic table position (Duffus, 2002). Density criteria range from 3.5 g/cm3 to above 7 g/cm3. Atomic weight definitions start at greater than 22.98 to greater than 40 (Hawkes, 1997).

Former Super Eagles star, Garba Lawal has said Coach Sunday Oliseh did not apply wisdom in appointing a new captain for the senior national team.

On Tuesday, Oliseh and Enyeama came close to exchanging blows in faraway Belgium over the decision of the coach to appoint Ahmed Musa the next captain of the Super Eagles.

The decision forced Enyeama who has been capped 101 times and reigned as Super Eagles captain since the retirement of Joseph Yobo to call it quit with the national team.

Speaking with Daily Trust, Lawal said Oliseh has every right to appoint his own captain but the manner in which he went about the whole appointment was faulty.

He reiterated that the coach did not give Enyeama the respect he deserves as the captain and longest serving member of the present Super Eagles.

Lawal maintained that if he were in Oliseh’s position, he would have sat down with Enyeama for discussion to avoid any open confrontation.

 “I am not with the team in Belgium and I don’t know exactly what happened. But Oliseh as the coach of the national team has the right to appoint his own captain.

“However, he did not do it the right way. He should have sat down with Enyeama for discussions. Enyeama too has paid his dues and deserves some respect. If you ask me, he was not treated fairly.”

Lawal also said the action of the coach is capable of bringing divisions in the team.

“I am afraid what he has done is not good for team spirit. It can easily lead to divisions in the team. There is no doubt that it will impact negatively on the team’s two international friendlies against DR Congo and Cameroon,” he said.
