GOVERNOR OBASEKI'S RARE COURAGE IN IMPLEMENTING THE TRADITIONAL RULERS AND CHIEF'S LAW OF 1979. We, members of Edorodion Union, heartily salute governor Obaseki for the rare courage he displayed in the implementation of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law of 1979. The 1979 law is the extant law guiding the appointment of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs and their activities in Edo state and even Delta state. The law gives the governor and the state executive council the sole prerogative to constitute traditional councils in all the 18 local government areas in Edo state. This is the only law that recognized the role of traditional rulers as agents of change in modern Edo state. The constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria did not give any role to traditional rulers in the present dispensation. Traditional rulers in the state are placed under the purview of the ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs. It is disheartening to hear few Benins criticizing, vilifying, and even insulting the wake and see governor for the courageous act of giving the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs in the state, particularly the Edo south, the necessary re-engineering in order to meet modern challenges. It is out of place for some people to accuse the governor of doing what he did because he lost out on the issue of the returned artifacts. We can authoritatively say that the governor has not coveted having the artifacts to himself but had supported the building of the palace museum. It is on record that the governor had on behalf of the state government donated one hundred million naira to the building of the palace museum. It is also uncharitable to accuse the governor of bulkanizing the Benin kingdom. It is this same sing-song that played out during the last exercise in attempt by the progressives in Benin in recommending the creation of over 12 local government areas in Edo south , wherein only seven local government councils were eventually created to the chagrin of the progressives in Benin. It is achaic, anachronistic, and atavivistic to fight for a kingdom that is retained by the goodwill of the people in the name of bulkanization. There is nothing to bulkanize in the kingdom as it has remained intact and enduring since the creation of the seven local government councils in Edo south. Does it not occur to these critics and agents of precambrian thinking that their achaic and untutored ideas and retrogressive views are inhibiting development in the kingdom. Iguobazuwa, Abudu, Okada, Ehor and Idogbo have been local government headquarters for decades but none of them bear semblance of a modern day administrative domain. Is there anyone of them that look like Uromi or Ekpoma or Auchi in terms of development. In spite of the presence of a university in Okada, it hasn't stripe it of the garb of a typical village. Iguobazuwa, Ehor, Abudu remained undeveloped today due to the unprogressive nature of the kingdom defenders. The Benin Traditional Council has been in existence since the seventies and it has not significantly impacted on the life of the ordinary Benin man and women due to its conservative nature. Now that the able and diligent governor has implemented the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law of 1979, to its letter, some unprogressive elements are poised to truncate the noble effort. Returning to the old way of doing things is not only retrogressive but also unprogressivie. Any traditional system that is not dynamic, responsive, and bears no significant impact on the life of the ordinary Benin man and women, can not be useful to anyone in the 21st century. More than ten years ago, the Ijaws in Edo South installed 5 traditional Rulers in their communities but none of these critics have been able to do anything about the situation. They are also aware that the Ijaws have driven virtually all Benin people from their villages bordering their communities and claimig same, yet the kingdom defenders have been silent. To begin to refer to people in the modern day era as slaves and rebels seem uncultured, intellectually lazy , and smack of arrogance on the part of these Benin irredentists. The creation of traditional councils in Edo south does not in any way infridge on the right and authority of the Benin monarch, rather it has strengthened the position of Oba of Benin as the foremost traditional Ruler in Edo south in particular, and Edo state in general. Now that the governor has revived the laws as espoused in the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law to use traditional Rulers and Chiefs as agents of grassroots development, all hands must be on deck to move Edo south forward. We cannot continue to propagate achaic, anachronistic, and atavivistic ideas in modern society. Eguaogie Edoimioya |

Naja’atu Bala Muhammad, a Director in the Bola Tinubu 2023 presidential campaign, has resigned. She was the Director of Civil Society in the Presidential Campaign Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The exit of 67-year-old Naja’atu comes one month to the presidential election. In 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed her as a Commissioner at the Police Service Commission (PSC). In her resignation letter to APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, Naja’atu decried the state of the nation. The politician said recent developments in the political and democratic space make it impossible for her to continue participating in party politics. “The challenges that Nigeria faces today require me to continue championing the struggle for a better country with a clear conscience as I remain absolutely loyal to Nigeria”, she noted. In a statement on Saturday, the activist said she left the scene after the realization that her values and beliefs no longer aligned with party politics. Naja’atu observed platforms have no ideological differences and are “robes that politicians wear to serve their personal needs and interests”. “I am committed to supporting individuals that are truly interested in addressing the root causes of our challenges. To remain true to such commitments, one must be willing to take bold and decisive steps.” The statement expressed regret that citizens still face insecurity, poverty, inequality, and lack of access to basic services. Naja’atu said the problems require the consolidated efforts of competent and patriotic leadership across every level of governance. Ahead of 2023, Hajiya Naja, as fondly called, advised Nigerians to be “aware of the consequences of their decisions and their choices. In November, she demanded the prosecution of First Lady Aisha Buhari over the detention of Aminu Mohammed, a final-year student of Federal University Dutse |
THE PROPOSED PLANNED SUSPENSION OF SOME ENIGIE IN THE SEVEN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO SOUTH OVER THEIR LETTER TO EDO STATE GOVERNOR Going through that section 28 sub section 1 reads: 28.(1) The executive council may withdraw the approval of the appointment of , or suspend or depose, any traditional ruler, regent, traditional chief or honourary chief whether appointed before or after the commencement of this edict, if it is satisfactory that such withdrawal, suspension or deposition is required according to customary law or is necessary in the interest of peace or order or good government. We the leaders of Bini Chronicle, a social cultural organization for the preservation of Benin history have observed with utter consternation the outcry, and criticism that greeted the letter written by the Enigie in the seven local Govt area of Edo south, to the Governor of Edo State. Our findings has shown that the agitations by the Enigie has been hijacked by some social media activist or campaigners who want to make names for themselves through cheap means, who never mean well for our dear kingdom but rather wish to be distractors and cogs in the wheel of progress We have decided to advise those fueling discord with uncomplimentary remarks, falsehoods and threat to cautious and give peace a chance rather than putting our traditional institutions in public ridicule or in a bad light. Suspending the Enigie will not augur well for all the general wellbeing of all; rather, it will wilden the gap between the traditional actors and the people, while allowing non traditional actors to enter the race to cause a breakdown of law and order in our dear State. The Question is WHO HAS THE POWER TO SUSPEND A TRADITIONAL CHIEF RECOGNISE BY LAW?. Will it not also amount to self defeat for the palace to suspend Enigie who have not infringed laws of the land? when other feasible means are available to iron-out the issue because many sympathizer and onlookers will be keen to know why the Enigie are being persecuted. It will send bad signals to their respective domains and communities as their villages and subject will not fail to rally round them because they were all carried along before writing the said letter to the state government because the issue raised in the letter is only pertinent to the state governor. The suspension, deposition and withdrawal of a traditional title gazzetted under the Bendel state's traditional rulers and chiefs law of 1979 as applicable in Edo and Delta state solemnly rest with the Executive council of the state and it must confirm with the relevant section of the law, hence nobody has the right or concession outside the governor to suspend any traditional title holder as gazzetted in section 28 sub section (1) of the Bendel state's traditional rulers and chiefs law of 1979. We propose that at this critical stage of our dear state that insecurity has laced all nooks and crannies of our beloved country Nigeria, that if the Enigie are empower through constitution of traditional council in the seven local government area of Edo south, it will help to compliment and bolster government security architecture because this Enigie are closer to the people at the grassroots. It is in this light that we implore the Executive council to partner with our revered monarch, the oba of benin to constitute traditional council for the seven local government area in Edo south. Oba gha tor kpele Iseeeeeeeeereee

*HON ELIZABETH ATIVIE; A CANDIDATE FOR THE NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL ELECTION OR OF THE LABOUR PARTY? WHAT A MISPLACEMENT OF PRIORITY!!!* Amidst the numerous issues bedeviling the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo state, nothing could ever have been more unfortunate than having the supposedly very respected Rt. Hon. Mrs Elizabeth Uyimwen Ativie throw caution to the wind by deciding to resign every atom of decorum as regards the upcoming elective Congress of NYCN. As a beneficiary of a just, fair, democratic and an all inclusive process that led to her emergence against all odds many years ago as an elected Chairman and later President of the state and national bodies respectively, a lot would have been expected of her. But of course, she aligned against common sense, trampled upon her good will and sacrificed every norm by engaging in a verbal war between ELECO and CPC. It will interest you to know that both committees are principally made up of young people of less that 34 years old. As a mother and grandmother, one begins to wonder her reason for jettisoning/switching her role as an advisor for evidently making attempts at hoodwinking, cajoling, and threatening young people who certainly fall between the ages of her children. The past few weeks have been noteworthy. Instead of Mrs. Ativie to concentrate on her campaign as the labour party candidate for Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency, she has surprisingly been neck deep in campaigning for the upcoming elective congress of NYCN- raining insults on anyone who differ with her and who tries to advise/remind her of the NYCN constitution or her role as an advisor. Simply put, it has become a comic case of the adviser becoming the advisee. As if that wasn't enough, not long ago, she went further to put a call to Comr. Iyobosa Irughe, a former PRO of NYCN-, Edo state believing she was on to Mr. Peter O. Aguebor, the immediate past Chairman of NYCN, Egor LGA. Upon introduction and knowing she was on to Comr. Iyobosa, she accused him of opposing her unlawful and undemocratic intent to rig the 2022 Edo State NYCN Congress/Election. As consequence for his decision not to support any of her shenanigans, she made reference to Comr. Iyobosa's what's app profile picture which has his wife and daughter and furthered her threat thus: *"Is that not you and your family on your profile? Why do you want to die because of Youth Council? My friend leave the Council alone".* In his response to her, Comr. Iyobosa assured her of laying a formal threat complaint to the appropriate authorities after which she abruptly ended the unethical conversation. This conversation initiated by @+2348033486879 belonging to and registered in the name of Hon. Elizabeth Ativie was witnessed by three other persons at about 5:29pm. Just to be clear, it is on record that Hon. Ativie has threatened the entire family of Iyobosa Irughe and will be held responsible should anything happen to him or any of his family members. We will not relent in ensuring the right thing is done. We will not accommodate any intention to steal the collective mandate of young people as was done in Labour party in the case of Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency primary election after her failed attempt in APC primary election. Is this what Labour Party is promising Nigerians?

*EDO YOUTHS CALL FOR SACK OF THE COMMISSIONER FOR YOUTH AND GENDER:* _*The commissioner for Youths & Gender, Barr. Adaze Emwanta has sacrilegiously made one of his close aide, Sarah Igunbor, a non management member of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo state chapter, head of transition committee.*_ You will recall that the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State chapter have been witnessing a rift in the past few weeks following the failure of the suspended Executive committee led by Comrade Osahon Davison Obasuyi to put machineries in place to usher in a new administration. In a bid to resolving it's crisis and restore peace back to the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State Chapter - constitutionally, the management committee which is the second highest decision making organ of the organization after congress, in it's wisdom, constituted a seven (7) man caretaker committee to put in motion, modalities for the conduct of an election in 60 days which the dissolved executive failed to achieve. Consequently, the Commissioner decided to call for a truce meeting between the new leadership of the council headed by Comrade Ehis Osagie and the dissolved executive of Osahon Obasuyi in order to amicably resolve the lingering issues bedeviling the council. After a painstaking meeting, it was clear that the Hon. Commissioner who is supposed to be an unbiased umpire became an interested party. Sequel to the above, a publication sponsored by the said commissioner took his interest too far by announcing one Sarah Igunbor an Aide to Governor Obaseki and also a social media promoter of the current government, Chairman of the transition committee for another six (6) months, which is in total contravention of the constitutional provisions of the NYCN as it relates to this said issue. It is public knowledge that the said Sarah Igunbor is a very close ally of the Commissioner for Youths & Gender and had promised her a week ago of this appointment, according to close sources. The entire youths of Edo state wish to therefore state categorically, that the said Sarah Igunbor is not and has never being a member of the National Youth Council, as membership is not on individual basis rather on organization as clearly spell out in it's constitution. The youth council by functionality is not a partisan organization. We therefore call on the commissioner to immediately withdraw that list and tender an unreserved apology to the entire youths of Edo within 24hrs of this publication. We also urge him not to drag the pragmatic governor and the government of Edo state to the mud. The general public should be aware that the National Youth Council of Nigeria is a non-partisan and independent umbrella youth organization.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has denied making promises of better power supply. Speaking in an interview with Channels television, Fashola said that his plans did not consider vandalization of pipelines because he was always focused on power generation. “Let us be careful when you claim that I made promises because I am ever so conscious of the things that I say and I believe that if I recollect correctly, it was when I was unveiling my ministries, probably sometime late December last year, and it is unlike me to make promises on things I don’t control,” he said. “If you check the words I used, I shared with you our plans if it worked and where we will be. Those promises don’t factor in vandalisation. You know when they teach you how to generate power in school, they don’t teach you how to deal with vandalisation. “When they teach you how to do banking, they don’t teach you about round-tripping so those are the assumptions that things would remain normal. There is no nation in the world that wants electricity that vandalizes the assets that produce electricity; it doesn’t make any sense. “I can control what my team does, I can promise you what my team efforts will produce but I can’t control behaviour that is counterproductive. Those pipelines are national assets; they were built with our common wealth, the people whose territories it passes are custodians of it. “Let us assume that the people who are also custodians of Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro dams go to break them down because they are angry, then who gets power?” |
“What if Ize-Iyamu wins the election”? Asked; one of the persons at a newspaper stand by the Ring Road, Benin City. And then, another countered, “No way…Oshiomhole is going to win” But as the argument went on, nobody bothered to make a correction of who the actual contestants were. There is no gainsaying that Edo State parades some of the most politically active and knowledgeable persons in the entire country. Therefore, it cannot be said that every person present at the newspaper stand were political ignoramuses. Outside the volubility in diatribes with which Oshiomhole is fond of making attacks against perceived holders of different views, lately in Edo state, there have been actions and daily slanderous shots which lend credence to the accusation that Oshiomhole is aiming to achieve a third term tenure by proxy. Initially, what appeared as Oshiomhole’s body language in preference for a particular aspirant zoomed overnight, and to everybody’s bewilderment, crystallized into a fierce battle that must materialize against all odds and reasonable interests. Furthermore, reflecting on the degree of intentional damages done to personal relationships and opposing interests by Oshiomhole should speak volumes about how personal, Godwin Obaseki’s victory in the September 10th 2016 governorship election, is to Oshiomhole. And just as a reminder, in the process of weeding out all known and imagined obstacles, his (Oshiomhole’s) deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu got scandalized as a very diabolic person, who was even plotting to kill him as a perceived main obstacle to his (Odubu’s) governorship quest. Meanwhile, no accusations were made about Odubu’s engagement of such diabolic means against the actual political opponents like Godwin Obaseki and others. And after the scandal has been done to Odubu’s personality without a rebuttal to date, Oshiomhole has been carrying Odubu (his proclaimed 'evil deputy') to acclaim the political sainthood of his preferred candidate, Godwin Obaseki at every campaign rally. What a contradiction at the instance of political expediency in appealing to the political sensibilities of Edo people with all manners of diabolic men, thugs and the progenitors of heavy tax burden and the infamous property tax. On the other hand, if these new dimensions of belligerent or overbearing manner of governance, life threatening accusations, mudslinging, prevention of political opponents from using public places for campaigns, blackmailing with graft accusations and the invitation of EFCC, to mention but a few, can be playfully dispensed with as political expediencies, harmless pranks, or political strategies, then we must begin to appreciate how we have been truncating our civility, economic emancipation and basic freedoms with the acceptance of everything used to portray us as undiscerning, weak and foolish. As a little boy, I was always moved by the stories of Esagho (the privileged one) and Ahukhor (the ill-treated one). It was always a game of destiny in which Ahukhor – the ill-treated one, ultimately gets divine rescue and final victory. This appears to be the silver lining populating Ize-Iyamu’s support base as most Edo indigenes are getting to despise the never-before witnessed manner fratricidal political activities against opponents. On a final note, and just before I forget how the man at the newspaper stand concluded his argument, having managed to secure the needed attention from all present, he said, “If Ize-Iyamu wins; he would be administering the state as a governor, who does not have any political godfather but a recourse to his already well articulated ideas in the pamphlet, titled the SIMPLE AGENDA; whereas, his opponents, we all know their source of power and control. He also advised the audience to disabuse their minds from the antics of politicians ‘giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it. He talked about who is more of Igbinedion’s stooge? As a result, he made us to judge between who Igbinedion used his money with his political or governorship influence to assist in becoming a governor of the state; and the other, who was only appointed as the Secretary to the State when the said secretary was available and qualified to also have been assisted in becoming the governor. He harped on the nature of man and his proclivity to ingratitude. He specifically recalled that if a politician could make very weighty accusations about his well-known loyal or servile deputy for over 7 years, just because of political gains; then such a person should be expected to project more damning imaginations about others especially now that it is becoming clearer that Edo state is aiming to become the first state in the federation to succeed with a third term experimental agenda by default or deceit. But as a busy man, it was time for other issues. And so, I left feeling confused about whether all I heard was not a narrative of a rebranded form of godfatherism, equipped with vicious elements and acerbic scandalmongers for all manners of onslaught. Even more, I was miffed by the contemplation of the state continuing to wallow in mass unemployment and snuffed out economic life. I even got crazier with the mundane or stereotyped image that Edo state has been politically framed into, and wondered if our people would truly allow a third term tenure, pompously tagged “continuity” to happen when the road ahead is signposting ‘route to another authoritative redundancy’. |

Good Evening Niger Deltans. The liberation of the Niger delta people has taken a new swing with the daily emergence of new groups all over the region. The avengers are calling on all groups in the region to be strong and resolute as it is obvious that God is on our side. The groups are much now both real and unreal but if you really fighting for the liberation of the Niger delta people. The high command of the avengers is calling on you not to attack any soldier and those claiming to have anti aircraft missiles should deist from targeting any aircraft. Let us be careful not offend God in the process of trying to liberate our people from the shackles of the Nigerian government because we need God more than anything right now. We also need the international communities as well. Hence, we must desist from any life threatening actions that will derail our genuine struggle for our people. All groups are hereby discouraged from indulging in harassing oil workers and soldiers. We urge you all to help any oil workers or soldiers you see in distress. The military warplanes hovering round our towns and villages have not strike a soul or destroy any property, so those groups with anti aircraft missiles should dry their gunpowder. When it is time to engage the military in combat the whole world will know they started the war not the Avengers. The Niger delta avengers high command will pass the message round that its time to engage on gun battle when the time comes. So far, we have not engaged the Nigeria military in combat; despite the heavy presence of military on the pipelines. we still find way to carry out our actions without attacking soldiers. The avengers will deal with any group that refuses and attack military. The high command is calling on all groups in Rivers, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom to not indulge in any act of kidnapping and attacking of soldiers. The war is on oil installations; “Operation On Flow of Oil” God is our strength; he is going to see the people of Niger delta through. God bless the Niger delta republic. If you're a journalist or media person and you know you haven't challenged this govt. on the increased brutality and killings by Boko Haram and the missing Chibok girls, SHAME on you! I'm amazed the media could go all silent on these issues they cried over on hourly basis under the last administration. Is anyone aware that the new President has NOT visited any attack site or visited any victim of Boko Haram since he got to office? It was an issue then. Now it's no longer an issue. HYPOCRITES. Most of these Nigerian Journalists and Media Houses are bunch of HYPOCRITES! Since he lai Mohammed has denied almost everything he promised and has equally denied the party's manifesto, I think the right thing for him to do at the moment is to sincerely tell us what he has actually got to offer. At least, he is no longer under any pressure as he is already the president. Buhari should simply tell us the things he feels he can do. Enough of the lies. |
Who you help? " Classic Warri question. Actually rhetoric cos if someone is asking this question it means that they are unimpressed with your *achievements. .. Most people say Wahffarians (ppl living in warri) are rude and sarcastic. Or too forward. I think we're just down to earth and upfront . But then I'm partial. I live here. ***wink Personally I think it is a very apt question that fits into a variety of circumstances. ... like if a person is acting all important and uppity , I'd simply ask "who you help?" Hehehe
