Tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris are believed to have been trapped in the landmark site as armed police surrounded its base amid reports of a "gunman" on the loose this evening. People took to social media to share images of the tourist attraction shut off and a police cordon surrounding it, with witnesses being interrogated by police. Officers cleared the area and appeared to search some witnesses. One person tweeted: "#EiffelTower is shut off with a large security presence from Trocadéro - trying to see what if anything is going on…" Another said: "#EiffelTower something not right?" Bob Thomas said on Twitter: "Anyone know what is going on at the Eiffel Tower? All been shut down." Earlier in the evening Bob told the Mirror: "We're stuck in one of the legs outside the lift. We've been locked in. Told it's a full lock down. Nothing official yet. We are currently locked down at the base outside one of the lifts. Been told a guy was acting weird but no confirmed weapon. The staff have been locked in with us." One person has been arrested near the Eiffel Tower, according to French police. Initial reports said the person was carrying a weapon, with some social media users mentioning both a "gun" and a "knife", but police say these reports are unfounded. A spokesman for police in Paris said: "A person was arrested, the incident is finished. He wasn't armed. We'll know more about his motives tomorrow." Paris-based journalist Charlotte Dubenskij said the Eiffel Tower is now open again and trapped tourists have been allowed out. At about the same time as the Eiffel tower incident was taking place, another security scare unfolded at the Gare du Nord, where passengers on the Eurostar were evacuated when a "suspicious item" was found. Zoë Grisedale said: "They have found a suspicious item. We are all to wait outside terminal." Eurostar addressed the incident on social media, saying: "We regret that for security reasons check-in and border controls will need to be repeated for customers of #ES9063. There will be a consequent delay to the departure of #ES9063. Thank you for your understanding." source:http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2017/09/eiffel-tower-paris-on-lockdown-and.html

Pmb should first stop the hate speech from him and his tribe. Likewise his body language on civil servants appointment to his zone is bad. What he said during the last election is coming to pass concerning lopsided appointment by his government. It won't help him this way. He's dividing Nigerians by the day with his body odour. |

Yahoo faces legal battle in U.S. (Reuters/NAN) U.S. judge said Yahoo must face nationwide litigation brought on behalf of well over one billion users who said their personal information was compromised in three massive data breaches, Media reports on Thursday. Wednesday night’s decision from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, was a setback for efforts by Verizon billion Communications Inc, which paid 4.76 dollars for Yahoo’s Internet business in June, to limit potential liability. The breaches occurred between 2013 and 2016, but Yahoo was slow to disclose them, waiting more than three years to reveal the first. Revelations about the scope of the cyber attacks prompted Verizon to lower its purchase price for the company. In a 93-page decision, Koh rejected Yahoo’s contention that breach victims lacked standing to sue, and said it could pursue some breach of contract and unfair competition claims. “All plaintiffs have alleged a risk of future identity theft, in addition to loss of value of their personal identification information,” the judge wrote. Koh said that some plaintiffs also alleged they had spent money to thwart future identity theft or that fraudsters had misused their data. Others, meanwhile, could have changed passwords or canceled their accounts to stem losses had Yahoo not delayed disclosing the breaches, the judge said. While many claims were dismissed, Koh said that the plaintiffs could amend their complaint to address her concerns. “We believe it to be a significant victory for consumers, and willaddress the deficiencies the court pointed out,” John Yanchunis, a lawyer for the plaintiffs who chairs an executive committee overseeing the case, said in an interview. “It’s the biggest data breach in the history of the world.” Verizon spokesman Bob Varettoni said the New York-based company declined to comment on pending litigation. Yahoo is now part of a Verizon unit called Oath. In court papers, Yahoo had argued that the breaches were “a triumph of criminal persistence” by a “veritable ’who’s who’ of cybercriminals,” and that no security system is hack-proof. On March 15, the U.S. Department of Justice charged two officers of the Russian Federal Security Service and two hackers in connection with the second breach in late 2014. The August 2013 breach affected more than one billion accounts, while the 2014 breach affected more than 500 millionn and a third breach occurred in 2015 and 2016. The case is In re: Yahoo Inc Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 16-md-02752. source:http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2017/08/yahoo-in-trouble-over-data-breach.html

By Emmanuel Acha Ahead of the forthcoming elections, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) says it will impose heavy sanctions on broadcast stations which promote hate speeches. The Director General of the commission, Mr Is’haq Kawu, said this on Thursday in Enugu at the inauguration of Family Love FM 99.9 at the European Quarters in Ngwo. Kawu was represented at the event by a director in the commission, Mr Armstrong Idachaba. He said that the commission had taken note of hate speeches from some parts of the country, adding that it would guard against its infiltration in the broadcast industry. “We are already seeing signs of hate speeches among Nigerians and would not tolerate it in the broadcast industry as we prepare for the 2019 elections. “Our broadcast stations should rather be used to engender tolerance, mutual respect as well as promote unity among Nigerians,” he said. Kawu said that the broadcast industry had witnessed tremendous growth in the last few years owing to the complete deregulation of the sector. He said that there were about 800 radio stations in the country, adding that what was expected of them was healthy competition. “We now have a very competitive private sector that is experiencing great growth. “Competition in the sector now has multiplier effects in the country in terms of job creation and education. “The competition among the various players in the industry must continue to be friendly, ‘’ Kawu said. Earlier in an address of welcome, the Group Managing Director of Multimesh Broadcasting Company Ltd., Mr Godfrey Ohuabunwa, said that company was conceived 32 years ago. Ohuabunwa said that the station would usher in a new dimension to broadcasting in the South East Zone of Nigeria. “Our passion for broadcasting has its roots on the need to affect the society that is virtually derailing from basic tenets of upright living and morality. “This decay has affected our society much so that there seem not to be value for life, stewardship and right standing with God,” he said. He said that programmes of the station were structured toward the improvement of family values and standards. Ohuabunwa appealed to regulators in the industry to provide a level playing ground and opportunities for private sector participation in the industry. He also appealed to relevant government agencies to review downwards customs duties and taxes payable on communication and broadcast equipment for greater results. “One of the problems which has continued to bedevil this industry is the cost of operations and roll out,” he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the company is also licensed as a private cable satellite broadcasting company and one of the biggest satellite distribution Pay TV companies. It also has a radio station in Rivers, Abia and Abuja. (NAN) source::http://www.pressnewsng.com.ng/2017/08/hate-speeches-nbc-impose-heavy.html

So painful at this time the lautech students is feeling the heat. Even I heard that they beg ogbeni and ajimobi to give them amnesty. By next month, it will be 6 months that ASUU has locked lautech doors. It is so so unfortunate we are witnessing this barbaric act from ogbeni. I will always say the his second term tenure is disastrous. |
