In 1852, the Church Missionary Society sent David and Anna Hinderer to found a mission. They decided to build the mission and a church in Ibadan when they arrived in 1853.[8]

Ibadan thus had initially begun as a military state and remained so until the last decade of the 19th century. The city-state also succeeded in building a large empire from the 1860s to the 1890s which extended over much of northern and eastern Yorubaland. It was appropriately nicknamed idi Ibon or “gun base”, because of its unique military character.[9]

In Ibadan, unlike other Yoruba cities with traditional kingship institutions, the warrior class became the rulers of the city as well as the most important economic group.

The colonial period reinforced the position of the city in the Yoruba urban network. Your assertion of the fact that there is no true sons and daughters of Ibadan is false, misleading and treacherous. The founding oyo fathers/ familiy in the 1700s/1800s still have their family houses there to this day. It's one thing to read and copy and paste history, it's another thing to understand the history you're reading.

There's no greater or lesser king in present day Yorubaland... everyone rules over his domain and is great in his own right.
But olubadan is the equivalent of what the British call Lord or Duke. Olu in Yoruba means Lord; Olubadan= Lord of Ibadan or the Duke of Ibadan.

Olubadan position was not a kingship before, it was a Baale (like a ruler over village). However, Ibadan city was getting bigger and eventually became a very big city and one of the most populated city in Africa.
Few decades ago, in the modern era, Baale of Ibadan was changed to Olubadan of Ibadan to assume the kingship status.
Ibadan as a town was formed by olden days warriors who usually rested in the location and therefore, there is no true sons and daughters of Ibadan. It is a road side settlement which eventually became a very big city because of its central location to all other big towns in Yoruba.
Olubadan used to be under Alafin of Oyo before. Now, duo with Soun of Ogbomoso are first class obas in Oyo State.
Alafin of Oyo and Ooni of Ile-Ife have been in serious battle supremacy for long time. However, with the create of Osun State out of old Oyo State, the rift seems to be dieing down.

Lol.. Jim Ovia has B.Sc. degree in Business Administration from Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA and not Auchi Poly. It's was Tony Elumelu that went to Ambrose Ali University (note that Ambrose Ali of the 80s had a very high educational standard, thanks to the man it was named after) but even Tony elemelu still went and got a Master's from Unilag and he hardly identifies as someone who went to AAU. My indices is the fact that when you look at this schools which I listed, it has and known to produce some of the smartest people in nigeria, if you even look at tech start-ups as an example that have gone national in the past 10years they usually come from this universities. Plus have you noticed that in top universities in the south you hardly see any northerner....most abokis won't cope in a school like oau, one year in Whitehouse and they'd drop out.
