In fact, from May, 1940, to April 15, 1943, just three short years, the Society made at least 44 predictions of the imminence of Armageddon.[17] Here are a few examples from this period and later:

In September 1940, they said, “The kingdom is here, the king is enthroned. Armageddon is just ahead…. The great climax has been reached” (The Mes­senger, Sept. 1940, p. 6).
In The Watchtower, September 15, 1941 they said, “The FINAL END IS VERY NEAR” (p. 276). “The remaining months before Armageddon…” (p. 288).
On January 15, 1942 they said, “The time is at hand for Jesus Christ to take possession of all things” (p. 28).

Notice that Jesus does not simply tell them to go. He tells them that He has been given all authority both in heaven and on earth, and therefore they are to go. Their whole ministry of making disciples of all nations was rooted directly in the fact that Jesus presently already ruled with all authority in heaven and on earth. Paul likewise writes of His gospel ministry that “we are ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20). Ambassadors are sent by kings. The apostles preached with authority because they were commissioned and sent by Christ who possessed all authority. The Apostles went because their king sent them.

In the book of Revelation, we also read:

“John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen” (Revelation 1:4-7).

Notice the distinction this makes between future events that will transpire at Christ’s coming and the present tense reality of who Jesus already is at the time that John wrote Revelation. John and the churches already knew Jesus to be “the ruler of the kings of the earth.” That was not something Jesus would later become. That was already who He was. Jesus was reigning from heaven over all the kings of the earth at the time John wrote the book of Revelation which, last I checked, was well before October of 1914. Paul again concurs when He writes that, “He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet” (1 Corinthians 15:25).

In Pastor Russell’s Sermons (1917, p. 676), Charles Taze Russell, founder and first president of the
Jehovah’s Witnesses, said of World War I, “The present great war in Europe is the beginning of the Armageddon of the Scriptures.”

After Russell’s death, “Judge” Rutherford continued the tradition of false prophecies given in the name and authority of God. He believed and stated that 1925 would mark the year of Christ’s kingdom. He was wrong.[11] In The Watchtower magazine, September 1, 1922, we find stated, “The date 1925 is even more distinctly indicated by the Scriptures because it is fixed by the law of God to Israel…. [One can see how] even before 1925 the great crisis will he reached and probably passed” (p. 262).

In The Watchtower magazine, April 1, 1923, it stated, “Our thought is that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures” (p. 106). But these and all other predictions proved false.

After utterly failing in the 1914 and 1925 predictions, finding many people leaving the Society, the leaders of the Watchtower became more cautious in setting dates. Nevertheless, they continued to hold out the promise of the immi­nence of Armageddon and the subsequent millennial kingdom. From 1930 to 1939 there were numerous declarations made about the future. Did Jesus become king in 1914?

Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Jesus was not reigning as king in heaven until October of 1914. They profess that “At that time, “the appointed times of the nations” ended, and Jesus Christ was installed as God’s heavenly King.” (“What does the Bible Really Teach?”, pg 217 Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, 2005) While the manner at which they arrive at the 1914 dates is demonstrably erroneous and has produced a continuous chain of false prophecies, there is still another matter to be critiqued in this teaching. Jesus did not wait until the 20th century to become king. The Bible is clear that Jesus was already appointed king at His first coming and has been reigning in heaven since His ascension. The apostles carried out their missionary work precisely on the basis that Jesus was already king. When Jesus issued the great commission, He told them:

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. In 1889 they said, “… we present proofs that the setting up of the kingdom of God has already begun … and that ‘the battle of the great day of God almighty’ (Revelation 16:14), which will end in AD 1914 with the complete overthrow of the earth’s present rulership, is already commenced.”[7] (In their 1915 edition of this same book they changed “AD 1914” to “AD 1915.”)

On July 15, 1894 they said, “We see no reason for changing the figures—nor could we change them if we would. They are, we believe, God’s dates not ours (emphasis added). But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble” (p. 1677 of Reprints, see note 4).

In 1904 they said, “The stress of the great time of trouble will be on us soon, somewhere between 1910 and 1912 culminating with the end of the ‘times of the Gentiles,’ October 1914.”[8]
On May 1, 1914 they said, “There is absolutely no ground for Bible students to question that the consummation of this gospel age is now even at the door…. The great crisis… that will consume the ecclesiastical heavens and the social earth, is very near.”[9]
But the year 1914 ended without a single one of these predictions coming true.[10]

According to Encyclopedia.com, the Babylonian captivity is defined as “the period from the fall of Jerusalem (586 B.C.) to the reconstruction in Palestine of a new Jewish state (after 538 B.C.).”
“You will recall that the Babylonians, under Nebuchadnezzar, after twice laying siege to Jerusalem, finally captured it in 586 B.C.E. Nebuchadnezzar’s army then pillaged the city, destroying the Temple and sending the inhabitants off to exile in Babylonia. (“Biblical Archaeological Review, Biblical Archaeological Review).
“…Nebuchadnezzar promptly invaded his unhappy country and besieged Jerusalem for a year and a half. In 587 Jerusalem fell and numbers of its inhabitants were carried away captive to Babylonia…” (Unger, Merrill, F., Unger’s Bible Dictionary, Moody Press, Chicago, 1966, page 782).
Notice that the year 587 is offered instead of 586. There is sometimes a difference of opinion as to which year is the exact one. Nevertheless, it is obvious that 607 B.C. is not even close.

“586, Jerusalem destroyed and burned (Jer. 52:13b.); people were taken captive (52:28-30). (The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1982, page 1016)

It is quite clear that the Jehovah’s Witness organization is wrong about the 607 B.C. date upon which they place so much of their end times’ theology. If they are wrong about such a basic event and have not changed their error to match historical fact, how can they be trusted to represent biblical truth? They cannot.

The fact is that they can not change their date of 1914 because they have so much invested in it. They are forced to retain their 607 B.C. date even though it is in obvious error. To admit they were wrong is to undermine the whole credibility and truth of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. This they cannot do because they are more dedicated to their organization than they are to the truth.

Has the Watchtower Society ever given false prophecies?
How have the predictions of the Watchtower Society stood the test of history? Let’s look at a few. Frequently the Watchtower has attempted to predict the start of the Battle of Armageddon (the end of the world). (Unless otherwise noted, all quotations are from The Watchtower; dates appear at left.)[4] Let’s look at a few predictions they have made in the name of God concerning the end of the world—what they often call Armageddon. (Because they believe Jesus has already returned invisibly, they look forward to the Battle of Armageddon, which they believe will usher in “paradise earth,” not the Second Coming of Christ.) As you examine these prophecies, see if you really think that God spoke through them and gave the world the truth. Here are just a few of the predictions they have made through the years:

False Prophecy in the Watchtower Society

If the Watchtower Society is the sole channel for God on earth, then according to the Bible its prophecy must come true. How reliable have its prophecies been?

What does the Watchtower Society teach and claim about prophecy?

In The Watchtower, March 1, 1975, Jehovah’s Witness leaders declared, “The Bible itself establishes the rules for testing a prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:20-23 and 13:1-8…” (p. 151). Its own rules, with which we agree, are biblical and are our standard; they demand 100 percent accuracy for any prophecy that is made. The Society’s publication Aid to Bible Understanding teaches all Jehovah’s Wit­nesses that prophecy includes “a declaration of something to come” and that “the source of all true prophecy is Jehovah God.”[1] This publication further states that “correct understanding of prophecy would still be made available by God… par­ticularly in the foretold ‘time of the end’…” (p. 1346). (In context, “time of the end” here includes the emergence of the Watchtower Society.)

Aid to Bible Understanding further defines a “prophet” as “one through whom the divine will and purpose are made known” (p. 1347). (What’s more, the Watchtower Society makes the astonishing claim that it is the true prophetic mouthpiece for God on earth at this time.)[2] Furthermore, the Watchtower tells all Jehovah’s Witnesses that “the three essentials for establishing the credentials of the true prophet” are 1) speaking in Jehovah’s name, 2) “the things foretold would come to pass,” and 3) these prophecies would promote true worship by being in harmony with God’s already-revealed Word. The Watchtower claims that the true prophet would “express… God’s mind on matters… [and] every prediction [will be] related to God’s will, purpose, standards or judgment.”[3]

In light of these lofty claims, the Society has succinctly declared its position and authority. It claims to speak in the name of Jehovah, to be His prophet pre­dicting future events, and to be in harmony with His Word. It confidently predicts that what it says must “come to pass.” The Watchtower, September 1, 1979, declared, “For nearly 60 years now the Jeremiah class [the Jehovah’s Witnesses] have faithfully spoken forth Jehovah’s word” (p. 29).

It is clear from this that the Watchtower Society confidently claims to propheti­cally speak for God. We will now examine some of the implications of its own claims to be speaking for God.

A.D. 1914, 607 B.C., 586 B.C. and the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

An absolutely critical date for the Jehovah’s Witnesses is A.D. 1914. It is the date when, according to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the time of the Gentiles ended (Watchtower, 5/1/93, page 11) and “Jesus-the heavenly warrior Michael-became King of God’s heavenly Kingdom” (Watchtower 11/1/93, page 23). To arrive at this date, the Witnesses take the account in Daniel 4 and apply a 360 day year for each of the seven “times” for a total of 2520 years. They add this date to 607 B.C., their date for the fall of Jerusalem under Nebuchadnezzar, and arrive at 1914 A.D., the date when Jesus supposedly returned invisibly in the heavens (The Truth Shall Make You Free, p. 300), the “appointed time of the nations” ended (The Time is at Hand, page 79), and the beginning of the end of the world commenced (Watchtower 11/15/50, page 438). Please consider the following quote.

“This marked time began in the year (A.D.) 1914. In that important year the ‘appointed times of the nations,’ 2,520 years long, ran out. If we measure back that many years from 1914, we come to the ancient date of 607 B.C. That year was marked for the overthrow of the earthly “throne of Jehovah” and for the destruction of the throne city of Jerusalem and its sanctuary and for the total desolation of the land of the kingdom of Judah.” (From the Book, “Your Will,” 1958, pp. 309-310, Watchtower CD, emphasis added).

Therefore, the date 607 B.C. becomes the critical date in question. Was 607 B.C. the date when Jerusalem fell? No, it wasn’t. No Bible scholar and no archaeological scholar holds to that date. The correct date is 586 B.C. and not 607 B.C. Therefore, the Jehovah’s Witnesses are wrong about 1914 and everything else they attach to that date based on their prophet’s misunderstanding. Let’s verify further than 607 B.C. is the date used by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society before we establish the counter-evidence.

1925 “The year 1925 is here. With great expectation Christians have looked forward to this year. 1931 “There was a measure of disappointment on the part of Jehovah’s faithful ones on earth concerning the years 1914, 1918, and 1925, which disappointment lasted for a time. . . . and they also learned to quit fixing dates for the future….” (Vindication, pp. 338, 339).

1941 “Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord’s provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon,” (Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1941, p. 288).

Watchtower's Dishonest Presentation of its' History

When reading these quotes, it is important to remember that in 1914 the Watchtower was teaching Jesus' presence began in 1874 and his heavenly rulership began in 1878.

"Our belief that the Kingdom began to be setup, or brought into power, in April, 1878, be it observed, rests on exactly the same foundation as our belief that the Lord became present in October, 1874, and that the harvest began at that time." Studies in the Scriptures - Thy Kingdom Come p.235

As late as 1930, the Watchtower was still referring to 1874 as the start of Jesus presence.

"… from the beginning of the Lord’s presence in 1874 the Devil used the Papal system as the chief opposing instrument of God’s kingdom …" Watch Tower 1930 Sep 15 p.275

Those in Watchtower's writing department are well aware of the organisation's history. For instance, the 1993 Proclaimers book states:

"Based on the premise that events of the first century might find parallels in related events later, they also concluded that if Jesus’ baptism and anointing in the autumn of 29 C.E. paralleled the beginning of an invisible presence in 1874, then his riding into Jerusalem as King in the spring of 33 C.E. would point to the spring of 1878 as the time when he would assume his power as heavenly King." Yet in that very same year, Watchtower articles falsely claim:

Deuteronomy 18:22 states that a false prophet is one who, in the name of the Lord, makes a prophecy which does not take place and is not true. How does all of this square with the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that just because they have made a few errors does not mean that they are therefore false prophets?

ARE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES FALSE PROPHETS?- Strike One
First of all, the Watchtower (which is the organizational name of Jehovah’s Witnesses) claimed to have been acting as God’s uniquely-appointed official, or modern-day prophet, when it issued its numerous false predictions. This alone, according to Deuteronomy 18, is enough to qualify them as false prophets.

Deu 18:22  "When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken.

But there’s more.

The prophecies proclaimed by the Watchtower were not considered by the organization as “optional.” In other words, to remain a Jehovah’s Witness in good standing, you must wholeheartedly believe in and uphold these prophecies made by the Watchtower. They were certainly not expendable.

ARE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES FALSE PROPHETS?- Christ’s Return
You see, the prophecies themselves concerned important events holding significant implications. For example, the Watchtower initially proclaimed that Jesus’ second coming happened invisibly in the year 1874. Today, Jehovah’s Witnesses believed this event actually took place in the year 1914. It’s important to note that Paul issued very strong warnings about those setting false dates concerning Christ’s return (2 Thes. 2:1-3).

ARE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES FALSE PROPHETS?- Despair and Disillusionment
Fourth, the Watchtower’s false prophecies have produced nothing but despair and disillusionment, and have caused many Jehovah’s Witnesses to resort to drastic measures which they would not have taken otherwise. Numbers of Jehovah’s Witnesses, for instance, quit their jobs and liquidated their personal belongings as they anticipated the world to end in the year 1975. Needless to say, that prediction never materialized.Well, when all the facts are considered, it becomes readily apparent that Jehovah’s Witnesses are false prophets who fill people “with false hopes” (Jer. 23:16).

The Time is At Hand - 7 (Unfulfilled) Expectations

The Time Is at Hand (1889) pages 76 to 78 claimed seven things would happen in 1914. Not one of these eventuated. The following statements are extracted from that list;

1. "the disintegration of the rule of imperfect men. Firstly, That at that date the Kingdom of God, for which our Lord taught us to pray, saying, "Thy Kingdom come," will begin to assume control, and that it will then shortly be "set up," or firmly established, in the earth, on the ruins of present institutions."
2. He whose right it is thus to take the dominion will then be present as earth's new Ruler; and not only so, but it will also prove that he will be present for a considerable period before that date;
3. the last member of the divinely recognized Church of Christ, the "royal priesthood," "the body of Christ," will beglorified with the Head;
4. Jerusalem shall no longer be trodden down
5. Israel's blindness will begin to be turned away
6. the great "time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation," will reach its culmination in a world-wide reign of anarchy
7. It will prove that before that date God's Kingdom, organized in power, will be in the earth and then smite and crush the Gentile image (Dan. 2:34)-and fully consume the power of these kings." Studies In the Scriptures Series II - The Time Is at Hand (1889) pp.76-78

Studies in the Scriptures - Editions after 1914

Editions of Studies in the Scriptures written prior to 1914 were very specific about what would happen prior to and during 1914. These journals continued to be used after 1914. To overcome the obviously erroneous predictions, in 1915 they were reissued with amendments.

For example, prior to 1914, editions of Studies In the Scriptures - Thy Kingdom Come stated on p.228 that the resurrection would occur before 1914. From the 1915 edition onwards, this was changed to state that the resurrection was to occur soon after 1914.

End of the "Time of Trouble" (Great Tribulation)

Barbour and Russell published that the time of trouble would end in 1914, a teaching Russell continued to promote in Zion's Watch Tower.
