Nigerian Nnamdi Marcellus Mgbodile, living in Marietta, Georgia, United States has been arraigned on twenty counts of bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He was docked on November 19 before the U.S. Magistrate Judge Janet F. King. A federal grand jury indicted Mgbodile on November 6, 2019. Mgbodile was docked the same day that Air Peace chairman, Allen Onyema was also accused of money laundering and bank fraud by the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia. One of Mgbodile’s victims, a woman lost $6.5million to him via romance scam, while he failed to pull through a Business E-mail Compromise Scam of $350,000. “Online romance scams and business email compromise frauds have increasingly become the method of choice for transnational fraudsters targeting U.S. residents and companies,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak, who made the announcement of Mgbodile’s indictment and arraignment on Wednesday in Atlanta. “In this case, a single victim allegedly lost millions. This is a stark reminder that users of online dating websites should be aware of such scams and exercise extreme caution if asked for money by anyone online or over the phone.” “This investigation and subsequent indictment demonstrates the commitment the Secret Service and our partners have in aggressively pursuing those who commit online fraud scams,” said Malcolm D. Wiley, Sr., Acting Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Atlanta Field Office. “This case serves as a reminder to all, particularly during the holiday season, to ensure protocols related to cyber hygiene are observed.” According to U.S. Attorney Pak, the charges, and other information presented in court: Mgbodile was allegedly involved in two fraudulent schemes, a romance scam that defrauded a Virginia woman out of more than $6.5 million, and a business email compromise (“BEC”) scam in which Mgbodile and others attempted to defraud a Georgia company of nearly $350,000. The Umar Ganduje led Kano State Government has reportedly seized and demolished a property worth N250million belonging to the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II. On Wednesday, Daily Nigerian said its investigation with Kano Focus Newspapers revealed that the property, located at Ibrahim Dabo Road, was demolished to pave way for the ongoing flyover and underpass being constructed at the Dangi Roundabout area. The demolition of structures within the land and the fence was supervised by the Commissioner of Works, Engineer Muaz Magaji, on Friday, 15 November, 2019, days before the Kano High Court presided by Justice Usman Na’abba nullified the law that created new emirates and the emirs in Kano. On anonymity, some officials of the Ministry of Lands, disclosed that Emir Sanusi purchased the 1.2 hectare land in 2010 at the cost of N200million. They added that the land was recently valued N250million at commercial rate, but the state government insisted that payment would be made in accordance with the statutory land rate. Sanusi’s Chief of Staff, Munir Sanusi, declined comment. He explained that the monarch had not given him clearance to speak on the matter. In his reaction, the commissioner claimed that the Kano government had paid compensation to the emir. “I can tell you he got the alert. For eight months, this issue has stalled the project, and this project is for public interest. We were even hoping that the Emir would give us the land free to continue with the work”, Magaji said. “But since he did not give it to us, we decided to engage the service of valuers who valued it according to the statutory land rate because the government does not engage in commercial purchase”. The commissioner also confirmed that he personally mounted the Grade D9 bulldozer to pull down the said structures. But sources say statutory land rate the government paid Sanusi was a paltry N4million. Meanwhile, Malam Muazu Shuaibu, the Secretary-General of Islamic Foundation, an NGO which owns a portion of land hosting the shops affected by the bridge project, has accused the Kano government of snatching their land without due compensation. He explained that the shops were leased out to developers on a Build Operate and Transfer, BOT arrangement for a period of 20 years with the aim of generating funds to maintain the Umar Bin Khattab Mosque. Shuaibu said: “They sent valuers to make an assessment on what amount to give to each allotee. But we told them that they cannot proceed with the demolition until payments have been made to the beneficiaries. “So, they asked us to forward our account numbers but we said no, we cannot forward account numbers until they give the figures they would pay to each allotee. “After so much delay, the government officials later sent the figures which we share with our developers before finally submitting account numbers and the government officials asked us to wait for payment. “I contacted the developers to know if any of them had received an alert but all of them said they did not receive alerts. “In less than the 24 hours given, the commissioner came personally and started demolishing part of the shops and then asked thugs to take everything they want as booty, claiming that they had paid compensation”. Imo State Government says it has awarded over N40 billion contracts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of dilapidated roads in the state. The state Gov. Emeka Ihedioha made the disclosure at a media parley in Owerri on Monday. He said that 25 road contracts had been procured, with the first 19 already finished, while 15 per cent of the mobilisation fee had been paid to the contractors in a procurement he said went through the state Ministry of Works and the Bureau for Public Procurement. Ihedioha said that he had instructed that signboards for the projects, with names of the contractors and other information, be mounted for public consumption. He said that a Commission of Inquiry on Contract Review and Forceful Acquisition of Land by the immediate past administration in the state was instituted in response to petitions by aggrieved individuals. “I picked professionals without a single politician as members of the commission, and I asked them to do the needful without fear or favour. “I did not set up the committee to witch-hunt anybody,” he said. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2019/11/25/imo-to-spend-n40bn-on-road-rehabilitation-reconstruction/amp/

Uber will not be granted a new licence to operate in London, Transport for London (TfL) has said. The regulator said the taxi app was not "fit and proper" as a licence holder, despite having made a number of positive changes to its operations. Uber originally lost its licence in 2017 due to safety concerns, but was granted a 15-month extension. The firm says it will appeal against the decision and can continue to operate during that process. It had received an additional two-month extension in September which expired on Sunday. Uber has faced resistance from regulators and traditional taxi services in a range of countries after being dogged by controversy for a number of years. Helen Chapman, Director of Licensing, Regulation and Charging at TfL, said: "As the regulator of private hire services in London we are required to make a decision today on whether Uber is fit and proper to hold a licence. Safety is our absolute top priority. "While we recognise Uber has made improvements, it is unacceptable that Uber has allowed passengers to get into minicabs with drivers who are potentially unlicensed and uninsured." A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced a former Manager of Diamond Bank Plc (now Access Bank), Chinyere Oti and a former Account Officer of the same bank, Odigboh Okechukwu, to two years imprisonment for defrauding the bank to the tune of N25million. Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyami- Lamikanra gave the sentence after a 10- year-long trial. The convicts were first arraigned on November 19, 2009, by the Port Harcourt Zonal Office of the EFCC on a seven-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing. The charges were amended on April 25, 2019. Count four reads: ” Odigboh Okechukwu and Chinyere Oti on or about the 23rd day of October, 2008 at Diamond Bank Plc Port Harcourt within the Port Harcourt Judicial Division did fraudulently steal the sum of Twenty Million Four Hundred And Thirty One Thousand Three Hundred And Forty Two Naira Five Kobo ( N20, 431, 342.05) property of Diamond Bank Plc by means of Diamond Bank Cheque No. 16216303 through an unfunded account in the name of Achufa Investment Limited operated by Odigboh Okechukwu and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 381(1) and punishable under Section 390( 9) of the Criminal Code CAP 37 Vol. II Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999″. Delivering his judgment, Justice Iyayi- Lamikanra found the two defendants guilty of the charges and sentenced them to two years imprisonment each or an option of fine of One Million Naira only) each. She also ordered the convicts to pay a sum of Twenty Five Million Naira as restitution to Diamond Access Bank Plc. Trouble came for the two convicts when the former Diamond Bank Plc petitioned the EFCC, alleging that its Manager, Rumukwrushi Branch, Port Harcourt, Chinyere Oti, fraudulently opened a Current Account for one of its customers and used the account to make fraudulent withdrawals and overdrew it to the tune of Twenty Five Million Eighteen Thousand and Four Hundred and Sixty-Seven Naira. Investigations showed that the alleged customer of the bank never opened an account with the bank, rather, Odigboh Okechukwu, an Account Officer with the bank used the customer’s photograph to open the account without the customer’s knowledge or consent. Two women who are missing limbs have become best friends through their comparable hardship. Jlissa Austin, 31, who was born without arms, knees and with only seven toes, met Chassidy Young, 32, who lives with Tetra-Amelia syndrome, after learning each other's life story through a documentary. Tetra-Amelia syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that has left Chassidy without hands and very short legs They have since become best friends through their very rare similarities. The pair decided to meet in person for and Chassidy travelled across Texas, in the US, from her home in Dallas, to Jlissa, who lives in Houston. Chassidy said: "I saw Jlissa’s story and I got so emotional. "I was like, I can’t be the only person on this whole earth missing arms. Where they at?! "And then Jlissa confirmed there’s actually somebody out there who shares the same experience as me. "I was just like, I have to find her. "When you don’t see people like you, it feels like you’re the only person in the world that’s like that. "Everybody needs an identity. I’m so happy to have met Jlissa because I now have somebody to identify with. "You know, we have our family and we have our friends. But it’s those moments where you need somebody like you because we have our own struggles that they could never relate to.” Some 30 years ago, doctors predicted Jlissa would never be able to lead a normal life and, to this day, she is still unsure of what caused her abnormalities. But Jlissa has certainly proved her doubters wrong – learning to use her feet when conducting everyday tasks like brushing her teeth and texting on her phone. She said: "Most of the questions I get are basically, 'How do you eat?', 'how do you write?', 'who takes you to the restroom?', 'who puts your make-up on?'. "My condition hasn’t affected anything in my life. "There are so many people that aren’t able to be themselves because they are scared of the world. "You need to be yourself and be thankful. That’s what me and Chassidy are doing now." Chassidy can also use her feet to perform activities that she would otherwise struggle with. They have been on the receiving end of lots of staring and pointing in public spaces, but they’ve quickly learnt to ignore their haters and stay positive with the people closest to them. Chassidy said: “I prefer it for kids to come up and say to me, 'Hey lady, what’s up, where’s your hands at, why are you so little like me?' "And then we can have a conversation. I always try not to be offended. "I don’t call it disability, because that makes it sound like something is restricting you from doing something else. It restricts you from getting from A to B. "But I’ve made it. A, B, C, D. E, F, G – you name it." Jlissa and Chassidy have racked up thousands of followers on their social profiles. On a day that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state is savouring his appeal court victory against his PDP challenger, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) has chosen to play killjoy, slamming him with a 21-day strike notice. The doctors want him to implement agreements it reached with the association two years ago. The President of the association, Dr Emmanuel Joseph said at a press briefing on Thursday in Kaduna that the strike notice was issued on Nov. 6. He said that the medical doctors would resume their suspended strike if after the ultimatum the government failed to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it signed with the association. “The MOU set out mutually agreed roadmap with timeline towards resolving the issues and provided the basis for suspension of the strike action two years ago,” he said. Joseph noted that since the agreement, the ARD has patiently and painstakingly continued to engage the government for the implementation of the agreed terms. He however said the association was “rudely shocked by the content of the establishment circular of the 27th Sept 2019, which is in breach to our MOU and indeed short changes Doctors in salaries and allowances to the tune 26-49 per cent across grades and steps.” According to the ARD president, the Kaduna state government has only “partially” attended to only two out of eight issues contained in the MOU after two years of the agreement. “It is our earnest hope that the 21 days given will provide ample time for the government to rectify the anomalies in the new circular, to keep with the terms of our MOU and to meet up with other mutually terms of the MOU,” Joseph said.
