Politics / Obasanjo Hosts Jonathan, 4 Northern Governors by jonex70(m): 8:30pm On Jul 20, 2013
Abiodun Onafuye/ Abeokuta
Nigeria’s former leader, Olusegun Obasanjo hosted, separately President Goodluck Jonathan and four northern governors at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital today.
Although Jonathan described his meeting with Obasanjo as a ‘son visiting his father’, political observers believed the meeting was to forge some reconciliation in the PDP, as Obasanjo also met minutes later, the four northern governors who have vowed never to back Jonathan’s second term ambition in 2015.

All the meetings were held behind closed doors.Obasnjo’s meeting with the governors lasted for an hour, while Jonathan spent two hours with him.
The four governors are Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Sule Lamido of Jigawa,Attahiru Bafawara of Sokoto and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State.
Nyako on behalf of others also repeated Jonathan’s line, that they had come to “greet Obasnjo as a father and leader in the party.
According to Nyako:”we have come to met with the most accomplished Nigerian ever on a very important matter”.
All the governors left Obasanjo’s home is being called at exactly 2:50pm.
After another visit to the home of Reuben Abati, the Presidential adviser on media, whose mother was buried Friday, President Jonathan debunked speculations that he was fighting with Obasanjo.
Obasanjo, Jonathan said, is his father.
President Jonathan arrived the Asero Estate of Abati at exactly 1:37pm.

“Here I am in Abeokuta to commiserate with my brother,Abati. He is a family member because all of us are family at the State House.I was supposed to be here yesterday but I was away in Togo and most of the Senior staff that were supposed to be there with him were with me.So I think it is normal for me to come and greet him today.
And on what he discussed with Obasanjo, he replied: “You should know
that I must branch at his house when I am in Abeokuta. Obasanjo is my
father and I am his son.If I enter Abeokuta and fail to check on Baba
at his residence, you people will be thinking that there is a fight
between us and there is nothing like that.”
The President was accompanied by the Minister of Health, some serving Senators and other personalities.
Abeokuta was locked down by security personnel as long as the two visits lasted

Romance / Man Calls Solihull Police To Complain About Prostitute's Looks by jonex70(m): 11:20am On Jun 14, 2013
A man has been warned after he dialled 999 to complain about a prostitute's looks after meeting her.

West Midlands Police said they were contacted by the caller who said he "wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act".

The force said the call was received at about 19:30 BST on Tuesday complaining that the woman was not as attractive as she had claimed.

Officers have now sent the man a letter warning him about wasting police time.

West Midlands Police said the man had claimed he met the woman in a hotel car park.

"The caller claimed that the woman had made out she was better looking than she actually was and he wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act," a spokesperson for the force said.

"When he raised this issue with the woman concerned, she allegedly took his car keys, ran away from the car and threw them back at him, prompting him to call police."

'It was unbelievable'
During the call, the man can be heard to say: "I've arranged a meeting with her, but beforehand I've asked her for an honest description, otherwise when I get there I'm not going to use her services.

"Basically she has misdescribed herself, misrepresented herself totally.

"She was angry because she obviously thinks I owe her a living or something."

Sgt Jerome Moran, based at Solihull police station, called the man back to offer some advice.

He said: "It was unbelievable - he genuinely believed he had done nothing wrong and that the woman should have been investigated by police for misrepresentation.

"I told him that she'd not committed any offences and that it was his actions, in soliciting for sex, that were in fact illegal."

Despite the man refusing to give his details, police were able to identify him and have sent him a letter warning him about his actions.

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 gives consumers legal rights, stipulating goods which are sold must be of satisfactory quality, be fit for purpose and must match the seller's description.

Nigeria under attack

Tough battle ahead

Fear in Maiduguri
At least 30 militants have been killed during air raids on their training camps in north-eastern Nigeria, officials say.

An army spokesman said jets and helicopter gunships had been used to attack several camps.

He told the BBC that a plane had been hit by anti-aircraft fire but had managed to return to base.

States of emergency were declared this week in three north-eastern states hit by Boko Haram's Islamist insurgency.

Nigerian forces are trying to regain control in the states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.

Meanwhile, explosions and gunfire have been heard overnight in Katsina state.

Residents have told the BBC's Hausa service that banks, police stations and prisons were destroyed in the town of Daura, near the border with Niger.

They said they had seen the bodies of five members of the security forces and three militants, but there has been no official confirmation of casualties.

Mobile phone networks were not functioning in many parts of north-east Nigeria on Thursday.

A security official told the AP news agency that the mobile phone service had been shut down during the military operation.

Militants have previously attacked mobile phone masts in the area in an effort to disrupt communications.

Residents staying inside
Some of the camps hit by air raids were in the Sambisa Game Reserve, about 70km (45 miles) south of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, where the militants first emerged in 2009, said Nigerian military spokesman Brig Gen Chris Olukolade.

Boko Haram: From preachers to slave raiders
He told the BBC that 30 militants had been killed since the latest offensive began on Wednesday.

There is no independent confirmation of the number of deaths.

The aim is to "destroy [Boko Haram] bases, apprehend as many of them as possible and bring them to justice", Brig Gen Olukolade said.

"It is not just Sambisa, every camp is under attack," the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

In January, the military said it had deployed helicopter gunships to destroy Boko Haram camps in the reserve, not far from Bama, where 55 people were killed in militant attacks last week.

Brig Gen Olukolade said the plane damaged by anti-aircraft fire had returned to base safely, while the "terrorist base" was subsequently "completely destroyed".

This is the first time Boko Haram has been reported to have used such heavy weaponry against aircraft.

A Maiduguri resident told the BBC that the city was unusually quiet on Friday, with most people staying inside.

Brig Gen Olukolade said "several thousand" troops had been sent to the three north-eastern states to tackle Boko Haram.

The three semi-desert states, which border Niger, Chad and Cameroon, are roughly the size of England or the US state of Illinois but have a population of just 10 million.

The BBC's Will Ross in Abuja says targeting Boko Haram's rural bases or training camps should pose no great challenge for the military; the hardest part of this campaign will be in urban areas like Maiduguri, where the militants are living among the civilian population.

The president said the army would take "all necessary action" to "put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists", saying they had taken down the Nigerian flag and replaced it with a foreign emblem in some parts of the country.

Human rights organisations have criticised some of the Nigerian military's previous operations because of the resulting civilian casualties.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state in the north.

Although they often attack Christians and government targets, they have also killed many Muslim civilians.

Sports / TB Joshua: Eagles Will Win On Sunday by jonex70(m): 2:57pm On Feb 08, 2013
The General Overseer of The Synagogue Church Of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, says Nigeria’s Super Eagles would defeat Burkina Faso in Sunday’s final of the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

T.B. Joshua, who warned Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi to avoid conceding a late minute goal in their AFCON Group C opener against the Burkinabe, told P.M.NEWS that Nigeria’s case in the Nations Cup final this year is like the biblical Jacob who wrestled with God, saying that “on Sunday we’ll tell God unless He gives us our heart’s desire we’ll not let Him go.

“The cloud is darker over Nigeria’s Super Eagles, but with God we’ll scale through. If it were not to be the final, anything could have happened. The first match we played with Burkina Faso, it was just by the grace of God that it ended in a draw.

“On Sunday, our opponents will play defensively because they will be looking out for penalty shootout at the end of the game. They will also play through three of their strikers upfront; one of them very tall and huge player and two others.

“What I’m seeing I don’t want to say it because it would be too frightening, but I want to assure that we’ll scale through the challenge on Sunday.”

The prophet who established a football club, My People FC to groom young players, however, warned the Eagles not to allow Burkina Faso to score first in the final, saying that “if this happened the Burkinabe would fall back to defend the goal, which will be very dangerous for our team. I still repeat that no matter the situation, we’ll scale through.

“The Burkina Faso that we played in the group stage will not be the same team we’ll play on Sunday, even though some of their players are out of the squad due to injuries. They are still a team. But I hope for celebration.”

Joshua said as the giant of Africa, Nigeria last won the Nations Cup 13 years ago, which was too long ago for a great football nation like Nigeria.

“I think God should give us this cup to make the youths of this country happy. Winning this cup at this time of religious intolerance and violence will calm down the youths. I want to appeal to all Nigerians to pray for Eagles’ victory. I would have told you the scoreline but I would rather delay it till Sunday morning in order not psychologically distract the players and their coaches and not to demoralise the losing team.”

Prophet Joshua concluded that he would not want Keshi and his team to come to his church to celebrate their victory after the match because he is not the only one praying for the Eagles to win.

“My voice may be the one louder among the men of God in the country but this doesn’t mean that the team should come to my church to celebrate. I would rather prefer that they celebrate their victory with all Nigerians,” he said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A cat carrying a saw and a mobile phone was "detained" as it entered a prison gate in northeast Brazil, Brazilian media reported on Saturday.

Prison guards were surprised when they saw a white cat crossing the main gate of the prison, its body wrapped with tape. A closer look showed the feline also carried drills, an earphone, a memory card, batteries and a phone charger.

All 263 detainees in the prison of Arapiraca, a city of 215,000 people in the state of Alagoas, are considered suspect in the plot, which is being investigated by local police.

"It's tough to find out who's responsible for the action as the cat doesn't speak," a prison spokesperson told local paper Estado de S.Paulo.

The cat was taken to an animal disease center to receive medical care.

The incident took place on New Year's day but was first reported by national media on Saturday.
