Talk about the country with the most poor people in the world? Nigeria rings in my mind
obaaderemi:
The number is higher than that actually and some of the guys here are actually starving. When the world thinks about poverty and hunger in africa, they have the image of skeletal Kenyans burnt in their minds. Kenya today is what Ethiopia and Sudan were in the 80s. The shame of a continent.

This one is a bit rich coming from a fella living in a country that has one of the worst literacy levels in Africa. Your education budget is meagre given the population you folks have!
obaaderemi:
The bolded portrays your half baked education. For the fact that none of your Kenyan brothers has not corrected your error shows the generally pathetic level of basic education in Little India. grin

Fact is that Kenya was the first country to have a refinery when you pit it against Nigeria. Your refinery itself is still a work in progress!
obaaderemi:
Those other non mineral industries have been struggling due to the vagaries of the weather. That's why Kenyans have become starvelings. They have been praying for oil for years. But even at that their oil industry is almost non viable. It is too small to fund or attract the construction of a refinery. You know Kenya does not have a refinery. grin

It won't as long as this country exist. It's like thinking that SA will do away with their airline because they report losses too. Profits of us owning an airline is more than just monetary!
obaaderemi:
The only thing keeping that nonsense airways in the sky is pride.Very soon the debt would be too heavy for even the so called pride to bear. grin

Ordinary Kenyans can invest as little as 30 dollars to buy T-Bills (Treasury bills) recouping a 10 percent interest in the process.

Treasury bills should be the safest way one can invest as the returns are guaranteed. It's only in Kenya that you can buy government bonds through your mobile phone. In Kenya,we've set the bar high. If you've got idle money, and you are looking for an almost risk free investment,go for treasury bills !

NIGERIA going bankrupt again.

Africa’s largest oil producer could run out of money if it doesn’t boost revenues urgently

Fiscal revenues in Africa’s most-populous nation undershot targets by at least 45% a year since 2015, according to the budget office. Expenditure has doubled to more than 7 trillion naira ($19 billion).

The government’s income shortfall was 51.9% in May due to lower oil and non-oil inflows, according to the central bank.

Total debt was at $81.2 billion at the end of March, from about $65 billion in 2015.

Debt service costs consume more than half of actual revenues, leaving little to build badly needed infrastructure and grow the economy. Nigeria spent 2.2 trillion naira on servicing outstanding loans in 2018 compared to 1.68 trillion naira on infrastructure, according to the central bank.

Without major revenue reforms, debt could rise to almost 36% of GDP by 2024 and interest payments could make up 74.6% of revenue, according to the International Monetary Fund.

“Nigeria’s government expenditure is roughly the same as Kenya’s, despite a population that is nearly three times as big,” she said.

Should be 4 times - not 3 times.

In terms of debt management, we are not doing bad. What we need to focus on is growing our exports revenues and insuring that we get the maximum benefits for our taxes.

Reading a world bank report, it's a bit disappointing finding out that we spend the same as Czech Republic and Bulgaria on per capita spending on education whist this countries trounce Kenya on the sector's primary and secondary completion rate. We are better off than many in Africa but we deserve the best! This economy needs a Kibaki moment. Not that he was perfect, but he wouldn't entertain some of the mediocrity that we currently see, remember his common phrase 'Ha-pa-naa.... hio hatutakubali'

I'm afraid that Uhuru needs to do more!

US Presidential Aspirant Grabs Headlines With Kenyan Belt

In an apparent boost for Kenyan-made products, American Billionaire and candidate for the 2020 US Democratic presidential primaries, Thomas Steyer, has specifically recognized and appreciated Kenyan female artisans for their work.

During one of his recent campaign videos, he wore a Kenyan-made belt, which elicited a lot of reactions with many questioning the origin and asking why he chose such unique wear.

He claimed that he bought the belt during one of his travels to the country, and it was sold to him by a woman artisan.

According to Forbes, Steyer's net worth is $1.6 billion, with his company Farallon Capital growing it into one of the most profitable hedge funds in America.

Even though he has been on the sidelines for a very long time, Steyer is well known in the American political circles, having worked with President Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry amongst others.

He is also the chairman of one of the biggest has deep business connections with business magnates like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. He is a big enthusiast for the environment and philanthropy.

In August 2010, Steyer and his wife signed onto The Giving Pledge, an initiative of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. The pledge urges individuals and families to give at least half their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetime.

Steyer has been compared and contrasted with the Koch brothers, billionaire businessmen who engage in extensive political activity, and has been viewed as a Koch adversary, although Steyer's total reported net worth is but a small fraction of that of the Koch brothers or other billionaire political activists, donors, and fundraisers (such as Michael Bloomberg and George Soros).

Steyer's 2020 presidential campaign began on July 9, 2019, when he stated that he would be running in the Democratic primaries in an online campaign video posted to Twitter.

Intermarrying was the strategy of Emperor Menelik. He intermarried Oromos and Amharas of the Shewa. Being Shewa Amhara means being Oromo partially. My dad is shewa Oromo. He speaks fluent Oromiffa but he is still Amhara respectful of the Oromo culture and vice versa.

Jubaland is strategic to us. It is where Al Shabab attack us from. We need a president who will safeguard our own interests. These aren't Uhuru's decision, the NIS works in the best interests of this country. It's like our CIA.Madobe ticks it for us in Jubaland. Moi knew how to use our intelligence well, no wonder he stayed in power for almost 20 years plus. I'm not so sure about Uhuru.
TayserMahri:
Dilemma is when you are trying to safeguard peace in your own country by splitting another one. How the situation is unfolding now is not necessarily in our best interests because we are literally rigging in Madobe by shielding him from competition. The Ethiopians too need to stop micromanaging Somalia.

The Oromos will be Ethiopia's biggest problem. I just like the way we have assimilated our Kenyan Somalis. We now need to dilute them by intermarrying with them. Where is Team Mafisi when you need them most?

We are against Djibouti on vying for the UNSC sit. Ethiopia's Abiy is opening up relationship with her former enemy Eritrea . Ethiopia are not on the idea of Jubaland. Somali took us to court. Abiy being a Cushite with close Somali blood fancies a more strong and prosperous Cushitic dominance at the horn of Africa. The guy knows full well that he doesn't enjoy much support from the other major tribal divide in Ethiopia. His government has survived some coup attempts. He needs the other Somali related Cushitic countries and home Cushite support to solidify himself. I don't think he's pro-Kenya.We would do well with a Tigray or an Amhara at the helm in Ethiopia.
mtisTheQubit:
there is no government is somali..just weasels scamming their citizens..ths guys are part of the problem..they just want status quo
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by Jonraid(m): 1:25pm On Aug 20, 2019
Ethiopia's Abiy is more pro-oromo. I like the guy but he's somehow becoming a threat to our geopolitics. He is against Madoobe who is an Ogaden. Our intelligence marries well with the Ogaden republic. Let's see how our ally Ethiopia will approach this. They should leave project Jubaland alone, it was Kenya's idea. A strong Jubaland means a peaceful Kenya.

When the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement comes into full force, imported goods to Nigeria may jump by 251 per cent within 15 years.

This, according to a research conducted by the Centre for Trade and Development Initiatives, University of Ibadan, is for goods currently attracting 20 per cent import duty.

Findings of the study showed that Nigeria had the least import penetration in Africa from African countries.

https://punchng.com/afcfta-may-increase-nigerias-imports-by-251-report/

68816419:
Kenya’s Regional Imports Surpasses Exports, Raising An Alarm On Country’s Productivity

Kenya’s regional imports have surpassed exports in what can be attributed to the production of similar products on the continent that raises competition with Kenya’s products.

This comes at a time when the country is struggling with a trade deficit (the gap between imports and export), specifically, for the 20 year period between 1998 – 2018 when the exports grew average 8.4 percent per year while imports grew average 11.5 percent per year.

The total exports in the first five months in 2019 dropped 1.96 percent to Sh107.55 bn compared with a year ago. The trade deficit was signaled by a drop in exports to key markets like Uganda, Tanzania, and D.R Congo

For instance, exports from Kampala fell to Sh30.77 bn from Sh34.51 bn in 2013 while imports from Uganda doubled to Sh13.95 bn from Sh5.14 bn in 2014, data by Central Bank of Kenya indicated.

Tanzania’s grew to Sh12.95 bn from Sh8.34 bn at a time when the country entered into a deal with Kenya to sell one million tons of maize and flour within one year to curb the maize shortage crisis experienced in Kenya grin

Meanwhile, half-year exports to Tanzania reduced to Sh15.79 bn this year from Sh21.73 bn five years ago.

According to Charles Ogutu, a research analyst at Genghis Capital Limited Research, the trade deficit affects job creation in a negative way.

By relying on imports, we have outsourced jobs to our trading partners, more so the Far East Region which account for a significant aspect of the origins of our imports. This will dent the manufacturing jobs as targeted under the Big Four Agenda,” he told WeeMedia.

The trade deficit comes in the wake of decreased exports of the country’s key commodities like tea whose exports value fell Sh10 bn in the first quarter of the year.

In a bid to increase local production, the Treasury proposed policies that are geared towards reigniting the manufacturing sector’s growth and development.

For instance, the reduction of Import Development Fee (IDF) on raw materials to 1.5 from 2.0 percent, and the increase in IDF on finished goods from 2 percent to 3.5.

“This is expected to reduce the cost of imported raw materials, thus improving the competitiveness of local manufacturers against finished imports,” Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) CEO Phyllis Wakiaga said.

In the 2019/2020 budget statement, the Treasury also proposed the increment of Railway Development Levy (RDL) for finished products from 1.5 percent to 2 percent which is expected to cushion manufacturers against imported finished goods.
