Kenya's Railway is Earthquake Proof. Can sustain an 8 Richter scale Earthquake! Contractors have allayed fears earth tremors can destroy the standard gauge railway line. China Communications Construction Company, the contractor working of the Nairobi-Naivasha line, said on Tuesday they have implemented new technology to ensure the lines are safe from earthquakes. CCCC's spokesman Steve Zhao said many geologists were involved in the installation of the technology. He spoke to reporters in Naivasha. There were fears the line could be damaged following tremors that shook several counties on Sunday. On Monday, the Kenya National Highways Authority said a fault line on a critical bridge along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway could be as a result of the tremors. But CCCC said the SGR line is safe. Zhao said all elements in the station buildings, such as walls and the roof, had been tied together like a giant nest. “This will act as an integrated unit during earthquake shaking, transferring forces across connections and preventing separation,” Zhao said. Zhao said other earthquake resistant measures incorporated in the line include building the railway track on a wider sub-grade - the foundation the track is built on. “The sub-grade and slope in the SGR Phase 2A are relatively higher and wider in comparison to Phase 1 from Mombasa to Nairobi,” he said. He said the contractor had determined the safest seismic fortification to be implemented for the line to meet an earthquake resistance intensity of 8, in the area between Embulbul – Ngong and Duka Moja – Narok. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJcbRjqlfic |

The 7th most powerful passport in Africa is Kenya's one! We can do better though! The Kenyan passport is the seventh most powerful in Africa with its citizens able to visit 72 out of 104 countries without a visa. Kenya, which ties with Swaziland in the continent, falls behind Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho in that order in the report by Henley Passport Index. Globally, Kenya and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) emerged joint 69th with Seychelles top in Africa and 28th in the world, Mauritius 31 worldwide, South Africa 51, Botswana 60 and Namibia 66 and Lesotho 67.

The usual suspects are yet to sign,we all know them! They will tell you that they are Pro-Africa and Pan-Africans yet they aren't! Ethiopia last week ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), leaving only one more ratification for it to take effect. Twenty-two ratifications are required for the agreement to enter into force and so far 21 countries have ratified their instruments. Since the March 2018 AU Summit in Kigali when the continental pact was launched and signed by 44 states, eight more — South Africa, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Burundi, Namibia, Guinea Bissau, Botswana and Zambia — have signed. Only Eritrea, Benin, Nigeria and Tanzania remain. To date, 15 countries — Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Niger, Chad, Congo Republic, Djibouti, Guinea, eSwatini, Mali, Mauritania, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire — have deposited their instruments of AfCFTA ratification with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Sierra Leone, Senegal, Togo, Egypt and Zimbabwe have received parliamentary approvals for ratification. According to Stephen Karingi, director of the Regional Integration and Trade Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the remaining items for discussion on the AfCFTA are competition, provisions for investment, intellectual property and e-commerce. So far the protocols on goods, services and dispute settlement have been completed and their annexes will be ready by July. “The second phase of negotiations on the remaining clauses will begin soon,” We expect that the discussions will be concluded early 2021,” said Dr Karingi.

World's best teacher is from Kenya, the teacher bagged a cool one million dollars as prize money! A maths and physics teacher from a secondary school in a remote village in Kenya's Rift Valley has won the Sh100 million Global Teacher Prize for 2019, organisers have said. Peter Tabichi, who organisers say gives away 80 percent of his monthly income to the poor, received the prize at a ceremony Saturday in Dubai hosted by Hollywood star Hugh Jackman. "Every day in Africa we turn a new page and a new chapter... This prize does not recognise me but recognises this great continent's young people. I am only here because of what my students have achieved," Tabichi said. "This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything," he added after beating nine finalists from around the world to claim the award. The Dubai-based Varkey Foundation, which organises the event and handed out the prize for the fifth time, praised Tabichi's "dedication, hard work and passionate belief in his students' talent". All this combined, it said in a statement, "has led his poorly-resource school in remote rural Kenya to emerge victorious after taking on the country's best schools in national science competitions". Tabichi, 36, teaches at the Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani village, in a remote, semi-arid part of Kenya's Rift Valley.
