Speaking during a presentation of dedicated laptops to Directors and of Heads of Departments and Units during the 17th ITF Management Retreat at Lakowe Golf Resort in Lekki, Lagos, Director-General Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to leveraging digital technologies to streamline internal processes. A statement signed by Thomas Ngor , the Head, Press and Public Affairs of the funds and made available to newmen jn Jos reads that Dr. Ogun said the presentation marked a significant step toward automating communication within the ITF. In his words “In our pursuit of excellence, we are adopting digital tools to enhance efficiency and reduce reliance on paper-based processes,”. He announced that internal and inter-departmental memos, as well as official correspondence, will now be transmitted electronically, fostering a smarter, more sustainable management culture. This shift is expected to improve response times, ensure accurate documentation, and enhance interdepartmental collaboration. “This is a bold step toward building a modern, forward-thinking institution ready to meet the demands of a dynamic global economy,” Dr. Ogun added. The Director-General emphasized that digital communication aligns with ITF’s broader strategy to automate systems and processes in accordance with global best practices. Politics › Bayo Ojulari, The Gold Standard In Our Oil And Gas Industry- Dangana Usman by Josepholome(op): 2:02pm On Aug 01, 2025 |
*Bayo Ojulari, the gold standard in our oil and gas industry, is the right choice for Nigeria’s energy future*As an energy expert and public affairs analyst with over a decade of immersion in Africa’s oil and gas sector, I have witnessed the ebb and flow of leadership in national oil companies across the continent. Few figures, however, embody the pinnacle of expertise, integrity, and visionary stewardship as profoundly as Bashir Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In an era where the global energy landscape is fraught with volatility, from geopolitical tensions disrupting supply chains to the inexorable shift toward sustainable energy, Ojulari stands as the gold standard in the exploration and management of oil economies. His appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2025 marks not just a change in leadership but a strategic masterstroke that positions Nigeria to reclaim its stature as a formidable player in the global hydrocarbons arena.
Ojulari’s transition from the private sector, where he was a towering figure in multinational oil giants and indigenous energy firms, to public service exemplifies a rare breed of patriotism. In the cutthroat world of international energy conglomerates, Ojulari had carved out a legacy of success, amassing wealth, influence, and respect on a global scale. Yet, he chose to heed the call of national duty, stepping into the helm of NNPCL, an institution long plagued by inefficiencies, corruption scandals, and operational bottlenecks.
This decision underscores a profound sense of responsibility toward Nigeria’s economic sovereignty. The nation is indeed privileged to have a leader of Ojulari’s caliber: a man whose qualifications are unimpeachable, whose experience spans continents, and whose reputation in the oil industry commands universal respect.
In a sector where technical prowess must marry strategic acumen, Ojulari represents the archetype of excellence, drawing from a reservoir of knowledge that few can rival.
Reworking the narrative of his illustrious career reveals a trajectory marked by relentless innovation and transformative impact. A seasoned engineer whose professional odyssey spans more than three decades, Ojulari assumed the role of GCEO at NNPCL with a depth of expertise that promises to redefine Nigeria’s petroleum landscape.
Graduating from Ahmadu Bello University with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering, he commenced his journey at Elf Petroleum Nigeria as a Fields & Process Engineer, laying the foundational stones of his mastery in upstream operations. His subsequent 24-year tenure at Shell propelled him through leadership positions across Nigeria, Europe, and the Middle East, where he honed skills in petroleum process engineering, strategic planning, and field development, experiences that have equipped him to navigate the complexities of global energy markets with unparalleled finesse.
With over 34 years in the global oil and gas industry, Ojulari emerges as a business leader par excellence, his portfolio encompassing the management of petroleum asset acquisitions and divestments, exploration, field development, production management, strategic planning, economics, investment evaluation, and commercial negotiations.
A pinnacle of his career was his stewardship as Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) from 2015 to 2021. In this capacity, he oversaw deep-water assets boasting a production capacity of 320,000 barrels per day and an annual operating budget exceeding $1 billion.
Under his guidance, SNEPCo achieved extraordinary feats: a 20 per cent surge in production, a 30 per cent slash in operational costs, and a 40 per cent reduction in capital project expenditures. His prowess in negotiating intricate commercial agreements was pivotal in securing new production-sharing contracts and resolving disputes for Oil Mining Lease OML-118, paving the way for growth initiatives valued at $6–8 billion.
Further burnishing his credentials, Ojulari’s engagements with entities such as ND Western Limited, Trewan Energy Limited, and Renaissance Africa Energy Company have cemented his status as a strategic thinker and adept problem-solver. At Renaissance, as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, he spearheaded a consortium’s $2.4 billion acquisition of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), demonstrating his acumen in high-stakes deals that bolster indigenous participation in the sector.
If President Tinubu’s mission was akin to finding a needle in a haystack, seeking a leader capable of overhauling a behemoth like NNPCL amid fiscal pressures and energy transition imperatives, he unequivocally hit a home run with Ojulari’s appointment. This choice reflects Tinubu’s commitment to competence, a principle that has defined his administration’s approach to governance.
Since assuming office in April 2025, Ojulari has wasted no time in imprinting his vision on NNPCL, ushering in a suite of achievements and reforms that augur well for the company’s future.
In his first 100 days alone, he has fortified collaborations with upstream partners, catalysed growth in oil and gas production, and advanced critical infrastructure projects like the successful Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline’s River Niger Crossing, a milestone that enhances Nigeria’s gas transportation capacity and supports industrialisation.
Strategic reviews of refinery operations have led to a notable reduction in petrol prices to N910 per litre in Abuja, alleviating consumer burdens amid economic headwinds. Moreover, Ojulari has reaffirmed NNPCL’s commitment to retaining and rehabilitating key assets like the Port Harcourt Refinery, ruling out privatisation and emphasising operational efficiency over short-term divestments.
His reform agenda is multifaceted and intellectually rigorous, drawing on economic theories of resource optimisation and institutional economics to address entrenched inefficiencies. Key initiatives include resuming monthly financial and operational reports after a nearly three-year hiatus, championing transparency and accountability in line with global best practices such as those espoused by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
Ojulari is aggressively pursuing investment inflows, targeting $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030, while aiming to elevate oil production beyond 2 million barrels per day (mbpd) by 2027 and 3 mbpd by 2030. Gas production is slated to reach 10 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) by 2027 and 12 bcf/d by 2030, unlocking potential in power generation, petrochemicals, and exports.
These reforms are underpinned by robust revenue assurance mechanisms, clean energy transitions, and job creation strategies that could generate millions of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Under his stewardship, NNPCL is poised to evolve into a world-class, profit-oriented entity, contributing substantially to Nigeria’s GDP growth and energy security.
Yet, amid these promising developments, I must express profound disappointment with reports I encountered online regarding high-ranking management officers allegedly attempting to sabotage Ojulari’s plans and efforts.
These accounts depict a coordinated campaign of misinformation and internal resistance aimed at derailing the GCEO’s reform agenda, ostensibly driven by vested interests resistant to change. Such actions are not only counterproductive but antithetical to the principles of corporate governance and national interest.
I unequivocally condemn these attempts by forces within the management spearheading this onslaught against the GCEO and the company at large. NNPCL, as Nigeria’s flagship energy institution, requires collaboration among staff at all levels. From junior engineers to executive suites, it fulfils its organisational goals and objectives.
Internal discord undermines collective efficacy, eroding trust and efficiency in a sector where precision and unity are paramount. As the adage goes, nobody wins when the family feuds; infighting only perpetuates the very inefficiencies that have historically hampered NNPCL’s performance. Instead, all stakeholders must align to deliver on President Tinubu’s mandate and meet the expectations of the Nigerian people, who yearn for tangible reforms in the oil sector, lower fuel prices, increased production, and equitable revenue distribution.
The energy currently squandered in combating a leader who has exceptionally positioned NNPCL for greatness should be redirected toward bolstering his initiatives. Ojulari’s reforms, ranging from transparency enhancements to ambitious production targets, are intellectually grounded in sustainable development models, such as those integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria with economic imperatives.
Distractions from forces intent on derailing his agenda risk stalling progress at a critical juncture when global investors scrutinise Nigeria’s commitment to reform. For instance, the push for clean energy and gas infrastructure not only mitigates climate risks but also diversifies revenue streams, reducing vulnerability to oil price fluctuations.
Allowing sabotage to prevail would perpetuate a vicious cycle of underperformance, depriving Nigeria of the economic multipliers these reforms promise: enhanced fiscal revenues, technological transfers, and socio-economic upliftment.
These reforms must not be derailed; distractions could exacerbate Nigeria’s energy poverty, hindering the transition to a low-carbon economy while forfeiting opportunities in emerging markets like liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
I therefore call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene decisively, calling those distracting the GCEO to order. The world recognises Tinubu’s emphasis on competence as the cornerstone of his appointments, a philosophy vividly illustrated in selecting Ojulari. Decision rooted in meritocracy over patronage. By quelling internal dissent, the President can safeguard the integrity of his administration’s energy policy.
In conclusion, if the overarching goal is to realise President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the oil and gas industry, encompassing prosperity, energy security, and sustainable development, then everyone at NNPCL must close ranks.
Internal sabotage, bickering, and senseless media wars against the GCEO serve no purpose but self-defeat. United under Ojulari’s visionary leadership, NNPCL can transcend its past challenges, emerging as a catalyst for Nigeria’s renaissance in the global energy order. The time for cooperation is now; the nation’s future depends on it.

Business › 5 Critical Healthcare Issues SG Holdings Foundation Is Tackling In Nigeria by Josepholome(op): 7:59am On Jul 21, 2025*. Modified: 9:04am On Jul 21, 2025 |
5 Critical Healthcare Issues SG Holdings Foundation is Quietly Tackling in Nigeria In Nigeria, some of the most devastating health struggles are the least visible. They don’t spark outrage online. They don’t trend. But they keep families in pain, limit productivity, and trap entire communities in cycles of poverty. This is the gap the SG Holdings Foundation is quietly filling. Under the leadership of philanthropist and business executive Deji Somoye, the foundation has taken a deliberate, community-first approach to healthcare.
Health is not a privilege; it’s a human right, and if Nigeria is to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and SDG 3, Good Health and Well-being, by 2030, the private sector must become an active partner in driving systemic change. According to the World Bank, over 70% of Nigeria’s healthcare spending out-of-pocket is one of the highest rates in the world. That means millions are one illness away from financial ruin, especially in rural communities where services are scarce or non-existent.
The SG Holdings Foundation’s grassroots model offers a community-driven solution, one that meets people where they are and delivers sustainable impacts.
Here are five critical healthcare issues the foundation is quietly but powerfully addressing:
1. Gaps in Primary Healthcare in Underserved Communities In rural areas like Ijemo, Abeokuta, access to consistent and comprehensive primary healthcare remains a challenge for many residents. In response, the SG Holdings Foundation deployed a medical team of 50 professionals to deliver free diagnostics, medications, eye screenings, and wellness education to over 600 residents in a single outreach.
For communities where a routine check-up can require hours of travel and unaffordable costs, it’s a lifesaving intervention and a model for localized public health delivery.
2. Financially Out-of-Reach Surgical Needs Hernias are common and treatable, but for many low-income Nigerians, surgical costs remain out of reach. In 2018, the SG Holdings Foundation sponsored hernia surgeries for 200 patients in Ogun State. This effort aligns with research by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, which found that 5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe, affordable surgical care, and sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden.
3. Mobility and Inclusion in Rural Health Systems Mobility impairments are often compounded by a lack of infrastructure and support. In 2023, SG Holdings Foundation donated 100 wheelchairs across Odeda, Obafemi-Owode, and Abeokuta, improving not just access to movement but access to dignity, inclusion, and continuity of care.
These wheelchairs often make the difference between isolation and participation, especially in communities where assistive devices are virtually unavailable through public systems.
4. Infertility, Stigma, and the Cost of Hope Infertility affects 1 in 4 couples in developing countries, yet in Nigeria, it is often misunderstood, stigmatized, and priced far out of reach. In 2020, SG Holdings Foundation donated ₦5 million to the Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation’s IVF Grant Project, enabling multiple families to access fertility treatment.
This intervention acknowledged that emotional well-being is a healthcare right and that breaking cycles of silence and shame is as important as clinical care.
5. Emergency Support for Frontline Workers During COVID-19 During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when health systems were overwhelmed, SG Holdings Foundation provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and essential medical supplies to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), supporting frontline health workers at a time when resources were critically low.
This action stood out not just for its timing, but for its clarity of purpose: to act where systems lag, to fill gaps where lives are at stake.
What distinguishes the SG Holdings Foundation is not just what they do, but how and why they do it. Their work underscores a powerful truth: the private sector can be a key partner in national wellbeing, not by duplicating government efforts, but by reaching the far-reaching corners and responding with empathy and long-term vision.
As Nigeria strives toward the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and 2030 SDG targets, organizations like SG Holdings Foundation prove that real impact begins not only in boardrooms but on the ground, one community, one intervention at a time. https://dailypost.ng/2025/07/21/five-critical-healthcare-issues-sg-holdings-foundation-is-quietly-tackling-in-nigeria/

Business › APRA Sec Gen, Omoniyi Ibietan, Named In PR Power List 2025 by Josepholome(op): 6:16pm On Jul 20, 2025 |
A former Special Adviser to the Minister of Information and National Orientation and public relations (PR) strategist, who is currently the Secretary General of African Public Relations Association (APRA), Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan has emerged as one of the top public relations experts named in the PR Power List 2025.
The event, which took place on Friday, 18th July 2025, at Alliance Francaise, Mike Adenuga Centre in Lagos, brought powerful PR personalities across the globe under the same umbrella for the recognition.
Omoniyi, the immediate past Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, made the list under the Changemakers category.
About 50 Nigerians were listed in the recognition organised for the fourth consecutive year by GLG Communications in partnership with The Guardian newspaper.
The recognition aims at celebrating 50 of Nigeria’s most influential PR and communications professionals who have shaped narratives and driven meaningful change across industries over the past year.
Omoniyi, who is a lecturer at Rome Business School was listed mainly because of his footprint which spans government, media, and academia, spanning the institutionalization of community radio policy in Nigeria; popularisation of the use of new media in public communication; and prompt, pervasive delivery of government communication.
Also part of the reasons for making the list was his effective communication management of the outbreak of Avian Influenza (sometimes, he issued three bulletins in a day); effective management of public communication during 2006 census; curating and advertising the achievements of Federal Government in all sectors between 1999 and 2007 under the title, "Lest We Forget".
Publisher of TechEconony, Peter Oluka, who curated the event, hailed Omoniyi’s track record, saying the feat shows that innovation isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it is thoughtful, persistent, and people-focused.”
According to him, “As Nigeria navigates the treacherous tides of information disorder, media distrust, and shifting civic engagement, one man’s decades-long career has quietly but powerfully shaped how institutions communicate, how narratives are managed, and how policy is perceived. That man is Dr. Omoniyi P. Ibietan, recently named to the PR Power List 2025 in recognition of his exceptional influence, particularly excellence, impact, and innovation in strategic communications, thought leadership, and institutional transparency.”
Oluka said Dr. Ibietan, who berthed on Nigeria’s landscape as an activist, has been defending the people's rights to democracy and freedom as a student leader from the late 1980s up to early 2000.
He said, “But for those who have followed his journey across journalism, academia, government, and regulatory communications, the recognition for strategic public relations enterprise is long overdue.”
He further affirmed that, “Dr. Ibietan’s profile defies convention. From the early days as a student leader, civil rights activist, media freedom and broadcast media democratization advocate, to his tenure as Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), his communication approach has always been deliberate: clear, calm, and consistent. Hence, some people have described him as a Renaissance man.”
Oluka opined that, “at the NCC, he transformed what was often seen as a bureaucratic gatekeeper into a proactive communicator of digital inclusion, re-engineered spectrum policy, and regulatory transparency. His strategies, rooted in stakeholder mapping, multi-stakeholder relations, media engagement, and digital integration, repositioned the Commission in the eyes of both the media and the public."
“His initiatives in public communication, especially as Head of Online Media, was marked by proactive and anticipatory communication. From social media auditing to crisis communication playbooks, Ibietan ensured that government communication was not just about announcements but about alignment with citizen needs – a carry over from his days as Special Media Advisor to the Minister of Information and National Orientation,”
Dr. Ibietan holds a Ph.D. in Communication from North-West University, South Africa, in addition to multiple degrees from the University of Ibadan, University of Uyo, and other prestigious institutions. His groundbreaking, consequential book, "Social Media, Social Demography and Voting Behaviour in Nigeria", published by Premium Times Books in 2023, cemented his place in the pantheon of political public relations scholars whose work transcends theory to shape policy and practice.
He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the African Public Relations Association, a member of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), International Institute of Communications (IIC) and the Nigeria Community Radio Coalition (NCRC). https://thenationonlineng.net/apra-sec-gen-ibietan-named-in-pr-power-list-2025/

Politics › Mining Marshals Commander, Attah John Onoja Sues The Guardian For Defamation by Josepholome(op): 8:20am On Jul 07, 2025 |
https://dailytrust.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Marshal-1384x1536.jpg
The Commander of the Mining Marshals, Attah John Onoja, has filed a defamation lawsuit against The Guardian Newspaper, demanding a whopping ₦2 billion in exemplary damages over a publication he described as “false, malicious and unjustifiable.”
Filed through his legal counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, the suit seeks redress over an article published on The Guardian’s official website on June 23, 2025, titled “Community Alleges Involvement of Mining Marshals in Illegal Mining”. The plaintiff contends that the report defamed his character and called into question the integrity of the Mining Marshals, a newly established security outfit tasked with combating illegal mining in Nigeria.
According to court filings, Onoja is asking the court to grant an order of exemplary damages in the sum of ₦2,000,000,000 (Two Billion Naira) as compensation for the reputational damage caused by the publication, which he insists was “broadcast to the entire world without verification or balance.”
“The publication is not only a misrepresentation of facts but a direct assault on my character and the painstaking efforts of the Mining Marshals to cleanse Nigeria’s mineral sector,” Onoja said, adding that “there is a need to start bringing rogue journalism to account, so as to discourage the practice of publishing unverified hogwash to mislead the public and well-meaning Nigerians.”
The Mining Marshals Commander further stressed that all activities of the task force are “transparent, open to public scrutiny, and subject to the rule of law.” He questioned the rationale behind The Guardian’s decision to publish the allegations without contacting him or the agency for clarification.
“This kind of unprofessional journalism that fails to observe the fundamental principles of fairness, accuracy, and balance not only undermines public trust but poses a direct threat to ongoing national reforms,” he said.
Onoja emphasized that the Mining Marshals remain fully aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as implemented under the leadership of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development. He reiterated that the corps will not be deterred by “sponsored attacks or blackmail orchestrated by elements sympathetic to illegal mining networks.”
“The Mining Marshals will not be distracted. We are on a mission to sanitize Nigeria’s mining corridors and restore sanity to this strategic sector. No amount of smear campaigns will deter that resolve,” Onoja declared.
As of press time, The Guardian has not issued a formal response to the legal action. It is also unclear whether the newspaper intends to retract the story or defend its position in court.
The case is expected to test the limits of press freedom, ethical journalism, and accountability in Nigeria’s media space. https://dailytrust.com/mining-marshals-commander-files-n2bn-defamation-suit/ |
Politics › SGF Position Cannot Stop North-central From Having National Chairman - APC Forum by Josepholome(op): 2:25pm On Jul 06, 2025 |
The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has declared that holding the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) cannot stop the region from producing the National Chairman of the party.
The Forum made the declaration in a statement issued by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, on Saturday in Abuja. The statement was in response to insinuations that the position of SGF should be taken away from the North-Central if the region is to produce the National Chairman of the APC.
Insisting that the North-Central should produce the National Chairman of the APC, in line with the party's subsisting zoning arrangement, the Forum kicked against the suggestion that the region cannot produce both the SGF and National Chairman.
"The North-Central deserves to produce the SGF and APC National Chairman due to the region's contributions to the party. The North-Central gave President Bola Tinubu and the APC the third highest number of votes in the 2023 presidential poll - behind the South-West and North-West," the statement noted.
Tinubu received 1,760,993 votes (41.3%) in the North-Central in 2023. Peter Obi of the Labour Party got 1,415,557 votes (33.2%) while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party received 1,025,178 votes (24.1%) in the region.
"Among the various geopolitical zones, the North-Central has the highest number of APC governors. APC controls five of the six North-Central states - Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa and Niger. This unmatched record demonstrates the strength and the wide acceptance of the party in the region.
"Returning the position of National Chairman to the North-Central, in accordance with the zoning arrangement of the APC, is not a favour, rather it is well deserved. The North-Central deserves to produce both the SGF and APC National Chairman. Holding the position of SGF cannot stop the North-Central from producing the National Chairman," the statement said.
The Forum, in the same vein, faulted calls that the position of APC National Chairman should be reserved for Christians from the North-Central.
Warning those behind the calls to have a rethink, the APC Forum stressed that the North-Central is a secular region.
"The politicians who are bringing up the issue of religion are doing so because of their selfish interests. We hereby warn them to have a rethink. The North-Central has historically been a secular region and we will not allow self-serving individuals to use religion to divide our people."
The Forum alleged that the particular politicians pushing the religious agenda did not support Tinubu and the APC during the 2023 presidential election.
"We know that these are the same people who worked for Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in the last election. They did not support President Bola Tinubu, rather they delivered their polling units to the Labour Party," the Forum said while urging Tinubu to ignore calls that religion should be considered in selecting the next APC National Chairman.
Instead of considering religion, the North-Central APC Forum urged Tinubu to consider track records in making appointments.
"Only individuals with proven track records should be considered for appointment into any position, that is the only way to maintain the growth, progress and dominance of the APC. Any other consideration, including religion, should be jettisoned.
"Our endorsement of Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura for the position of National Chairman is based on his track records - as a loyal, committed party man and a political office holder who had served as a governor and a senator.
"We believe that the party, and the country in general, will be better if track record is considered when appointments are made," the statement said.
Restating the endorsement of Al-Makura for the position of APC National Chairman, the Forum noted that he is from the North-Central, particularly Nasarawa State, where the removed former national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, hails from.
The Forum further observed that Al-Makura is from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc which is part of the three legacy parties that merged to form the APC. It noted that among the three legacy parties - the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) - the CPC bloc is the only one that has not held the APC chairmanship position.
The statement added, "Senator Tanko Al-Makura was a two-term governor whose clout and experience are pluses and both former and sitting governors will see him as one of their own. He was a former Senator who will be seen as part and parcel of the legislature. He was among the chairmanship aspirants who accepted without grudges to the consensus option that threw up Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman during the APC National Convention in 2022. His loyalty to APC and Mr. President is not in doubt.
"He has discharged critical party assignments in the country that gave him first hand ideas and intrinsic knowledge of the party nationally."
The party assignments include Chairman, Ekiti State APC Primary Election Committee that produced former Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2018. Al-Makura also served as the Chairman of the North-East Zone Reconciliation Committee in 2018, and equally as a member of the Baba Bisi Akande APC Reconciliation Committee in 2020.
"He has a very rich experience and knowledge of political activities as he was Youth Leader (Plateau State) in National Party of Nigeria (NPN) - 1979; State Secretary (Plateau State) in National Republican Convention– 1989; founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – 1999; Governor on the platform of the CPC – 2011; pioneer member and signatory to the merger that found APC - 2013 and APC Senator – 2019," the statement added.

Politics › Natasha: Judiciary Has Proven To Be The Last Hope Of The Oppressed, - Group by Josepholome(op): 8:35pm On Jul 04, 2025 |
Judiciary Has Proven to Be the Last Hope of the Oppressed, Says Action Collective ….Hails Court's Ruling on Akpoti-Uduaghan The Action Collective, a leading civic advocacy group, has hailed the declaration of the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, by the Senate as unconstitutional and illegal a resounding affirmation that the Nigerian judiciary remains the last refuge for those oppressed by institutional power. In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Teddy Onyejuwe, and made available to the press on Friday, July, 4, 2025, the group said the court’s verdict ordering her immediate reinstatement by the Senate demonstrates the strength and independence of the judiciary in upholding democratic values and protecting the rights of citizens—especially when those in positions of authority attempt to silence dissenting voices or undermine elected mandates. According to Onyejuwe, “This ruling is a major victory not just for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, but for all Nigerians who continue to suffer from arbitrary decisions by public institutions. It sends a strong message that justice is still possible in Nigeria, even in the face of power, privilege, and political influence. The court has once again shown courage, integrity, and commitment to the Constitution.” Action Collective further noted that the judgment reinforces public confidence in the judiciary and will serve as a deterrent to institutions that may be tempted to act beyond the law. It urged public officials and legislative bodies to respect the rule of law and operate within the boundaries set by the Constitution, warning that the judiciary will not shield impunity behind official titles or parliamentary privilege. The group called on Nigerians to continue to seek redress through legal and democratic means, expressing confidence that with decisions like this, the nation’s courts remain a bulwark against oppression. “We salute the Honourable Justice Binta Nyako and the Federal High Court for rising to the occasion and restoring faith in the judiciary,” the statement concluded. https://newsdirectng.com/judiciary-has-proven-to-be-the-last-hope-of-the-oppressed-says-action-collective/ |

Politics › News Article From Hon Clinton Odafe Garuba by Josepholome(op): 10:59am On Jun 30, 2025 |
PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE..
NEWS ARTICLE FROM HON CLINTON ODAFE GARUBA
My first encounter with Bagos was through the late Senator G.N.S. Pwajok, and the story surrounding that meeting is quite unfortunate—something I think we should leave for another day.
Despite the sad event, I had the opportunity to meet with Hon. Bagos before the elections that led him to the House of Representatives, and I decided to support him.
My household and I voted for him, and three years into his tenure, when I noticed some missteps being taken, I invited Bagos to lunch for in Abuja for a candid discussion about these issues. Once again, during the last election, I and my household voted for our friend and brother.
In political circles, rumors fly as we all know. When it was rumored that certain individuals had devised a plan to undermine the political influence of someone I consider a father , I initially dismissed it as just another lie spread against politicians by opponents. As the African proverb goes, “The fool at the market sees not the danger that lurks,” I called my brother Bagos and advised him to visit his father ( Baba Jang)to dispel this rumor(this was never done).
Sadly, I realized almost too late that this was a well-orchestrated plan aimed at undermining the hard work our leaders have put in for decades—a work that earned the zone the title of "beautiful bride," sadly threatened for selfish reasons.
Among the actions taken by Bagos that seek to disrupt the political equilibrium is the attempt to impose a local government party chairman on the people of Jos South.
One morning, the old man in Du was alerted by some stakeholders who informed him that Hon. Bagos and the former Commissioner of Finance, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the party in the zone, had appointed a party chairman in his local government without consulting party leaders.
The elected chairman of the party had been away for quite some time, and there was an urgent need to replace him with party congresses approaching. However, Bagos was uncomfortable with the acting Vice Chairman and made a change in leadership almost singlehandedly.
Stakeholders met and agreed to revert to the previous status quo, but it was a struggle to make that happen. It’s significant to note that Baba Jang called two meetings that all other stakeholders attended, except for Bagos, who insisted that the leadership change must go ahead.
Furthermore, I would like to draw your attention to the recent past, just before the concluded local government elections. While the leaders of the People's Democratic Party encouraged party faithful across all local government areas to work towards consensus—believing it would reduce friction and bolster cohesion—Hon. Bagos, unfortunately, made consensus impossible in Jos South, which should have been a shining light.
After many consultations and meetings, stakeholders decided on a candidate and received approval from their leaders, yet Bagos forcefully pushed his legislative aide to run, ignoring all pleas to drop his ambition. Close observers can attest to the role Bagos and his associates played that day.
Shortly after, Bagos joined the campaign for the party as if nothing had happened. As Bob Marley said, “You can fool some people some of the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”
Bagos's support group, which has taken the initiative to politicize my simple call for unity, should know that throughout this process,
Bagos avoided the same man with whom he has been posing for pictures online as a sign of loyalty—only paying him a visit last week. I'm sure he did not take that opportunity to discuss these pressing issues.
In closing, the Bible in Psalm 127 says, "Children are like arrows in the quiver of their parents." As a responsible child, I cannot sit by and watch things go wrong at home. I want to make it clear that this matter is deeply personal to me, and as I said, it is a family affair that should not be politicized with hidden agendas and throwing stones in the name of support groups. In other words, trying to hide under one finger.
I would like to sincerely thank His Excellency, the Governor, for not only his purposeful and impactful leadership thus far but also for not endorsing actions that could drag us back to Egypt. God forbid.

Politics › North-central Forum Endorses Al-makura For APC National Chairman by Josepholome(op): 3:13pm On Jun 29, 2025 |
By Golok Nanmwa, Jos
The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has endorsed a former governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, for the position of National Chairman of the party.
A statement released in Abuja on Sunday by the Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, said the endorsement followed extensive consultations among APC stakeholders in the North-Central.
In the statement titled, 'Why Al-Makura deserves to be APC National Chairman', the Forum noted that Al-Makura is from the North-Central, particularly Nasarawa State, where the removed former national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, hails from.
The Forum further observed that Al-Makura is from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc which is part of the three legacy parties that merged to forma the APC. It noted that among the three legacy parties - the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) - the CPC bloc is the only one that has not held the APC chairmanship position.
"Senator Tanko Al-Makura was a two-term Governor whose clout and experience are pluses and both former and sitting governors will see him as one of their own. He was a former Senator who was seen as part and parcel of legislature. He was among the chairmanship aspirants who accepted without grudges to the consensus option that threw up Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman during the APC National Convention in 2022.
"His loyalty to APC and Mr. President is not in doubt," the statement said.
Further stating reasons for endorsing Al-Makura for the position of APC National Chairman, the Forum pointed out that "he has discharged critical party assignments in the country that gave him first hand ideas and intrinsic knowledge of the party nationally".
The party assignments, according to the statement, include Chairman, Ekiti State APC Primary Election Committee that produced former Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2018.
He also served as the Chairman of the North-East Zone Reconciliation Committee in 2018, and equally as a member of the Baba Bisi Akande Reconciliation Committee in 2020.
"Has a very rich experience and knowledge of political activities as he was Youth Leader (Plateau State) in National Party of Nigeria (NPN) - 1979; State Secretary (Plateau State) in National Republican Convention– 1989; founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – 1999; Governor on the platform of the CPC – 2011; pioneer member and signatory to the merger that found APC - 2013 and APC Senator – 2019," the statement added.
The North-Central APC Forum further noted that Al-Makura was among the CPC bloc stakeholders who stood by the APC and President Bola Tinubu when some members wanted to pull out of the party and join the opposition coalition, earlier in 2025.
"He is a bridge builder and an advocate of inclusivity as he relates with the disability community that has over 20 million people as he is also a person living with disability," the Forum said.
The endorsement of Al-Makura came about 24 hours after the North-Central APC Forum released a statement on Saturday to demand the return of the position of National Chairman to the region.
Going by the subsisting zoning arrangement in the APC, the North-Central is meant to produce the National Chairman of the ruling party.
Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, became APC National Chairman when the position was zoned to the North-Central during the party's National Convention in March 2022 but he resigned in July 2023 without completing the tenure, leading to the appointment of Abdullahi Ganduje, ex-Kano State governor, as National Chairman in August 2023.
Ganduje, on his part, resigned on June 27, 2025, prompting the APC Forum to demand the return of the position to the North-Central, to enable the region complete Adamu's tenure.
"After extensive deliberations among stakeholders of the North-Central region, the North-Central APC Forum has decided to endorse Senator Tanko Al-Makura for the position of APC National Chairman. This is is furtherance of our demand that the position of National Chairman should return to the North-Central in line with the zoning arrangement of the APC," the statement released by the Forum on Sunday said.

Politics › Reno Omokri Releases E-Mail Confirming He Employed Segun Showunmi by Josepholome(op): 3:31pm On Jun 24, 2025 |
Dear Citizens of Nigeria,
Please find attached an email between Waziri Atiku Abubakar and me at exactly 9:54 PM, on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, after I had just interviewed Mr. Segun Showunmi and negotiated his salary.
I am willing to provide the metadata of this email and an IP trace to journalists who reach me privately.
There are even more damning evidence than this to establish that I singularly recruited Mr. Segun Showunmi, but to preserve the privacy of people that I respect, I do not wish to publish them.
However, if Mr. Segun Showunmi continues to deny that I interviewed and recruited him and negotiated his salary, before approving him to resume duty, then they may be published.
I thank the then National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, who recommended Segun Showunmi to me, for corroborating the fact that I employed him as Waziri Atiku Abubakar's spokesman.
And just like I have done with Mr. Showunmi, I have facts to back up EVERYTHING I said during my Honest Bunch Podcast interview. Even if I am nothing, at least I am a meticulous record keeper.

Politics › Olisa Metuh Backs Omokri’s Claim Of Hiring PDP Chieftain Showunmi For Atiku by Josepholome(op): 9:36am On Jun 24, 2025 |
A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, has corroborated Reno Omokri’s claim that he hired Segun Showunmi as spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 presidential campaign. Metuh confirmed that Omokri was indeed the one who hired Showunmi, following a recommendation from him. This is according to Metuh in a confirmation gotten from him by our correspondent on Tuesday morning. He said, “It happened in 2018 when I was still in politics. When Reno called me to recommend someone for Atiku, I initially thought of Deji Adeyanju, but I remembered that he had left the PDP. I had encouraged him to set up an advocacy group to fight Nigeria’s course. “Then, I remembered Segun, so I recommended Segun to Reno. I told him to call Reno and he called Reno and that was it.” Metuh further stated that there was no controversy about the process that led to Showunmi’s announcement as Atiku’s spokesperson. “There is absolutely no controversy about that,” he stated. Before ending the call, Metuh added, “I don’t think they are (Reno and Segun) still in PDP anymore, and so, there is no controversy about that.” Omokri, who served as spokesperson to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, had made the initial claim during an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, where he pushed back against a suggestion that he gained public prominence through his association with Atiku Abubakar, PUNCH Online earlier reported. In the same interview, Omokri also published a version of his remarks on Facebook. He said: “If I am nothing at all, I am a meticulous record keeper. In May 2018, Olisa Metuh, the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, recommended Segun Showunmi for the role of spokesman to Waziri Atiku Abubakar. “Mr. Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to send his resume (what we call a CV) to me. Thereafter, Olisa Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to contact me for a job interview. “I spoke to Segun Showunmi from California and negotiated his salary with him. I thereafter informed Waziri Atiku Abubakar, and Segun Showunmi was announced as his spokesman on the terms I negotiated with him. “If there is any controversy or if anybody is using foul language to deny the obvious truth, then I urge the media to contact Mr. Olisa Metuh, who is an eyewitness and who was the one who recommended Segun Showunmi to me for employment as Waziri Atiku’s spokesman. “After he was employed, Mr. Segun Showunmi returned to Mr. Olisa Metuh to thank him for recommending him to me. “I do not want to be forced to publish no evidence. I would rather not. But if I have to, then I can. “I urge anyone wanting to deny the obvious to think twice. Again, I repeat that if I am nothing at all, at least I am a meticulous record keeper.” Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reported that Showunmi had swiftly on Monday night faulted Omokri’s claim tagging it as “rubbish.” However, Showunmi has yet to respond to the SMS and WhatsApp texts sent to him as calls made to his line didn’t go through as of press time. https://punchng.com/olisa-metuh-backs-omokris-claim-of-hiring-pdp-chieftain-showunmi-for-atiku/

Politics › A Brilliant Spokesperson - Guild Of Editors, GOCOP Laud Soneye’s Tenure At NNPCL by Josepholome(op): 12:08pm On Jun 23, 2025 |
The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers and the Guild of Editors have described the tenure of Femi Soneye, who recently stepped aside as Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), as impactful.
Among those who praised his stewardship is the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, who described Soneye as “open, capable, and accessible,” and the GOCOP President Maureen Chigbo.
Anaba said the commitment of Soneye at NNPC Ltd helped him to win multiple communications awards and build strong relations with the media while Chigbo commended Soneye for his exemplary leadership in managing the image of the NNPCL.
The outgoing CCCO, Soneye, announced his stepping aside from the state-owned company on Saturday after 20 months in the role.
“I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.
“This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence,” Soneye said.
In October 2023, NNPCL appointed the media guru to lead the Corporate Communications team of the National Oil Company and drive the brand penetration, strategic communications initiatives, and stakeholder management.
In an interview with THE WHISTLER, Anaba, emphasized that Soneye excelled in two critical areas of public relations: maintaining a trusted relationship with his principal and ensuring open communication with the public and press.
Anaba said, “Soneye was open. This gave him the edge to win several communications awards of different newspapers. He was open. He was capable. I judge PR people based on two criteria.
“One, his relationship with his principal, Femi passed that test. Two, is he accessible or friendly with the public? I will say yes- a 100 per cent.
“On these two, he did well. Also, he didn’t make trouble and enemies for NNPC. He was a brilliant spokesperson, no doubt about it.”
Reflecting on Soneye’s legacy, the Editors’ Guild President said the former CCCO played a key role in enhancing NNPC’s public image, making the corporation “more acceptable to the public.”
The president narrated, “His tenure was good because my colleagues could call him and he picks. This proves he was ever ready to explain and assist.
“I will say that during his tenure, Femi was able to showcase NNPC in a good light. He made NNPC more acceptable to the public.”
On her part, Chigbo hailed Soneye for professionally managing the image of the NNPCL during his tenure.
She highlighted his effective communication skills and the strong public image he built for the company, which earned him two prestigious awards from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
Chigbo also noted Soneye’s solid relationship with the media, particularly with GOCOP, and expressed hope that his successor would build on the foundation he laid to further enhance NNPCL’s corporate reputation.
She said Soneye “Managed the image of the NNPCL professionally and his effective communication skills and good public image he built for the company earned him two prominent awards from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
“He had good and solid relations with the media industry, especially the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP). It is hoped that whoever succeeds him will continue from where he stopped to enhance the image of the NNPCL.”
Before his appointment in 2023, the outgoing NNPC spokesperson was the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Per Second News LLC, from 2012, where he was responsible for the commercial strategy of the Per Second News, Communications and Mount Olive group.
Soneye served in the United States Air Force, Joint Base Andrews, Washington-DC between 2009 to 2015. Specifically, he was at the Health Services Management Officer of the 459th Aerospace Medicine Squadron.
Also, he was the Editor of the squadron’s Air Force One Newsletter of the 459th Air Refueling Wing, Andrews Air Force Base between 2009 and 2013 where he was providing guidelines to authors for preparing and submitting manuscripts. https://thewhistler.ng/a-brilliant-spokesperson-guild-of-editors-gocop-applaud-soneyes-tenure-at-nnpcl/?fbclid=IwY2xjawLF-CVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvxlAyUTzTA598R48lrkN0WY42w39kSq3Q0jQ07ysrCiFjbMUmyJYpkTtnVM_aem_ALzKui1sagDKcnpt6410jw&sfnsn=scwspwa

Politics › Defend Yourself, Stop Hiding Behind Known Blackmailers, Abdullai Tells Akpabio by Josepholome(op): 6:11pm On May 02, 2025 |
Prominent Nigerian politician, Mohammed Abdullahi, has urged the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to address head-on the serious allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and others, rather than relying on hired blackmailers and image launderers to deflect public scrutiny. Abdullahi pointed to the recent involvement of one Professor Mgbake, whose contradictory statements and questionable conduct during her so-called exposé on Senator Natasha revealed her as a serial liar.
He noted that while Mgbake publicly denied any link to the Senate President, she contradicted herself by revealing Senator Akpabio’s private phone number during her media attacks—an action that, according to Abdullahi, not only exposes her deceit but also suggests coordination. He described her role in the ongoing media campaign as a calculated effort to distract from the real issues and shield the Senate President from accountability.
Abdullahi expressed concern over Akpabio’s reliance on individuals with a known track record of dubious conduct to defend him in the court of public opinion. He noted that Professor Mgbake, who recently launched a smear campaign against Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/share/1NpVewWeEC/?mibextid=wwXIfr has been exposed in multiple publications for alleged fraudulent and criminal activities. These include detailed reports on Nairaland describing her as a con artist https://www.nairaland.com/5915550/sandra-duru-con-artist-work and a damning investigation on Secrets Reporter alleging she defrauded clients through front companies https://secretsreporter.com/sandra-duru-defraud-clients-using-companies-fronts/.
He stated that it was both disgraceful and cowardly for a high-ranking public officer like the Senate President to associate with individuals of such questionable reputation in a bid to discredit genuine complainants and distract from a matter of national importance. “Rather than defend himself with honour, Akpabio has chosen to hide behind people whose public records are smeared with controversy and criminal allegations,” Abdullahi said.
Abdullahi also questioned the authenticity of the academic credentials being paraded by Professor Mgbake, noting that her so-called professorship remains shrouded in doubt. “It is unfortunate that a matter as sensitive and serious as sexual harassment is being reduced to a media circus involving paid agents and individuals who themselves lack public trust,” he added.
He urged Senator Akpabio to face the allegations with the courage expected of a national leader and stop funding smear campaigns aimed at undermining the voices of his accusers. “This is about integrity and accountability. No Nigerian—no matter how highly placed—should be above scrutiny. The Senate President must rise to the occasion and prove his innocence through facts, not hired propaganda,” Abdullahi stated. https://newsdirectng.com/stand-up-and-defend-yourself-stop-hiding-behind-known-blackmailers-mohammed-abdullahi-tells-akpabio/

Politics › Edo Tribunal Decision As A Metaphor - Dr. Sam Amadi by Josepholome(op): 2:34pm On Apr 30, 2025 |
Recently, the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal delivered judgement on the petition of the PDP Governorship candidate on the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC candidate as the winner. The PDP had complained that the APC did not win the highest number of valid votes and that the election was marred by substantial irregularity because of non-compliance with the strict requirements of the law. Shorn of legal jargon, the petition simply alleged that INEC rigged the election for the APC, that the APC candidate was nor duly elected.
The judgement of the tribunal is now a matter of public discourse because it is not just a judicial determination. It goes beyond that. It is a metaphor for what has become the fate of democracy in Nigeria. The problem with judicial involvement in election disputes in Nigeria is not because it is leading to the judicialization of politics. The problem is the gradual but determined destruction, through judicial decisions, of credible incentives for free and fair elections in Nigeria. If there is no strong incentive for the electoral management body to ensure free and fair elections, then the electoral system is not competitive. Without competitive elections, that is, elections were powerful incumbent could easily lose, it will be difficult to sustain democracy in Nigeria.
To understand what damage is being done to democracy in the sort of judgement delivered by the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, it is important to restate the fundamentals of democracy. At a time when the leading democracies in the world are drifting towards autocracy or fascism in their politics, simply restating the fundamentals of democracy becomes a revolutionary act. In a time when transitional democracies like Nigeria and some of the African countries are shifting towards electoral autocracy, it is important to remind ourselves the meaning of democracy.
There are three fundamentals features of democracy. The most fundamental is political equality. Democracy starts from the premise that citizens in a polity are equal. This equality finds expression in the simple fact that they jointly make laws that regulate their affairs and govern themselves. In the classical Greek City-state, Athens, the mythical home of democracy, political equality meant that all male citizens met at the Agora daily to deliberate and make laws and take turns periodically to sit in the magisterium to decide disputes. In the larger and complex modern society, political equality means that every adult citizen has a right to elect those who will sit in the modern Agora (parliament) and presidential villas to make laws and execute them. So, the first and foremost mark of a democracy is that the people choose their leaders as political equals. The concept of political equality has great implications for how the electoral system is designed and the management of the larger political institutions.
The second fundamental of democracy is the guarantee of freedom and liberty of the people. If the people are politically equal, it means that no one should violate the dignity of anyone. It means that the essence of government is that no one’s life is more valued in a fundamental sense than that of another. This is why Robert A. Dahl argued that “Democracy is not only a process of governing. Because rights are necessary elements of democratic political institutions, democracy is inherently also a system of rights. Rights are among the essential building blocks of democratic process of government ”.
The third fundamental of democracy is that the regime in power can easily be removed by the people whenever they are dissatisfied of its performance. This is what Robert Dahl calls ‘responsiveness’. The beauty of democracy is that those who occupy public offices know that if they do not satisfy the expectations of the people, they could lose their positions of power. This reality of losing elections and accepting the outcome is what Joseph Schumpeter identified as the essence of democracy and what makes democracy superior as an engine of economic and social development. The feasibility of removing non-performing public officials is the inherent feature of democracy that makes it a more reliable driver of economic growth than any other model of governance.
The device through which democracy achieves its purposes is elections. Modern democracy has been reduced to representative democracy. This is so because the only way we can achieve self-determination in a large and complex society is by having a few people representing the rest of us. These representatives are chosen through periodic elections. There are no more popular democracies. We have only representative democracies. The heart of representative democracy is elections. The most important work that citizen of democracies do is to elect representatives who thereafter act on their behalf on issues of public interest.
There are elements of good electoral system that leads to democracy. These elements are grouped together as elements of ‘free and fair’ elections. Free and fair elections have three elements that ensure that they can produce a democratic governance. The first element is that every adult citizen can register to vote. In many countries, 18 year olds are old enough to vote. Making good provisions for every adult citizen to register to vote is the most important element of free and fair elections. The second element is that voting must be voluntary and uncoerced. This is the notion of freeness. Political freedom requires that citizens make a choice of who governs in the atmosphere of freedom. This is also an aspect of competitiveness. Except there is freedom to freely associate politically and to vote whoever we like, there is no competitive elections. And this leads to the third element of a democratic electoral system, namely, that votes are accurately counted and announced. The integrity and credibility of the electoral system are hinged on the pillar of accurate counting of votes and announcement of results. We can attest that Stalin got it right when he noted that those who count the votes are more important than those who cast votes.
Competitiveness requires that opposition to incumbents enjoys the full complement of political rights to freely organize and mobilize against the incumbents. Where the political environment and voting process are suppressive and oppressive against some contestants for public offices, there are no democratic elections. The final fundamental element of a good electoral system is that the votes are accurately counted and announced. This is why, as Stalin once noted that those who count the votes are more important than those who cast the votes.
These core elements of a good electoral system are incorporated in our electoral laws and procedures. The Election Act of 2022 has improved on some of the deficiencies of the electoral system by providing safeguards against electoral fraud. Prevalent electoral frauds destroy the heart of electoral democracy because it substitutes the will of a few for the will of the people. Where elections are notoriously and consistently fraudulent, elections can no longer be competitive because the opposition will find it difficult to win the incumbents, even where there is clear demand by the electorates for change of leadership. Free and fair elections have inherent and instrumental values. Inherently, free and fair elections make real the notion of political equality and self-determination at the heart of democracy as a value and practice. If elections are not free and fair, it means that the will of the few will trump the will of the majority. It means that citizens are not self-determining because those who make and execute laws are not their representatives. Instrumentally, free and fair elections make strong the incentive structure of democratic governance that ensure political officeholders respond to the needs of the people because they could be removed from power next time.
The responsibility to realize these features of a good electoral system which are largely stated in our electoral law rests on INEC. Over the years, INEC has failed this responsibility. It is safe to say that since 1999 we have witnessed a continuing degeneration of the integrity of the electoral system. Each general election seems to be worse than the preceding one. This is as the technology of electoral management improves. This degeneration of the integrity of the electoral system as its technological and logistical quality improves has made many to argue that the problem with elections in Nigeria is human agency not law, not technology. In support of the institutional pessimists, the fact that despite the incorporation of real-time electronic transmission of results from the polling units to the election view portal (IreV) and the assurances by INEC leadership that had a foolproof technology platform, the 2023 presidential election was rigged because INEC shut down the IreV and refused to electronically transmit results. At the presidential tribunal, INEC argued that it had the discretion to go back on its commitment. INEC gutted its most secured guarantor of free and fair elections So, the 2023 presidential election failed because INEC decided to rig the election, not because technology failed or legal provisions were insufficient.
The reform of the electoral law in 2022 tried to improve the credibility and reliability of elections in Nigeria by eliminating the avenues for rigging. To ensure the accuracy of votes, it provides for biometric accreditation and mandates that where the result of votes in a polling unit is more the the total number of voters duly accredited through the biometric data capture system, the result is invalid. The law also mandates that before voting begins the polling officers should write down in a prescribed form the serial numbers and other details of voting materials, result sheets and other sensitive material. Failure to do this is a substantial non-compliance that nullifies the result from the polling unit. In Edo governorship election, INEC refused to follow these safeguards and declared a result wildly different from those it uploaded on its electronic platform. In this instance, a strong safeguard against electoral manipulation was gutted by compromised and corrupt officials. Human agency fails the test as it did in the 2023 presidential election. The argument in support of the role of human agency in the failure of Nigeria’s electoral system to meet the requirements of free and fair elections does not end with the administrative management of elections. It extends to the judicial management of elections through electoral dispute settlement. The Electoral Act, 2022 provides a clear guide for effective and coherent judicial management of elections. It requires the court to nullify elections where these fundamental conditions of free and fair are not satisfied. But as the Edo Governorship Tribunal judgment shows, the human agency problem shows up again. Judges misconceive the essence of election jurisprudence and misdirect themselves to absolve corrupt electoral officers and approve clear electoral fraud. Through the wrongful exercise of human agency, the judiciary undermines the institutional basis of electoral democracy by encouraging electoral manipulation.
By its judgment delivered on April 2, 2025, the Edo Governorship Tribunal perpetuates the judicial support for electoral mismanagement. In that judgement, the Edo State Governorship Tribunal dismissed the petition of the PDP candidate at the governorship election against INEC for declaring the APC candidate as the duly elected Governor of Edo State in the 2024 governorship election. The PDP candidate petitioned the Tribunal on the basis that the INEC invalidly declared the APC candidate as winner based on false invalid results. Evidence of independent poll watchers is that the declaration was fraudulently made with result sheets that were not the ones used at the polling units. INEC allegedly printed two different result sheets and used one to declare results unrelated to the real results uploaded to its result viewing portal. Also, many polling units had results where the total votes declared for the candidates were more than the number of accredited voters. This is despite that the Electoral Act mandates that the serial numbers of all the materials used for voting should be written in a prescribed form before voting to ensures the authenticity of the results. This safeguard was introduced because INEC officials often divert sensitive materials to politicians who write false election results which are used to declare electoral victory. To stop this, the Electoral Act in Section 73(2) requires that serial numbers of all voting papers, accreditation sheets and result sheets must be written down in prescribed form before voting. If this is not done the results are invalid. The tragedy of the Edo election is that all these safeguards were violated. INEC declared a winner with polling unit results different from polling unit results it had posted electronically in real-time from the polling unit after the voters were counted. Evidently, the result sheets used to declare the winner were fraudulently procured and not the only used for the election.
We need to break down the Edo election petition to properly understand the core issues and the legal position on each of them. The first issue concerns non-compliance, specifically under Section 73(2) of the Electoral Act, which mandates that before the commencement of polls, INEC must record the serial numbers of al sensitive materials such as BVAS machines, ballot papers, and result sheets, in the prescribed form. Failure to do so renders election in that polling unit automatically void. The Supreme Court in Augustine v. INEC clarified two crucial points. First, the prescribed form is Form EC25B, as specified by INEC itself. Second, that this is a ‘strict liability provision’. This means that the petitioner only needs to tender documentary evidence that the forms were not filled. The idea that only the ‘maker’ of the document can speak to the form, or that the polling unit witnesses must be called, is a legal fiction, with no grounding in Nigerian jurisprudence especially given recent reforms such as Section 137 of the Electoral Act, which states that oral evidence is unnecessary where the documents themselves show clear non-compliance.
The second main leg of the petition deals with the fraudulent collation of election results. This is perhaps the most damning allegation, because it highlights a systematic manipulation of results by the umpire himself. In the Edo election, INEC printed and deployed duplicate results sheets which were used to declare figures that bore no resemblance to what occurred at the polling units. This was of course established by TAP Initiative which took the results to a forensic examiner in South Africa. They have also petitioned ICPC to investigate and prosecute those found culpable. At Polling units, the APC would score 31 votes. This is the result posted on the Irev (the results are still there), but in the declared result certified by INEC you would see the votes recorded for APC in a result sheet not signed by the agent as 431. The position of the Supreme Court on the matter is unambiguous. In the case of Uzodinma v INEC, the Supreme Court held that where improper collation is alleged there is no need to call for polling unit agents as witnesses; since the conduct of the elections is not in dispute.
In its judgment, the Tribunal rejected the evidence of wrong collation because the BVAS machines supplied by INEC were not operated to show the actual results. The Tribunal described the process as ‘dumping evidence before the court’. This is pathetic. The tribunal relied on the words of Justice Okoro to the effect that what is required to prove over-voting is to provide BVAS machine, the accreditation sheets, and result sheet. The Tribunal interprets this to mean that because the INEC’s official who presented the BVAS machine did not operate them, the court cannot presume about the evidence. The irony is that it was the court that ordered INEC tendered BVAS machines. Why did the court not mandate the INEC to operate the machine before the court? Why should INEC’s errors of failure be to the detriment of the victim of its manipulation? It is sad that the tribunal gives INEC the opportunity to violate the law and go free and punish the electorates and the victims of the manipulation by INEC and the politicians.
What the Edo Governorship Tribunal did in effect is to validate an electoral coup executed by INEC. They have allowed INEC to hijack the constitutionally protected power of the citizens to elect their leaders; and have endorsed the deployment of a system that allows INEC handpick winners of electoral contests without recourse to the will of the people. This is not about PDP and APC. This is simply about INEC and how they have become the greatest single threat against our democracy today. It is also about how election dispute adjudication is enabling INEC to continue to usurp the people’s power and play rough through crippling technicalities. If the judiciary allows the travesty that took place in Edo State on September 21, 2024, to stand, then we might as well all go home. 2027 and all other elections will be farcical, impotent rituals used by the ruling class to give the unilateral appointment of political officeholders the imprimatur of democratic responsibility.
This sort of judicial decision on election cases is problematic because they underline the weakness of electoral management system and electoral jurisprudence in Nigeria. If the electoral management process is done right, the judiciary will have little role to play. When it is done badly, and the judiciary too plays its role badly, it creates an incentive for the electoral management to continue to fluff its role in the electoral process at the behest of corrupt and desperate politicians. This vicious circle continues unless the appellate courts reassert its authority to force the electoral management body to do its job right under the law.
The judgement of the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal is a metaphor of how Nigeria has become an electoral autocracy no longer a democracy. Elections are a veneer on oligarchic grasp of power in defiance of what the people do or say.

Business › How Two Childhood Friends Built Zap, Nigeria’s First Non-custodial Exchange by Josepholome(op): 11:23pm On Mar 24, 2025 |
How Two Childhood Friends Built Zap, Nigeria’s First Non-Custodial Exchange
Would you quit your stable job at Goldman Sachs to start your own crypto company in Nigeria amid a bear market? That’s precisely what our co-founder, Moore Dagogo-Hart did. Meanwhile, our founder and CEO, Tobiloba Asu-Johnson, was completing his master’s degree while laying the foundation for what would become Zap Africa.
Where it all Began
Zap didn’t start as a business idea. It began as a friendship. Tobi and Moore have known each other back when they were 9 years old. Though they attended different universities, they still shared a deep interest in tech and finance. It was during both their university years that they became fully immersed in crypto. But unlike most traders who relied on custodial exchanges, they went the opposite way. They had always been ”DeFi guys,” and they saw the potential of non-custodial exchanges early on and only had their assets in them.
Then came the wake-up call.
The year was 2022. Platforms like Patricia, FTX and Celsius were collapsing, one after the other, Bitcoin had plummeted to $20K, and trust in Nigerian crypto platforms was at an all-time low. They watched as friends, family and everyday people saw their life savings disappear overnight. This caused one of, if not the major challenge in the Nigerian crypto space faces: trust.
Why? Users have no real control over their assets.
Tobi and Moore knew there was a better way. So, they decided to create a solution. They weren’t looking at it from a business perspective, but more as traders who knew what the community truly needed. That’s when Zap was born.
They envisioned a platform where users wouldn’t have to depend on any central entity to hold their funds, a platform where financial security and autonomy were non-negotiable. And that’s when they decided to build Nigeria’s first-ever non-custodial exchange.
Building Zap in the Face of Challenges
Starting a company is never easy, but launching a crypto exchange in the middle of a bear market in a country with unclear regulations? That made it even harder.
There was and still isn’t a clear enough framework for digital assets in Nigeria. This was one of the biggest challenges they faced at first. That’s why securing Zap’s EU VASP license early on was a major milestone.
Funding was another unexpected milestone for us. Zap’s pre-seed round closed at a $4 million valuation, something many startups struggle to achieve so early. You always hear stories of startups struggling for years, scraping by on small rounds, but this brand secured $300K in its first year, allowing the company to scale faster than initially anticipated.
Another big challenge was working with banks. A lot of financial institutions are still very traditional, so they’re quite hesitant to support crypto exchanges. This then leads to difficulties in integrating with them as partners. Even in countries with clearer regulations, banks often impose restrictions that make it harder for users to transact seamlessly.
One of the most important and difficult challenges was building the right team. Hiring skilled individuals is one thing, but finding people with the right mindset is another. Anyone can have a great CV and the right technical skills, but if their attitude isn’t right, it becomes a problem. The founders had to focus not just on recruiting talent but on building a team that can lead and scale together. That foundation is what continues to drive Zap forward today.
And then there’s trust. After so many failed crypto platforms, why should users believe in Zap? The answer is simple: consistency. The longer Zap stayed, the more people trusted them. That trust is what allows the company to grow.
Over the past year, Zap has seen a significant shift. There are more users, bigger transaction volumes and increased confidence in the Zap platform.
Zap into the Future
Now, Zap is gearing up for our biggest innovation yet… a non-custodial wallet. With it, you will have complete control over your crypto assets. No third-party access. No restrictions. Just pure financial freedom.
With the wallet, you will still have access to Zap’s usual fast swaps, but we’re also introducing international payments, which will make it easier for you to send and receive money across borders in any currency. This is something that hasn’t been done in Africa at scale before.
Another major part of this wallet will be spending. Payments are a big challenge in Nigeria, and we see crypto as a way to solve that problem. So, Zap is building a virtual card, which will allow you to spend your crypto easily.
This is just the beginning. Over time, Zap plans to introduce more ecosystem products. The goal is to create a platform where people can access any financial service they need, all powered by crypto.
In the long run, we don’t just want to see Zap as just a Nigerian exchange. Our vision isn’t just “Nigeria to the future,” it’s Africa to the future. We want Zap to be the go-to crypto platform for Africans. That’s why we’re currently working on expansion into Canada, the US, Europe, and the UK.
Zap is about redefining financial independence in Africa, ensuring that people are no longer at the mercy of failing platforms and broken systems. At the heart of it all are two childhood friends who refused to let obstacles stand in their way. https://authorityngr.com/2025/03/24/how-two-childhood-friends-built-zap-nigerias-first-non-custodial-exchange/

Politics › Media Campaigns Against Tompolo, Otuaro Sponsored By Oil Bunkers - Group by Josepholome(op): 3:54pm On Mar 22, 2025 |
Media Campaigns Against Tompolo , Dennis Otuaro, and Others baseless, sponsored by oil bunkers in Niger Delta
1. We wish to categorically dissociate Government Tompolo, CEO of Tantita Security Company, Dennis Otuaro, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, and others from the baseless accusations of killing and kidnapping circulating in a viral video. These allegations are not only unfounded but are also a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputations of Tompolo, Dennis and others who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of the Niger-Delta region.
2. It is evident that the individual behind these accusations is being sponsored by oil bunkers and thieves in the Niger Delta who aim to undermine the integrity of Tompolo, Dennis, and others. 3. Since being contracted to provide security services around the nation’s oil pipelines, Tantita Security Company has successfully apprehended countless oil bunkers and crude oil thieves, significantly improving oil production and ensuring that Nigeria meets its OPEC quota.
4. Furthermore, under Dennis Otuaro's leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, the Niger Delta has witnessed a period of relative peace. The programme has played a significant role in training and retraining numerous ex-agitators, transforming them into responsible citizens who actively contribute to national development.
5. The recent media attacks and character assassination of Tompolo, Dennis Otuaro, and others come as no surprise. Their effective management of oil pipelines and the Presidential Amnesty Programme has drawn envy from forces who previously benefited from oil bunkering activities and fraudulent schemes within the amnesty programme.
6. We call on those sponsoring these character assassinations to desist immediately. It is imperative to reemphasize the commitment of Tompolo and Tantita to protecting Nigeria’s oil pipelines, as well as Dennis Otuaro's dedication to developing initiatives that enhance the lives of ex-agitators.

Politics › Fubara: Edo APC Widens Rift With National As Shaibu Challenges Tinubu by Josepholome(op): 11:04am On Mar 20, 2025 |
Tensions between Governor Monday Okpebholo’s APC-led administration and President Bola Tinubu’s government deepened Wednesday after a leaked video showed APC chieftain and former Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, openly criticizing the President and the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi SAN, over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
In the footage, Shaibu, seated beside the Secretary of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, delivers a scathing assessment of the federal government’s handling of the situation and its attempt to remove Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.
“Removing Fubara was very unlawful and unconstitutional. You can declare a state of emergency, even bring a sole administrator, but you cannot remove elected government officials. The governor still remains, that is how it is done. He will just be there ceremoniously,” Shaibu said.
The comments land at a sensitive time for Okpebholo’s government, which is already grappling with strained relations with the Presidency. This marks the second instance in recent weeks where senior figures in Edo APC have publicly challenged the President and the Attorney General.
The first confrontation erupted after Okpebholo moved to suspend elected local government chairmen across Edo State; a move that directly violated a Supreme Court ruling. The Attorney General swiftly issued a nationwide directive warning governors against such actions. Despite this, Okpebholo’s administration pressed on, triggering sharp reactions from the Presidency. APC insiders say the President and the Attorney General viewed the governor’s defiance, along with the media blitz launched by his aides to justify the illegal suspensions, as a deliberate affront.
Shaibu’s latest outburst escalates the standoff, with the former Deputy Governor privately describing the President’s actions as unlawful and the AGF’s legal advice as unconstitutional. His remarks, captured on video, raise fresh questions about Governor Okpebholo’s loyalty to the APC-led federal government and his alignment with the President’s political agenda.
Presidency sources confirmed late Wednesday that they are aware of Shaibu’s statement. However, there is no indication yet of how the President intends to respond. https://leaders.ng/2025/03/20/edo-apc-widens-rift-with-national-as-shaibu-challenges-tinubu-agf-over-fubara-crisis/

A HEARTFELT COMMENDATION TO TANTITA SECURITY SERVICES LIMITED AND HIGH CHIEF GOVERNMENT OWEIZIDE EKPEMUPOLO (TOMPOLO)! As a strong advocate for development and empowerment, I deeply commend the commissioning of the Sologha Ekpemupolo JAMB CBT Centre in Ogulagha, Delta State, by Tantita Security Services Limited. This initiative is a bold step toward transforming education in the Niger Delta and empowering our youths with the tools they need to succeed.
Providing cutting-edge technology, solar-powered infrastructure, and modern learning facilities is a clear demonstration of responsible corporate leadership. This is the kind of impact-driven investment that uplifts communities and secures a brighter future for our people.
I also use this opportunity to urge corporate institutions operating in the Niger Delta to embrace and fulfill their corporate social responsibilities (CSR). The development of our region is a collective effort, and companies benefiting from our land must contribute meaningfully to education, infrastructure, and social welfare.
I congratulate High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) and the entire Tantita Management team led the Managing Director, High Chief (Engr.) Kestin Ebimorbowei Pondi – (FNIIS, FNSE) for considering the welfare of communities in the region and taking corporate responsibility seriously.
Inspite of my reservations, this is a corporate gesture worthy of acknowledgement and commendation. I hope this initiative paves the way for more meaningful collaborations and continued development in our beloved Niger Delta.
Together, we can build a prosperous future for our people! https://www.signalng.com/jackrich-soboma-commends-tantita-tompolo-for-establishing-jamb-cbt-centre/

Politics › Courtroom Drama As Final Written Addresses Adopted In Edo Election Petition by Josepholome(op): 3:24pm On Mar 03, 2025 |
*Courtroom Drama as Final Written Addresses Adopted in Edo Election Petition* The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal convened today to adopt final written addresses in the petition filed by Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the declaration of Sen. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the 2024 governorship election.
The packed courtroom reflected the high stakes of the proceedings, with Dr. Asue Ighodalo in attendance alongside PDP Edo State Chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemin, Sen. Clifford Odia, and Hon. Friday Itulah. The APC’s delegation included Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Justice W. Kpochi, chairing the three-man panel, granted each respondent 15 minutes to adopt their final submissions, while the petitioners were allowed 30 minutes in what would prove to be a heated debate.
Counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the first respondent, adopted the electoral body’s final written address, urging the tribunal to dismiss the petition. He argued that the petitioners had not proven their case, describing the petition as incompetent for failing to request the annulment of the entire election.
Counsel for Sen. Okpebholo, the second respondent, aligned with INEC’s arguments. He contended that the petitioners had failed to tender essential documents such as Form EC25D, which records ballot paper serial numbers, relying instead on Form EC25B, which merely documents the quantity of materials received and returned.
Counsel for the APC, the third respondent, adopted the positions of the other respondents, insisting that the petitioners were required to demonstrate non-compliance polling unit by polling unit, ward by ward, and local government by local government.
Responding on behalf of Dr. Ighodalo, counsel for the petitioners argued that the petition had been successfully substantiated. He highlighted that the petitioners had challenged results from 765 polling units — a volume of votes capable of affecting the overall outcome. Citing the Supreme Court decision in Uzodinma vs. Ihedioha, he submitted that the law does not require petitioners to challenge all polling units or tender alternative results. He also pointed out that the documents tendered were certified by INEC and admitted without objection.
The petitioners’ counsel dismissed claims that polling unit agents needed to testify to the documents, noting that the disputed collation took place at ward and local government collation centres, where polling unit agents were not present. He emphasized that INEC’s IReV results had been affirmed by multiple Supreme Court decisions, including Lawal vs. Matawalle.
Concluding his submission, the petitioners’ counsel urged the tribunal to consider the cumulative impact of the irregularities across the disputed polling units, rather than dismissing the petition on technical grounds.
Outside the courthouse, Hon. Ifaluyi Isibor, a PDP chieftain, addressed the press, expressing confidence in the petitioners’ case.
“We provided witnesses, we provided documents certified by INEC themselves, we cited Supreme Court judgments in similar matters, and the respondents failed to defend the electoral heist we witnessed in Edo State. Can you imagine that not only did INEC not object to the documents we tendered, they failed to produce even a single witness to defend their case?”
“Edo people did their part by voting for us, our lawyers have done their part, now everything is in the hands of the judiciary and God. We believe they will ensure that justice is served and impunity punished,” Ifaluyi-Isibor concluded.
The tribunal reserved judgment, with a date to be communicated to the parties. https://leaders.ng/2025/03/03/edo-courtroom-drama-as-final-written-addresses-adopted-in-edo-election-petition/
