Politics › We Need Free, Fair Elections, Not National Conference – ACF by joshbam(op): 1:37am On Oct 13, 2013
The umbrella body of the North, Arewa Consultative Forum, has said that the proposed national conference will not be “a magic wand,” saying that the country did not record any achievement with the conferences held since independence.

The body said what the country lacked was the political will to realise its dreams.

In an interview with our correspondent, the National Publicity Secretary, ACF, Mr. Anthony Sani, noted that the forum was not opposed to a national dialogue but preferred free and fair elections to it.

He said there was no basis in the claim that ethno-religious and political sentiments shared by lawmakers would make them incompetent to handle the national dialogue.

Sani said, “Are you suggesting that because the proposed national dialogue will be by ethnic nationalities, the delegates will cease to be Nigerians with distorted values? Will those who will select the delegates come from the moon? And will the legislatures have no place in the order of things anymore?

“While not opposed to the dialogue, it is our considered opinions that what remains lacking in our quest to move the nation forward is consciously directed efforts to make common desires possible and then actual.

“The starting point is free and fair elections under the watch of the Independent National Electoral Commission, especially if Nigerians make consciously-directed efforts and ensure that votes count, so that the ensuing leaders will be accountable to the people and make poverty history.”

Meanwhile, the Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndi’gbo, has said, contrary to the opinion of some northerners that the conference should be held after the 2015 general elections, it should be held “immediately.”

It noted that the nation needed to discuss a myriad of national challenges that required urgent attention.

The Publicity Secretary of the body, Mr. Osita Oganah, said those, who opposed the convocation of the conference before the general elections, did so out of selfishness. He said restructuring the polity had become imperative for good governance.

He noted that where there was good federalism and power decentralisation, many politicians would not find politics lucrative anymore. He added that such a field would be left with only those who wanted to serve the country.

Oganah said, “What Nigeria needs now, most importantly, is restructuring. Since President Goodluck Jonathan has given this opportunity, we will be stupid to say that (2015) election is more important, given the state of anarchy in Nigeria now and coupled with the United States of America’s prediction that Nigeria will break up in 2015.

“It will come to pass, if we still hold election and forget about national conference. The whole idea is that we should restructure immediately and bring all the six geo-political zones to the same level; same number of states, local government and revenue allocation. Each zone will be federating units and not states anymore.”

Politics › Boko Haram Adopt New Methods Now Package IEDs In School Bags For Suicide Bombers by joshbam(op): 12:33am On Oct 13, 2013
Insurgents have now devised a new means of hiding their explosive devices to unleash terror on hapless citizens during the sallah cerebration, investigations have revealed.

The insurgents, in order to avoid suspicion especially with the public now wary of abandoned polythene bags or sacks, now package their Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in school bags for suicide bombers.

This was the observation of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Kano State after a joint operation with operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) led to the discovery and subsequent raid of a bomb making factory in Guduwawa village in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state last Tuesday.

The new approach, the JTF said, was copied from Boston in the United States where two brothers, reportedly dropped their back packs containing explosives in the midst of a crowd at a marathon race, killing three and injuring many last April.

An operative of the JTF told newsmen that the IEDs can be packaged in any type of school bag, adding that the IEDs control switch is stitched to the handle of the bag and only needs to be switched on for the explosive to be triggered.

“They will just carry it on their back and walk into any place or their target without people knowing or suspecting as they will be mistaken for students. This is a dangerous trend,” he said.
In a joint press conference, the Commander of the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kano, Brigadier General Iliaysu I. Abbah and the state’s Director of DSS, Mr. Bassey Eteng said the packaging of IEDs in school bags was the latest trend to avoid quick detection by the terrorist group.

Explaining further, Mr. Eteng said the plan of the terrorist group was to be using young persons of school-age as suicide bombers during the forthcoming Sallah and that the IEDs recovered from the factory in Guduwawa was capable of killing 1,000 persons.

“People should beware of the latest IEDs the terrorists are producing; it is packaged in a school bag for suicide bomber. They can carry it into the mosque, church and even schools. This is what happened in Boston; this trend is kind of copy-cat thing. People should be on look out,” he explained.

Shedding more light on the discovery, General Abbah said, “This is the first time we are recovering something like this. They primed the IEDs in bag unlike the previous ones”.

He also disclosed that the security operatives recovered materials the terrorists are using for the manufacturing of the school bag IEDs.

He listed the materials as three primed cylinders of IEDS; one primed explosive suicide back pack, 18 empty IED cylinders, 24 detonators, small bags of fertilizer, IED timers, cortex wires and three remote controls.

Politics › Abu Dokpesi Arrested Over Fraud by joshbam(op): 12:14pm On Oct 12, 2013
Abu Dokpesi, the look-alike younger brother of Daar Communication chairman, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi who is the man behind AFEMAI Line Transport Ltd, is in the storm. Few weeks back the businessman was arrested and detained at the Abuja Police Divisional Headquarters, opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria former head office. He was allegedly arrested in reaction to a petition in which the transport magnate, Dokpesi was alleged of stealing and selling federal government SURE P/FGN mass transport vehicles.

A source who witnessed the drama of the arrest informed that it took the intervention of the Daar Communication’s Chairman, Raymond who came to bail and providing surety for his brother.

According to available information, AFEMAI got 10 coaster buses under the FGN SURE-P mass transit scheme in January 2012.

Since the period he took delivery of the buses, it was alleged, he has not made a single payment to the intervention fund manager’s, Infrastructure Bank Plc.

A source hinted that security operatives and detectives have been on his trails for months while allegation of using charms to disengage them were also made as he could not be arrested until about three weeks ago when he was eventually tracked down.

It was gathered that the young Dokpesi, with the support of his elder brother is jostling for the local government chairmanship seat in Edo State. On this premiere, it was alleged that all the daily revenue from the transport business was deplored to procuring customized Ankara, bags of salt, rice etc. as gifts to the electorates. He however lost the election woefully.

While government has been able to retrieve eight of the buses, all efforts by the retrieval agency to effect full recovery came to a halt with an alleged influence of Dr. Raymond, who allegedly provided cover for the recovery agent, identified as Adeleye. But, he was eventually arrested at the New Haven Police Station, Enugu.

At the Enugu police command, the police were said to have established the fact that AFEMAI allegedly sold the remaining buses to another government agency for about N25million without remitting a single payment to the purse of SURE-P.

Unconfirmed information however said that AFEMAI’s boss has been boasting to who cares to listen that the fund should be regarded as government largesse and he is not prepared to pay back what he termed his own share of the national cake.

Insiders however disclosed that AFEMAI may be used as a scapegoat as the Federal Government through presidency has resolved to deal with all defaulters mercilessly.

Politics › Reps In Aso Rock On Oversight Duty by joshbam(op): 1:51am On Oct 11, 2013
BY BEN AGANDE

ABUJA—Members of the House of Representatives committee on Special duties yesterday visited the Presidential Villa to carry out oversight function on the performance of the 2013 budget.

The 20- member committee met with President Goodluck Jonathan before inspecting some on-going projects in the Villa after which they expressed satisfaction with the pace of work that are ongoing.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati who spoke with newsmen after the inspection said the visit will help bridge communication gap between the legislature and the executive arm of government.

Chairman of the committee, Nadu Karibo said the committee was impressed with the extent of work on-going at the Presidential Villa.

According to him, “what really impressed me was the extension work going on at the State House Medical Centre and I was surprised. My initial impression was that State House Medical Centre was only for the President and the State House Staff but I observed that those who are not even State House staff have access to medical facilities there; it is really impressive.

“We also observed that a new site is being developed, probably to cater for the upsurge in the people going there for treatment. I was really impressed with the fact that outsiders have access to the facilities there.

“We are very happy that the President will open his doors and allow members to come freely and do oversight, I think this is unprecedented, it is not a usual everyday thing. So I am really impressed that the President opened his doors to let us look at what we wanted to see,” he said.

He said the impression that the House of Representatives was always at loggerheads with the executive was not entirely correct because what the legislature tries to do is ensure that laws are implemented as passed.

“The problem with Nigerians is that they believe if you don’t quarrel with the executive, you are not doing your work well and any little disagreement, any little misunderstanding between both arms which is very usual in politics is often overblown. It is not out of place for the a House of Representatives to ask questions when necessary, otherwise the relationship between the executive and the legislature is very cordial.”

Asked whether the Budgetary allocation to the State House was enough considering what the committee saw concerning on going projects, the committee chairman said when the 2014 budget is brought before the House, “we will look at it again and if there is any need to increase it, we will persuade the House to increase it, if there is any need to reduce it, the House of Representatives will reduce it” he said.

Speaking on the visit, Dr Abati said “this is perhaps the very first time this kind of visit will happen and it is something to be encouraged.

If a section of the legislature is responsible for oversight even for the State House, it is very good that they will come and see what is going on there. Even the executive arm of government places a lot of emphasis on oversight and checks and balances on monitoring and evaluation” he said.

The presidential Spokesman quoted the president as saying that “both the executive and the legislature are travelling to the same destinations and that destination is to serve the people.

“It’s a question of commitment to delivering service and this shows very clearly that both the legislature and executive are working together. It was a very good, amiable meeting and interaction” he said.

Politics › Schools Merger: CAN Gives Aregbesola 7-day Ultimatum by joshbam(op): 12:49am On Oct 11, 2013
By GBENGA OLARINOYE

OSOGBO — Osun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has given a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to reverse the merger of schools and return them to their original owners.

The state government had, last week, commenced the merger of public primary and secondary schools in the state under its schools reclassification programme.

CAN in a letter addressed to the state Governor, Mr’. Rauf Aregbesola and signed by its state chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, urged Aregbesola to revert the new education policy in the interest of peace and tranquility in the state.

Also, CAN called for a reverse on the changing of single sex schools to mixed schools, saying that would help to preserve the religious character of the schools.

The body said failure of the state government to reverse to the status quo on the state education system would make it take further actions on the matter.

CAN also advised Aregbesola to take the interest of all religions into consideration while making policies, saying that he was voted into office by both Christians and Muslims.

The letter reads: “We observe that the foundation of Christian faith is being seriously threatened by some policies of the state government, especially in the education sector, which the church is strongly averse to and it is not ready to compromise.”

Reacting, to CAN threat, the Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi said: “You don’t reverse a policy that will bring up decent, brilliant and successful students in the schools.”

He appealed to CAN and other interest groups in the state to be tolerant with the state government on the new education policy in the state, stressing that “if there is any government with human feelings, Aregbesola’s government has demonstrated in many ways that Osun State is a reference point in human development index.”

Politics › Ngige Needs No Advertising – Tinubu by joshbam(op):
In spite of the heavy downpour that started at about 8a.m. till 12 noon yesterday, a mammoth crowd of the All Progressives Congress (APC) thronged the Holy Trinity Catholic Church ground in Onitsha to listen to Senator Chris Ngige, the party’s candidate in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State as the party officially commenced its campaign for the election.

It was an occasion that witnessed the assemblage of APC big wigs from across the country including the party’s national leader, Senator Bola Tinubu; Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha; Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole; his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; the party’s National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and the party’s South-east National Vice-Chairman and Director General of Ngige Campaign Organisation, Chief George Moghalu among others.

Obliviously overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd of enthusiastic supporters who thronged the arena for Ngige, Tinubu who first took the stage to begin what turned out to be a long speech by the speakers in turn of Ngige’s achievements as governor of the state for 34 months, said Ngige was like a fine product from the manufacturer’s stable that needs no advertising.

“This man, Senator Ngige, with me here, is one man with sound political pedigree, pedigree of service and passion and commitment to the welfare of his people. We looked at his antecedents before giving him to Anambra people to be their governor after the elections of November 16, and I know you people love him and he will not disappoint you.

“You call him “Onwa” – the shinning moon. He is a good product. Good wine needs no bush and I tell you that the moon will shine again,” he said.

Tinubu said with their votes for Ngige on November 16, Anambra people would have liberated themselves from the bondage of bad governance and a ruler that is misruling them.

“You are all witnesses to the fact that during his first outing as governor, teachers were paid, pensioners were paid, schools were better, roads tarred, and hospitals were renovated and upgraded. Things have nose dived and we have come to sweep away the evil,” he said.

On his part, Oshiomhole described Ngige as a man with experience who has been tested and trusted.
He said Ngige did in 18 months as governor of the state what successive governments could not do in eight years, adding that with Ngige, the state will change for the better.

He advised APC supporters to vote for him on November 16, and guard their votes jealously as a way of effecting the change they desired.

Fayemi, in his solidarity speech, described Ngige as a soldier in the vineyard of progress.

For the Imo State governor and national leader of the Ngige campaign for the November 16 polls, Okorocha, who was mesmerised by the sheer size of the crowd, he said Ngige remained the man that ended godfatherism in Anambra politics and who was ordained to rescue Anambra people from bad governance.

But for Ngige who was handed over the party flag alongside his deputy, Hon. Ralph Okeke, the moon he said, would shine again.’

According to him, he will re-enact the era of good and durable roads known as ‘Ngige standard,’ and wipe out kidnapping and armed robbery, the twin evil that had held the state prostrate since he left office; offer free education as well as upgrade hospitals where women would be treated free.

“Today in our state, there are a lot of kidnapping and robbery going on and youth unemployment as well. Was it like that when I was there,” he asked rhetorically to which the crowd yelled ‘No’.

“We are going to sweep out kidnappers, robbers and security and welfare of the people would be paramount in our list.

“The roads I built 10 years ago are still there, very durable and the ones built two years ago with so much money have been washed away.

“Who is deceiving who? I will come back again to give you people “Ngige quality roads,” he said.

Politics › Jonathan, Sambo Hospitalised by joshbam(op): 9:00pm On Oct 09, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo on Wednesday took some time off the weekly meeting of Federal Executive to undergo series of checks conducted on them from a mobile clinic by Consultants from the National Hospital, Abuja to flag off Nigeria National Stroke Prevention Programme.

Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, the Minister of Health told reporters that the President and his deputy’s Body Mass Index, height, weight, blood pressure etc were measured and checked during the exercise as a demonstration of the two leaders’ commitment to encourage Nigerians to undergo periodic checkups as way of reducing incidence of sudden deaths.

He added that the two veins that supply blood to the brain were also tested to ensure that there is no any form of disruption.

According to the Minister, President Jonathan is concerned by the rising incidents of sudden deaths resulting from ailments like diabetes, heart disease, stroke which can be prevented if discovered on time.

Under the National Stroke Prevention Programme, government will not only encourage regular medical checkups, but will also initiate series of activities aimed at creating awareness about healthy lifestyles among Nigerians.

Onyebuchi said the President has already directed that all members of the Federal Executive Council must also undergo medical checkup like he did today and must also be involved in sporting activities to keep fit. He added that the campaign will also be taken to the National Assembly, especially since lawmakers had once called upon government to do something to reduce sudden deaths following the death of some of their members in the past.

Onyebuchi said though it will cost N50, 000.00 to undergo checks similar to one undertaken by the President today, the Federal Government has put a subsidy arrangement in place that will reduce the cost to N10, 000.00 for indigent Nigerians.

The Minister who added that it is not necessary for an individual to undergo all the checks at once, said the subsidy will only be enjoyed by those recommended by Doctors to take all the tests.

Onyebuchi said the subsidy will take effect immediately. He also added that some of the basic tests can be performed at primary healthcare centers while the teaching hospitals can handle the complex ones.

Meanwhile, Onyebuchi has asked the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD to ask its members to return to work. According to him, most of the demands of the Doctors who are presently on strike have been met by the government.

The Minister listed the demands of medical personnel to include lack of training for resident doctors, removal of the Medical Director of Owerri Federal Medical Centre and nonpayment of salaries of House Officers said the National Association of Medical Doctors is not in support of the strike.

He however said it is ironic that the Doctors were complaining about lack of training when President Jonathan was the one who reactivated foreign component of training for Resident Doctors after many years of lack of such opportunity. He said 50 Doctors benefitted from the foreign training in 2012 and the funds for the training for 2013 have been included in the budget of teaching hospitals to decentralize the process.

In the same vein, Onyebuchi said government has asked the doctors to formally write for the removal of the Owerri Medical Centre Medical Director through the Board of the hospital.

He also attributed the delay in the payment of salaries of House Officers to teething problems of the Integrated Payroll System being implemented across the civil service.

But he said the problem is already being tackled and some of the affected House Officers are already receiving their salaries. “We believe that being reasonable people, they should go back to work,” said the Minister.

Politics › APC An Igbo Party — Ngige •Dismisses Alleged Curse By Obi Of Onitsha by joshbam(op): 5:34pm On Oct 09, 2013
Contrary to the widespread perception of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a Yoruba party, the APC candidate for the November 16 Anambra governorship election, Senator Chris Ngige, has described the party as an Igbo party.

Ngige said this while reacting to last night’s story by News Express on the curse placed on him and APC by the Onitsha monarch, Igwe Alfed Achebe, for holding Ngige’s rally in the town on the day of the famous Ofala festival.

Ngige, in a statement this afternoon by his Campaign Organisation also insisted that he couldn’t possibly have been cursed by Igwe Achebe as he is “a man who respects the Igbo tradition and culture and holds it in high esteem and will be the last person to assault a system he is so proud of.”

Though the News Express story was based on video evidence, the Ngige Campaign Organisation in a statement put out by his Media Assistant, Mr. Igboeli Arinze, said: “We urge the public and truth loving people of Anambra State to ignore these stories making the rounds that our revered father, the Obi of Onitsha, placed curses on either the party or the candidate of the party as seen in some of the dailies yesterday. As I speak to you today, the relationship we enjoy with the Obi of Onitsha and members of his cabinet is impeccable and only those who are running scared of losing the upcoming gubernatorial seat will seek to misrepresent facts.

“The APC as an Igbo party believes that the culture of any people is their strength and will therefore not do anything that will undermine our culture as Igbos. The Ofala festival of any ancient kingdom is an age long heritage of such a people and we respect it as such.

“Concerning our holding of the flag off yesterday, we wish to make it known that the candidate of the APC, Senator Chris Ngige is a man who respects the Igbo tradition and culture and holds it in high esteem and will be the last person to assault a system he is so proud of. Therefore anybody speculating that the flag off was indeed an affront to either the authority of the Obi of Onitsha or the culture of the people of Onitsha is simply mischievous and ought not to be taken seriously by anybody. Do you think that the senator and other well meaning members of the APC who are majorly title holders in their communities would attempt to defy the Obi of Onitsha? Would the senator have organized the rally without informing the Obi of Onitsha?

“We believe that the report was simply manufactured to water down the earth shaking effects of the flag off which sent a message to the APGA government that their time is up and that change has come. It is simply a panicky reaction to the towering status of Senator Ngige, who’s rally yesterday witnessed a huge turnout that defied the heavy rainfall yesterday, despite the bottleneck situation created by the present day administration.”

Arinze also condemned the statement credited to the Governor of Anambra State concerning the rally describing it as empty rants. According to him:

“The APC never stormed Onitsha, it was neither a blitzreig nor a military operation, therefore the talk of APC storming Onitsha need not arise. We challenge the governor and his party to engage us on a campaign of issues; on security, on education, on infrastructure, on religious harmony in the state, on sports development, on water supply, on the state of Awka as a capital city. We know that they would lose all the same, but we feel that it would be more honourable if they toed this path rather than this puerile style of politics, We advise Obi, Obiano and their co-travelers to stop propagating fallacies in an attempt to hoodwink the good people of Anambra to vote for them.

“The people are wiser and they would vote for Ngige who will bring sustainable development to the state come November 16- our date with change.”

Politics › Hanga’s Faction Of CPC Merges With PDM by joshbam(op):
THE Senator Rufa’i Hanga-led faction of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), on Tuesday in Abuja, formally merged with the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), saying that members of the faction were fed up with the impunity of the faction loyal to former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

The Buhari faction has already dissolved into the new mega party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hanga, who led state chairmen and secretaries of the faction to the merger, argued that even though the faction was hopeful that it would a get a favourable verdict in court in the case seeking to retrieve the mandate which he said was stolen by the Buhari group, they decided to merge with PDM in order to participate fully in the ongoing political process.

The former CPC National Chairman said: “The pace of political events in Nigeria is moving at the speed of light. We do not want to play into the hands of the same undemocratic forces whose actions compelled us to seek redress in court in the first place by allowing political developments to pass us by while they organise to foist another fraudulent agenda on the nation we cherish so much.

“Doing so will be a great disservice to our fatherland. In view of this, we have consulted widely with our members in every chapter, ward, local government and state across the country and obtained the mandate of our followers to move en masse in alliance with the Peoples Democratic Movememt (PDM) beginning from right now.”

Hanga explained that the CPC decided to join PDM because PDM has “a track record of internal democracy and organisational discipline,” which he said many of them could attest to having been members of PDM in the past, adding that this was not the case with other parties.

He observed that PDM has also been around for a long time and as a newly registered political party, “it provides us with the opportunity to start from a clean slate and from a level playing field in politics having experienced impunity and dictatorship at the highest level in the Congress for Progressive Change.”

The former party boss also noted that the former CPC members believed in the PDM manifesto and shared in its commitment to the unity and indivisibility of the country “as well as its aspiration to open up economic opportunities for all Nigerians through job creation for ordinary Nigerians and the creation of large Nigerian middle class.”

Hanga expressed confidence in PDM’s leadership, “its commitment to do justice to all as well as its pledge to treat all party members equally without discrimination of any kind.

“There is no other party in Nigeria today which abides by these values and there is no other party which is likely to do so as far as we know,” he stated.

He advised party members to return to their states and begin the registration as genuine members of the PDM.

Also speaking at the occasion, the pioneer National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Mr. Dennis Aghanya, regretted that even though they had followed Buhari from his time as a member of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to CPC, the party leader disappointed them by engaging in unilateral actions which did not favour it members.

Politics › Madalla Bombing: Kabiru Sokoto Files N300m Suit Against FG by joshbam(op): 8:21am On Oct 08, 2013
The alleged mastermind of the Christmas day bomb blast that killed about 44 persons and wounded 75 others at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, in 2011, Kabiru Umar, a.k.a Kabiru Sokoto, yesterday, instituted a N300 million suit against the Federal Government.

In an application he filed before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, Sokoto, who is answering to a two-count terrorism charge, urged the court to award the money to him as exemplary and general damages against the Federal Government over alleged torture and beatings he suffered in the hands of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

He made the application shortly after his team of lawyers, led by Mr. Sheriff Okoh, urged the trial court to discharge and acquit the accused person for want of incriminating evidence linking him to the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

It was the contention of the alleged Boko Haram kingpin that the government failed to establish a prima-facie terrorism charge capable of warranting his conviction.

“We urge this court, based on facts, to discharge and acquit the accused person for want of evidence and inability of the prosecution to establish a prima-facie terrorism charge against him.

“The accused in count two is being accused of having information about terrorism attack at St Theresa Catholic church, contrary to section 7(1) of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2001, an allegation he has denied.

“For a person to be guilty under this section, there must be a ‘Mensrea’ which goes to knowledge and believe that the offence will be committed or has been committed.

“The only context in which the term knowing can be construed under the terrorism prevention Act is actual knowledge and the constructive knowledge.”

Politics › ‘NNPC Not Owing FAAC N2.3trn’ by joshbam(op): 12:00am On Oct 08, 2013
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has refuted a statement credited to Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, that it owes the Federation Accounts N2.3 trillion.

The NNPC Acting Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Tumini Green, said in a statement yesterday that the corporation was dismayed at what he described as the increasing unwarranted and unfounded accusations against it by otherwise informed persons in the polity.

Green described Oshiomhole’s statement as an unfortunate attack, adding that “it is part of a sustained campaign against the corporation and its leadership in recent times, which aims at distracting it from the dogged pursuit of the transformation of the oil and gas industry for the general good of the nation”.

She said: “We wish to state without any equivocation that we do not owe the Federation Accounts any money as at today, taking into account outstanding subsidies and other associated costs of operations and loses. We have consistently paid all monies due to the FA into its Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, account as we receive them.”

According to her, not all revenues collected by NNPC are paid directly into the accounts of FA with the CBN; some are paid into the accounts of the relevant government agencies, like the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, with the CBN. But eventually all these payments are credited to the accounts of the FAAC.

Green said another important issue which was not taken into account by critics reeling out figures without cross-checking, was the outstanding debts owed NNPC by the Federal Government, especially from subsidy.

She said: “Nigerians may wish to recall that in the wake of January 2012 subsidy saga, there was no budgetary provision for subsidy to NNPC and again in 2013 there was no budgetary provision for subsidy to the corporation.

“NNPC has not received one kobo from the Federal Government in the name of fuel subsidy. Yet, Nigerians also know that NNPC has been the major supplier of petroleum products to the nation during this period and before.

“Indeed, for the whole period that the subsidy saga continued, NNPC was the sole supplier of PMS across the country, and we never failed to ensure that every nook and corner of Nigeria was wet with PMS.”

Crime › 779 Criminals Arrested In Ogun by joshbam(op): 3:19pm On Oct 07, 2013
Police in Ogun State said at the weekend that 779 suspected armed robbers, cultists and kidnappers had been arrested in the last four months.

The police also recovered about 98 arms, 976 ammunition as well as 94 vehicles stolen from the state and other neighbouring states from June till date.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this to journalists after returning from an operation where a patrol team intercepted four suspected pipeline vandals at Omu-Ijebu in Odogbolu Local Government Area.

The PPRO explained that the total value of property recovered from suspected criminals between June and September was N44,817,800.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, also gave names of the suspected petroleum pipeline vandals as Omololu Oseyemi, Ogunsola Adekunle, Adewale Eyienle and Lekan Emiloju.

The police image maker said items recovered from the suspected vandals included a Volkswagen Golf car marked Lagos KTU 49 BE, a pumping machine, sledge hammer, drilling machines, long hose being used to siphon the product, hand gloves, cutlass and shovels.

He said: “The suspects were intercepted ostensibly on their way to carry out vandalism operation. We are not going to leave any stone unturned in checking crimes and criminalities in the state.”

Adejobi added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikhemefuna Okoye, had ordered the suspected vandals to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, adding that they should be charged to court after the investigation had been completed.

A breakdown of the achievements of the command between June and September shows that 106 armed robbery suspects were arrested while 32 suspected bandits were killed.

The PPRO said 17 rape suspects and 39 cult members were nabbed while three people were arrested for alleged kidnapping during the period under review.

He said 206 suspects were charged to court out of which 189 suspects were prosecuted with the conviction of 24 criminals.

Adejobi appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and other security agencies in the state by volunteering necessary information to check criminals.

He said: “The police command and other security agencies cannot handle the task of security alone. We need the support and cooperation of the people in tracking and unmasking criminal elements in the society.”

Politics › We’ll Show The World The ‘one-term Agreement’ Document Signed By Jonathan – New by joshbam(op): 4:51pm On Oct 06, 2013
The New Peoples Democratic Party has threatened to make public the document signed by President Goodluck Jonathan, in which he allegedly agreed to serve only one term in office as the President of the country.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Mr. Chukwuemeka Eze, told our correspondent on the telephone in Abuja on Friday, that the agreement would be made public as soon as the President declared his intention to run for a second term.

Jonathan had, during the Presidential Media Chat last Sunday, challenged the New PDP to prove that he agreed to a one-term tenure by publishing the agreement.

Eze said, “When he decides to contest and the party directs accordingly, all the facts relating to his signing any document or making any promise that he would serve one single tenure would then come to the fore.”

Eze said the President would one day realise that he was surrounded by enemies, adding that by that time, it would be too late for the President to correct his mistakes.

He said, “This crisis (in the PDP) is orchestrated by some people in Jonathan’s cabinet and some of his aides. Most of these people apart from being opportunists don’t know what it is to serve the people.

“Instead, their pockets are what matter to them and in order to achieve their selfish agenda, they are ready to do anything to block anybody with sound ideas on how to improve our country.

“Sadly, Mr. President gives them much room to operate and they have succeeded in ruining his plans for the country and succeeded in creating more enemies for Mr. President than friends.

“I don’t want to mention names here but most of the people with President Jonathan are more of his enemies than his friends. He will eventually realise this when it is very late.”

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak however insisted that there was no one-term pact in existence.

According to him, the New PDP may forge a document just to prove a point.

He said, “We have debunked this claim. We challenged them eight months ago and we are still challenging them. Even if it means forging it, let them bring it for us to see.”

Politics › 2015: Northern Group Blasts Baraje, G7 Govs by joshbam(op): 10:44pm On Oct 05, 2013
A pan Northern group under the auspices of Arewa People’s Patriotic Front, APPFRONT, has alleged that the Kawu Baraje-led new Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and G7 governors want to destabilise Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna, National chairman and Secretary of the group, Mr. Mordecai Sunday Ibrahim and Sam Otitolaiye, respectively called on President Goodluck Jonathan and his vice, Namadi Sambo to remain calm and focus, advising them not to be distracted by disgruntled elements who are out to destroy their Transformation Agenda.

The group also warned the Baraje group not to throw the nation into deep crisis like that of 1966, noting that the G7 Governors are out of desperation in search of soft landing to avoid being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for their alleged corrupt practices.

The group said: “On the barrage of attacks on the office and the person of President Goodluck Jonathan over his yet to be announced ambition for 2015, it is obvious that majority of those launching these attacks are not democrats while the rest are only out to seek undue relevance.”

Politics › Bomb Scare At PDP National Secretariat by joshbam(op): 10:22pm On Oct 05, 2013
By Chuks Okocha

There was pandemonium Friday at the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja over alleged threats by an unknown group to bomb the place.

THISDAY gathered that top party officials hurriedly left the secretariat and some directors asked their staff to take the weekend off.

Senior officials of the Party, who reportedly left the secretariat on the basis of the security reports included the National Auditor, the departmental directors, among others.

Checks by anxious journalists revealed that a report was relayed to the party secretariat, Thursday night, disclosing a verified report of a credible threat to attack the secretariat starting from yesterday.

A senior official of the party was said to have received the report and relayed it to the necessary quarters within the leadership.

According to investigations, the Security report was said to have been leaked to the general Staff, who reacted hysterically.

However, both the party Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the new National Secretary of the party, Prof. Adewale Oladipo were not in the office as at the time of incident.

When THISDAY contacted the National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, he said he was not aware of what happened as he did not at the secretariat. "I am not aware," he said.

A top security official of the party confirmed the development, disclosing that "the threat is real and we are all aware of the situation."

Another source said that they noticed suspicious movement at the Mosque at about 9 pm on Thursday night and that they alerted the Police, who eventually came to the party secretariat with two Hilux vans.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at the secretariat, while sand bags were being mounted at the main entrance to the Secretariat as at the press time.

The militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has forced more than 1,000 teachers to flee from various areas in the northern part of Nigeria.

The group has also burnt 50 schools and forced 60 others to close in the northern part of the country.

An international human rights organisation, Amnesty International, which stated these on Friday in a report titled, ‘Keep away from schools,’ said that at least 70 teachers and 100 schoolchildren had been killed.

It said, “Education is under attack in northern Nigeria. Since the beginning of 2012, according to Amnesty International’s research, at least 70 teachers and over 100 schoolchildren and students have been killed or wounded.

“At least 50 schools have either been burnt or seriously damaged and more than 60 others have been forced to close. Thousands of children have been forced out of schools across communities in Yobe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Borno states.”

The group stated that many teachers had been forced to flee for their safety to other states.

“The highest number of attacks was in Borno State in the North-East. According to the Nigeria Teachers’ Union, more than 1,000 teachers have been forced to flee from areas in the North since 2012,” it said.

It said that because of the attacks, most schools in Bama, Baga, Jajeri, Umarari Garnam, Mai Malari, Mungono and Gamboru in Borno State were forced to close between February 2012 and June 2013.

The group called on the Federal Government to protect schools in the region, investigate the attacks and bring those responsible to justice.

AI added, “The Nigerian government is obliged, as part of its obligation under Article 13 of the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, to protect everybody’s right to education and to take measures that prevent third parties from interfering with the enjoyment of the right.”

It noted that the attack on schools had increased since the declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.

According to the group, since the beginning of 2013, attacks had been more brutal.

It said in some attacks, teachers were killed on school premises in full view of children, adding that in others, school buildings were set on fire.

Politics › LASUTH Doctors Battling Hard To Save Feyi Agagu by joshbam(op): 4:51pm On Oct 04, 2013
Feyi Agagu being moved from Emergency ward to another ward in LASUTH, this morning. Photo: Simon AtebaDoctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, are battling to save the life of Feyi Agagu, the son of the late governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, who was involved in a plane crash on Thursday morning as he and others were taking his father’s corpse for burial.

P.M.NEWS undercover reporter observed as Feyi was earlier today being moved from the surgical emergency ward in LASUTH to the more comfortable Bola Ahmed Tinubu ward where he would have a better chance of survival.

Doctors who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity all confirmed that Agagu’s son would receive better medical attention at the new ward which boasts of more medical personnel and state-of-the-art equipment.

“There are more staff there, more modern equipment and they will be able to monitor him every minute. He has a better chance of survival there,” a doctor said pleading not to be quoted because she is not authorised to speak with reporters.

Our undercover reporter observed that Feyi was not unconscious and could recognise family members and friends who were in the hospital today.

But he was weak, did not speak and seemed to be under pains. He tried painfully to make a sign to his relatives but his hand came down almost immediately.

Feyi was among the lucky seven survivors who are receiving treatment in three hospitals in Lagos.

Five of those who are receiving treatment are in LASUTH while one is at the Airforce medical centre and the other is in Gbagada General Hospital, said Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who visited the survivors on Friday morning.

Idris said he was satisfied with the level of attention the patients were receiving.

He said one of the survivors had a surgery on Thursday night and three were doing well and one is in critical condition.

He did not say whether it was Agagu’s son or another survivor he was referring to.

Our correspondent observed that family members, friends and sympathisers stormed the hospital but were not allowed to see the survivors.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, said at a press conference in Lagos, southwestern Nigeria, that the crashed plane had a subsisting Air Operators Certificate, AOC, and had a current Certificate of Airworthiness, known as (C of A) which was supposed to expire on 22 October, 2013.

Adamu Ahmed Abdullahi, the Director of Consumer of Protection at NCAA, who represented the Director General of the agency, Fola Akinkuotu, said Associated Aviation Limited last operated their aircraft on 30 August before it crashed yesterday, killing 13 people.

He said the airline only conducts chartered operations.

Abdullahi said the Brazilian made Embraer 120 aircraft marked 5N-BJY could carry up to 30 passengers and was registered in Nigeria on 22 May 2007.

He declined to take questions from journalists, claiming that NCAA is also under investigation by the Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB.

At the time of this report, AIB was yet to speak with journalists about the investigation it is conducting.
