Prince adebayo: I already told my friends that Yaya toure would win it before the award ceremony although i still tried to support Mikel Obi,am a man city fan and i know how much impact Yaya made last year,as a midfielder given the priviledge to roam around the field to any position he wishes unlike stiff and solid Mikel Obi at chelsea who scores just every every 75 games,Yaya scored a lot of goals including some excellent free kicks too.
Yaya toure clearly deserves the award and he will forever be a serious contender for the award until he retires,i really like the guy,i have one of his videos on my phone and i was very impressed wishing a Nigerian too could play like this in the premier league,the Nigerian players disappointed me,most of them are now lazy in their respective clubs even Moses is now a flop at Liverpool,it is well sha.GOD BLESS NIGERIA!!!

emmysam2: African Footballer of the Year is an Individual award, Not a ''Team'' award. Much of what Mikel won was based on team. Individually, can you say Mikel has achieved much last year? I even think Enyeama achieved much more than Mikel. Yaya has been outstanding individually for Man city and his country.
It was unfortunate that Okocha couldnt win it then when Samuel Eto was doing equally very well in Europe.
There are many criteria being used in these selections. Sometimes it might just boil down to international acceptability. They probably gave it to Eto then based on this.
As in this case, can Mikel really be accepted by the world when placed side by side with Europe's best? Certainly Not.
Imagine Mikel as African best and standing beside C. Ronaldo, Ribery and Messi.
But Yaya Toure can possibly pass and be a better representative. (My Opinion though)

If its by what the team won while they were playing for their team, then Emenike should be Africa`s best. Its been long a Nigerian player won this award, i want our own boy to win, but Mikel`s performances does not deserve the award when you have top performers like Toure. Mikel is a slow developer as a player, he needs to up his game. facts needs to accepted here. I pray he take peoples sincere advise not insincere ones deceiving him that his performances and play is world class when it can not even win him Africa`s best.

Haba, even a blind man can see clearly that Yaya is more resourceful and a better player than Mikel. Yaya is indispensible in Mancity, whereas Chelsea can do without Mikel.

I keep hearing people talking about how many trophies did Yaya won last year compared to what Mikel won. African Footballer of the year is an individual award, not a team award. Individually, if we want to compare them, Yaya is way ahead of Mikel. Is it in terms of market value?, Is it interms of team and national countribution?, Is it in terms of goals scored and assists made? Any coach will definitely ceratinly pick Yaya Toure ahead of Mikel Obi if he has to choose between the two.
Imagine both of them in the same team in Chelsea alongside Ramires. I can bet the money that Yaya will definitely bench both Ramires and Mikel.
Mikel should up his game and do more this year.

solbase10: Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi is hoping to be crowned Africa's best player at tonight's GLO-CAF Awards ceremony at the prestigious Eko Hotel in Lagos,he said on Wednesday.

The Chelsea midfielder is vying for the prestigious award with the Ivorian pair of Yaya Toure, of English Premier League rivals Manchester City, and Didier Drogba, from Turkish club Galatasaray.

"It is an honour to be selected and nominated for the award. I am looking forward to winning it for my country," Mikel, who has twice been voted Africa's best young player, told AFP by phone from London.

The 26-year-old helped Nigeria win a third Africa Cup of Nations in February last year and also qualify for a fifth World Cup finals in November.

He also won a first-ever UEFA Europa League title for his club side.

Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amuneke and Victor Ikpeba have previously won the CAF player of the year award but former Arsenal ace Nwankwo Kanu was the last Nigeria star to clinch it in 1999.

Mikel said he plans a whistle-stop visit to Lagos, for this evening's awards organized by the continent's highest football authority (CAF) and bankrolled by one of Africa's leading indigenous telecoms operators, Globacom. "I am coming for the CAF awards. I will be flown in and out of Nigeria by the Chelsea jet. I will arrive on the awards day and return immediately after," Mikel disclosed.

Chelsea, currently third in the English Premier League behind Arsenal and Manchester City, are away to Hull City on Saturday.

During tonight's ceremony, winners in 11 categories, voted for by African coaches and captains of national teams, will be unveiled.

These include the African Footballer of the Year, the African Player of The Year (based in Africa), National Team of the Year, Club of the Year, and Coach of the Year. Other categories are the Most Promising Talent, Referee of the Year, Legend of the Year, Fair Play Award, Platinum Award and Africa’s Finest XI. of character and skill he displayed each time he played for both club and country.

African leaders, past and present football icons will converge to witness the coronation of Africa's best football assets. Globacom has been sponsoring the annual CAF Awards since 2005.
