It’s our turn to produce next Ooni – Giesi family

The Giesi Ruling House in Ile Ife, has said it is now the turn of the family to produce the next Ooni to succeed Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who joined his ancestors on July 28.

Leaders of the ruling house led by Princes Adelowo Ogunleye; Ropo Ogunwusi and Prof. Moses Awogbade said this at a press conference addressed at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre, Osogbo on Monday.
Ogunleye, who read the prepared speech of the family, said it was now the turn of the ruling house based on the government declaration on the Ooni chieftaincy title in 1977.
He said another memorandum issued by the old Oyo State Government dated September 16th 1980 on the appointment of the Ooni, provided for four ruling houses: Osinkola, Ogboru, Giesi and Lafogido in that order.
He said, ” We want to seize this opportunity to tell the whole world especially the people of Ile Ife and government of the State of Osun ably headed by our amiable and indefatigable governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, that the normal rotation to the succession to the throne of Ooni which is in vogue in Ile Ife presently, has ascertained to the fact that it is now the turn of the Giesi Ruling House, Moore Ile Fe, to produce the next Ooni of Ife by the special grace of God almighty.
“It is on record as indicated by the government declaration captioned ‘ The Ooni of Ife Chieftaincy Declaration’ reference no CB141/7/1/540 dated 22nd August, 1977 addressed to the then Executive Secretary of Oranmiyan Local Government, Ile Ife from the office of Military Governor of Oyo State of Nigeria and duly signed by the then Secretary to the Military Government and Head of Service.
“Paragraph a in the letter state’s that the order of rotation among the ruling houses should be as follows: ( 1) Osinkola (2) Ogboru (3) Giesi (4) Lafogido.
“We want all and sundry to please note that the Osinkola House produced our father, Oba Adesoji Aderemi, who ruled for 50 years in Ile Ife and was immediately succeeded by Oba Okunade Sijuwade from Ogboru House who has just transited. It then follows that the next ruling house to produce the next Ooni of Ife should automatically and normally come from Giesi Ruling House, as the two government approved rotational arrangements confirm.”

Ogunwusi said there was no division among the Giesi ruling house, saying the family had designed forms for contestants to know if truly they are from the family. He added that the form would also indicate whether the contestants had paternal or maternal relationship.

According to him, if there are no credible contestants to the throne from those from the paternal side, those from the maternal side could be considered.

Hinting on the likely criteria the prince to be presented must have, he said Ife had never fielded an illiterate or a semi literate person as the Ooni. He added that the person must be influential and should not be a monarch who would be going about cap in hand begging for money.

Celebrities › Veteran Comedian, Baba Sala, Discharged From Ibadan Hospital by juman(op): 8:34pm On Aug 24, 2015
Ace Yoruba comedian, Chief Moses Adejumo Olaiya popularly known as Baba Sala who was hospitalized, over his deteriorating health, at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, penultimate Monday, has been discharged.

This disclosure was made yesterday by the Head, Public Relations Unit, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Mr. Deji Bobade while speaking with Vanguard in a telephone interview.
According to Bobade, the octogenarian had fully recovered and was perfectly alright before being discharged.

He said, “Yes, Baba Sala has been discharged. We discharged him after giving him necessary medical care. He was on admission at the teaching hospital for a week. If he was not alright, we could not have discharged him.”

Pa Adejumo who is reputed for his rib-cracking comedy in his hey days, was rushed to the teaching hospital by his son, Mr. Emmanuel Adejumo Olaiya, even as anxiety mounted about the health status of the comedian.

Many people from various parts of the country started calling to ascertain what happened to the comedian. But, his son, repeatedly told newsmen that his father was responding to treatment.
He had told Vanguard then, “Baba Sala felt uncomfortable on Saturday and he was taken to Adewale Hospital in Ilesa and he was better. But, on Sunday, he felt sick again and was returned to the hospital.

The doctor said he would need oxygen to treat him properly. It was then our sister who is a matron in UCH, decided that we should bring him to Ibadan since the doctors’ strike had ended. There is no serious cause of his discomfort but I think it is old age. The symptom is common to old people,” he added.

Baba Sala who was rushed to the UCH, Ibadan, from Ilesa, Osun State, penultimate Monday, over age-related illness, it was learnt was asked to come for a follow-up treatment as an outpatient.

Recall that over the last two weeks, the social media was awashed with reports that there was serious concern about the health of the foremost Yoruba comedian, Baba Sala, but in a swift reaction, his son, Emmanuel Moses Olaiya quickly clarified that his father was alive and even demanded for pounded yam last Tuesday.

“The first thing my father did after he was resuscitated was to ask for pounded yam,”Emmanuel told newsmen.

Also recall that the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr. Deji Bobade, had dispelled rumours of Baba Sala’s deteriorating health, affirming that the comedian was alive and responding to treatment.

Politics › FG Wastes Funds On Kerosene Subsidy by juman(op): 11:44am On Aug 21, 2015
Petroleum products’ marketers across the country have continued to ignore the directive of the Federal Government on kerosene price as they sell the product between N110 and N160 against the regulated price of N50 per litre.

The Federal Government is paying N58.65 as subsidy for every litre of kerosene being sold in Nigeria, according to investigation by our correspondents.

Figures obtained from the Petroleum Pricing Regulatory Agency on Thursday showed that the Expected Open Market Price or actual landing cost of kerosene plus margins stood at N108.65 per litre.

This, however, was against the product’s regulated price of N50 per litre as stipulated by the government. This price is hardly adhered to by many filling stations.

One of our correspondents observed that most petrol stations in Abuja were not dispensing kerosene on Thursday, particularly those in the city centre. The filling stations in remote towns sold the product above the regulated N50 per litre.

It was the same story in Lagos, where few stations were found to be selling the product at N160 per litre.

At Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory, an obscure filling station, which had no name and was located in Byazhim, sold the product at N90 per litre.

Some residents told our correspondent, that the management of the filling station hardly sold the commodity in small quantities.

It was learnt that petrol stations such as Oando, Conoil and MRS in Nyanya, Kubwa and Dutse never sold the product at N50 per litre.

Our correspondent however, did not see any of them dispensing kerosene on Thursday when he visited the filling stations.

“We hardly buy kerosene for N50 per litre,” a resident of Kubwa, Greg Tasie, said.

He added, “The only petrol station around here that sells at that price is the NNPC mega-station along the Kubwa Expressway. And most times, before you get there, they must have sold it out completely to people coming with hundreds of jerrycans to buy kerosene.”

While some stations in Lagos did not have kerosene to sell due to limited supply from the NNPC, the product was sold above N100 in most filling stations, with some stations selling at N160 per litre when one of our correspondents visited them on Thursday.

A top official of a major petroleum downstream player, with filling stations in parts of the country, told The PUNCH that the NNPC was supplying kerosene to them at N49.50 per litre.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the price at which their stations were selling the product to the public varied between N105 and N107 per litre.

Commenting on importation of the product, the source said, “The NNPC does not bring in kerosene often. And when they bring it, it takes about six weeks before it gets to your turn. It is not something every marketer gets every now and then. Sometimes a marketer might not get for three months.

“Kerosene is not on the priority list like Premium Motor Spirit (petrol); its importation is just once in a while. If they bring in two vessels, which are about 70 metric tonnes, about 20 companies will be waiting to share it and this gives room for bribery and corruption.”

The Manager, External Affairs at Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc, Mr. Akin Fatunke, said, “They (NNPC) have been selling to us at N40.90 and we sell to the public at the regulated price of N50 per litre.

“Before now, we never had the product. As much as they give the product to us, we sell at N50 per litre at our stations. They sell limited quantity to us, not the demand that we expect. We sell what is given to us.”

The PPPRA’s pricing template for kerosene, based on the average Platt’s prices for August 18, 2015, shows that the actual cost of the product before being imported into Nigeria is N82.25 per litre, while its landing cost is put at N93.16 per litre.

A combination of costs for retailers, transporters, dealers, bridging, marine and administration charge came to N15.49 per litre. When this is added to the landing cost, an EOMP of N108.65 per litre is arrived at.

When contacted on the matter, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, told one of our correspondents that there was still subsidy on kerosene.

“The President has not taken a decision on that. The new GMD has not taken a decision on that either,” he said.
