Berger to Ajah is currently trending on Twitter and it all started with a tweet from @OmogeDami who accused @UcheDandyMUFC of raping her friend @B_moree_ who left Berger to Ajah to spend the night with him. Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability or is below the legal age of consent. Note, the word coercion. “Our abductors handed us over to a woman who specialized in the hotel business, we were made to do prostitution in the hotel, and we received more than 15 men on a daily basis. In the end, the woman that owned the hotel will give us N500.00 daily." These are the words of Glory, Idowu and Posi three teenage girls who were raped, made to undergo the act of lesbianism, videotaped and posted on social media has narrated how they were kidnapped on their way from the court and made to engage in prostitution in a village in Ogun State. New Telegraph reports. Now compare this situation to the Berger to Ajah story. In 2016 alone, there were 150 reported cases of sexual and physical abuse were recorded in Lagos State alone. Rape is under-reported in our society. The stigma and credibility of the accuser is always a barrier to going to the police and pursuing legal action. Anyone that has been raped or was almost a victim of rape knows better than to put themselves in a situation that will lead to rape. The fear never leaves you, I have female friends who are afraid to be in the same room alone with any man because of the trauma they went through after they were raped as a child. Now compare this situation to the circumstances @B_moree_ claimed she was raped. Uche Daniel, the accused while explaining his own side of the story said You cannot consent to spending the night with a guy who is not your partner and after having sex with him, claiming he raped you. Why would you even go and spend the night there in the first place? Why would you expose yourself like that in the first place? When I was in secondary school, my father always warned me about going to a male friend's house. My father would categorically tell you that, you cannot go there and think he won't make moves to have sex with you. Don't be delusional. You cannot force yourself on a man and when it goes wrong, you now start screaming rape and feminism. Women should stop using that word lightly because the real victims would never come to tweet about it. Beger to Ajah is not rape. Berger to Ajah is not feminism. Don't get it twisted. https://araba.com.ng/2018/06/berger-to-ajah-is-not-a-case-of-rape/

You have to ensure that your home is a safe haven for your baby, both newborns and toddlers. It's really hard to tell where your baby will get to once he starts crawling or walking, this the reason why you must baby proof. The first step to baby proofing a house is to find the time to do it. You have to find a way to create that time to baby proof each room. It's better you do it yourself because you can't entrust the help with that task. Here is all you need to know about baby proofing the house. Doors Use doorstops and door holders to protect babies' tiny fingers. Electrical outlets, cords, and appliances Put safety plugs or outlet covers over unused outlets or block it with furniture. Hide electrical cords behind furniture. Keep Iron, toasters, and other appliances unplugged and out of reach. Preventing falls Never leave your baby alone on beds or sofas or in any other spot she could fall from. Use window guards, window stops, and safety netting on windows. Install safety gates at the bottom and top of your stairs. Fire prevention Install a smoke detector Check batteries in smoke detectors monthly. Constantly review your fire escape route Car Keep children in rear-facing car seat; until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. Install car seat properly, in rear-facing position in middle of backseat. Changing table Use the safety strap and don't leave your baby unattended. Keep toiletries out of your baby's reach but within yours. Crib Don't use soft, fluffy bedding such as pillows under sleeping or napping babies. When baby gets up on hands and knees, remove mobiles and hanging toys. When baby pulls up, put mattress in lowest position. Don't leave toys in crib when your baby is sleeping. No Go Areas Keep knives, breakables, heavy pots, and other dangerous items locked up or out of reach. Control access to unsafe areas with safety gates and door locks Secure the refrigerator with the key, every refrigerator comes with one Don't use tablecloths or placemats — babies can pull them and anything on them down. Furniture Anchor a flat-screen TV with safety straps or mount it on a wall so it can't fall on your baby. Keep heavy items that can topple on low, sturdy furniture, pushed back as far as possible. Poison-proofing Move cleaning agents, medicines, hand sanitizer, toiletries, laundry soap, and other potentially toxic items out of reach or lock them up. Toilet Install a toilet-seat lock to prevent drowning. Toys The safest toys: Are securely put together and in good condition. Have no buttons, eyes, beads, ribbons, or other pieces a baby could pull off and choke on. Are not too heavy (if a toy would harm a baby if it fell on him, it's too heavy). Have no strings or cords longer than 12 inches. Are appropriate for a baby's age and physical skills, toy comes with age appropriate descriptions. Can't be hung (or anything else) around a baby's neck. Water safety Don't leave babies unattended even for a moment in or near a swimming pool, jacuzzi or other water. Erect fencing around pools at least 4 feet high with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Don't leave even small amounts of water, cleaning solutions, or other liquids in buckets or other containers unattended round the house. Window safety Cut off or tie up dangling cords on drapes and blinds. Mark sliding doors and other expanses of glass with colourful stickers. Keep your baby away from open windows and balcony. https://araba.com.ng

Theirs was a wedding forged in Westeros. Yes, my favourite couple in the world after Meghan and Harry officially tied the knot today after years of dating. Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones stars got married Saturday in Aberdeen, Scotland. CNN reports that Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage and other co-stars were in attendance. They announced their engagement in September in The Times of London. Daily Mail also added that Rose, 31, was a vision as she headed into the chapel on the arm of her father clad in a billowing white gown with a lace bodice and intricately beaded veil that she secured upon her tousled auburn hair. https://araba.com.ng/2018/06/kit-harington-and-rose-leslie-tie-the-know-in-scotland/

TED and TEDX talks are influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity. The slogan ideas worth spreading rings true of every topic highlighted be TED speakers. I have been motivated, encouraged, discouraged by the tens of TED talks I have listened to in my lifetime. I usually stream TED talks at midnight so that I can hear the distinctive sound and ideas that expand my thinking. As a Nigerian woman, I am keen to always hunt for TED talks by Nigerian women who are doing extraordinary things in their own little or large corners of the world and here is a list of five talks that have inspired me. Chimamanda Adichie’s The danger of a single story Here, Adichie tells the story of how she found her true cultural voice and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. She highlighted how the western world sees Africa and how this is totally blinding the moral and political ethos of these western countries. This TED talk made me proud of my Agege upbringing and all the Shakespearean quotes I have been memorising since I was five. Taiye Selasi’s Don’t ask where I’m from, ask where I’m a local This TED talk made me proud of my Agege upbringing and all the Shakespearean quotes I have been memorising since I was five. Taiye Selasi’s Don’t ask where I’m from, ask where I’m a local British-American writer and photographer of Nigerian and Ghanaian origin tries to make sense of our origin and challenges us to see our identity differently. She aptly describes herself as multi-local instead of multinational because these experiences that occur in our lifetime is what defines our identity. Chioma Omeruah’s Don’t be a waste The first time I saw Chi Girl on stage I said “who is she.” Her story of making failure a thing of beauty and finding your passion somehow makes me realise that you don’t always have to know, just don’t be a waste and that is all you ever need in the world. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s How to help Africa? Do business there Former Finance Minister of Nigeria and former Director of World Bank talks about an Africa you should invest in. In one TED talk, she managed to reconstruct the image of Africa and ushered in an Africa where opportunity awaits. Yvonne Orji’s The Wait is sexy Yvonne Orji is a Nigerian-American actress best known for her role as Molly in the HBO series Insecure. As a Nigerian woman, we can all relate with the concept of keeping your virginity till marriage and taming your sexual desires. Raised by strict Nigerian parents, Yvonne who grew up in the abroad highlights the ups of keeping yourself and encourages everyone to join the sexy wait. The interesting part of this talk is the fact that you wouldn’t expect that standpoint from a woman who grew up in America where sexual immorality has societal approval. https://araba.com.ng/2018/06/five-times-nigerian-women-gave-fantastic-ted-talks/

Founder, Nigeria Democratic Congress Party (NDCP) and presidential aspirant for the 2019 election, Dr. Johnson Edosomwan, has said that he would create over seven million jobs for Nigerian youths each year if elected as the president of Nigeria come 2019. Speaking during an exclusive interview with THISDAY in Lagos recently, the Edo State-born businessman and philanthropist, said these jobs would be created in multidimensional facets, adding that there would be job creation in manufacturing, healthcare, education, infrastructure, roads and so forth. “We would create at least seven million jobs per year. And also we want to create multidimensional industry, we want to move away from just relying on oil as the only source we use for our revenue, we want to manufacture. We want to start manufacturing our own cars and motorcycles here in Nigeria. We have Nigerians that have the power and training to do that. The reason why we don’t have industries here is because investors are running away due to lack of electricity. We want to create solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectricity and even nuclear energy, if we can,” he noted. Edosomwan who claimed that the problems that Nigeria is facing at the moment, are problems, he has solved all through his life, noted, “I have done that in large corporations, organisations and countries and in the course of these I have solved all sorts of problems and I can do the same if I am elected the president of Nigeria.” “I am a pioneer in the whole issue of leadership and so I know how to lead and manage people. But I also know how to follow; I know how to build teams and how to work with diverse group of people. We are a very diverse country with people from different tribes and religions and I have the ability to bring these various groups of people together to work for the nation,” he added. Edosomwan who said he would be working with a six point agenda, that would afford opportunities for more jobs in the country, noted that the lack of electricity has been the major drawback in the economic growth of the nation. “The reason we don’t have industries here is because investors are running away due to lack of electricity. We want to create solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectricity and even nuclear energy, if we can. All of these options are in the open onto the table.” “Right now in every facet of Nigeria, you only have 15 per cent productivity, 85 per cent of the productivity is wasted because they lack electricity to do their work. And then we don’t even have a good telephone system, so how can you really create a good economy? The roads are not good, so we want high speed rail. I was going from Ikeja to the airport and it took us two and half hours sweating, a journey that would have take about five minutes. So those are the issues that we want to deal with. The average Nigerians are suffering and we want to turn their suffering to success,” he noted. According to a 2010 study by a UK magazine, the average smartphone has 18 times more potentially harmful bacteria on it than the flusher on the toilet in the average public restroom. Yup, you heard right. As women we like to act as clean freaks so I can imagine how disappointed you are right now. So how did your phone become so dirty? Our smartphones are hot spots for germs not only because we constantly clutch at them with our filthy hands, but because we pass them around to all our friends who also touch it with dirty hands. We never clean them, we store them in warm places, pouch, phone cover, 360 protector, you name it and we cannot stop using our phones especially while doing the business in the toilet. The average smartphone carries 11,020 germs per square inch — and in some tests, one in six randomly selected phones had fecal matter on it. Some microbiologists also warn that between 20 and 30 percent of infectious diseases can be transferred from fingertip to phone glass, where the microbes can survive on your phone for several days at a time. Your phone picks up germs from your mouth, nose, and ears when you use it. You also probably place it on dirty surfaces, like your desk at work (which contains 79,000 germs per square inch on your computer alone), your germ-ridden kitchen counter, your purse (a third of purses have been found to carry E. coli bacteria) and occasionally somewhere in your bathroom. Plus how hot phones get on their own — and how we usually keep them someplace warm, like our pants pocket, our hands, or next to our face — and there you go, ripe conditions for crazy germ growth. While our phones are covered in germs, most of them are not actually all that dangerous to adults with fully functioning immune systems. A University of Surrey study found that most of the germs on the phones were harmless. To clean your phone, power your phone down every other day, take it out of its case, and then wipe down the phone and the case with the wipes. Then wash your hands frequently, this will help reduce the number of germs you carry around. Also avoid passing your phone around indiscriminately. There you go, Ms. Dirty Phone, your Smartphone just got cleaner. http://araba.com.ng/2018/01/news-flash-smartphone-filthiest-thing-handbag/

Nairaland makes me sad sometimes, just imagine people's comments. Sofoluwe died when I was in final year, I remember how we woke up one day to news of our VCs death. I still remember the candlelight procession. So five years later, an undergraduate who was probably still in secondary school will twerk to his statue and you think the school will let her go scotfree, its insane. If it was her father's statue, will she twerk to it and I agree with statue of liberty view though, all those saying rubbish, let them go and twerk to statue of liberty in America and see how they will be deported back to their villages. Wanna decorate your apartment on a budget? Here are seven ways to make your apartment more cozier without breaking the bank. Wall Pictures Create the same effect using your own photos by arranging them in a creative way that’s unique to your style. Floating Hangers Not only does this add extra dimension to your room, but also, it just might force you to choose your outfit for the following day and save you time in the morning! Wine Bottles Using recycled wine bottles to store the plethora of today’s arm candy bracelets is one of the best ideas for decorating your apartment. Mini Wardrobe Rack Try this brilliant idea if you have limited closet space. Instead of folding pants in a drawer where you can’t see them in their full glory, buy a rack and hooks to create your own display. Shoe Holder For Toiletries An over-the-door holder can hold more than just shoes. If your bathroom is limited when it comes to storage space, here’s a way to keep toiletries, hair dryers, brushes, and more organized. Mirror as a Tray You can find vintage mirrors, which make the perfect trays. Keep books, candles, makeup, and lotions looking sophisticated with this presentation. Photos and Laundry Clips Strategically hanging minicalendars— or your own photos from social media sites— from laundry clips is an inexpensive way to add a vintage touch to your space. https://roomiesconnect.com/7-creative-ways-to-decorate-your-apartment-on-a-budget/ |

In light of Seyi Law and Kemi Olunloyo spat on Tiwa, I personally tink every parent should be educated on Childhood Obesity. I am not passing any judgement here, I just think there should be a spotlight on Childhood obesity. Happy reading. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects children and teenagers. Everyone has a body shape that is just right for him or her changes but sometimes we can store excessive body fat. A healthy weight trajectory is where height and weight change proportionally together as children develop. When children are off the healthy weight trajectory, their weight gain is disproportionate to their change in height, meaning the gain of body fat that can negatively impact his or her healthy development and health overall. If a child or adult stores too much fat they can be classified as overweight or obese. A sign of childhood obesity is a weight well above the average for a child’s height and age. If left unchecked, research shows that these children are more likely to become obese adults and thus more likely to experience compromised health due to chronic disease, contributing to growing personal and health care costs. Which children are at risk of becoming overweight or obese? Most childhood unhealthy weights are caused by children eating too much and not exercising enough. A complex and interacting system of factors contributes to increasing rates of overweight and obesity – biological, behavioural, social, psychological, technological, environmental, economic and cultural – operating at all levels from the individual to the family to society as a whole. Examples of these factors include more sedentary “screen time” for children, lack of access to physical activity opportunities, the marketing of foods and beverages high in fat, sugar and/or sodium to children and increased fast-food availability and increasing portion sizes. Societal trends have dramatically altered the nature of play and the way children interact with their environment. These trends have included a significant decrease in outdoor recreation, sleep and healthy eating opportunities and now promote an increased dependence on electronic media and sedentary activities. These changes in our society and the environments we live have encouraged, what is referred to as “obesogenic environments”. Obesogenic environments are, “the sum of influences that the surroundings, opportunities, or conditions of life have on promoting obesity in individuals or populations.” Simply put, obesogenic environments are places that encourage people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough. These are areas where high fat, high calorie food is often plentiful and the physical environment is not conducive to physical activity opportunities. Factors in the environment that promote the overconsumption of energy (food) include the easy availability of a wide variety of good-tasting, inexpensive, energy-dense foods in large portions. Other environmental factors tend to reduce total energy expenditure by reducing physical activity. Over time, all of these environmental forces produce gradual weight gain in the population. Weight gain happens when energy ingested (food and drink) is more than energy burned off (physical activity). A very small number of problems with unhealthy weights in childhood are related to uncommon genetic diseases. These complex and interacting systems are further complicated by a wide variety of policy decisions made in a number of different sectors that influence childhood obesity. Children at risk of becoming overweight or obese include children who: consume food and drinks that are high in sugar and fat on a regular basis such as fast food, candy, baked goods, and ESPECIALLY pop and other sugar-sweetened beverages are not physically active each day watch a lot of TV and play a lothttp://childhoodobesityfoundation.ca/what-is-childhood-obesity/ of video games, activities that don’t burn calories (sedentary time) live in an environment where healthy eating and physical activity are not encouraged eat to help deal with stress or social problems come from a family of overweight people where genetics may be a factor, especially if healthy eating and physical activity are not a priority in the family come from a low-income family who do not have the resources or time to make healthy eating and active living a priority are exposed to the aggressive marketing of energy-dense foods and beverages to children and families have a lack of information about sound approaches to nutrition have a lack of access, availability and affordability to healthy foods have a genetic disease or hormone disorder such as Prader-Willi syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome http://childhoodobesityfoundation.ca/what-is-childhood-obesity/ |

Dirty dishes, unwanted guests, loud music one room over, a long overdue check for their share of rent, heavy noise from slammed doors — the grievances you can rack up against a roommate may seem endless. But there is always a right way to deal with difficult roommates rather than loosing your cool and making everyone suffer. Resist the urge to retaliate In any conflict, retaliation makes the other person angry and intensifies whatever the original problem was. Rather than trying to get back at a roomie who’s wronged you, have a conversation about what the problem is. Address the issue sooner than later. Timing is everything, the longer you wait to let your roommate know something they’re doing is seriously bugging you, the more resentment you’ll feel toward them — and the more ominous a confrontation will seem. So address the issue sooner rather than later. Let your roommate know firsthand that something is bothering you. Completing your profile before browsing for roomies on Roomies Connect is the best way to weed out dishonest roommates. Say it right. Describe the facts, express how you feel, ask for what you want, be mindful. Don’t accuse your roommate of numerous wrongs when you’re confronting one issue. Try using a non-aggressive, gentle tone of voice during the process that doesn’t make your roomie feel like they’re being attacked. Putting them on the defensive only raises the tension between you. So watch what you say and say it right. Repeat if necessary. You may need to reiterate your request more than once during the first confrontation. So say it over and over again, don’t nag, let your roommate know that you are serious about your stance. This will most likely push him or her to take the necessary action. Adjust the intensity of your requests accordingly. Giving others the benefit of the doubt is often a good way to go about building relationships. But if gentleness isn’t helping you get your point across — or your roommate refuses to adapt her behavior in a way that makes your living situation bearable — increase the firmness of how you ask for what you want. There you have it, five ways of dealing with a difficult roommate. You will find more interesting articles like this on https://roomiesconnect.com |

Gallows Road, a movie that compellingly shows the powerful freedom that comes with forgiving one’s enemy in the face of racism is now showing in Cinemas across Nigeria. John Venter, CEO of CMD Entertainment Africa while commenting on the movie said “We truly believe that this movie carries a powerful message of forgiveness and reconciliation our country so desperately needs in a time such as this.” “Gallows Road” does a terrific job showing that forgiveness is possible even in the most difficult situations. It also clearly demonstrates that a person can redeem bad decisions by making good ones. The film’s themes include faith, family, and forgiveness while also dealing with deep sorrow, anger, racism, revenge, alcoholism, and entitlement. It also reminds us that each of us has challenges in life, and periodically we need support or assistance. Maybe it’s the little girl made to hawk on the streets, or the wife whose husband abuses her, or even the angry teenager who lacks a proper role model. Gallows Road features a star-studded cast that includes: Kevin Sorbo (God’s Not Dead), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Bill McAdams Jr. (Hallow Man), Marcus M. Mauldin (Prison Break), Mary Jean Bentley (Sweet Home Alabama), Brent Anderson (Dallas) and Frank Mosley (The Other Side Of Paradise). The movie is now showing in Cinemas across Nigeria.

NIGERIA boxing chiefs have claimed Anthony Joshua was keen to represent them at Beijing 2008 but was told ‘he wasn’t good enough’. AJ was born in Watford to Nigerian parents in 1989 and spent some of his early years in the West African country. He returned to Hertfordshire halfway through Year 7 and went on to win Olympic gold for Britain in 2012. But ahead of last night’s heavyweight blockbuster against Wladimir Klitschko in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley, it was claimed he wanted to represent the country of his mum and dad. Nigerian boxing legend Jeremiah Okorodudu, speaking at the National Stadium in Lagos, told SunSport: “Joshua was in Nigeria once to connect with his roots and I think that was in 2007. “He wanted a chance to compete for trials ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics qualifiers, but he was denied and not given a chance." Finding an affordable and comfortable property to rent in Lagos can be a nightmare. Sometimes the stress of checking one property after the other can be overwhelming especially when you don’t have a partner to go house hunting with. When you eventually find the right one, you will be in a hurry to move in forgetting to check and double check the agreement and the apartment’s nook and crannies. If not properly executed, house hunting can definitely go wrong without the right person to tag along. Here are three tips on how to reduce the stress of house hunting in Lagos. Get a House Hunting Partner Never go alone, there is a limit to the decisions you can make on spot. When you have a partner or your friends and family join you, you can all properly screen the apartment for flaws and high points. This helps you to make the best decision. A good example is checking out an apartment with the seemingly perfect furnishing and finishing, however, a closer look will reveal that the wallpapers won’t stay on for more than six months. These are minor details that can go unnoticed except you have a bird’s eye view. These are flaws your partner will be quick to point out in case you miss it. Work with Trustworthy Real Estate Agents You have to work with real estate agents you can trust. Your real estate agent’s opinion really holds weight when it comes to selecting the right apartment to stay in. So patiently choose a real estate agent with the right experience and resources to find your dream apartment. When looking for real estate agents, look out for firms that people can vouch for. Don’t choose roadside agents who lack credibility. Be Open Minded House hunting in Lagos can be completely confusing if you are not open minded. Be open minded about what you see and how far you can compromise your desire for the perfect apartment. If you want a serviced apartment in Victoria Island and your real estate agent points you to one in Lekki. Don’t dismiss it, check it out, it could be way better than the options you explored in Victoria Island. The finishing can be superb, just like you imagined. So don’t limit yourself. You can get way better than you imagined. https://roomiesconnect.com/how-to-reduce-the-stress-of-house-hunting-in-lagos/

While many startup mistakes can be rectified easily, a poor choice of business location is almost impossible to correct. Your choice of office space can define your business because it not only has a huge impact on employee productivity but also on brand perception. You therefore need to have a clear picture of your requirement for the business location before you start shopping for one. You need to be sure about what you must have, what you would like to have and what you cannot tolerate based on your budget. Here are five points to consider when choosing an office space for your business: 1. Demographics: Who are your customers or clients and how important is their proximity to your business location? Should you be a retailer or service provider, this is very critical to the success of your business. For other types of businesses, this is a detail that can be overlooked. Wisely choose communities that will provide a healthy environment for your business. Ensure the population of the community matches the customer profile to support your business. An office space in a prime location like Victoria Island, will definitely speak volumes about your business and would encourage your clients to visit you. What about your employees? What skills do you require and are people with those talents available? Does your business location have the capacity to serve their needs? Is there accommodation with affordable price range? Will your employees find appropriate recreational opportunities that will increase their productivity? 2. Ambiance, Accessibility and Parking Facility: Pay attention to the ambiance and how accessible your office space is to everyone using it – clients, employees and vendors. Are there lifts and well-positioned stairwells. How spacious is the office space? How about the surrounding buildings? What will your clients and employees see when they look outside the windows? A beautiful office space without a car park is of no use especially when you plan on welcoming a lot of clients daily. It will be embarrassing for clients to park by the roadside when coming to your office. 3. Proximity to Other Businesses and Services: Take a look at other businesses and services within the vicinity. How far is your office space from your target market? Proximity impacts the amount of time you spend on the road when going to see your clients and the amount of time they spend on the road when visiting you. Ensure that you choose a prime location that is surrounded by your target market. 4. Infrastructure and Utilities: Ensure the building has the necessary infrastructure to support your business needs. Make sure the office space has the adequate facilities to meet your present and future needs. How about utilities such as electricity, air conditioning, internet service etc? Are key services such as janitorial, reception, and administrative being catered for? Do your employees have access to a well-equipped break room where they can have meals? Are all these provided or do you need to make provision for same yourself? 5. Image and History of the Business Location: What does your business address say about your company? Consider the location of the office space, how developed is the area? What is that particular location known for? Do businesses thrive in that community or not? How does the vicinity sell your business? These are some of the pertinent questions you ought to ask when choosing a business location. http://gilgalproperties.com/2017/04/25/officespacebusinesslocation/ |
I really don't know what to make of this. The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria and recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all but essential travel to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, and Yobe states because the security situation in northeast Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable. Very poor transportation infrastructure also makes it difficult for the U.S. Mission to provide consular services in these states. All U.S. citizens should have evacuation plans that do not solely rely on U.S. government assistance. Due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks, U.S. citizens should also avoid all but essential travel to: Bayelsa, Delta, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. This replaces the Travel Warning dated February 8, 2017. Boko Haram, an extremist group based in the northeast, has targeted churches, schools, mosques, government installations, educational institutions, and entertainment venues in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Taraba, the Federal Capital Territory, and Yobe states. Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians have been displaced as a result of violence in the north. Islamic State West Africa, which is now a distinct group from Boko Haram, is present in Nigeria, and may seek to attack locations frequented by westerners including major population centers. U.S. citizens should be vigilant at public gatherings and locations frequented by foreigners. Markets, hotels, restaurants, bars, and places of worship may become targets for terrorist attacks. Exercise extreme caution throughout the country due to the threat of indiscriminate violence. Travel to the Gulf of Guinea should also be avoided because of the threat of piracy. U.S. Mission personnel are subject to restrictions when traveling in Nigeria, with the exception of local areas of Abuja and Lagos, and may be subject to other constraints as security conditions warrant. https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/nigeria-travel-warning.html |
Food means a lot for us Nigerians and it features in many events from religious to entertainment. In as much as we love food, we have failed in practicing proper feeding habits as food abuse is a norm for Nigerians. Perhaps, due to ignorance of proper feeding habits, we as a Nation have forgotten how to eat; we are caught up in many activities, eating is often relegated to the least. Forgetting that what we consume has an impact on our longevity. It’s not uncommon to find persons gulping a cup of tea en route work or chewing/swallowing while walking or talking. These approaches to eating are quite disturbing but more disturbing are the quantity of food we consume per meal. The picture below is not uncommon among Nigerians. There are various spectrum on the band of food abuse but for the purpose of this article, I am interested in focusing on the rapacious appetite of Nigerians. Aside from the fact that I profess Nutrition, I have earned the right to discuss this topic because I have being a compulsive eater who uses food to assert control whenever life seems overwhelming to me, I also use food whenever I am not content with the moment as it is. So far, I have been working towards healing these tendencies. And there is progress as I am more conscious of my relationship with food. As a Nation we need to realize the real purpose of food, to remember that it’s firstly for nourishment then pleasure. We need to reassess how we use food and walk toward imploring it properly. And, the first step would be to watch our intentions before eating to identify why we decide to nibble when we do and be conscious of how we do it. More importantly the portion sizes of our meals. This is pertinent because Nigerians are voracious eaters. Unfortunately, when it comes to nourishing the body, we need just a little. An average man of 5 feet and 6 inches tall who works in a building with a flight of stairs and weights about 70kg will need just about 2000kcal, this would roughly amount to 2 cups of vegetables e.g. greens, spinach, ugu, oha, a cup of vegetable B e.g. carrots, peas, cucumber e.t.c, ½ of a medium sized pineapple, 2 glass of milk (skimmed) about 4 cubes of sugar and 5 cups of rice for a whole day; a cup is equivalent to an empty tin of peak milk. These can be distributed throughout the day to meet the required dietary needs. Scientists show that eating less could actually be a path towards longevity. It was discovered that the two biomarkers i.e indicators of longevity — low fasting insulin level and body temperature were found in rodents whose caloric intake was restricted and it’s been speculated to be so in humans as well. As Nigerians we tend to obtain our calories from one meal type and could get all these calories from a big bowl of eba and vegetable soup with offal and meat and most times we eat with a bottle of soda making our meals more concentrated than it should be. As a result of this types of meals and portion sizes, we eat more than is required in a day and this is the reason for the skyrocketing rates of obesity and obesity related illness and deaths in our society. It’s not too late to take a detour and begin to eat for the right reasons and to show prudence at the table because science has now shown that as with everything, when it comes to food, less is actually more.
