The All Progress Congress in Ekiti State has faulted the local government elections held in the state on Saturday, saying it was fraudulent. The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement that there was apathy for the election across the state, adding that it was proof that people of the state had rejected the governor and his party, the PDP. “To cover their shame in most of the empty polling units, PDP members and Fayose’s political appointees engaged in multiple thumb-printing to give a false impression of a large turn-out of voters,” Olatunbosun said. The APC, which withdrew from the election after complaining that the process was comprised, said the people behaved honourably by staying away from the election, which was boycotted by all political parties except the PDP. Morgan State University is mourning a student following a Thursday night crash in Prince Georges County. Maryland State Police say that around 10:30pm that night, officers arrived at the scene of a fatal head-on collision that claimed the life of 20-year-old Adedire “Dire” Ososanya. State troopers at the scene confirmed that both vehicles were driving in opposite directions in the same area before the driver of a Cadillac DeVille lost control and collided with Ososanya’s Nissan Altima. Ososanya attended Morgan State, the university confirmed. On Friday, as many students were preparing to listen to commencement speeches and receive their diplomas, others were finding out about the loss of a fellow student. The university issued the following statement in the wake of the tragedy, “On a day when so many of our students are celebrating their graduation and the start of a new chapter in their lives, we at Morgan State University find ourselves in a state of shock, saddened by the loss of this member of our family. “Adedire was well liked by his fellow students, who elected him as Mr. Junior (class). He was a marketing major here at Morgan and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He had, in fact, completed nearly all of his coursework toward graduation and for his life to be cut short when he was so close to achieving that which he had worked so hard for is heart-wrenching. Senate orders ‘2016 model’ SUVs for 109 lawmakers The leadership of the Senate has placed orders for the purchase of 109 Sport Utility Vans commonly called jeeps in the Nigerian parlance, for its members to carry out their oversight functions. It has also allegedly turned down a request by some chairmen of the 65 committees recently inaugurated by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to change their preferred vehicles which hitherto had been Prado Jeeps already to Land Cruisers. Investigations by our correspondent on Saturday showed that each of the vehicles would cost N16m. They were said to have been ordered before the constitution of the 65 committees. Tagged “operational vehicles”, the SUVs, according to a member of the management staff, who could not be quoted because of his status, would be delivered to each of the lawmakers in the first quarter of next year. The vehicles, he said would be formally handed over to the senators after their four-year tenure after paying 30 percent of the cost. The source said, “The jeeps are not official vehicles because the senators, in line with the Federal Government policy on monetisation, would be paid money for vehicles, accommodation and other things, so they are not entitled to official vehicles and accommodation. “They, however, needed operational vehicles to carry out their oversight functions. Each of the 109 senators is either a chairman or vice-chairman of the senate committees, hence all of them would have a jeep each” Our correspondent, however, learnt that some of the committee chairmen, recently met with the leadership of the Senate and requested that their own Prado jeep be upgraded to Land Cruiser Jeeps. The leadership, according to a senator from the South West geopolitical zone who craved anonymity, told some of the chairmen that made the request that the budget of the red chamber could not accommodate their demands... Age: 40 Birthday: June 18 Town: Agassa LGA: Okene Education: Accounting, Ahmadu Bello University Public service careerRMAFC (revenue officer, accountant) Political career: New kid on the block Campaign promise: “To move Kogi in a new direction” Core base: Kogi central Social media: 3,833 likes on Facebook Hobbies: football, boxing, reading, travelling Yahaya Bello on Saturday won the governorship election of Kogi state after the formality of a supplementary election. Bello had inherited the 240,861 votes polled by Abubakar Audu in the November 21 poll, which was declared inconclusive by INEC shortly before Audu died. Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the incumbent, came second with 199,514 votes. A supplementary election then took place in 91 polling units in 19 local government areas on Saturday and Bello polled an additional 6885 to Wada’s 5363. Final score: APC 247,742, PDP 204,877. The constitutional crisis is yet to be resolved — there are a couple of cases going to court. Audu’s running mate, James Faleke, believes he should be declared the inheritor of Audu’s votes having run on a joint ticket with him. Wada also wants to be declared governor-elect, maintaining that Audu had died with his votes. Bello is, therefore, Kogi’s governor-elect, pending the legal battles. But how much do you really know about the 40-year-old graduate of accounting? Read More >>> Juz Rumours Blog |
