It seems like you dont know basis economics Deman and supply is determined by the market. If you close your market, the demand still exist but not to supply from outside. Have you seen what Trump is doing to ford. Produce outside and we will tariff you badly. jln115: Supply and Demand bro.... If you could import for much cheaper then why would you produce locally it in the first place?? Because you are some Saint that wants to create jobs? Get real bro!!
Besides your example of America is flawed as the cars America imports are generally more expensive than the ones they produce(also America produces and sells far far more cars than it imports) , and the reason they import it is because of demand.... People that can afford it would rather want a Mercedes or BMW than a Ford or Chev. Secondly your assumption that America produces enough is subjective.... But what I can tell you is they are not meeting demand hence why the US automotive industry is still growing.
And yes I know what the WTO rules are.
You are not grasping the concept.... But let me make it simple for you.... If you import textiles because they are cheap, the fewer you are going to produce, if you produce more and more textiles then the fewer you are going to import.... But you are not going to produce so much textile to exceed demand and on top of that import textiles because they are cheaper as you claim Nigeria is doing.... You are either going to do on or another and find a balance on how much you are importing and how fast you are importing vs how much you are producing which is economically the most practical.
I agree with the bolded 100% I wasn't arguing that Fact....but your own example proves exactly my point, as when China flooded the European market with cheap solar panels people bought them instead of locally produced ones that in turn caused local production to slump(causing joblosses and what not) .... They didn't continue to produce the same amount as before because that you be stup1d!!
The fact that you said Nigeria produces textiles that exceeds demand and then on top of that imports textiles because they are cheaper proved you don't know simple supply vs demand..... Yet you calling me dumb?
If you said Nigeria has the capacity to produce enough textiles to meet local demand then at least you would of had an argument(albeit without evidence) but they are certainly not producing textiles that exceed demand and on top of that importing it as well again you are not grasping In every maket, there are two segment of people The producers and the importers. you cant satisfy both of them at the same time. Whichever way, every economy must protect it local production. but you cant eliminate import To keep prices stable, supply is always more than demand in a certain ratio and when that ratio falls prices fall. This is the real world of economics forget your equilibrium textbook knowledge. |

mtisTheQubit: Look man,the best way African economies will survive is to concentrate where they are good at..take an example of Nigeria, its good that you are building a refinery to add value to the oil you export ..thats good..or the tech hubs ya starting in lagos..but you cant just go on producing everything just like China does .. Another example would be Ghana..if only they would add value to their cocoa beans.. Ghana already add value to it cocoa for local demand and export |

chrisooblog: Just30 has a point. a lot of business people in Nigeria before the oil price crash/pre-buhari were always importing things on the cheap because our central bank usually provided forex i.e at "official government rates" lower than the actual value of naira to dollar in the blackmarket. rather than setup industries that cost arm and a leg they would rather go for cheaper imports because free oil money. Like rice for example nigeria just couple of years back was one of the highest importers of rice in WA. then the current govt rightly said hold up we can grow this stuff here why do we need to waste scarce forex importing what we can produce. have we met all local demand for rice? no but we have definitely saved precious forex we were just gifting the thais and indians. The textile industry you mentioned was already booming before the economic slump of the 80s and 90s. in the north of Nigeria particularly kano and kaduna there was a booming textile industrial space. it has been picking up of recent. can you imagine today Chinese and Indians are producing Kente at low quality and flooding the Ghanaian market with their cheap product... all because some few Ghanaian stole designs and went to give to them. |

jln115: But we don't have the skill or infastructure to do so as yet. yes we have the skills to do so putting the infrastructure in place is now one of the easiest thing But all we do here is to give ourselves excuses upon excuses The most difficult thing now is to gain market share. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by Just30: 1:42pm On Mar 10, 2020 |
jln115: Think logically for a second please!!! Why would anybody produce textiles in the first place, if it was cheaper for everybody to import it from China?? If Nigeria produced enough textiles then they wouldnt import it, if indeed textiles are cheaper to import then nobody would produce it,
It is impossible for Nigeria to locally produce enough textiles that meets(or as you say exceeds) demand yet then to import even more textiles from China because its cheaper..... What you are saying is economically(and mathematically) impossible,
Same goes for metals
And how would citizens kill local production? No sane person is going to buy the same product for twice the price just because its produced in their own country... It's up to government to ensure that local production is cheap enough(through government support, infastructure and other policies) as well as ensuring that import products from countries like China are tariffed as to ensure fairness within the markets Because local production create jobs and supply the market. hence wealth creation. So if American produce enough cars, they wont import cars? is this your logical thinking? Have you read the WTO rules on trade before? So because textiles are cheaper to produce in China, America does not produce textiles? What im saying is, global trade policies have made it possible for countries that produce at a cheaper cost to flood the market of others. For this reason, other countries have developed ways to limit the importation of those materials. What did Europe do when China was flooding their market with solar panels? They banned the importation of solar panels for a period and went ahead to place trade tarrifs to protect their producers. who taught you dumb kids economic at all. cant believe this , too many microeconomics think bigger |

Look we dont need to reinvent the wheel..you dont need to create another Facebook coz you feel africa needs its own facebook...You dont need to manufacture crappy cars in the name of Africanization when we all know that most of stuff is from china..get my point That is why unemployment will continue to remain high in Kenya That is why Kenya will continue to remain a country that is not important in Global trade. That is why Kenya will continue to remain a consuming economy whereby everything is owned by foreigners. A dangerous game |

mtisTheQubit: Yes but the world has changed..Time for reinventing the wheel is over..Ever heard of global trade..my suggestion is to learn tech an apply it...its worked for china an india an slowly is working in some african countries (like kenya ) so now manufacturing is reinventing the wheel ? smh African economies were set up to serve their European colonial powers and this hasn't changed. but at least some are breaking those hard to be broken chains and are gaining momuntum. And Kenya is a worse performing country in manufacturing |

jln115: have you ever heard of import tariffs and shipping costs?
Yes I agree some imports are cheaper but most aren't and are imported due to either that it's not produced in said country and/or local supply can't meet local demand.
Nigeria imports metals and textiles because they don't produce enough of them as simple as that.
If they did import simply to kill local production as you said then not only is that fvcked up but its economical suicide!! actually, Nigeria produce enough textiles way above demand but texiles from China and India are cheaper. hence importation same goes for metals yes IT IS ECONOMIC SUicide when your own citizens seek to kill local production. This is one of the reasons why textile importation was banned in Nigeria |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by Just30: 12:11pm On Mar 10, 2020 |
jln115: If they did then they wouldn't import it in the first place!!
Secondly its not just machinery, its also metals and textiles used in production have you heard convenience and price advantage before? Nigeria makes a lot of metals and textiles The importation is just a means to kill local production by flooding the market with cheaper ones |

jln115: China makes up 28% of Nigerias imports.... Most of it is machines, metals and textiles that Nigeria doesn't produce...... So ofcourse it going to effect Nigerian production and thus in turn effect the Nigerian economy.
Also why will export and inport trade(or lack there of) effect only the Chinese economy and not its biggest importers..... You are literally contradicting your self: because most of it importers already have substitutes for the things they import. A delay in the supply of machinery only delays a project which is yet to come on stream. |

jln115: Don't try to be smart bro there is certainly a major impact on import and export markets already......which in turn has an impact on financial markets i dont need to try to be smart, i am already. China will be hit because production is not going on and neither is export. Nigeria will not be hit by import trade not coming from China. Nigeria's local production will gain big because of the absence of Chinese competition in the market. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by Just30: 8:35am On Mar 10, 2020 |
jln115: Actually Nigerias economy will be the most effected as it is the biggest importer of Chinese goods in Africa that is not the case import and export trade is not what will cause an economy to be affected. Countries with debt burdens that are unpayable will feel the greatest hit. The squeeze is in the financial market. |

Funny story coming out of China
In what is likely the most epic story to come out of China as a result of the coronavirus so far, locked down students in Wuhan have found a creative way to avoid doing their homework while schools are closed.
While schools have been suspended, teachers have been using an app called DingTalk to assign their students online lessons and homework, despite the lockdown.
After the app was introduced, however, students who were happy to be on lockdown beforehand grew annoyed with having to do work, according to the London Review of Books.
So they engineered their own solution and decided to take action. Students figured out eventually that if they had enough users spam the app with one star ratings, they could get it kicked off of the app store, which would then in turn prevent them from having to do homework.
As a result, "thousands of reviews" flooded into and DingTalk saw its app rating fall from 4.9 to 1.4 overnight.
According to the report, "the app has had to beg for mercy" on social media, stating: ‘I’m only five years old myself, please don’t kill me.’
Not much out of the country has given us hope since the coronavirus outbreak began, but this story should possibly give future generations optimism about young Chinese citizens' eagerness to band together and overthrow authority.
And to the teachers, it's already bad enough the kids are suffering through what is likely going to be one of the most impactful pandemics of modern times. Maybe you can cut them a break on the book reports for the time being. |

Kenya is the most diversified economy, more connected to the rest of the world....Kenya will never be hit as hard as a country that is relying solely on one product and one market will you shut up there kenya is not connected to any rest of the world your economy is a piece of sh_it If you think im lying, check your maritime traffic this morning. Kenya will be hit the hardest because of it debt exposure |
