If Saudi Arabia wasted their Crude Oil Boom like us, they will be in recession now. We wasted ours and drove ourselves into more debt.

Within $50+, NOI borrowed to pay Salaries. We were already in a mess, no matter how you try to blame President Buhari.

Yes, true. That government wasted it. Corruption and the pressure from the ROTIMI AMAECHI led governors forum led to the squandering of the Excess Crude Account (ECA). However, that is in the past. We are talking about now. Nigeria would have avoided a recession still if those blunders did not compound the fall in oil prices, especially the policy of violence in the Niger Delta region.

These companies operate with FX reserves. The so called rise in Unemployment and companies moving out are the result of us saving our reserves.

We do not have enough to sustain Subsidy. Hon. Ibe Kachikwu got the Foreign importers to share the burden.

The recession was already on when we were selling Crude at $100 a barrel. Yet we were borrowing and depleting our reserves.

If you get this, you will see President Buhari's policies did not create a recession.

The recession was not on when crude was selling at $100 a barrel. We were doing very well. Borrowing is a fundamental part of every budget, and we were healthy while borrowing at that time. Employment rate was not at its best at that time, but it was fair. Nigeria was starting to export Agric products and local manufacturing picked up with high FDI inflow. Government expenditure made Nigeria a big consumption based nation, which investors couldn't wait to jump into. We were doing just fine.

The bane of those administrations was high corruption rate and a high recurrent expenditure.

We are now in a recession, and we would have avoided it if FDI inflow was maintained, and if there was peace in the Niger Delta. Those two were some of the most chronic ones that drove us into recession quickly. Buhari's government didn't manage them well. He destroyed them.

The Govt and CBN is expected to bail the banks out when they have liquidity problems.

Does it make sense for them to still hold Govt funds and when they eventually face same challenges like other banks did we still add more Govt money to ensure they float.

The major impact on banking is not TSA but the crash in oil price.

Most bankers know their main profit makers are the guys dealing.

How do we get forex when the amount of dollars gotten from crude oil sales has reduced DRASTICALLY!

Banks even fund oil and gas sector projects and get huge returns on investments.

The oil price has a ripple effect and it affects SAUDI ARABIA as a nation 2.

The effect of the drop in oil price was compounded by the policies of Buhari's administration, which led to a recession. Saudi Arabia is not in a recession.

Secondly, was the government not aware that oil prices was down before deciding to sweep the huge financial Capet off the feet of Nigerian banks? Didn't they know that it would worsen the already bad situation. Government aid banks e.g. Study the impact of US government's bail out of banks and how it helped the US to reemerge. This government should have taken context into consideration. They should have taken a gradual implementation approach. They would have reached the same goal without causing much damage.

The drop in oil prices did not throw Nigeria into a recession. Government's self-destructive policies like the approach in Niger-Delta, unguarded utterances and forex policy that affected local production caused our recession. Oil has risen to $40++, we would have been better than we were 2 years ago when it dropped to $20.

jbcul4ril:
here you goA recession is a general downturn in any economy. A recession is associated with high unemployment, slowing gross domestic product, and high inflation.

Economic Recession Definition

Economic recession is a period of general economic decline and is typically accompanied by a drop in the stock market, an increase in unemployment, and a decline in the housing market. Generally, a recession is less severe than a depression. The blame for a recession generally falls on the federal leadership, often either the president himself, the head of the Federal Reserve, or the entire administration.

Factors that Cause Recessions

High interest rates are a cause of recession because they limit liquidity, or the amount of money available to invest.

Another factor is increased inflation. Inflation refers to a general rise in the prices of goods and services over a period of time. As inflation increases, the percentage of goods and services that can be purchased with the same amount of money decreases.

Reduced consumer confidence is another factor that can cause a recession. If consumers believe the economy is bad, they are less likely to spend money. Consumer confidence is psychological but can have a real impact on any economy.

Reduced real wages, another factor, refers to wages that have been adjusted for inflation. Falling real wages means that a worker's paycheck is not keeping up with inflation. The worker might be making the same amount of money, but his purchasing power has been reduced.

Recessions and Gross Domestic Product

An economic recession is typically defined as a decline in gross domestic product (GDP) for two or more consecutive quarters. GDP is the market value of all goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time. An example of one type of GDP would be the value of all the automobiles produced within the United States for one year. GDP only takes into account new products that have been manufactured. Therefore, if a pre-owned car lot were selling pre-owned cars, they would not be included in the GDP calculation.

I highlighted a few points in your definition for you to use in comparing the seven factors that I listed as antecedents. For example, unemployment rate rises when investment rate reduces. The sudden implementation of the TSA, the insolvency of manufacturing firms, the loss of foreign direct investors and the shut ins by Petroleum Multi national companies threw people into the unemployment market. These effects were as a result of wrong policies by the current government. Which is why your definition noted that the government is always responsible for and blamed during recessions.

Lol.
How will the way it was implemented lead to recession ?
How about typing the way it should be imomemented so we have a more fruitful argument and learn.

The TSA was delayed by the last government with a plan to ensure gradual implementation to avoid the financial shock that a sudden implementation would cause in the banking and finance sector. Buhari came in and implemented it suddenly. 50% of the liquid assets of banks, which averaged 6.7 Trillion Naira for the past 2 years, was suddenly wiped out. It caused banks to shed their workforce, and up till today, the financial sector is still grappling with it.

I guess all other oil producing nations to did that.

People come here and craft a losers lamentation in the name of opinion.

If your salary reduces by 60% or more will u continue all the projects u are running and also continue to be father Christmas?

Nigeria's budget is always done with the oil price bench mark in mind.

To think there is any magic anybody can do is brainless.

Yes they blame GEJ because if they had invested heavily in infrastructure during the oil price boom and not just stealing it, there will be a lot of things to fall back on.

There was nothing wrong with the TSA policy. There was everything wrong with the way the Nigerian government implemented it. That is the point.

Bro, no need for long talk. Life can never remain the same for a struggling man if he suddenly loses over 60% of his routine income. No amount of FDI can perform any magic to print dollars or to match the lost 60% revenue overnight. Oh yes! Oil price has been used as an excuse for too long, but the fact remains that this 60% loss in revenue can never be overemphasized.

You, definitely, are ignoring the antecedents to the 60% loss. Would it have been a 60% loss if Niger Delta was peaceful and there was no NDA? Would it have been a 60% loss if a more gradual approach was used to implement the TSA?

So you think buhari ordered the increase in prices?

No, I don't think he ordered it. I know that his faulty policies led to the rise in prices, and that he has no clue about how to reduce the prices and improve the value of the Naira. If he had, he would have been working towards creating incentives to attract foreign direct investments i.e. Foreign manufacturers, while subsidizing local manufacturing as a means of making importation less attractive, than simply using executive powers to stall importation. He should have done everything to prevent the outflow of foreign investors to begin with.

Scarcity drives up prices.

Import is low because there is little amount of dollars to fund our import based lifestyle where we import everything.

Prior to the mopping up of the dollar from the system, CBN had approximately $600 million left in its coffers......... at the rate we were going, there won't be any left by now.

Smart people are already adapting.

I used to buy Spanish, chinese, Dubai tiles in the past, I go to the markets now and find out there's a sudden influx of made in Nigeria tiles.

If they had sat around blaming Buhari, they won't be where they are now. I

Scarcity drives up prices. High unemployment rate combined with high prices increases hunger and poverty. The solution is to use government expenditure to stimulate investment in the private sector with an expectation that it will facilitate domestic consumption and make the market more attractive for more influx of private investments. This will naturally create capitalist competition and naturally drive down prices.

You don't stall importation and increase prices in the face of high unemployment rate and low investment rate. You'll simply drive your country or business into an abyss. Contrary to what people are thinking, Buhari is hoping on God to answer the prayers of the pilgrims that he subsidized Forex for.

By the way, if this government continues the way it is going, you will go to the market one day and you will not find tiles to buy either because they will be too expensive or you just won't have the money to buy them.

1) Sudden Implementation of Treasury Single Account (TSA)- This policy threw the banking and financial sector into turmoil as huge sums were swept out of banks and dormantly stashed into a preferred safe.

2) Tightening of Foreign Exchange Transactions- This policy made it difficult to make foreign exchange, and threw thriving businesses into turmoil which led to massive sacking of workers and manufacturing slowdown.

3) Unguarded Utterances During Foreign Trips- The president made several unguarded utterances that gave the impression that Nigeria was headed for the rocks. This made foreign investors hesitant about coming into Nigeria, and encouraged those that were already in Nigeria to speculate and pull out funds.

4) Halting of Important Projects in the Niger Delta- Buhari moved to remove majority of the projects that were created to provide tangible benefits to Niger-Deltans. For example, the Maritime University and Pipeline protection projects. Though, some of these projects were condemned by Nigerians, they kept the Niger-Delta at peace and allowed for the maximization of the benefits from petroleum exports.

5) Buhari's Northern Developmental Focus in Nigeria- The developmental aim of the president is very much skewed towards Northern Nigeria than every other part. So, he is more like kick starting a new economic focus, while dumping existing economic strengths. For example, he is devoting billions of dollars to search for petroleum in the North when Nigeria does not have functional refineries to ensure adequate availability of petroleum products that are already being produced in the South.

6) Elimination of All the Policies Made by PDP- it is on record that even though PDP led governments were corrupt, they made some major strides in diversifying Nigeria's economy. For example, Agricultural export came to life under PDP. Buhari has focused on bedeviling and antagonizing every single policy made by the PDP. In the process, he has thrown out good policies and progress that were made in the past. He is almost starting afresh, and this has rebooted Nigeria and thrown us years backwards.

7) Preference for Violence over Dialogue- Buhari prefers to use military force to quell civil strife. This approach ignites more protests and civil disobedience. An economy cannot experience progress in violent conditions. Even Lagos and Ogun axis has experienced an open show of military bombardment, which scares a heck out of investors. The same is true about the production shut ins in the Niger Delta region. Some of these issues can be solved with dialogue and with police actions than full scale military assaults.

I am talking of the South East geopolitical zone, not Southern Nigeria. The zone has remained marginalized, even under Goodluck Jonathan. The only reason why GEJ's reign was preferred was because the zone was politically relevant under him, and he, atleast, remembered to give us very few and basic federal infrastructural support e.g. Enugu airport to aid international business travel. We opposed APC and Buhari vehemently because we were sure that they were going to reentrench the era of delibrate marginalization of the SE geopolitical zone.

They have proven us right. We will keep opposing them till the last drop of our blood. We will prove this by booting their stooge, Rochas, out of power. Lest I forget, Amadioha is already slapping him for his stupidity.

Yes, but look at who's who in SE..Theo Orji in senate after doing nothing for 8 years as gov, and his crony Ikpeazu is there doing nothing. Same in Ebonyi, Imo, etc. So how can your rivals take you serious when you cannot even find a way of making leadership in your region accountable to the people.

Furthermore, how did that woman in Enugu government house become governor? Clearly he thought he was gonna sail right through for 4 years until the Fulani cattle friends messed up the game plan.

How does having dormant and inactive politicians encourage a president or party to marginalize a geopolitical zone? Is the government not meant to develop every nook and cranny of Nigeria? Your excuse for the marginalization makes no sense.

This is why some people are clamouring for Nigeria to be divided. Not like we care. They keep striving to pull us down, but we know how to survive and develop better, with little or no support from the federal government, than any other political zone in Nigeria.

Despite all their marginalization, we are not crying of hunger, we still dey flex, we still making lots of hard currencies, we are still bringing goods into Nigeria and we are still moving in and out of Nigeria without stress. The FG is a curse unto itself.

We are all aware that this government is marginalizing the South East Geo Political zone. We understand that they are striving to make the Nigerians in the SE GP zone regret not voting for them. They are striving to subdue us politically. Yes, we know, but we are just silent and observing their foolishness.

What they don't know about South Easterners is that we are stubborn and resilient. This marginalization e.g. some of FG's FOREX policies, import policies, transportation plans etc that are hurting the economic lifeline of business men in the South East, has contributed to Nigeria's economic recession. They cannot destroy the South East. We are like a fly that has perched on Nigeria's scrotum. They will hit us hard, no doubt, but they will be the ones that will screeeeeaaam in excruciating pain.

Nope. The North is the Presidents primary constituency and I'm sure you realize he doesn't get excited at being called a parasite or his region blamed for holding the country back. The North is too big and blessed (manpower, minerals, agriculture, political acumen) to be lagging behind other regions in this country. That must change.

Furthermore, it is his duty as you rightly stated, to ensure the entire country moves forward and if that is to be possible, extra attention must be paid to region accused of holding the rest of the country backwards so we can all move forward. Abi?

Regarding my last paragraph, use your tongue to count your teeth.

Yeah, the North is big and blessed indeed. I hope the region's abundant resources will be used to develop the region. It still boils down to the state and local government levels. If they decide not to develop themselves, nothing will change.

As for using my tongue to count my teeth, I hope you will do same in trying to understand the antecedents to the rise of groups like Niger Delta Avengers, IPOB etc. Like I told you before, NO REGION IN NIGERIA CAN DOMINATE OTHER REGIONS IN NIGERIA. It has never ended well for leaders that have tried to do that in the past.

So you're saying you want to keep heckling the North about its challenges but don't want focus to be concentrated on solving them?

Have President Buhari and his ministers abandoned their responsibilities to other regions just because Kerry visited the North alone?

The fact is the North is set to experience accelerated development in the coming years along with other regions that choose to cooperate with the government; it is a region too big and too blessed to be insulted by other less politically dominant regions. Things must change.

The North's got adequate representation in Nigeria. The executive, legislative and judicial arms of government exist in these states. Why do you portray them as being disadvantaged? The governors in these Northern states owe Northern Nigeria citizens the exclusive responsibility of developing their states and local governments. The president (head of the Nigerian state) should not focus on the North. That is why he is the president.

Who is insulting the North? Who are the less politically dominant regions? Please, educate me further because I don't understand your last paragraph. What things must change?

It's the threat of political domination, which is the threat I alluded to.

To your question. Northern Nigeria is constantly heckled, particularly by the South, for dragging the rest of the country backwards due to its human development statistics which urgently need to be addressed. Why do you now act surprised that the region's development is the priority of the President and his international partners?

Regarding national security (BH,NDA,IPOB), deliberations of that nature are taken in Abuja where Kerry subsequently visited, and not Bayelsa.

Thanks for your detailed and non-insolent reply. Please, keep it this way.

I still insist that the president shouldn't make the development of one region his priority. What you enumerated is what the states and local governments in the Northern region exist for. The president is a national leader. His priority should be on every nook and cranny of Naija.

The north is just as impoverished as the Niger Delta region. There is no part of Nigeria that is developed. Shouldn't his priority be national development instead of one region's development?

It's only natural to feel threatened.

Buhari's many trips that you called junketting attracted tremendous international goodwill and financial commitments for the war against terror and development of the North and so you shouldn't be surprised at Sokoto being the first port of call for the U.S Secretary of State.

No one is threatened. Nigeria is too big for one single group, be it ethnic or religious, to dominate others. You can dominate politically, not socially and economically. So, it's unnecessary to feel threatened. IBB, Abacha and co couldn't do it then. It can't be done now. The worst that will happen is that the country will burn to ashes.

Your second point seems valid. Does this mean that Buhari is more interested in the security and development of Northern Nigeria than other parts? Last I checked, the middle belt is being ravaged too by terrorism, and the NDA is wreaking economic havoc in Southern Nigeria. Are those not security challenges? Why only North?

Politics / Why Did John Kerry Visit Only The North? by Justcash(m): 6:32am On Aug 25, 2016
As United State's Secretary of State, John Kerry's visit to Nigeria should be very important and eventful, especially as Obama blatantly refused to visit Nigeria throughout his 8 years of leadership. It should involve economic exchange, along with political discussions.

The question is, why did John Kerry ignore Lagos, the economic engine of Nigeria, to visit Sokoto instead? Why was his visit so vested on meeting Northern Nigeria governors and states? Was economic exchange not in the agenda? Even if it was purely political, is Southern Nigeria not part of America's interest?

I walked into a bar in Melbourne and coincidentally saw the news being shown on TV, the overwhelming portrayal of Nigeria as a caliphate, and the traditional domination of Northern figures around the visit left my friend asking if Nigeria is an Islamic state like Saudi Arabia?

Please, abeg, MAKE UNA LEAVE TRIBALISM AND GIVE ME A VALID ANSWER.

The Nigerian soccer team to the Olympics are as of Tuesday August 2nd stuck in Atlanta because chartered flight that is suppose to fly them to Brazil has not been paid. The team who had been training in Atlanta, in preparation for the Olympics were meant to have flown out last Friday, after the Nigerian community in Atlanta turned out to give the team a send-forth.

It was learnt Nigerian Football Federation is responsible for booking the tickets for the team to travel, but we heard there is a logistical mix-up with payments,” a source close to the Nigeria Football Federation revealed. “The money paid by the ministry for the charter flight did not hit airline’s account on Tuesday, so they refused to fly the team to Brazil.”

They are now scheduled to leave the southern American city of Atlanta on August 3rd, and be ready for their first game the next night against Japan on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET in Manaus, an isolated city in the Amazon rainforest.
