Kobojunkie:I don't get your point. Is that not a betrayal of the electorates trust? Does siphoning public funds for personal use show that they have a clue of what they are surppose to be doing in Power? Explain yourself better so that I can understand. From all indications, what you wrote still shows that they are so blinded by curruption that they cannot recognise opportunities to become Nigerian political legends with some visible favourable economic trends. |
edoyad:They can't even see the opportunities. They are so blinded by acute curruption and political power struggle. ![]() tokunegiye:Don't generalise. If we are not ready we will not become successful in other countries. I pay 0.4million dollars as tax per annum in a foreign country. Convert it to Naira and imagine what the impact will be in a Nigerian state's economy. If they did the right stuffs, My factory would have helped to stimulate development in Nigeria. |
edoyad:A sign of greed, lack of political will, selfishness, heartlessness and low intellect. It exposes the perception of leadership as a means of getting rich, than serving the people in Nigeria. agitator:Well, it takes passion and political will to ensure change. Man, I don't know how I will get to that post and not stimulate development. What I have seen for over 13 years going around the world has created an indepth will that in unwavering in me. It will be difficult for me to loose focus and let Nigeria lie dead. God Forbid bad thing!!!! |
tensor777:I bet they are ready to face the consequences. The rate of negative acts by Nigerians (especially youths), despite their dangerous consequences points to the fact that they are ready to bear the after effects. An example is the Nigerian youths that traffic drugs in Singapore and other South East Asian countries, where no jupiter will save them from a death sentence if they are caught. "Get rich or die trying" That is the attitude they exhibit. I don't blame them. When the rich and ruling Nigerian elite sit on the opportunities of the budding and ambitious Nigerian youths, the result is a dangerous struggle and scamper in the jungle to make it by hook or crook. A very Sad situation |
Afam:Seconded, True talk. |
tensor777:@ tensor777: Apart from an inadequate primary health care sector, we have alot of literacy schemes in Nigeria, both by the Government and private sectors. If you are not aware, we have an abundance of technical skills that have become redundant and obsolete due to lack of practical application. Primary health care will be good only if it will be free because at the moment many Nigerians cannot afford it. It still boils down to my point that with the provision of a good macro-environment, entrepreneurs will utilise those technical skills, Literacy schemes will become an effective way of instilling and upgrading skills to be applied in these entrepreneurial ventures, and primary health care can become affordable when wage rate increases, improves due to high employment rate and expands due to industrial competition. |
backspade:From all indications if we have the money to provide these things, development will be achieved right? Nigeria has the money, why is our development difficult? This is why I asked why such roads are difficult to build in Nigeria to encourage businesses? Why are the basic infrastructures so difficult to provide? Are Nigerians allergic to such provisions? We actually have the money to get these things, but despite the allocation of huge public funds by the govt, things are never gotten right. Why? |
ode remo:You are wrong my brother. To get people in the private sector that will put bread and butter on the table for ordinary and average Nigerians , the government needs to simply make them show up and do those things. The way Nigeria is now, it will be difficult to get such people to do that. We are in a capitalist world. Nothing goes for free. Once I am given a fair environment to make money, I can involountarily put bread and butter on the table of average Nigerians by providing jobs and embarking on Coperate social responsibility drives to boost my competitiveness in the industry. What GLO and co are doing is just a piece of cake compared to what can be achieved through a favourable investment climate. Your last statement is exactly what keeps me wondering. |
SapeleGuy:@Sapeleguy: That's exactly my point, |
9jaganja:We have millions of Nigerians that are pro-developmental. As a matter of fact, there are millions of Nigerians home and abroad that will explode if they are given the chance and means to do what they can do. Of what use is intellect if it not put in good use? We are on Nairaland talking about developmental issues that can really contribute to the change of Nigeria, yet there is no chance or opportunity to apply them practically. What is the use of quality education without an enabling environment to practicalise what you learnt? People go around shouting "illiteracy". For example, Do you know that when an illiterate is meant to produce a business plan before he/she can open and run a business, he/she will be forced to learn how to make adequate plans for his/her business? What is on ground to ensure literacy? you are under-estimating the development boom that will happen in Nigeria if simple basic infrastructures are put in place. Illiteracy is not Nigeria's problems, it is the lack of government's political will to ensure development. I |
The Problem with Nigeria is the lack of our government's political will to develop the country. The single and most important pre-requisite for a nations development is the investment sector and climate of a country. For a country like Nigeria, many people seem not to understand that being literate (Educationally) does not really count anymore. The huge number of graduates in Nigeria vindicates my assertion. What matters more now is economic empowerment, which will serve as a catalyst for the growth of everyother sector. To provide this economic empowerment several things needs to be on ground, ranging from right governmental policies to the availability of infrastructures. These are what the governmnent should put in place before things will start adjusting naturally. A friend of mine that is a medical doctor once thought about introducing mobile medical clinics in Nigeria, after spending several years in Germany. He looked at the pros- and cons-, then quietly gave up the idea. I asked him why. He told me straight up that his cost of offering the service will outweigh the profit he intends to make. He mentioned the erratic nature of availability of fuel during industrial crisis in the oil sector , Lack of protection from armed robbers when moving around cities, the high cost of repairs of his mobile hospital trucks and vans will gulp alot of money due to bad roads etc. This is exactly what I am saying. Government does not need to embark on the provision of everything. They can just make the environment suitable and make some effort to encourage investments, and things will naturally take their places. Like my Dr Friend, I have seen more than 30 Nigerian born doctors with similar Ideas and adequate funds to do same. Ofcourse all of you know that people don't make money to throw it around. Entrepreneurial Investment covers every sector of the economy, Eductaion, security, health, etc. The adequacy of These things can easily be achieved if the Nigerian government is sincere and ready to allow them to come. |
A credit line as low as 5 billion Naira will go a very long way to encourage hundreds of budding entrepreneurs. They prefer youths to rob banks for entrepreneurial capital. ![]() |
tensor777:Development requires a suitable Macro economic model that can suite a Macro environment, so that there can be an existence of a micro-economic system that can ensure an efficient micro-environment. We have money in Nigeria. But they are not well managed. Even when good plans are made, lack of political will kills them. Look at Lagos-benin express road, at this age is still like a rigged village walk way. People are killed there by armed robbers, those that survive come out with gory tales of how they survived. It is not good for business. Such things as road, light, water, rail system etc should be put in place to make Nigeria an attractive investment location. Then domestic production should be boosted to create a competitive economy. Then such an economy will be attractive to foriegn investors (FDI). |
tensor777:Do you know the meaning of Macro-economics and Micro- economics. Look up the meaning and correct your statement above. Increasing government expenditure is normally done through the re-purchase of govt bonds from Banks. When this is done, banks have alot of money. They will want to lend funds to investors for business (To benefit from interest). They reduce interest rate to attract investors due to competition from other banks. Investors Purchase such loans, in the process Entrepreneurial investors will have access to funds for their businesses. Then they create employment when they employ people in their establishments. By doing that, They increase consumption rate, which will further encourage investments. This will create a source of revenue for government ( income and company tax). It is like cycle that will raise per capita income and GDP of a country. Buyt all these will not be possible without the provision of basic amenities e.gsecurity |
tensor777:I would have been amazed if you noticed my point, a person like you cannot notice it. |
Kobojunkie:who is the We? Do you pay your tax? Do you even know anything about how the economy functions? ![]() I have started feeling nasautic at the kind of naive questions you ask. Where does the tillions go? They stay cool in the banks and in currupt politicians pockets. Are you satisfied? |
Kobojunkie:Like I said, I aint ready to teach you. I get paid to lecture people. I won't stoop so low to try explaining something to someone that is not ready to learn. FYI it is all over the net. Educate yourself beyond looking at dictionary meaning. |
tensor777:Man, what are you talking about. LISTEN! I SAID THAT THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD CREATE AN ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES TO FLOURISH BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA! THEY SHOULD PROVIDE BASIC AMENITIES AND PROVIDE LOANS OR ENHANCE GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE TO REDUCE INTEREST RATE AND ENCOURAGE INVESTMENT, WHICH WILL CREATE JOBS AND REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE. THIS WILL STIMULATE DEVELOPMENT. Did you see anything about governmnent building businesses for people? d |
Kobojunkie: |
Kobojunkie:Go and look at the definition of entrepreneurship. It is different from small business ventures. Anyway, the poor gala sellers don't grow because they are barely surviving. Most of them are in subsistent trade. They make 100 naira profit and spend it on food. They do it merely to survive in the harsh environment. When I mean Entrepreneurs, I am talking about people that have substantial capital and collateral for loans, with big and innovative ideas that can generate more money and create jobs. Entrepreneurial ventures are more risky than small business ventures. It is one of the few entrepreneurs in Nigeria that makes the gala that are being sold. The factory that makes that gala is helping to employ alot of Nigerians. Imagine what will happen if such factories are many. |
tensor777:What inefficient businesses? Oh! Non-existent businesses has already been pronounced inefficient by you!!! You see the problem with Nigeria? So Nigerians don't run efficient businesses? I have a feeling that I am talking to a Kid. what didn't you understand? What the heck!!! |
tensor777:How will the highlighted factors help to empower Nigerian citizens Socio-economically? How many literate Nigerian citzens have been empowered? What is the priority range of primary health care as a means of development, above stimulation of economic investments? Why does Nigerian literate graduates decide to rob, kidnap, do drugs and indulge in crazy social vices? How will health care help to make a citizen self-reliant? What is your point? That the govt putting in place the marchinery to raise entrepreneurs and stimulate investments is not a solution to the acute joblessness of Nigerians? |
tensor777:My point was that we don't need to spend that much to salvage our electric power situation. How could they have spent an amount far more than our national budget without getting it right? Education, Defense and security are the responsibility of the national governmnent, and can be done in collaboration with the private sector. I know several Nigerians that can invest in health care if they are given the right environment. Show us the reason why we should invest, then we will invest. Only a fool will invest in a country where the country's authorities will endeavour to make you fail for some socio-economic, ethnic and political reasons. |
9jaganja:@9ijaganga: What is the symbol of development? |
tensor777:Boy, I am a made Man. I talk in M of $$$. I am just worried about my Nigerian peeps that have not made it because they don't have the chance I got. I only wish the right environment was available for me to contribute to the economy of my country. Rather my capital is helping another economy. Unfortunately, I am into manufacturing, and it is too risky to try doing it in Nigeria with the situation there. Except the government will stake their cash, I can be sure that they can protect me. They behave like they gat nothing to loose. The way you are thinking will leave you on a stagnant spot for a very long time. If you don't reason properly, I am afraid of your future. |
tensor777: Bode george stole 80billion Naira fron NPA alone! and you are looking for a means of getting an extra revenue? Do you know that $25 billion dollars was used to bulid a brand new city in dubai, but we have wasted more than the same amount on power alone? Do you know what a sincerely allocated and implemented $1 billion dollars financial project can do to the Nigerian economy? I am surprised at the what you just wrote. So you don't even believe that we have enough money to turn Nigeria around!!!!!!! Now I see why it is so easy for those thieves to steal. |
@Afam: Nigerians are willing to produce, but how can you do that when you will have to depend on a generator to run the production process. What happens when fuel becomes scarce? When Criminals can easily go into your factory and steal you machines? When Produced goods are stolen in transit? When goods from China are cheaper (Low patronage)? Provision of electric power, creation of Industrial areas, Provision of protective policies etc can solve these problems Our government is sick! |
Tensor777: The government has a sole responsibility of ensuring the safety of lives and properties. All they need to do is to encourage innovative suggestions and contributions from enlightened Nigerians that wants to contribute. For example, the boys that built the armoured cars should have been effectively retained and set up by government to ensure thats those cars are made in Nigeria at a cheaper rate to aid security, instead of spending billions to import those made abroad. That way there will be alot of spill over like: 1. Jobs will be created if such investments are made. 2. The cars can be manufactured to suite the specific security needs of Nigeria's armed forces. 3. More Citizens will learn the art of making them. 4. Exportation of the cars can be generated 5. External investors will become interested (inflow of forex) Illiteracy is the least of our problems (I don't know how many chinese are literate, but they are growing) The problem is just the lack of will by the government to stimulate development. What does it take to build some of the best schools and training institutions in the world, in Nigeria? It takes simple political will to build, develop and sustain them. Why should private schools be more viable than public schools? It is a real pathetic situation. |
@Depilot: Volunteer jobs don't aid development like the power of Micro-economics. Demand and supply is very important for the growth of an economy. It is when you are able to encourage citizens to create jobs while making money that you can ensure: 1. Growth in per-capita income. 2. Stimulation of domestic production. 3. Stimulation of domestic consumption. 4. Reduction in unemployment rate. 5. Diversification of means of National income The list goes on and on. I will give you a graphical representation; 1. Government expenditure (Loans)-->Investment Growth--> Rise in Employment rate-->Rise in domestic consumption--Rise in national income(Tax) 2. Provision of basic amenities-->Protection of Domestic companies--> Rise in FDI--> Rise in export rate--> improvement of the national currency But with volunteer work, how do you help employment? What will happen to wage rate? How do you sustain the Work? What contribution are you making to national development? For how long will you volunteer? For your Info, there is what is called Coperate social responsibility. It is a spill over of adequate investments. |
@ Depilot: You are wrong. How do you contribute when you are deliberately ignored? Do you know that It is a Nigerian that is building the Iraqi Mono-rail system? He begged to do it for Nigeria but he was blatantly ignored! He wanted to do it because he felt patriotic. What is happening to the brothers that built the armoured cars in Nigeria? They are no where to be found. sometimes to contribute, one need to be heard. If it is about sweeping the streets and planting flowers, those cannot stimulate development. I am an international entrepreneur. Do you know how many Jobs I would have created if I had gotten a little entrepreneurial surpport from the government? How can I open a factory, and run it without basic infrastructures, thereby making my products more expensive than imported products? It will be a big loss! But if the government had given some policy and financial (Loan) surpport to protect domestic companies, I would have been encouraged to do that. Rather, they prefer to give everything to all the Dangotes and Otedolas of this world. A mini factory employs more than 100 workers. If such factories are more than 300 in each state, how many employed Nigerians will you have? It is as simple as A, B, C. I am not blaming currupt leaders, I am praying for God to serve them his appriopriate Judgment (Jeremiah 23: 1-2) @Kobojunkie: I think you made alot of sense. They are just satisfied with the way Nigeria is. |
@Tpia: Development is easy, when you have the money to ensure it. UAE (Dubai) is a case study. There are developmental models everywhere. It is just a matter of taking up one model and following it till the end. If our government is serious, it will not take Nigeria up to 15years to stand. It is very simple. For example, Develop the East with an American agricultural and Chinese trade models. Petroleum can take a second place there. Ensure that oil palm becomes a huge source of income from there. Develop the South with a UAE oil economy model. They should benefit from the oil there, and should develop fastest. The west should have the English (Great britain)/ Singapore developmental model. With a huge academic intellectual base, this looks suitable. (Fashola is trying do this now) The North should have the Malaysian developmental model. An Agricultural trade based economic development like in the days of the groundnut pyramid. It took Singapore 30 years to move from a third world country to a first world country, without any single natural endowmwent (They lack enough water). How long will it take a country that has so much money that a theft of 12 billion dollars by IBB didn't cause any damage? |
I keep wondering why it is so difficult for the Nigerian government to ensure development. Development is actually very easy, especially in countries with an enormouse financial ability like Nigeria. It is a matter of ensuring an effective utilisation of our Basic factor endowments , to stimulate the creation of some advanced factor endowments. It just as simple as stabilising the Nigerian Macro environment, to make the Micro-environment efficient. Imagine electricity supply. A basic infrastructure that is meant to be non-negotiable, in terms of provision. Tens of billions of dollars has been poured into it's rehabilitation, yet it remains dyfunctional. How come other countries have constant electric power supply, even when they are not as rich as Nigeria. What about Security? Why can't our police be enviable? What is so difficult in providing adequate police equipments and adequate training. Why can't they be paid well? The most painful one is the construction of roads. Why can't the government bring out money and construct very good and regulated roads. Since Nigerians don't mind paying toll fees, why can't they embark on a govt-private sectore initiative to solve the problem? I don't understand what is making our government officials so anti-developmental. Even the ones that claim to be good get carried away when they get into power. It is a big problem that needs to be solved. After all said and done, I am increasingly growing worried about the dishearteneing trend. |
