In 1979 Zik took his party NPP into an alliance with NPN and that was why Alex Ekweme was given running mate by Shagari. It was the NPP--NPN alliance Igbos voted for and not only Zik's NPP.

If Yoruba allowed a Northerner to be President, it means they are their benefactor at that instant. Throughout when Chief Awo was contesting for President with Hausas voting for him, Igbos voted for NPN because of VP position even when Chief Awo chose an Igbo man as VP. When Bashorun Abiola won the election too, Igbo voted against him and for a Northerner but he still won with states like Kano voting him. So if you check your history, the real facts, you will see that Igbos fit the description of slaves of Hausas more but it is better to divide up the country.
