Nairaland GeneralEFCC Arrest “yahoo Boys” In Lagos by justphillips(op): 8:56am On Jan 08, 2013
8 young men were apprehended at the 1004 Estate in Victoria Island on Friday 4th of January 2013. Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed.
According to sources, EFCC acted on a tip-off from a resident of the estate. “A petition by a concerned group alerted the Commission about the activities of Olusegun and his co-travelers at the elite 1004 Housing Estate where the fraudsters engaged in fraudulent activities of obtaining money by false pretences and forgery.“
The EFCC press release states
“One of the undergraduates, Hope Olusegun, a 25 year-old from Okene in Kogi State, and claims to be a student of Computer Science at the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University, Malaysia. He was arrested by operatives of EFCC over allegations of fraud and internet scam.
A search conducted by EFCC operatives at Olusegun’ s apartment led to the recovery of several items such as laptops, iPad phones, traveling documents, cheque books, flash drives, internet modem, and three exotic cars – a Mercedes Benz Jeep, One 4Matic Mercedes Benz Car and a Range Rover Sport SUV.
When asked how he came about the cars, Olusegun said the cars belonged to his sister who he claimed lives in the United Kingdom. Operatives of the EFCC also downloaded over 80 implicating documents from the laptops recovered from Olusegun.
However, the Commission is making effort to track down other members of Olusegun’s syndicate who are currently at large. Tunde Wasiu Sodiq, another undergraduate and member of another syndicate with close affinity to Olusegun’s gang was also nabbed by operatives of the EFCC at the Housing Estate.
Besides Sodiq, six other members of the syndicate were equally arrested. They are Badmus Akeem O, Ajijola Oluwatosin Emmanuel, Adebesin Olalekan, Raji Resaq O, Ajibola Adeniyi and Adeboye Lamidi.
Their arrest was sequel to a petition on their notorious activities at the Housing Estate. Sodiq (23) hails from Lagos and claimed to be an undergraduate of Brandry University, Malaysia.
The leader of the syndicate, Badmus Akeem, hails from Ayetoro, Ogun State and attended Oniwaya High School, Agege. He claimed to be a traveler who does odd jobs wherever he travels.”
Here is what the alleged leader of the syndicate Badmus Akeem is quoted to have said – “I decided to move to Malaysia to further my education while I do “Hot jobs” as well. I just got back a week ago before the festive period and also produce music and manage artistes.“
When asked why he chose to live in 1004 at the rate of N30,000 daily, he responded that it was to avoid the stress that friends and relations could bring to him – “I didn’t stay on the Mainland in Lagos because of stress of friends when you just get back from abroad.”
Sodiq claimed the Range Rover Sport car which was recovered from them belonged to his mother. This raised suspicions as the personalized number plate bears his nickname – “T.Wizzle”. In his statement, he claimed his mother “decided to customize the car plate number after the name of her first son.“
The representative of the EFCC confirmed that the suspects will be arraigned in court soon. In addition to the vehicles, other items seized include laptops, flash drives, internet modems and cheque books.
PoliticsIndia, Nigeria Trained Doctors Top UK Blacklist by justphillips(op): 9:32am On Jan 03, 2013
These are not good times for Nigerian doctors in the United Kingdom as Nigeria ranks second on the list of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council, GMC, register in the United Kingdom. This could have an effect on Nigeria–trained doctors who want to practise in the United Kingdom.

A recent statistics released by the United Kingdom General Medical Council on doctors showed those it has struck off its list.

The figures released under the Freedom of Information Request by Daily Mail UK, showed that three-quarters of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council, GMC, register in the past five years were foreign-trained with India-trained doctors topping the list of foreign-trained doctors of the GMC register in the past five years.

Nigeria-trained doctors ranked second. Egypt trained- doctors came third on the list.

The figures show that in UK, 194 of the 285 doctors struck off for misconduct or incompetence in the past five years were foreign-trained, while 29 of the 39 removed from the medical register in the past year received their medical degree overseas. This data focuses on the number of doctors struck off in Britain since 2008.

On the reverse side, doctors from countries like Hong Kong and New Zealand have clean records. Hong Kong has the best record, with none of more than 700 doctors working in the UK struck off or disciplined in the past five years while New Zealand’s 600 medics also have a clean record.

PoliticsWhy Azazi Won’t Be Buried In Country Home by justphillips(op): 11:28am On Dec 28, 2012
The late former National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi will be buried in Yenagoa, not his Perentoro-Gbene hometown, Ekeremor Local Government, Bayelsa State, Governor Seriake Dickson has said.

Azazi was killed in the December 15 helicopter crash in the state alongside Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa and four others.

Dickson, in a statement on Thursday, said the deceased would be laid to rest in a proposed burial site to be named Heroes Park because he was a hero.

According to him, the park will henceforth be the final resting place for all heroes and legends of the state.

In the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the governor also said the park had been designated a monumental and historic site.

“It will also serve as a constant reminder of those that gave their all to the service of the state and nation at various times and a source of inspiration to Bayelsans, both present and in the future,” he said.

He said the icons of other dead heroes of the state such as Major Isaac Boro and Ernest Ikoli would be strategically placed at the park as a mark of honour and respect for their selfless service.

He said the facility would be developed into a tourist site.

Dickson said, “The Heroes Park will also become a unique tourism destination, not only for the Ijaw nation, but to other Nigerians and people from other parts of the world.

“The government’s intention is to make the Heroes Park a regular tourist site like the famous Lincoln Memorial and Ground Zero in the United States.”

He also said high profile guests were expected to attend the burial of Azazi begining on Friday (today) with a Service of Songs.

According to him, former Heads of State, governors, members of the National Assembly, top military officers both serving and retired as well as members of the diplomatic corps were expected at the funeral.

The statement also called on the people of the state to participate fully in the burial programmes adding that it was the only way to show their last respect for their dead hero.

TravelCanada Reduces Waiting Time For Visa Applicants by justphillips(op): 9:22am On Dec 28, 2012
Abuja—The Canadian High Commission has reduced the waiting period for visa applicants from 60 days to 10 days.

A source at the High Commission told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday in Abuja that the country was now opening up and accommodating more visitors and travellers from across the globe.

“Because of this, a lot of Nigerians are sending their children to study in Canada and this has led to a backlog in the number of visa applications.

“This informed the mission’s decision to reduce the waiting period from 60 days to 10 days,” the source added.

Diplomatic sources the Canadian government took the decision, following persistent complaints by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olugbenga Ashiru, and leadership of the National Assembly.

PoliticsCold War Brews Between President Jonathan, VP Sambo by justphillips(op): 9:32am On Dec 12, 2012
A cold war brewing between President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo came out in the open last weekend as the two political figures attended two different events with their political allies. Mr. Jonathan was in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, to bury his brother, Meni, while Vice President Sambo was in Kaduna to give his two daughters, Aisha and Huwaila, out in marriage.

A top official of the Peoples Democratic Party told SaharaReporters that many members of the party were baffled that the president fixed the burial of his brother on the same day that his vice president had set for his two daughters’ marriage.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Sambo’s daughters’ wedding had been scheduled months ago. “The president knew about the wedding and received his invitation long before his brother died on November 20,” said our source, adding that First Lady Patience Jonathan had been tapped to be “Mother of the Day” at the nuptials.

Several sources disclosed that the relationship between the President and the Vice President started to deteriorate when Sambo received reliable indications that Mr. Jonathan was determined to run for another term in office. The prospect of the president’s going for a second term has alarmed Northern political figures, among them the vice president, who had been calculating ways of retaking Nigeria’s highest political office.

“We know that some northern elders have been putting pressure on Vice President Sambo to position himself to challenge the president,” said a source close to Mr. Jonathan.

Other sources in Aso Rock told us that President Jonathan was well aware that Mr. Sambo is exploring options for running for the presidency in 2015. “He has been trying to raise his profile and rally political heavyweights and operatives to his corner,” said a Jonathan associate. The source accused the VP of “trying to flex his political muscles, but he should know that, even if Mr. President decides not to run, he [the president] will still have a say in who succeeds him.”

One of Mr. Jonathan’s men said that they came close to declaring war “after Vice President Sambo selected a powerful delegation and went with them to pay a condolence visit to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on the loss of his daughter.”

A political observer described the scenes in Yenagoa and Kaduna last weekend as resembling “a realignment of political forces around President Jonathan and Vice President Sambo.” Those who mourned with Mr. Jonathan in Yenagoa included Senate President David Mark, who also has presidential ambitions, as well as numerous Nollywood players. On the other hand, such personalities as Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Muhammadu Buhari and several Northern political figures, traditional rulers and business executives attended the vice president’s more festive event.

A source close to the vice president disclosed that Mr. Jonathan was in a precarious position. “He is waging an ongoing political war against [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo,” said the source.

A confidant of President Jonathan’s admitted that members of the president’s camp were angry at Mr. Obasanjo for trying to remotely control the ruling party long after his exit from power. The People Democratic Party recently stated that there was no plan to reconcile the president and Mr. Obasanjo.

On his part, Mr. Obasanjo has said in private and public forums that President Jonathan is bound to leave in 2015. The former president’s statement is at odds with Aso Rocks’ strategy of leaving Mr. Jonathan’s opponents guessing as to his next plans.

TV/MoviesAngel Of Death Visits Nollywood? by justphillips(op): 3:13pm On Dec 09, 2012
The Nigeria film industry, popularly called Nollywood, could pass for a place visited by angel of death. Like Egypt, during the days of the plague, the industry has witnessed many deaths, to the extent that many are not only wondering what’s going on but also afraid.
At the last count, no fewer than about 10 actors and actresses, both popular and obscure, have died. The rate of death is like in the ratio of one death per month.
Checks revealed that the following actors/actresses, among others have died:
David Ihezie:
He was a veteran actor, who died in his Enugu base after a short battle with Arthritis on January 19. He was in his 70s.
Brown Atienwen:
Popular Benin-based seasoned Nollywood actor and staff of the Edo State’s Ministry of Arts, Culture Tourism, died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). He was unable to pay the sum of N150,000 for a major operation. The cause of his illness was unknown. He died in October.
Pete Eneh:
Sometime this month, news filtered in that veteran actor, Eneh, died after suffering from protracted illness, which culminated in the amputation of his leg. The actor, who was diabetic, sustained some kind of injury last year, which degenerated to a sore and refused to heal. He spent three months at the hospital before he was advised to amputate the leg to avoid the infection spreading to other parts of his body. The amputation took place on Wednesday, October 24, after all efforts to save the leg was unsuccessful.
Lekan ‘Lekinson’ Oladipupo:
Popularly known in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood as Georgio Lekinson, Oladipupo died on January 24 in Osogbo, Osun State , while battling a heart related illness.
Dento:
Yoruba comic actor, Hammed Odunla, better known as Dento, also succumbed to the power of death on Monday, August 6, after months of battling with stroke.
Cassandra Gabriel:
Fast rising actress, Cassandra, otherwise known as Sisi Caro in a popular situational comedy, Face2Face, passed on recently due to complications from an illness suspected to be cancer.
Akin Ogungbe:
Veteran Yoruba actor, Akin Ogungbe, popularly known in the industry as Ireke Onibudo, died on November 28 at his Iberekodo residence, in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He was aged 78. According to one his sons, Femi Abiola Ogungbe, his father was not ill but died of old age. The actor was the founder of National Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) and the oldest actor in the Yoruba film industry. He is survived by 15 widows with over 40 children and numerous grand children.
Enebeli Elebuwa:
It was a sad Wednesday morning this week, when the death of veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa hit tinsel town. The actor, who had been bedridden with stroke for two years, died in an Indian hospital in New Delhi. It was reported that his health deteriorated when he couldn’t afford to receive medical attention. It was also gathered that the stroke came as a result of uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which also affected his brain.
What’s amiss?
With the number of casualties in this league, it is instructive to note that the major ailments were either stroke, diabetes or heart related issues.
Meanwhile, medical experts have proffered reasons as many Nollywood VIPs have been kicking the bucket in recent times.
Meanwhile, medical experts have proffered solutions to the rising number of deaths in the film industry.
According to Dr. Justin Ihejieto of St. James Hospital, Olodi Apapa, the avalanche of deaths in the industry was a multi-factorial issue.
“It is not really a behavioural lifestyle problem, though it is a factor. Excessive alcohol intake, irregular eating pattern, weight gain, lack of exercise, lack of check up and so on may be responsible. Most Nigerians no longer do exercises. Since most of them are busy going from one location to another, they do not bother to go to the hospital for check up at least once a year; so the accumulation of all of these and more could possibly cause health hazards.
“Again, many of us no longer bother to check our heart conditions, thus anybody can get any cardiac challenge anytime. If detected at an early stage, it could be managed but can our health services manage it? That is why people are flown abroad. Also, where is the money to fly them abroad? It is expensive. Look at Enebeli Elebuwa. He doesn’t even have money to be flown abroad for treatment. The country cannot boast of these medical facilities. Even doctors are a part of the problem.”
Corroborating Ihejieto’s postulation, consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, Dr. Osagie Anthony, said: “The heart naturally, is a very resilient organ. It is the driving engine of the body. It can try to compensate, but when it gets to a point, it cannot cope anymore. In the early stage of any heart related ailment, you can try to revert to acceptable functional level. People should just live a healthy lifestyle.”
Other actors/actresses who are ill:
At present, great thespians, such as Peter Bruno, Ngozi Nwosu, Ifeanyi Dike, Prince Uche, Emma Edokpai, Victor Eze, who acted the role of Alika in the rested Fuji House of Commotion, are currently battling with stroke, diabetes and heart related problems.

PoliticsDrone Capture Proves Iran’s Superior Technology: Cleric by justphillips(op): 4:01pm On Dec 07, 2012
Tehran Interim Friday Prayers Leader has praised the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) for recent capturing of a US spy drone over the Persian Gulf, saying it shows Iran’s superior technology.

“This spy aircraft had been made by the US using the highest technology. However, Iran managed to take control of it with its higher technology and, in fact, hunted it,” Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Movahhedi-Kermani said.

An IRGC commander said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic has fully extracted data from the US spy drone, which was captured by Iranian forces over the Persian Gulf upon its intrusion into Iranian airspace on Tuesday.

Iran has released footage of the captured drone, which is a long-endurance aircraft manufactured by Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing.

Pentagon spokesman George Little acknowledged on Friday that the unmanned aerial vehicle that Iran captured is a US-made ScanEagle.

Referring to the recent developments in Syria, Ayatollah Movahhedi-Kermani said foreign intervention is fanning the flames of crisis in the Arab state.

“What is this situation which they have created [?]; they should let Syrian people to solve their problems. Of course, this country (Syria) needs reforms but they should be carried out by the people of Syria.”

The cleric further pointed out that the enemies of Damascus aggravate the crisis in the country because Syria is in the frontline of resistance against Israel.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of militants are foreign nationals.
