Those leaders did not kill in the NAME of atheism. As you said, they had communist ideals, and a whole host of other problems with their worldview. Their atheism was not the SOURCE of their wrongdoing, but a coincidental trait of those leaders. The problem with religion is that it, in itself, CREATES a motivation for killing & wrongdoing, according to the dogmatic texts. People who kill in the name of religion do so because their religion directs them to do so. And THAT is why religious wars are so problematic.

There are no atheist texts directing people to kill non-atheists. There is no atheist dogma leading any atheist person to commit any crime in the name of disbelief in god. There are only communists and dictators who HAPPEN to be atheist, and kill & plunder for selfish reasons unrelated to mere disbelief in dieties. The disbelief in a diety is not, in and of itself, a driving force for crime. However, the BELIEF in a diety that promotes the harm of nonbelievers IS clearly a driving force for crime in itself.
