babestell: SINGLE YEARS "Are you free of a wife? If so, do not go in search of one." 1 Corinthians 7:27 1st reading Those gifted to be single for the Lord do not commit sin if they marry (1 Cor 7:28). "But such people will have trials in this life, and these I should like to spare you" (1 Cor 7:28). All people have trials; so Paul must have been referring to unnecessary, additional trials. Moreover, it is sometimes good to undergo trials. However, Paul must not have been referring to "good" trials, or he would not have tried to spare anyone these trials. In summary, in the Scriptures the Lord indicates that those who marry but were called to be single will have unnecessary, additional trials, which it would have been better not to have undergone.
Is the Lord trying to show those who are single the way to the easiest, most comfortable life? No, He is trying to keep singles as free as possible to help them devote themselves entirely to Him (1 Cor 7:35). Some people in the Body of Christ need to be available for anything at any time to further God's kingdom. They must not be tied down by unnecessary trials. The exceptional freedom and availability of those single for the Lord is not for their ease and comfort; rather, it is for the good of the Body of Christ.
"The time is short" (1 Cor 7:29), and the times are stressful (1 Cor 7:26). Those of you called to the single life, the Body of Christ needs your gift now more than ever. Be single for the Lord and His kingdom.

Syncan: "...On the contrary, we will have none of the reticence of those who are ashamed, no deceitfulness or watering down the word of God; but the way we commend ourselves to every human being with a conscience is by stating the truth openly in the sight of God..." 2Cor4:2
The Chameleon...it blends with it's environment...So are most of us these days, we blend with the world and no longer stand out. Isn't it funny how we just hide our light under the bed, just to "belong"? How many of us still associate ourselves with the blessed Crucifix, scapular, chaplet, Holy Pictures, etc, even the Sign of the cross. Hahahaha...we are more inclined now towards olive oil, for it makes us blend with others. The use of olive oil blessed by a priest is good, but that's not what we are talking about. What sources of grace we abandon just to blend with the world, yet when temptation calls, how easily do we fall.
Good morning brethren, a splendid day ahead to all. I can only speak for myself you know. I believe it starts with having too many Pentecostal friends that don't understand some of these things. Small small, you begin to do the so-called 'loosening up' for acceptance or for whatever reasons or without even realizing you're drifting Since joining this thread for instance, Ive come to appreciate my faith more than ever before. Whoever said the company we keep don't matter? It's interesting how you take note of these little things. Thanks for sharing bro. A nice day to you as well |

striktlymi: No, that will only 'offend' one application of Relativism. "True" in this context is whatever is exact and sincere. If it offends one, don't you think there's a problem No? |
Christianity Etc › Re: A Thread For Catholics by Kamsified: 9:17pm On Sep 01, 2014*. Modified: 4:27am On Sep 02, 2014 |
striktlymi: I noticed you did not answer the question I asked. For the avoidance of doubt, the question again is:
Do you consider the Igbo traditional marriage rites as better than that of the Urobos? According to a relativist, the answer is NO NO in the sense that you're not even allowed to compare the two in the first place |
Christianity Etc › Re: A Thread For Catholics by Kamsified: 6:02pm On Sep 01, 2014 |
striktlymi: God says thou shalt not kill... Killing is to commit murder... Anyone who commits murder without repenting goes to hell... Our forefathers 'murdered' innocent children in cold blood... Thus, our forefathers are in hell.
The above argument is exactly what it means to use one measuring stick for every society; and to abandon totally the principles of Relativism. The contradiction you see in my comments are largely because you are looking at one application of Relativism. Like I mentioned before, I am not looking at Relativism in its extreme application. My focus is on Relativism as it influences are perception of what we consider to be true/fact. Can you define what is true/fact? Because if you consider something to be universally true or fact, you're already offending relativism. |
Christianity Etc › Re: A Thread For Catholics by Kamsified: 5:41pm On Sep 01, 2014*. Modified: 5:59pm On Sep 01, 2014 |
striktlymi: Do you accept that the Urhobo traditional marriage rite is superior to that of the Igbo's?
PS: Cultural Relativism, even in its strictest form, does not support hurting someone else.
Not so...
Culture, as a way of life of a people, evolves with time. It is not static! The code of conduct you mentioned, had to go through a series of criticism before it became the norm for each society. Cultural Relativism is not saying that a society cannot develop new ways of doing things. I think I have to first of all list the five claims made by cultural relativism for easier comprehension: 1. Different societies have different moral codes 2. What a society considers right is right, at least within that society 3. It is arrogant to judge one culture as better than the other 4. There is no measuring stick or universal standard to judge which culture is better than the other 5. D code of our society is simply one out of many So whatever you post has to stay away from offending any of these claims for it to correct |
Christianity Etc › Re: A Thread For Catholics by Kamsified: 5:32pm On Sep 01, 2014 |
striktlymi: I understand and agree.
Is it impractical to hold the view of Relativism and still go ahead to correct what is perceived as wrong? I don't think being a Relativist would hold one back from furthering whatever it is the individual considers to be 'appropriate behaviour'. There lies the problem. Relativism doesn't agree with this post except it abandons one or two of its claims striktlymi: ...but is truth not relative?
I think that Relativism is an attempt to let people know how unfair it will be to use one 'measuring stick' to judge the actions of men. How do you correct what you already claim to be right? What measuring stick did you use. As a matter of fact how did you conclude that a behavior is more appropriate than the other. I've bn opportuned to check out a few books on the subject, you'll discover that many thinkers rejected relativism because of those flaws I earlier pointed. The contradiction in your posts is that in the first post you're judging one behavior as more appropriate than the other. That is in itself against one of the claims by the relativist (note that relativism claims that 'we must not judge one culture as better than the other and whatever a society considers right is right for them) so for instance if a society decides that a woman must not be allowed to vote, then it's right for them and mustn't be challenged. How do you challenge what is right? Yet in your second post you agreed that there is no measuring stick to judge a behavior as better. So my question is 'how did you discover that one behavior is more appropriate? What measuring stick did you use? Before we talk about changing it(yet changing same behavior offends at least one of the claims of cultural relativism |

Syncan: "...I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God". 1Cor2:1-5
How very often we look for God in the mighty wind, only to miss him passing by in the gentle breeze. Oh, how many saints must have passed us by yet we didn't know, overlooking them, or even treating some badly. Imagine that Jesus own people overlooked him...“Is this not the son of Joseph?”...Lk 4:16-30. Yet right before them was the messiah they were waiting for. Many cases have there been, where people were embarrassed after finding out that the one they ridiculed earlier, wasn't that nonentity they thought at first. There's this case of a lady that slapped a top military officer(in plain clothes) in a traffic fracas, having assessed that her wealthy husband could arrest and deal with this man who was driving a car lower in value than her's. Things changed for the woman as her husband was humiliated publicly on the spot, by a group of soldiers acting under the watch of their assaulted Oga. How differently would I have treated Jnrbayano if I knew that God is pleased with him, would I have snapped at Ify124 if I knew she is an authentic visionary who see's the heavenly beings, don't you think I would have been more patient with wonda26 had I known that he stays up all night speaking to the Lord, nor would i have pushed away Chidima disrespectfully; if I knew that despite being my neighbor's maid, she is often visited by the blessed Virgin. Yes, yes, we would have done things differently had we known...but that is the koko... we wouldn't know, for we are expected to see Christ in all, because though he came being weak in appearance, yet exhibits a "demonstration of spirit and power". That person you may treat badly, may just be in possession of the power to bring your miracle home.
Dear Brethren. As we enter once again a new month, may the good Lord look kindly on your good heart desires, may he lighten the burden you bear, give you the serenity to accept graciously what you cannot change, courage to change those you can, the discernment to know the difference, and more so; to guide your path with Divine light. Amen.
Good morning and a splendid day ahead to all. Nice piece bro. Thanks for sharing Big Amen to the wonderful prayers |
