A woman has been rescued after being imprisoned for 16 years in a tiny room by her family as punishment for falling pregnant, it has been reported. In a room only 3x3 metres in size, Maria Lúcia de Almeida Braga, now 36, was forced to live in filthy conditions, often naked, and relying on her family to feed her in the Brazilian property.

The room had no toilet and stank of faeces and urine, police reportedly said.
Maria Lúcia was held there by her family after falling pregnant aged 20, sleeping in a makeshift hammock.

But she was said to have been freed this month after an anonymous tip-off led police to the property in the town of Uruburetama - breaking through padlocks at the building to find the woman.

A police spokesman reportedly: "She rushed over to the officers with open arms when she saw us."

The main family members responsible were her unnamed father and brother João de Almeida Braga, 48, who was arrested for illegally detaining his sister and mistreating her.

While the dad was not apprehended due to ill health, her mother is believed to have tried to resist the punishment for her daughter.

When she gave birth, she was said to not have been able to keep the baby and as the brother and father gave the child away.

Pupils at a secondary school have jumped to the defence of one of their teachers after she was suspended for posting a "provocative" selfie on social media. The teenagers overheard Lydia Ferguson being reprimanded in one of the school's offices before she was escorted from the site.

After senior staff discovered the picture, they called Miss Ferguson, who is aged in her 30s, into a meeting.

Pupils at Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell, near Milton Keynes, Bucks., said they listened as the teacher was accused of being "sultry" and "provocative".

They recorded the eight-minute row on their mobile phones.

"Miss Ferguson was saying she didn't think there was anything wrong with the photo. All it was showing was a bit of leg," said one pupil.

The students watched staff subsequently march their teacher off the school premises as she was suspended pending an investigation.

Pupils have shown their support for Miss Ferguson, who is part of the pastoral care team, and launched a petition called "Get Miss Ferguson Back" as they accused the school of being too prudish.

(Photos)Passenger Plane With 141 On Board Catches Fire While Attempting An Emergency Landing

Goke Olatunji, a former aide of Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has been arraigned before a high court in Ekiti over alleged murder. Olatunji is charged alongside Thaddeus Aina, a house of representatives member representing Ekiti north federal constituency II.

The duo are accused of the deaths of Tunde Omojola, a Holland-based Nigerian, and Ayodeji Daramola, a World Bank consultant.

According to NAN, when the case was called up, it was stalled due to absence of Aina.

Adekunle Adetowubo, prosecuting counsel, said he had been informed that Aina, had been flown abroad for medical treatment over an undisclosed ailment.

“My lord, the counsel to the 2nd respondent had told me that he was sick. The purpose of this case is to prosecute and not to persecute. Again, only the living can be tried and not the dead,” he said.

“We pray that he recovers soon and by the time he will appear, the trial can be heard expeditiously. We can’t continue with this case until the 2nd defendant appears in court, because this is a criminal case

“Ordinarily, we would have requested for a Bench Warrant to bring him to court, but we have done our own findings and we found out that he was truly flown abroad for treatment.

“My lord, this adjournment does not mean we are withdrawing the charges against him, we are not even ready for that.

“Some of those granted bail in this case could not be found now, but the 2nd respondent has consistently been coming to court. So, we want him granted this opportunity to appear when his health is restored.

“What we intended to do today is to mention the case, but under this circumstance, we oblige your lordship to give us a new date so that we can come with our witnesses

“We know that this case has a chequered history but we still need patience since the defendant was only exercising his fundamental rights.”

On his part, Adewale Fowe, the judge, adjourned the matter to April 27.

Omojola was killed in Ifaki Ekiti in 2006 during a councillorship election, while Daramola was murdered in Ijan Ekiti on August 14, 2006.

Both murders were committed under the first term Fayose.

The group of doctors and nurses can be heard laughing raucously as they danced around the patient at the Santa Cruz de Bocagrande clinic in Bolivar, Colombia.

Five medics were fired after an outrageous video showing them mocking a man on a surgery table was leaked online

The patient was unconscious and lying completely naked face down awaiting surgery on the operating table.

It is believed that a member of the operating team took the footage, which shows nurses and medics in scrubs laughing as they shimmy and dance around the man.

Authorities confirmed they have fired five workers in the video, saying the the video breaks 'all health protocols'.




In a statement, clinic bosses said:

'The respect for dignity of every patient is the most important thing in our clinic, therefore we strongly regret the inappropriate behaviour of those who are working as professionals in the health sector, seen in the video recorded in one of our surgery rooms.'

The statement added that the five employee's actions 'are against the dignity of the patient and are breaking the protocols and the political values of our institution focused on the quality and humanisation of our service.'

The clinic also apologised for the video. A spokesman said:

'This is the first time in seven years of good service that we are living a situation like this and we have taken some measures in order not to repeat these horrific acts.'

Senator Dino Melaye has shared a copy of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Certificate. The document states that he started the programme on 9th July 2000 and finished on 8th July 2001. On Monday, the Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Ibrahim Garba, affirmed that Melaye graduated from the institution with a 3rd class in Geography in the year 2000.

The tomb where Jesus is believed to have been buried is being unveiled again following nine months of restoration work that will be highlighted at a much-anticipated ceremony Wednesday.

The shrine, which includes a 19th-century ornate edicule or shrine surrounding the tomb, is a key part of the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City.


However, centuries of candle smoke and visiting pilgrims had left it discoloured and almost black.
Parts of it were also coming loose, with warnings that it was structurally unsound and posed a risk to the millions of pilgrims who visit the site every year. Israeli authorities briefly closed it in 2015 over security fears.


Following a $3.7-million (3.4-million-euro) renovation led by the church’s three main Christian denominations, the tomb has been painstakingly restored to its former glory —
including a warm reddish-yellow colouring.


The tomb AFP reports will be formally reopened today (Wednesday) in a ceremony in Jerusalem led by religious leaders and donors.
