The situation is so bad that even though nigeria is the sixth largest oil producer in the world, nigeria still imports fuel.

As a consequence millions of nigerians are suffering from total indignity and deprivation. Millions have died from road accidents induced by bad roads, millions have died from minor treatable diseases as a result of dysfunctional hospitals, millions have died from malnutrition and dirty water, millions have died from poverty, millions have fled the nation to become refugees abroad, millions are forced into prostitution and doing all kinds of hustling to survive at home and abroad. The skeletons of thousands of nigerians who have died crossing the desert to libya and morrocco litter the desert routes just as thousands more have drowned crossing the sea from libya or morrocco to Europe.

This is the price of decades of bad leadership and the bombings and other social vices is a direct consequence of the reality of nigeria as a failed state. We cannot live in a nation where corruption has been institutionalised and where leaders are looting billions without any consequence on a daily basis and expect the nation to be peaceful. Only a fool will expect to destroy his nation and get peace.

Nairaland should be scrapped as it serves no purpose as presently operated or alternatively be re-organised to concentrate on being a pressure group to campaign for change in nigera by publishing only socio-political issues including press releases and a periodic editorial targetted at the government.

The present method of registration for comments that allows anonymous scoundrels to invade nairaland with their ignorance and bigotry should also be modified. Registrations should henceforth be with full names and should be linked with a facebook handle that must have the photo of the person. Many websites already operate their comments page only through facebook links.  Linking registrations with facebook will weed out the cowardly scoundrels who pollute every website with their bigotry as such cowardly urchins cannot face the real world in their own skin. They can only hide behind fake handles to service their monkey lives.

This is my candid advice to make nairaland a better and more civilised goals oriented website for social change rather than the gossip oriented and scoundrel infested website it is today.

I have asked you a simple question which you refused to answer: If locating the federal capital in Lagos made no difference which you are trying to claim how come Ibadan which was the real capital of the western region is not as developed as lagos? The answer to this question will help you a lot.

My brother just leave this story. The nations you mentioned where some cities are more developed than  the federal capitals are few exceptions and it is because  those are countries with true federalism where the centre is weak and much development is concentrated in the regions each developing at their own pace.

America, Canada, Germany etc are countries with very strong federal systems where the centre is very weak and development is concentrated in the regions. These are few exceptions, as  80% of nations around the world have their capital cities as the most populated and developed. In Europe for example Germany and Switzerland to some extent are the only exceptions and these are nations with strong federal systems. All the rest from Lisbon, to madrid, to stockholm, copenhagen, bruxelles, warsaw, Rome London, Dublin, amsterdam, helsinki etc have their capitals as the most developed and populated centres and it is the same trend for most of the world especially in countries with unitary systems of government.

In nigeria's case she became a unitary state from the gowon era with the creation of states and the establishment of  a very strong centre that concentrated most development at the centre at the expense of other areas. If the autonomous regions had not been dismantled, it is possible that a city like Port-harcourt which was then in the former Eastern region and which was being developed by Dr MI Okpara the then premier of the East as a counter-point to Lagos could possibly have become at par with places like lagos through a concentration of regional investments and presence in that city much

Unfortunately the regions were dismantled and nigeria became a unitary state with an overbearing centre that tends to concentrate development and federal presence in specific locations while ignoring the other weakened states. The unitary system offcourse also made it possible and easier to pursue policies of marginalization by the federal governments against some areas by deliberately denying them critical infrastructure that can enhance development.

i agree with you, governors perfomance should be assesed vis-avis the amount of resources at their disposal because to whom much is given much is expected. However i still dont beleive that posting pictures and development projects can be an accurate  assesment of  governance because any governor who so desires can wrack that up and use it to hoodwink the public. If you are patient enough to wait as the different pictures flick through, you would notice that Imo state website:http://www.imostate.gov.ng/    has   more than 20 pictures and some very beautiful development projects yet the same governor was booted out by his people in the last elections. So we must be careful in using pictures to make assesments.

Furthermore contrary to your claim that most governors will jump at publishing their  projects on their websites, their are quite many of them who have never bothered to post any of such projects on their websites. For example i have watched television documentaries on projects executed by Akwa Ibom governor and the Anambra state governor which highlighted some executed projects but none of the projects i saw in the documentaries is in the website of any of these governors.

So the point is not all governors bother to post their projects online and pictures or development projects are not accurate means of judging good governance as any governor can easily arrange that:

As for Lagos, why should i even continue to argue this with you? for the last time let me make it clear that the mere pronouncement of a city as a federal capital has a lot of multiplier effects. Apart from a significant concentration of federal investments in infrastructure and construction of national institutions by the federal government, the private sector and the general citizenry tend to be pulled to such locations. A combination of these factors has built up lagos:  
Abuja is good case study: In just a few years Abuja  has become the most modern city in nigeria through massive federal investments in infrastructure and the construction of national institutions. The private sector is naturally following suit with so many businesses and the best hotels springing up in abuja. The citizenry is also gradually moving there with the population of Abuja on a steady rise. Abuja was a forest just a few years ago, today its the most modern city in nigeria because it is now a federal capital.

For the same reason and factors London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam etc are the dominant cities in their countries. In a nutshell, the whole of Lagos benefitted from the multiplier effects of its former status as a federal capital which led to a large concentration of investments from both the public and private sectors. @ Eko Ile: I am not in anyway downplaying fashola's lofty achievements which i admire.  Please let me clarify what i meant by the advantage of lagos in having more  revenue for development. Imagine a state like Enugu with roughly 5 million people but with a budget of just 66 billion that is barely enough to pay salaries with just a little left for projects.

And compare to lagos with a budget of over 450 billion. Dont forget that the civil service in lagos is not significantly larger than that of Enugu. Lagos state does not also pay social welfare to anyone as the generality of the citizens that reside there try to eck out a living on their own without any social welfare payments or social benefits from the state government. What that means is that after paying civil servants which is not significantly larger than that of enugu, Lagos state will still have more disposable income to execute large capital projects than a poor state like Enugu.

For example if lagos spends 110 billion on the annual salaries and emoluments of its civil servants, it will still have more than 340 billion to execute major capital projects in just one year, whereas if a state like Enugu spends 40 billion on the annual salaries and emoluments of its civil servants it will have just 26 billion left for capital projects which is hardly enough to undertake any major project. please get your facts right. the former regions had palm oil and coal in the East, Cocoa in the west and groundnut in the North. At that time under the true federal system, all the regions were autonomous and self sustaining so they used all their resources for themselves.

But from the dismantling of the regions and the creation of states by gowon, nigeria became a unitary state funded directly by crude oil proceeds since the 70's.
As for Lagos, we need to stop deceiving ourselves because lagos benefitted immensely from being a federal capital just like any other capital in the world.Lagos as a federal capital benefitted from major federal projects such as the international airport, major network of roads, major federal institutions etc which in turn led to a mass influx of nigerians from all parts of the country and the establishment of corporate headquaters of all businesses in lagos as is the tradition all over the world. Lagos state alone for example has more federal presence, more  flyover bridges and expansive major highways constructed by the federal government  than the whole of the southeast.

All over the world, wether in london or paris, or amsterdam, or bruxelles or madrid, or rome, capital cities most of the time  always attract more development and more influx of people  than anywhere else in a nation. The major reason why there is a large concentration of nigerians from all over in Lagos is because of those factors. In other yoruba states, you can hardly find other nigerians. lagos quite simply benefitted immensely from its former status as a federal capital just as Abuja is benefitting today. Denying this obvious fact as some of you try to do is ludicrous and very laughable. Cheers.

Let me endeavour to post some pictures from Imo state.

I am not into the business of bad mouthing anyone or group unless provoked by some of the sadistic monkeys in nairaland. Fashola has done well no doubt, just like some other governors expecially considering the level of mediocrity in nigeria. I do remember that in the Thisday newspaper rankings and awards for governors  which used specific benchmarks in their assesment Fashola did come first and Chime second. Lagos does have the advantage of having been a former federal capital with major federal infrastructures, institutions and a large concentration of corporations and businesses owned by nigerians from all over the country which all site their corporate headquaters in lagos.  For example dangote's headquaters is in lagos, just as pascal dozie's diamond bank headquaters is also in lagos.

This concentration of corporations and federal structures has made it possible for lagos to generate a large amount of internally generated revenue adding to the federal allocations which has helped a good man like fashola to have enough money to embark on major projects.  You need money to execute projects and the large concentration of population and business cluster in lagos has actually been a kind of advantage that made it possible to generate revenue for the renewal of the city by the accomplished governor.

I also do have a lot of respect for Sullivan Chime whose state is the 2nd poorest in the nation but yet have been able to make a lot of modest achievements with the very little money available. He actually has his own version of BRT buses which is known as coal city shuttle and new taxi cabs that look exactly like the taxis in NEW YORK.

As for posting pictures and development plans on the internet, i doubt if that is an accurate way of assesing a governor as many states have pictures to flaunt. If pictures and development plans are yardsticks to asses a governor,  Imo state  might come close to winning as the disgraced governor Ohakim posted a lot of breathtaking development plans in his website. This is why i never bothered uploading any of those pictures. Whoever is interested can visit the imo state website and be a little bit patient as different pictures and project plans will be flicking through and it takes a while before all the pictures including the projects under development rotates into the window

In all, i think we are better off leaving the real assesment to newspapers like thisday which use more practical benchmarks to make their assesments and those living within those cities who can testify to whatever developmental strides are on the ground.

Finally we dont need to spend our life abusing each other here over mundane stuff. Nigeria is a failed state that lacks the most basic infrastructure due to bad leaders and we all are victims. No amount of abusing each other here can change the facts that nigeria remains largely a jungle, which is why many nigerians are fleeing the nation on a daily basis. Most nigerians abroad will rather die than be deported back to that hell-hole called nigeria. A nation whose citizens are fleeing in droves cannot is purely and simply a bad nation.

With the exception of lagos, practically all other yoruba parasite states survive entirely on crude oil allocations. There are 9 oil producing states in nigeria, 7 in the south south, 2 in the southeast and one in Ondo. In ondo state the crude oil is produced entirely from Ijaw areas meaning that not a single drop of oil comes from yoruba land.

So the yorubas produce not a drop of oil but their rural parasitic states  survive entirely on oil resources from others yet you ungrateful goons come here to make noise.

Take away the oil resources and 90% of your states will collapse overnight.  I wonder why you havent on your own turned your other rural states to a mega-cities since you are such big mega-city builders?   Please show me any other yoruba state apart from federally developed lagos that has anything to show. Those who talk of voting blindly for tribal parties without checking what the individual can do are being very very ignorant. Nigerian parties have no ideologies and individual candidates decide what to do. Fashola's perfomance is not because he is in ACN, if he were to be in any other party he would be doing the same. There are some few PDP governors that are doing very well. We all know tinubu was not happy with fashola's perfomance.

I personally dont beleive in or support nigeria's return to tribal party politics. If you have read nigeria's history you would see that tribal parties have been at the root of nigeria's problems since independence.

Returning to tribal parties where one party wins the east and one wins the west and the other wins the north is recipe for increased divisions and ultimate doom.

I have checked other countries like South Africa and Ghana and i noticed they dont have tribal parties. Nigeria did very well under the SDP and NRC which prevented tribal parties at that time and led to the freest and fairest june 12 election.

Nigerian political parties do not have any ideology and most people just vote for tribe, religion or personality which is wrong and mediocre. In other countries, i have never seen anywhere where indigenes of the capital city insult their fellow citizens because they migrated to the capital of their country. It is only in nigeria that you will hear such endless whinning and noise by the very tribal yorubas.

This is proof that far from being accomodating, the yorubas are the least accomodating tribe in nigeria. They may not physically attack non-indigenes but their hostility and whinning about Lagos which can be seen all over the internet even when they know that Lagos was untill very recently nigeria's capital reveals the extent of their hostility and tribalism.

National capital cities are created  specifically for the whole nation and to host populations from all parts of the nation. Abuja is presently growing in population drawn from all parts of nigeria by virtue of being nigeria's present capital. Due to a concentration of the federal government and investments in infrastructure in federal capitals, people migrate to capital cities to seek job opportunities, business opportunities etc it is a natural phenomenom all over the world.

Many yorubas who are not from Lagos state also migrated from their villages and states to Lagos in search of jobs and other opportunities  just like other nigerians, and many of them are also  presently migrating to Abuja in search of jobs.

If Nigeria's capital had been Calabar, Enugu or Asaba, the result would have been the same as millions of nigerians would naturally have migrated to any of these locations in search of jobs and other opportunities as they did when Lagos was the capital and as they are presently doing now that Abuja is the capital. Outside Lagos, it is very very rare to see other nigerians in other yoruba towns like Abeokuta,  Ogbomosho, Ibadan etc.

The truth is that yorubas are the most tribal and hostile nigerians, that is why they continue to regale other nigerians with abuse and insults for migrating to Lagos even when they know the factors that caused the migration. the bible says, "by their fruits, ye shall know them."

Yorubas are very tribal hypocrites who like to pretend a lot. Little wonder their father Awolowo  introduced the tribalism that is now killing nigeria into the nation.

This is a final reason why we should stay silent to such fools.

Being that; Nigeria is the sixth largest oil producer in the world, but a vastly impoverished failed state.
