He would be 8 months in a week. There are so many new things he is exposed to (baby food, weather, clothes) so I can’t pinpoint what he would be reacting to. I just want to clear it. I have sudocream with me, don’t know if I should use it while I wait for the paed next week. Thank you for your prayers. JGracious: It could be an allergic reaction. How old is he and what does he feed on? Better still, check with a pead
God's blessings upon your family in the new country. |

Hello @Vcole, Can you shed more light on how you were able to manage to take care of your baby whilst schooling as well as working. I am going to land in Calgary in a few weeks with my baby (about 6 months) and I am exploring / researching seriously about childcare options for me as I intend to look for work or school full time. From my research, a lot of people prefers daycare to dayhomes and I have seen some bad news on the internet about this. what is your take on it? what are the regulations surrounding approved dayhomes? are they better? vcole: @czaratwork, hang in there. It takes a new immigrant on the average 5years to fully settle into Canada according to statistics. So it's easier said than done but you would be past this stage sooner than you think.
In my opinion, it is important to properly research job prospects in your intended field as well as jobs you may be able to get on arrival even if it is in a lower role or a "survival job" that you feel you would be comfortable doing to earn an income prior to arriving in Canada. It keeps you realistic and focussed by the time you get here.
For regulated professions, it is a realistic plan to be willing to settle for any job on arrival if you need an income quickly and then map out a route to obtaining your license if you so desire or map out a route towards an alternative career.
In my case, I already decided to go back to school prior to arrival to earn a qualification or two in an area that I have an interest in for the long term as well as one that would make me more employable. Obtaining my license is a long windy road that I would fit into the pipeline at some point along the way as it is not a top priority for me. I did job hunt for a few months and got a job working with special needs kids at a job fair but passed up on it for a govt sponsored employability skills training program. Most jobs readily accessible to foreign professionals with a health care background are nursing aides, dietary aides, care aides, community support workers, etc. I do not think I am well suited to those roles and did not want to get stuck in a job I didn't like for a while and so I enrolled in school and started this winter when my baby turned 6 months. So far, so good.
So if a survival job isn't something you feel you can handle, getting an additional qualification may be a good plan. Save up some funds for that purpose if you can. You could also consider applying for student loans from the government.
I find that Indian immigrants are a lot more realistic in their expectations as regards migration. They hit the ground ready to go and are willing to work at any job, get into school and work hard. It won't hurt for us to take a page outta their book.
For every success story of someone getting a job in their field soon after landing, there are several others slugging it out at Tim Hortons or Walmart. In the end, it will still turn out as a success story for both parties, just different timelines. |

chai..all these discussion of illness is making me scared. I guess it is the weather and its effect on babies. May God speedily heal all who are ill in Jesus name. Amen
In other news, I have successfully found how to preserve ogi (for those who don't have light). Simply scatter the ogi on a cloth/tray, spread under the hot sun to dry. Once dried, mill it with your blender to powder form and store in a container. No more spoilage. |

Yes it feels scaly. I have bought the sudocream and applied it to his body tonight. How long before you noticed any changes and cleared it up for your baby? JGracious: It is baby eczema also known as atopic dermatitis. You can google it too. Feels dry to touch and somewhat scaly right?
You can buy aveeno baby soap (Giddyperson please confirm, you once mentioned this) or
Mix sudocrem+ori and apply (this worked for us) |

Thank you sis. I think so too about the solids as he has not rejected any I have given him so far except for the major vomit yesterday when the daycare fed him oatmeal (story for another day) On the pap, it was not easy o. Now thinking of how to store it so it should not spoil. Is it possible to dry it in the sun and change it to powder. hunniesuzie: Breast milk is lighter so babies take more of that. However he may just be getting tired of milk and looking for solids. Try him with supported sitter cereal (4 months plus) and the ogi (welldone, my lazy arse could never) and see how it goes |

My 5 month old had a healthy appetite when younger and was chubby. but since he became 4 months, I introduced formula due to milk supply decline. His milk intake is reduced to 120ml max and 60ml at daycare during a feed, if you try to give him more, he would just pout and play with the nipple. This is a baby that takes 5-6 oz previously (breast milk with a bottle) I am worried that he is not taking as much as he should and is not gaining weight as much. Is it a formula brand issue? or he just does not like to suck as much. Formula brand is Enfamil. Meanwhile, when I gave him fruit puree up to 4 oz with a spoon, he finishes it. PS: I have made ogi (from scratch, proud of myself) so would start him on that from next week. Please help |

Thank you so much. I have gotten it. MrsWoman, please help us since you have written the CSC exam. The question remains "do I need to still buy the textbook (if I already have soft copies) to enrol for the exam"? Iyamefa: Okay, I actually don’t know yet. Just completed IFIC and gearing up to register for CSC but since I’m yet to do so, I might not be in the best place to advise. |

Thanks for this. If I may ask. Have you written yours? In Nigeria or Canada? How was the 2 exams? How many months on the average do you need to use to prepare for it? MrsWoman: I am very old school, I like to read from paper so i bought the value pack with the textbook. It was helpful. After reading the textbook, i attempted all the practice questions and exams, that kinda prepared me and i was able to find out the areas i needed to work on before taking the exams. |

thank you so much Giddyperson: Cough accompanied with catarrh is always horrible on my baby so we always end up at the hospital no matter how much we don't want to go, but one home remedy I've tried that made things better was the ginger garlic blended together, then you add hot water and give him a spoon of the water when its cooled, started that when my baby turned one, not sure a five month old can handle it. "Hunniesuzzie.
I have a preference for emzor vitc drops with the dropper head cuz its easier to administer anytime you remember during the day cuz you don't need a spoon or syringe, don't know about effectiveness of brands, just get a known brand. If it lingers, you've to take him to the hosp and run tests cuz it might be an infection. |
Health › Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by kazchick(f): 12:48pm On Jun 07, 2018 |
Don't mind my moniker I would buy the Vit C and give him. I am just tired of the cough and he constantly getting flu. The thing is affecting his weight as he does not eat as much as he can since the catarrh blocks his nose. I try to suck it and I wld now catch the cold For the weight, I want to start giving him pap as I read that it makes babies add weight. I also want to make Tom Brown. At what age should I start to feed him that too? Just want my baby to be healthy and chubby. 6.4kg at 5 months is small na. PraisesG: This your moniker. If the cold and catarrh is increasingly with vit c,please take to hospital. Any brand of vit c drop will do. Take care. |

Please my son has had cough and catarrh for the past one week which I suspect he got from daycare. So far, I have been giving him milk, and fruit puree. Pls is there any thing he can take to stop the cough and catarrh before the cough gets out of hand. He is almost 5 months old. What brand of Vit C can he take? He currently takes Vitane to boost his iron. Giddyperson: Lol most doctors are usually dismissive until baby starts showing serious symptoms. Since she believed you enough to prescribe antibiotics, she wasn't so dismissive cuz that's what they prescribe for serious cough. The ones I know would have given you just Vitamin C and Multivite and any other just-so-you-don't-leave-empty-handed kinda drugs. With what I know now I sha won't go to hospital for a once-a-day cough, I'd give Vitc and watch, and go only if it seems to be getting more frequent. |

Just going through this thread. My son also experienced it. He was admitted for a week and was on oxygen for 5 days. He is still recovering from it. We nebulize him once every day to help his breathing. But he currently has a cold and the wheezing sound is not there anymore. I pray it stays that way because I went through hell. The condition is called Bronchiolitis, a respiratory condition in child up to 2 years. It is after 2 years that they diagnose asthma. May God heal your son Awsome23: Don't know how to talk to you but my son was diagnosed of same at gbaja last 2months. He was on oxygen for 3 days and was nebulised every 4 hours. He had difficulty breathing. When he breaths you can hear from another room. We stayed close to 2 weeks but was discharged on the grounds that it will get better at home. I even bought a nebuliser. On Easter Sunday it got worse I took him to the private clinic where I gave birth and the pead told me you cannot diagnose asthma on a baby less than 2-4 yrs. Even lifeline confirmed this. They only placed him on oxygen for like 2 hrs then nebulised with normal saline not salbutamol. Then the pead placed him on steroid injection, just once and he was fine. She said its viral respiratory infection so it will run its course. Since then we have never had any episode like that. I pray for your son to be healed because I can relate. I went thru hell but God is faithful. He will be fine but explore other options. They kept loading my boy with antibiotics. |

Hello Everyone, Pls I need honest advice. I have been planning to land at the GT due to Job opportunities in about a month. Done my research and all that However, my baby has a medical condition which would not be covered under the travel insurance in the GTA if there are any emergencies while waiting for the 3 months to apply for health card, hence I am tending to think of landing at Edmonton. Edmonton is also considered due to the cost of living as compared to the GTA.
Pls what can I do? Do I land in GTA? Putting food on the table is also important to me but the health of my child is also key as I do not want to take chances. Any additional reasons to make me stay Edmonton look more attractive is appreciated too.
Also, any pointers on safe areas to stay, how to settle in Edmonton with post arrival agencies can also be appreciated so I can read up on it just in case I am settling there. |
