Arsene Wenger wants to re-write offside law in a bid to end VAR controversy Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger feels the introduction of VAR has exposed the law in its current guise as being loaded in favour of defenders Arsene Wenger is the driving force behind a move to re-write the offside law in a bid to bring an end to the controversial borderline VAR decisions that have brought football into disrepute. The former Arsenal boss believes attacking players should be deemed onside if ANY part of their body is in line with the last opponent. Wenger feels the introduction of VAR has exposed the law in its current guise as being loaded in favour of defenders. Goals are being disallowed for marginal calls, with a player ruled offside if any part of the body which can be used to score strays beyond the last defender Wenger took up a position as FIFA's chief of global football in November. Part of his role includes working on the International Football Association Board, the body that governs the laws of the game. And he confirmed: “I am in the middle of the controversial situation with VAR and it is clear that the most difficult thing that people have with it is the offside rule. “You have had offsides by a margin of a fraction of a centimetre, offside literally by a nose. “I believe it is the time to do this very quickly. “There is room to change the rule a little bit and not say that a part of a player’s nose is offside, so you are offside because you can score with that. “Instead, you will not be offside if any part of the body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender - even if other parts of the attacker’s body are in front. “That will sort it out because you will no longer have decisions about millimetres and a fraction of the attacker being in front of the defensive line.” FIFA are looking at other changes to pacify fans who have been angered by the controversy caused by VAR. They are set to demand that stadiums in all major leagues are required to install big screens to help keep supporters informed about decisions under review. Manchester United's Old Trafford and Liverpool's Anfield are the only two grounds in the Premier League without a big screen. Wenger also believes that VAR will be improved by employing former players to make decisions from behind a screen. Speaking at the Laureus Sports Awards in Berlin, he said: "At the moment, in what is the first period when we have used this technology, there are not enough VAR specialists who can cover every game over the weekend. “It will be improved very quickly if we change the protocols, so that we can use former players in the VAR room.”

Your boy seems to be enjoying the rave about himself Saka - How left back will improve me as a winger Bukayo Saka is flying at the moment. Despite playing in an unfamiliar role at full back, our talented 18-year-old has assisted eight goals across all competitions this season, more than any other Arsenal player. And Saka says his current left-back role will only improve his skills as a winger in the future. "I've learned a lot about how wingers in the Premier League play against defenders and how to position myself because in his system it’s different," he said. "I get to play much higher because the winger comes inside and I get to go. There’s a lot of space for me and it’s good for me. I’m playing sort of as a winger when we have the ball but without the ball I have to come back and work on my clearances, my heading and stuff I haven’t worked on my whole life. I feel like I’m doing ok right now. "In the future if I do get to go back onto the wing I feel like I know how full backs play and playing as a full back I know what wingers do, what I like them to do and what I don’t like them to do. It’s a good learning experience for me. "I’m really enjoying my football under the new manager. It’s not my natural position but he’s given me all the advice I need. I’ve got Granit behind, David supporting and speaking to me so it gives me licence to go and express myself in the final third and do what I can do. "The Newcastle win will really give us that push we need. It will give us a lot of confidence. It shows we can do it, we can score goals. We just need to shut up at the back and we can score goals. As long as we continue to play like this we’ll win games." Saka - What Arteta has already taught me This season has been a steep learning curve for Bukayo Saka. Not only did the 18-year-old become the third-youngest player to start a Premier League game for us, during our draw at Everton, he has also featured largely out of position in an unfamiliar role at left back. But although it has been a challenge, Saka says Mikel Arteta's influence has helped him settle into his first-team surroundings. "He's someone who understands the players, understands the club and all the ideas that he's bringing in," he said. "He has a clear strategy of how he wants us to play and we're just really excited to work with him. "He's teaching us little things that we didn't know before and just bringing in his own strategies, his own ways of playing. We can see that it's going to work, we're just looking forward to doing it. "Maybe one thing that I've picked up straight away is that when nobody's pressing you, you don't need to pass the ball. What you can do is just get the ball, drive the ball forward a bit and wait for someone to come to you, commit a player, then pass it. "Then that man will be free or that man will have less pressure on him. It's just attracting players before you pass the ball off, which will help our team-mates a lot on the pitch. "He has his own way, his own philosophy and he's even talked about bringing his own philosophy to the club, to try to bring the club back to the direction we need to be in. "We need to win games and win trophies, so I feel like he has that vision and that strategy. He knows how he wants us to get there. If we can be on board and do what he wants us to, we'll do well."

Chukwueze: Cazorla confirms calls from Arsenal over in-demand Villarreal winger The 35-year-old has affirmed the Emirates Stadium outfit have made an enquiry on the talented Super Eagles forward Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has revealed he received calls from the Gunners over a potential summer transfer of Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze. The highly-rated Nigeria international has been in fine form since his promotion to the first team of the Yellow Submarine in 2018, which has seen him attract interests from a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. During the January transfer window, Villarreal reportedly turned down a €35million offer from the Reds for the 20-year-old. Cazorla, currently a teammate of Chukwueze after leaving the Gunners in 2018, explained his former club have made enquiries on the forward as well as centre-back Pau Torres. “They [Arsenal] ask me about them and think they can make the jump to the Premiership tomorrow,” he told Marca. “It’s good that great teams are interested in young players from Villarreal, but for the moment I tell them to leave them alone here. “They still have to take steps forward. They both have a great personality, and their feet are on the ground.” This season, the £60million-rated winger has scored four goals and provided four assists amid other dazzling displays. Chukwueze will be expected to be on parade when Villarreal slug it out with Levante in Saturday’s La Liga game.

Mikel Arteta is back in England - and back in front of the media. Our head coach discussed our recent training camp in Dubai, as well as updates on Pablo Mari, Cedric, Bukayo Saka and more at his press conference ahead of the Newcastle game. Read on for a full transcript: on what we were working on in Dubai… It was like a mini pre-season for us in Dubai, we had time to work on a lot of our principles: how we want to set up against different formations, the relevant things we need to work on [both] on and off the ball and apart from that it was great to be together and spend some time together, get to know each other, not just the players but the staff and the backroom staff as well. It was a very productive trip. on maintaining the players' morale… We take it game by game. The input, the work ethic and the commitment they have been having through training and games has been really good. They know how crucial it is going to be in the next three to four weeks and until the end of the season. They are very aware of that and have a really good mindset towards that, they are highly motivated. on Pablo Mari’s fitness… Pablo has not competed since the end of December I think, he had a little issue, but he has been training with us the last week or so, in and out a little bit, but he has been looking good. I think this game will come a little bit too early for him but I expect him to start joining the squad in the next week or so. on Cedric… He is very disappointed because when you join a new club you want to make an impression straight away. He had an issue in his knee, it is not completely healed yet and he hasn’t been training with us so I expect him to be back in the next couple of weeks but I can’t give you a date. on Kieran Tierney… He is doing very good progress but we need to wait for the bone and the attachment to the tendon to heal before he can make any contact. He has been training, his work ethic is incredible, I have been really impressed with him so hopefully we can get him back soon but we need to be a little bit patient with him. on whether we achieved he wanted during the winter break… I wanted to give them a few days rest because they went through a lot of things in the last few months. After that, we reflected on what we did together in the last five or six weeks since I joined, the things we improved and are very positive and we have to maintain, and also the things we need to improve and develop. We worked really well, we agreed and set some targets and we have started to work on them and hopefully we can see the outcome in the next few weeks. on planning for the summer and if he's started to plan already... Absolutely. We have to plan and we need to know the direction we want to head and with that we need to bear in mind different scenarios and with that in mind, I have to tell the club what we need, where we think we can improve and where we want to end. And if we all end with the same thing, we put a plan together to try and execute it and make the process as short as possible. on the coronavirus outbreak and what precautions are being taken... We have great doctors here and people who are looking after our health. They've been putting a plan together to try and keep everybody in safe hands and we have some protocols that we have to respect within the training ground. But as far as I know, everything is under control but we have to be very aware. on Bukayo Saka and whether we're trying to sign him to a new contract... I am really happy with how they [young players] are developing. Part of that developing is to improve the contract and to tie them to the club. But that has to follow a natural process. We have Edu, we have Raul, Vinai and Huss who are in charge of that and I am sure we will do the right thing when players deserve to improve and extend their contracts. on whether scoring goals or not conceding goals is more important to him... It's winning. Obviously, that game for the crowd [the 7-3 against Newcastle] is great but for the manager it's not Mikel Arteta says our planning for the summer transfer window starts now. There may be months to go until we can officially add to our squad, but our head coach says it's important to identify targets as quickly as possible. "We have to plan and we need to know the direction we want to head in and we need to bear in mind different scenarios," Arteta said. "I have to tell the club what we need, where we think we can improve and where we want to end. And if we all end with the same thing, we put a plan together to try and execute it and make the process as short as possible." Arteta was also asked about Bukayo Saka's contract situation, and he is confident the club will address it. "I am really happy with how the [young players] are developing," he said. "Part of that development is to improve the contract and to tie them to the club. "But that has to follow a natural process. We have Edu, we have Raul, Vinai and Huss who are in charge of that and I am sure we will do the right thing when players deserve to improve and extend their contracts." Our warm-weather training camp in Dubai gave Mikel Arteta the perfect opportunity to assess his squad - and Kieran Tierney certainly made a big impression. The Scotland international is working hard to return to full fitness after dislocating his right shoulder against West Ham in December, and our head coach likes what he sees from the left back. "He is making very good progress but we need to wait for the bone and the attachment to the tendon to heal before he can make any contact," Arteta said. "He has been training, his work ethic is incredible, I have been really impressed with him so hopefully we can get him back soon but we need to be a little bit patient with him. "It was like a mini pre-season for us in Dubai," he added. "We had time to work on a lot of our principles: how we want to set up against different formations, the relevant things we need to work on [both] on and off the ball. Arteta hoping for Saka extension at Arsenal amid talk of interest from Man Utd & Liverpool |
'He's got everything': Ferguson claims 23-goal hitman linked with Arsenal 'walks into top-six side' Celtic hitman Odsonne Edouard has been linked with a number of clubs, including Premier League duo Arsenal and Leicester City. Former Scotland midfielder, Barry Ferguson, has claimed that Celtic striker, Odsonne Edouard, who has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Leicester City, would 'walk into a top-six side' in the Premier League. Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Ferguson, waxed-lyrical about the qualities Edouard has in his locker, as he claimed that highly-rated youngster has 'everything' and during this past month, he has been on a 'different planet' to others. The Daily Mail has claimed that Mikel Arteta's summer transfer wishlist is headed by a number of Europe's top stars, including Celtic's gifted 22-year-old, Edouard. Those sitting in the boardrooms at the Emirates Stadium will already have the number of their counterparts in Parkhead following Kieran Tierney's transfer to England's capital last summer. Given Edouard's recent form, it wouldn't be a surprise if he is the next high-profile star to leave Celtic when the temperatures in England and Scotland rise again, and ex-Rangers man, Ferguson, thinks he's good enough for the best of the best. "I rate him very highly," Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. "I have said a few times I think he's going to be better than [Mousa] Dembele. He has got everything in the locker. And certainly, during the last month, he has been on a different planet in terms of his football. "He's scoring goals and what has been the making of him is Leigh Griffiths coming up and playing alongside him. Two upfront. He can drop into the area where he is difficult to pick up. "But, he is in unbelievable form, at this moment in time. And similar to Morelos at Rangers, there will be a lot of teams looking at him. I have no doubt in my mind. I think he can go to the very top. For me, he can go and play in the top-six, easily, just now. I really do. I think that's how good he is and I still think there's improvement in him. He could walk into the top-six in England right now." Over the course of the season, Edouard has played 38 games in all competitions for the Bhoys, scoring 23 goals and supplying his teammates with 16 assists [transfermarkt]. Arsenal have a plethora of attacking talent on their doorstep, but there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding many of them, and it does seem as though the Gunners have lacked the spark they once had in the final third. In recent months, the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are just some of the youngsters who have shone under Arteta. Could Edouard add his name to that list in the summer?

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka could become 8th player to swap Gunners for Man Utd Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka has been linked with a switch to Manchester United and he wouldn’t be the first to head to Old Trafford from north London Manchester United are believed to be interested in making a move for Arsenal star Bukayo Saka. If successful, it would be the eighth time that a player has made the switch from north London to Old Trafford with Saka potentially following the same path as the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Robin van Persie and even George Graham. Saka is into the last 18 months of his current deal at the Emirates with Arsenal keen to keep the 18-year-old at the club. But Manchester United have been linked with Saka, who has caught the eye with a number of impressive displays during the current campaign. The winger, who can also play full-back, has made 15 Premier League appearances this season while also impressing in the Europa League. It’s perhaps no surprise that United are interested in the rising talent, but Saka would not be the first Arsenal player to move to Old Trafford. The last to make the move was Sanchez two years ago. Sanchez had impressed at the Emirates but struggled at United and was sent on loan to Inter Milan in the summer. Before Sanchez, it was Van Persie that made the switch with the Dutchman winning the Premier League in his first season at United. Van Persie was the first to swap north London for Old Trafford for 25 years with Viv Anderson having previously made the move. Anderson was Sir Alex Ferguson’s first signing as United manager and the former defender recently said: “I would never have left Arsenal had I not been offered a contract by Manchester United. “I was offered a contract extension by George Graham at Arsenal and the case went to a tribunal and Manchester United paid £250,000.” Frank Stapleton had left Highbury for Old Trafford in 1981 while Graham moved for £120,000 to Manchester United in December 1972. Ian Ure was the only major signing made by United manager Wilf McGuinness in 1969, spending two seasons with the club before returning to Scotland to play for St Mirren. The first to make the switch was David Herd back in 1961 with the forward being part of the squad that won the European Cup in 1968, leaving Old Trafford just two months later. Six Arsenal players to be axed to fund £150m summer spree Arsenal will look at shifting on no fewer than six players in the summer in order to raise approximately £150 million to allow Mikel Arteta to undertake a squad overhaul. The Gunners have experienced a turbulent 2019-20 campaign, with former boss Unai Emery replaced by fellow Spaniard Mikel Arteta in late December. While that decision appears to have quelled the discontent among some sections of the Emirates fanbase, results on the field have produced little improvement. The Gunners have won just one match from their eight league encounters since Arteta’s arrival, with that solo victory coming at home to Manchester United via a two-nil scoreline. Many foresee the Gunners’ squad undergoing major surgery in the summer, but the question remains of how Arsenal will raise the funds to finance such a large overhaul. Now, a report from online publication Football London has outlined the six Arsenal stars that are likely to be axed to provide Arteta with the necessary funds. Centre-halves Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi are touted as two probable departures, with the arrival of William Saliba and potential permanent transfer of Pablo Mari expected to render the former duo surplus to requirements. With Kieran Tierney and the emerging Bukayo Saka on the books, Football London state a sale for Bosnian Saed Kolasinac would ‘not be surprising in the slightest.’ Midfielders Mohamed Elneny and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are currently both out on loan, indicating their departures could be sanctioned if suitors can be found, but the bulk of the funds would be raised by the controversial sale of star centre-forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabon superstar has been a shining light for the Gunners in recent times, but with just 18 months remaining on his current deal and no extension in sight, a sale remains a possibility with Barcelona noted admirers. Gunners Head of Football Raul Sanllehi has ‘previously warned that players will not be allowed to leave the club for free,’ in the manner of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey. The article states that ‘it looks likely that the Gunners will cash in on their prized asset to fund a replacement, rather than lose him for nothing.’ The exits of all six would provide a combined figure of around ‘£148.87million’ based on current valuations.

kodded:I don't think that the choice of Pape Gueye has to do with the 4-2-3-1 formation though. It's about the quality of the player and what he can deliver on the field of play Because a guy being compared with Kante and Pogba indicates that he should be able to feature and blend well in any of 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 if you would agree with me |
