Education / 5 Most Common Nigerian Pidgin English Words and their Origin by Kelvin0(m): 1:06pm On Apr 19, 2016
"Pidgin" English or brokin English (as it is called) originated during the slave trade era as a means of communication between the Europeans and the Africans, according to a novel by Chinua Achebe "the Europeans seemed to speak through their noses" , this made communication with the locals an herculean task, thus the need to integrate the English language with their local diet for better understanding this marked the beginning of the pidgin English. It
was the language used in their business transaction.
After that era, the language stayed on as a means of communication amongst the people because of the many different African languages; In Nigeria, for example there are over five hundred different languages . like most languages, it has really evolved with new words been added at regular intervals.

Wikipedia defines Nigerian (naija) pidgin as an English-based pidgin and creole( dialect formed from two languages which has developed from a pidgin to become a first language. ) language spoken as a
lingua franca across Nigeria. Most people call it brokin English.

By implications the pidgin English we use today in our day to day verbal communication must have been coined out from two or more languages, this statement may be true to some extent.

Consider the following example

"Walk" pidgin form "Waka" (Origin:English)
As i dey " waka" my own, na so i jam Talleasty1 for road....

Also consider

"you sabi do am?" means "do you know how
to do it?" "Sabi" means "to know" or "to know
how to" just as "to know" is "saber" in
Portuguese and Spanish. Also, Pikin or
Pickaninny is from the Spanish and
Portuguese word "pequeño"/"pequeno" to
mean "small". (remember the binis n d Portuguese)

However there are some complicated forms of pidgin whose origin one can never traced, how they became very popular among our traditional pidgin is what i still find difficult to understand.

Below are five most used pidgin words in naija which cannot be said to have originated from any language whatsoever.

5. "Kuku" : how this word found itself in our day to day pidgin English remains a wonder.. Who was the first person that used it, how did the first recipient of the word decipher the meaning, maybe the language was aided with talking fingers then, who knows.

Husband: mama Tina leave my shirt

Mama Tina: I know go leave am, where Tina school fees and money for food, useless man.

Husband: lands her(mama Tina) a very serious slap

Mama Tina: (with tears rushing down her eyes) make u KUKU kill me, kill me o.. grin grin grin

4. Mama : hmm, u are probably wondering what mama is doing inside this list, when we all know it means mother, but wait! hunger dey Mama me o, lol. Na so rain Mama me yesterday from work lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

3. Knack
: this one, lol, d bad guys are already thinking spoil "Hungerbad don knack the babe tire" ewooo dem don knack my Pikin jazz.. Naijaboiy abeg wetin dey Knack for your time.

2. Una(ina) abeg if una reach class make ina keep sit for me. Hmm shooor

1. Yeye :, all this yeye children of nowadays wey no get respect for their elders go come jump enter this thread now come dey bash me

Notice the Humor in my write up. I don't create threads because of front page mind u, if that's what u do u don't have to rub it on me. Pls check my first statement again, n moreover i didn't copy anybody or Mod

ClassCaptain:
The Simple truth is that no one is responsible for anyone's single state.
.
Being single is a choice be it through character, deliberate decision or mere ignorance..
The reason why most people are single is not because no one is available, but the available are not up to taste....
This was my exact stand until i saw that thread by enusmith on front page, i mean how will u blame one gender for the singleness of the other when marriage itself is an agreement
Romance / Re: Girls Are The Major Reasons Why They Remain Single by Kelvin0(m): 6:27pm On Apr 16, 2016
In addition to the aforementioned :
Most ladies are proud, Rude, Non - submissive

Most ladies have little or no ambition

Most girls are gold diggers...yes, they want to marry already made men

Romance / Girls Are The Major Reasons Why They Remain Single by Kelvin0(m): 6:25pm On Apr 16, 2016
It seems to me this days that the easiest way to cover your shortcomings is to blame it on others. Simply put "Give a dog a bad name, n hang it "

Now let us address why most ladies remain single

- Most girls have bad manners
Many will agree with me that other than good looks, charms n well spoken English guys pay more attention to well cultured ladies when it comes to marraige, irrespective of their background. A lady without good manners is a no no to we guys, anytime, anyday.

- Most ladies are very Dirty
Yes, most ladies are very very dirty n unkept.. u'll see them outside appearing appreciably neat but when u go closer to them u'll find out they can be very dirty..this is a big turn-off for most guys (potential husbands) everyman wants a woman who can keep the house tidy n the kids neat always. I once visited a female friend off-k, n was feeling so pressed i had to ease myself in her restroom, when i was offloading d urine i something like water dripping on my head n when i looked up my eyes caught up with her undies on the rope just above my head n what i saw...Chai, i could have sworn that undies was pure white when she bought it, but now the color was between brown n black, despite the fact that she just washed them, when i got home i rubbed my hair with anointing oil, washed my hair with shampoo n hypo (the big container #130) then went straight to the nearest salon to have an emergency hair cut(Abolo). like seriously i can't Stan a dirty girl, Men generally desire ladies with good sense of hygiene. After all cleanliness, they say is next to Godliness.

- Most ladies have bad tempers
T'is true, they flare up at the slightest provocation, perhaps this wouldn't have made this list if i weren't a first hand witness to a scenario where a very close friend received a resounding slap from his ever benevolent girlfriend (yes she was benevolent with her slaps, she almost slapped the man out of my guy before they eventually broke up). To marry such a lady a man/potential husband must exhibit the patience of a god.

- Most ladies are born liars/pretenders
Wetin den no go lie about? Ranging from their age, family background, sex life... Ladies literally lie about everything, personally this is a very big turn-off for me once i discover u are a Lie on of the tribe of Judea i steer clear. I like being honest n i don't tolerate pple who tell lies most especially ladies. If u can lie about ur age, then u can definitely lie about anything.

- Most ladies are fake "Aba made" (no offense to my igbo brethren)
With the advent of social networks n the social media explosion of these generation it easier for Prophet Mohammed to confess Christ than for u to see a real "follow come babe" These days, talk less of house wife, Fake ancent, Fake boobs, Fake butts, fake color (at birth they are dark, when they become teenagers they turn fair...then at old age they become redish brown) Fake height, fake eyes, fake finger/toe nails.... Fake *una, yet they would be praying for real husbands thank God for nature they get the Fake ones too.

- Most ladies are bad cooks
I do not want to attribute cooking to any particular gender, in fact i am an advocate n a firm believer that cooking has no gender, however, an African man is always an African man, if u take a man away from good food u can't take good food away from a man. As it often said "the way to a mans heart is through his stomach ", this have never been truer save for my case..one of the Major qualities that attracted me to my gf (wife2b) was the quality of her food, even though i cook very, well for a guy. I just can't fathom how she manages to prepare delicious meals consistently. Other than the fun time we spend together one thing i always look forward to in our realtionship is her cooking, she experiments a lot in the kitchen n i love her for that. much has been said, before i retire let me quickly say this "Women who do not cook well have husbands, Women who cooks very well Keep husbands" quote me anywhere.

I agree, it's gon' be hard to take their "feeder" and say goodbye.
The cabals need to be re-integrated into the future plans of the gov't; not by bringing in products, but by going into PPP on some government owned facilities like depots, refineries, and pipelines.
Either way, they won't have a choice by the time Dangote's refinery starts running.
If Singapore (5 million population) with little or no oil, refines over 1 milion barrels/day, and Japan with all the earthquakes and tsunamis refines over 4.5million barrels/day, then we have a problem -- I mean, we should be refining all the 2.2 million barrels that we produce and more -- exporting refined products only.
No, we can't even refine a third of the 445,000 barrels that's allocated to NNPC daily -- we threw our country, our lives, our future, our kids future, our prosperity to the dogs (the cabals), we let them own this country and dictate at will, we then go to church to pray for prosperity by proxy a la 'miracles' . . . LoL.
Can you imagine Mobil has a 592,000 barrels/day nameplate refinery in Singapore, what do they have in Nigeria?

I am always impressed with pple who share similar positions as mine regarding d way forward for our country. I think u did justice to this topic , kudos, i've mailed u n followed u, pls reply.

I am not finding this lingering fuel scarcity funny anymore, what i really find funny is the fact that some APC praise singers n sai Baba chanters will still stand and defend their god. Politics / Re: Ali-Modu Sheriff: Allegations of Boko Haram Connection (What the Records Say) by Kelvin0(m): 10:47pm On Feb 17, 2016
This is a response to a recent topic on NL FP
exhorting the virtues of Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff
(SAS), absolving him of Boko Haram connections
and praising his choice as the new PDP
Chairman.
Ali Modu Sheriif has been a controversial figure
in the NE particularly and in the Nigerian polity in
general. Most of these are linked to various
allegations of his Boko Haram connections from
different sources at different times. Below is a
short synopsis of various evidences used to
back-up allegations of SAS's Boko Haram
connections:
2. Goodluck Jonathan, in April 2003, called SAS a
friend of Mohammed Yusuf, founder of Boko
Haram. As commander-in-chief of the Nigerian
Armed Forces, President Jonathan regularly has
access to a multiplicity of security reports, and
many believed he spoke from a position of
knowledge at the time.
See video evidence and transcript below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBfdhzYaABA
GEJ: … Bunkers in Maiduguri or Borno state. Why
should the bunkers come? Who wants to send
bunkers to Borno state. There are too many APCs
(armoured personnel carriers). Why should there
be APCs in Borno state? Who wants to send APcs
to Borno state? We are talking about soldiers.
There are some people even saying JTF should go.
Who wants to spend money paying allowances of
soldiers for God-sake. We need money for
development.
If the circumstances that brought the soldiers are
no longer there, that day, they will all leave.
[Audience clap clap clap]
They were not in Borno state in 2001, 2002, 2003,
up to 2009. Probably that is when ehnn this man
was killed, and that was the beginning of crises.
Ehn ehn, what is the name of ehn ehn governor
Sheriff’s friend? [Audience clapped, laughed and
echoed Yusuf].
When Yusuf was killed, that was the beginning of
the crisis…
4. A leaked security intelligence dispatch
obtained by Premium Times also suggested Mr.
Sheriff has link with the Boko Haram sect.
The memo claimed Mr. Sheriff personally
oversaw the training and deployment of fighters
from the Abeche region in Chad.
In Abeche, Mr. Sheriff operated from the lodge of
the Chadian President, Idris Deby, the memo
claimed.
After joining the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]
in July 2014, Mr. Sheriff became a close ally of
President Jonathan, and top leaders of the ruling
party thereby enjoings state protection.
After the Australian negotiator, working with the
Nigerian government, Stephen Davis, also
claimed that the sect’s top members told him
Mr. Sheriff was a key sponsor of their activities,
on December 16, the SSS exonerated Mr. Sheriff
after it paraded six men – including a former
special assistant to current Borno State
governor, Kashim Shettima. The SSS claimed the
suspects admitted fabricating the scenarios the
Australian negotiator relied on to make his
claims.
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/
headlines/174000-video-shows-president-
jonathan-linking-ex-borno-governor-ali-modu-
sheriff-boko-haram.html
These are just tips of the iceberg. This article is
to keep in focus the focus of the outrage
following SAS' announcement as the new PDP
Chairman before the narrative is lost due to
politicking. When a lie is told consistently, it
starts becoming the truth.
I reckon there are more documented pieces of
evidence but these should make for a good
discussion. Please add more if you have come
across such.
Thank You and God Bless.

After this your lopsided analysis the big question still is "Why has SAS " not been arrested and charged to court.

myners007:
Its not surprising that such statement is coming from the British because they are the most cunning and pretentious set of people in the world today. These same people will extol the virtues of Jonathan when he was in power for their own aggrandizement and insult him publicly when he is out just for the purpose of benefiting from Buhari Administration.
As long as I am concerned Jonathan deserved to be treated well because he was never overzealous to remain in power.
The British/economist Group should put their house in order before castigating others. My Questions for them are listed below:
1. Why was Princess Diana brutally killed without a trace yet not even the Queen nor the British government was labeled as treacherous and murderous buffoon?
2. Who stole away our artifacts during the illegal invasion and massacre of Benin?
3. Why did the British diplomatically hoodwinked USA into World War 2 when it was becoming apparent that they will concede defeat to the Germans led by Hitler?
4.Why will the British regard themselves as one of the world and economic powers when they produce virtually nothinh apert from extorting money from their citizens and other Nationals under the guise of taxation.
5. why cant Prince Charles be allowed to rule if he is competent?
Nigerians please do not be perturbed by their invectives on GEJ. We know them already cos we are better than them.
N.B

So many persons have quoted me for the wrong reason by supporting the humliliating and scandalousb write up against our immediate past president. If a Nigerian paper or group should write anything bad against the Govt of England or the Queen they would have demanded for immediate apology or resorted to the indiscriminate deportation of law abiding Nigeriana living in the UK.
Remember oyr National Pledge for the sake of Patriotism
I PLEDGE to Nigeria My Country
To be FAITHFUL,LOYAL and HONEST
To Serve Nigeria with all my STRENGHT
To DEFEND her UNITY,UPHOLD her( HONOUR) and GLORY
So Help Me God.
I remain loyal and hold nobody any apology on my stands to defend Nigeria. Thank You.
