Thanks for the answer , appreciate. Obviously, I would be doing veggies and top on me list are: Capsicum, tomatoes and Cucumber.
I might try amend some of my beds with cocopeat to see if it helps or bring in soil from else where and put them in planter bags to grow the plants inside.

our visit to a client farm at Ijebu Igbo for the land treatment necessitate this thread. We did the soil analysis and the outcome of the analysis made it imperative for us to balance/ameliorate the soil PH of the farm land to maximise yield.

Are you still contemplating on whether you need to do your farm soil analysis, consider it a wise decision to analyse your farm soil.

What you stand to gain by analysing your soil is enormous. Subsistence farming has gone pass the era of just burying seeds in the ground and go home to sleep with with your two eyes close.

Some farm land soil lack vital nutrients (macro & micro). Don't you think having an idea of the nutrient composition of your soil will help you know which treatment to give your farm soil?

Treating a farm soil include introducing the lacking nutrient into your soil, neutralising the highly concentrated one, balancing the soil PH amongst others.

Also, a high PH soil indicate the need to .......... and low Soil PH indicate the need to ...........

However, when the PH of the soil is known, it help you to know the type of crop to plant on your farm land. As a matter of fact, some crop strive well in a soil with high soil PH while some other crop strive best in a soil with low PH.

If this is scientifically proved, what do you think will be of your crop at harvest time when you fail to do soil analysis and go ahead to plant your crop that strive well in Low PH soil on your farm land with high Soil PH??

I have soil test kit and I did mine twice to validate the first test-
My soil is Alkaline but I have a very high level of phosphorus in the soil so I am wondering would the 7.5 range my result showed prevent my plant from accessing the high Phosphate in the soil.
I have been a little concerned about the phosphate level as my fish blood and bone meal contains lots of phosphorus: Ratio 4:7:4

7.5 PH Is not on the high PH. It is optimal and can not prevent your crop from accessing the nutrient available. I must say that you may have challenge with your crop if you go ahead to plant a crop that do not strive well in alkaline soil on your farm. If you intend planting a crop that strive well in alkaline soil, that good. But if you intend planting crop that strive well in acidic soil, then you need to ameliorate your soil before planting the acid loving crop on your farm.....cheers

Effects of Fire on Soil Physical Properties

Fire may alter several physical soil properties, such as soil structure, texture, porosity, wetability, infiltration rates, and water holding capacity. The extent of fire effects on these soil physical properties depends on fire intensity, fire severity, and fire frequency. Low intensity fires do not cause enough soil heating to produce significant changes to soil physical properties.

Below is a picture of my experimental farm under pre-planting operations.

This farm is purely for experimental purpose. we intend to investigate the following.
1. productivity of various sources of hybrid sucker
2. Effect of selected herbicide on the farm
3. The effect of Bush burning on a farmland
4. Effect of tilling the soil on growth/size when cultivating plantain suckers
5. e.t.c

2. Second clearing:

This clearing involve:
1. Further cutting of the weed so as to make the soil visible
2. Root out the roots of the weeds/ trees.
3. Burning the cut down weed/ trees. But ensure you don't spread the burning to cover the entire farmland (Check my post Effect of bush burning via the Lin below)

4. Application of Herbicide(s) to the farm land to further kill the weed
We applied Systemic herbicide for the following reasons:
a. It penetrate deep into the root to kill the weed root
b. This practice prolong the time it will take for the weed to grow back
c. This practice prevent the weed from growing early thereby competing with the sucker for nutrients
We experimented two types of systemic herbicide (name withheld). We intend to evaluate which is the best. After application of the 2systemic herbicide on different locations of the farm land, the farm is left for 10days for the herbicides to fully work on the weeds

However, if your newly acquired farm land is been used for farming before, you may not clear it second time because after the first clearing the soil should be visible to plant. Also, if you are doing mechanical clearing ( NOT using how and cutlass), then second clearing may not be necessary.

I have to say our second clearing was necessitated because our new experimental farm is a virgin land and we used manual clearing (use of how & cutlass).

Nevertheless, the picture below shows how the farm look like after second clearing...

stay clued to this post. I will visit the farm again after 10days to exermine how well the herbicide worked, which one of the herbicide kill the weed the more, names of the herbicides and pictures evidence of the two herbicide action.

My One acre farm establishment pre-planting to post planting operations

As I will be explaining in details the step-by-step procedure to establishing a one acre farm land we just acquire for this season experimental farm with pictures. We intend to experiment some hybrid suckers.

STEP 1

At this step, we go into process involve in acquisition of the one acre farm land and Land clearing. The acquisition of this farm land was not complicated because the land was bought from my land lord. We bought 10acres from him years back and then securing another one acre from him was not a problem.

Starting a farm land start from land acquisition. You may rent or buy outrightly. However, if you are going into plantain cultivation, we advise you purchase the land. This is because plantain plantation farm rip more income from their plantation in subsequent season since investment in subsequent season is infinitesimal. Thus, if you have rented the land and the owner decide to make use of the land after 2years it means you lost the Profit.

Our newly acres farmland is a virgin land with thick bush, with plenty of Jethrova plant and Akintola plant. Thereby making it a tedious bush to clear.

How fast your newly acquired farm is cleared and the cost of clearing is a function of type of weed or trees on the farm. All we are saying is if there are tough weeds/ trees with deeply rooted root on your farm land it may cost you more cash and take a longer time to clear the farm. Basically the charge for clearing a farm land bush depends on :
1. Type of weed/tree on the land
2. Location of your farm
3. whether or not you are using Mechanical method
⁴. Number of labourers that will be hired

In all, it cost us #30,000 + to do the first clearing of our experimental farm.
Clearing of our farm was in this steps:

1. First clearing : This involve cutting down the Trees and tough weed. But note that at the end of our first clearing, the land was not clean enough for planting suckers so that lead us to second clearing. First clearing cost us #30,000

Soil pH is a measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. It is an important indicator of soil health. It affects crop yields, crop suitability, plant nutrient availability, and soil micro-organism activity, influencing key soil processes. Soil pH can be managed by practices such as applying the proper amount of nitrogen fertilizer, liming, and using cropping systems that increase soil organic matter content and improve overall soil health.

General tips for applying fertilizer

1. All fertilizers should preferably be applied before sowing.
2. Fertilizer should preferably be broadcast uniformly and harrowed in.
3. All fertilizers that contain soluble phosphates should preferably be applied in wide bands of between 2.5 and 5 cm on each side of thee rows of seeds at a depth of 10 to 15 cm.
4. The superphosphate fertilizer should preferably be mixed with farmyard manure (in particular organic manure from dairy farms works excellent.)
5. Fertilizer types that include sulphate of ammonia can be used as a top dressing, but do not apply this type of fertilizer when the leaves of the plants are wet.
6. The application of fertilizer should preferably be followed by watering when applied to irrigated crops.
7. When fertilizing fruit trees, the fertilizer should preferably be applied to the soil under the crown. The crown is the area about a few meters away from the trunk. As the tree grows this crown area expands and then fertilizer should also be applied as per the crown of the fruit tree.

Yes downshifting from d4 to d2 when approaching bad road does not have any effect on the engine. It is just the same thing as manual where u can downshifting from gear 4 or 5 to 3 or 2. Rather it has an advantage as it engine braking which would make ur brake pads last longer.

DR is for normal driving where the computer takes care of the shifting for u. It is the normal way automatics should be driven. Fuel consumption depends on ur pattern of driving, whether u are a heavy footer or a gentle one. When climbing a slope and ur engine is loosing power and the computer is not downshifting for u, u can just downshift to d1 and ur gear will remain in gear 1 for easy climbing.

D2 means the gear will not shift past gear 2, D3 means it won't shift past gear 3 etc. Just in manual. So let's say u are driving manual and going down the slope on gear 5 and I want to down shift to gear 2 for engine braking, u can also do that with manual by shifting to d2. U don't need to match the brake to shift from D to d1 or d2 etc. And if I are on gear 5 and want to down shift to a lower hear u can ways use the shift in automatic to do it.

Also, do you think Driving constantly with D4 (I.e both on high speed and very slow motion) has any negative effect on the gear, engine or fuel consumption?

In tropical rain forests part of Nigeria, organically rich soils are shallow. Plantains will thrive for one to three years but then die back because the layer of organic matter is easily depleted. To avoid depletion, it is necessary to provide soils with compost and mulch.

2. Poor organic content in the soil

4. Climatic condition of the farm location
