Plantain farm Post planting operations in steps: Step1. 4 Weeks after transplanting, the suckers will be due for the first weeding. Weeding is to be done with hoe and nut cutlass to reduce mortality. If herbicide will be used, it must be done by kenfarm trained staff. This is because it has to be done professionally so that the herbicide does not touch the growing suckers. Touching the sucker leaf will obstruct their growth. Step2: Just after the first weeding, you are to observe the plantain farm to see if there are suckers that did not germinate. If mortality is recorded then replanting of the sucker on that spot needed to be done asap. Step3: 6 weeks after transplanting the suckers, NPK fertilizer is to be applied. The Quantity to apply and the method of application is stated in the soil test report. A 70kg bag of NPK fertilizer can take care one acre (1000pcs) of suckers. Step4: 24 weeks after transplanting, the hybrid suckers needs organic manure. The Quantity and method of application is spelt out in the soil test report. Step5: 26 weeks after transplanting, heaping of the base of the suckers with sand must be done. However, step 4 and 5 can be done together to safe cost. But if you have a residence worker on the farm, then it should not be done together. Step6: 36 weeks after transplanting, application of liquid organic fertilizer can be done. The fertilizer is specific for bigger fruit because the active ingredient is targeted towards improving the size of the fruit. However, if you have access to potash (eru), you may add to the base of each stand. Or you may purchase a 50kg bag of Murat of potash. This step is optional though. CAUTION 1. If all the above steps are followed meticulously, then at 28 weeks, the suckers should attain puberty. At 36 weeks the suckers should start following and at 48weeks, the suckers should start fruiting. 2. All the steps above (both cassava and suckers) need adequate supervision by an experience farmer. The operation is not to be left in the hands of the workers who usually don’t do them well enough. 3. Also it is very important to note that a source of water is to be provided for the suckers for the dry season. As water is the driving force for the growth of plantain sucker. Lack of water leads to slow growth rate and most times leads to small fruit. 4. If you have not gotten a residence staff, then I can help you import a Benue man so you negotiate charges with him. NB: If you need to do organic farming you can consult with kenfarm Cheers!!

MERITS OF SOIL FERTILITY TESTING 1. It enable farmer identify the level of nutrient in the soil. The soil test will also indicate if the nutrient available can be taken up by the plant or it available and yet can not be taken up by plant for use 2. It indicates the soil PH. Every crop has a soil pH in which it can strive. If a crop that strive in alkaline soil is planted on acidic soil, then mortality rate will increase 3. It indicates the soil macro nutrient and micro nutrient. Tree crops need lot of macro nutrient. Palm tree for example needs Mg in abundance. Mg is responsible for the red colour of the fruit. How reddish your palm fruit is determine largely the market value it will command because Mg determines the quality of your oil 4. It indicates the physical chrematistics of the farm soil. Physical characteristics of the farm soil has effect on the farm management style, fruit yield and mortality rate. 5. It indicates the Quantity of fertilizer to apply to each palm tree, the type of fertilizer and the method of application to adopt. The level of the nutrient will indicate all these. Over application of fertilizer and under application of fertilizer has a negative effect on the crop. 6. It indicate your farm soil textural class. Thus, if a soil test was not don on your farm soil before commencing planting operations, it not late to ascertain the farm soil fertility by conducting a soil test. Am suggesting this base on the mortality you said was experienced on the farm recently. Nevertheless, it is still left to farm owner to decide on doing a soil test or not Cheers!! |

Farmers complain that their plantain plantation do not produce again after 3seasons I have been in this Biz long enough to authoritatively tell you that your plantain plantation can keep producing fruits for as long as you want it to produce (Maybe 10-20yrs) First you will agree with me that sucker never die but keep multiplying as long as enviromental conditions are favourable. Now, if you want your plantain plantation to keep producing fruits for so many yrs , then you have to control for the following factors: 1. Plant a viable and desease free sucker like that which you will get from kenfarm 2. Always do what we call gapping every new season 3. Add compost manure like poultry waste to your farm soil every 2season 4. Seek expertise knowledge 5. Do a soil test to ascertain your farm soil fertility at the end of 3seasons I can go on and on.......consult kenfarm for details For all those who is been calling us to inform us of how educative our thread is, we say thank you. It for this reason kenfarm post information that are life experience on field and not google copy and paste kind of info
