All the environmental and Biological factors farmers are contending with this days, it will be erroneous for you to invest in the farm land without a knowledge of the land History or a knowledge of the soil fertility. What it will cost you to have a full knowledge of the farm soil is not up to 2% of what you will lose in your investment if you do not have a knowledge if the farm History/fertility Invest wisely today!!!!! |

With the climate change together with global warming, it is technically obvious the rain fall pattern has totally changed to the direction not favourable to farmers in any way. If you are a farmer that depends on rain water as your source if water for your crop, you will observe what we call "August Break" is almost going into extinction. Last season and this season, we did not feel the impact of "August Break" Last season, some of the farm I consult for had similar challenge in respect to poor yield which obviously was attributed to poor rain fall. The set back the lack of rain caused and may cause again this season is enormous. Base on this, kenfarm strongly advise commercial farmers and potential farmers to include irrigation installations in their budget as the present rain fall pattern is becoming irregular. How is the rain fall pattern around your farm area?? |

Are yu aware that the type of spacing you adopt when planting your sucker is base on how good yur soil fertility is. Where yur soil is lacking lot of NPK then spacing out will be a huge advantage to your crop. Also the type of crop that has been cultivated on the farm land before yu acquire the farm land can give a clue to the level of fertility of the soil. This means if a crop known to be heavy feeder has been cultivated on that farmland for over 6yrs back2back without practising shifting cultivation, then we can assure yur it paramount yu test for level of nutrient left in the soil before planting Cheers!! |

Note the observation below from kenfarm......info useful to farmers clearing their farmland at the moment!! In some cases, farmers will usually like to Rake the farm to remove all dead weed cum burnt sticks but we usually advise that the dead weeds and the burnt sticks should be left on the farm land to decay. The more they decay, the more microbial activities increase which inderectly increase the organic matter concentration on the soil. When the soil organic matter increase, reuptake of nutrient increase and Evapotranspiration reduce leading to increase in moisture content of the soil. Hence, do not clean up the farm land completely with Rake. Inorganic manure enrich the soil over a long period of time. Also note that the use of herbicide is to be reduced at this period as the rain pours down insesantly and applying herbicide just after a rain fall or just before the rain fall is a waste of time. The rain water will dilute the concentration of the herbicide and your application will amount to a waste of precious time and resources. Rather, do manual weeding with the appropriate farm tools at this rainy season Cheers!!

6 REASONS WHY SOME FARMERS FAIL People don’t just fail. People fail because they fail do certain things that they ought to do. The farming industry is replete of many farmers who have given up. Let’s quickly explore the six vital reasons why they failed. 1. They are absent. Absentee farmers will always fail. To succeed in farming, you must be around your farm most of the time one way or the other. 2. They do it alone. Those who do the farming business just by themselves without meaningful and proper interactions with farmers that matters will pack up sooner or later. No one can succeed alone. A smart farmer knows that there are webs of interactions with farmers, vets, nutritionists and other notable professionals that will make farming successful. 3. They like cheap inputs instead of going for quality. A cheap mentality at the expense of productivity will always lead to frustrations. When a farmer is fanatical about cheap inputs, he is digging his business grave. 4. They bite more than they can chew. Some farmers, in a bid to make it big fast will take on more than they can handle financially and technically. And of course they will crash! 5. They don’t keep proper records. Structures and order usually bring increase. What you don’t measure may not grow and may even die. 6. They focus more on work than science. One Israeli prime minister once said that agriculture is 95 percent science and 5 percent work. When a farmer focuses more on activities than the laid down scientific obligations, he is bound to fail. Example is failing to test yur soil fertility before cultivation Number 3 is more common and applicable to those who compromise standard. When you go for cheap sucker thinking you are playing smart, often time at harvest you will realise you have made a huge mistake. |

Vital info for new plantain plantation owner The info was necessary because of Qs new and potential plantain farmer usually ask on my SM pages 1. When a sucker is 6months, it has attain puberty and any treatment in terms of nutrient addition is a pure waste of time and resources. All nutrient application is to be done b4 the sucker is 6months. It takes the sucker 5-6months to take all it need to produce good fruit from the soil. Any further application of nutrient after 6months will only make the sucker pseudo-stem grow fatter. I don't think you intend to sell the pseudo-stem 2. A sucker stem that has not bear a fruit will always continue to grow even when it cut off. But the moment it bear fruit it has completed it life-cycle. So whether you cut it or not, it will whether off. This is the reason we often cut off the sucker after cutting off the bunch. Cutting off the sucker will enable more offspring to shoot out around the parent. 3. After 4weeks of transplanting, always apply fertilizer (NPK 12:12:17). If you have access to potash (Eru from Aro) then apply to the base of each stand. When the sucker attain puberty, then heap soil round the base to fortify the root and to enhance more suckers growing around the parent. For more info, contact kenfarm Cheers!! |
