malakiMal:
Guys im in a serious pickle and scared at the moment.

So when i was 20 i applied for study permit. At the time i was doing nysc and working in tech (entry level) but in my SOP. I inly said that i was doing NYSC. I didnt mention that i worked as i didnt want them to know i was doing nysc and working because i was supposed to be working in my PPA but was running it as i needed tech experience.

In my work permit i also didnt declare this work experience as i had work lined up in canada so i just used that and didnt bother using anything else as i thought it didnt matter.

Now in my pr application i declared the experience i did in nigeria. I added reference letter, offer letter and a picture of me and my colleagues at work. Im now seeing that people are getting misrepresentation ban for what i did and i dont know what to do.

Im in canada and all my experience shows progress and i have the documents for them. I make a good living here now and have a son on the way. How could i make such a silly mistake that can ruin my life. Has anyone else gone through this successfully? Should I submit an LOE or just wait from word from IRCC?

Funny thing is I received my study permit at the work place. I have proof from VFS canada that my passport was sent to the work address im claiming for work experience. this all is just making me super paranoid.
You can withdraw your PR application and apply again when you can only use experience outside the one you didn't mention initially. You need to stay consistent. I think you will be fine as long as they haven't acted on your current application and flag it. But if they flag it before your withdrawal then it could be a big problem so I think

Really jedisco? Is this really who you are? I never knew that you are a bigot, so why do we come down gun blazing on the issue of racism in the UK if this is your views about the Igbos?

To say that i'm shocked reading this from you is an understatement, i'm so disappointed in you and you have to be shamed of the character you displayed here.

I have zero respect for anybody that expresses such view about another tribe
I don't think he is a bigot. He is just one of those guys that overdo just to prove a point.
The area he took the conversation was unnecessary and unhelpful.
Besides, while I understand the point he is trying to make which is reasonable, he is making it in a wrong way cos the Indians are not our allies, don't give a damn about blacks and are not united themselves so i don't see any reason to bring your own people tribal fault lines just to defend them.

One of the problems they are having in canada is this anger that they have brought their hindu vs Punjab fight to Canada and now killing themselves on Canadian soil compared to Nigerain tribes that have coexisted peacefully in a foreign land.

gforce5:
It pisses me off when Nigerians in Nigeria mock Nigerians in the diaspora as "second class" citizens who "clean the white man's yash and wash toilets". The disrespect is off the chain. Nigerians in America are the most educated immigrants in the country. All my classmates from high school have top jobs in the States. Even in the UK, where I spent a quarter of my life, most Nigerians I know have professional jobs. Many work in the city, have their own firms, work in the public & private sector. Nigerians in the diaspora are the biggest investors in Nigeria after foreign companies. Compared to most immigrant groups abroad, Nigerians, especially 1st generation Nigerians, tend to be more invested in their country of origin than others. Many families are surviving because of the contributions of family members abroad. Nigerians abroad invest heavily in the property market in Nigeria. They are even the biggest tourists in their own country. Who do you think make up the majority of "dirty december" tourists? It's Nigerians in the diaspora bringing necessary forex into the country. Many Nigerians abroad work 2-3 jobs just to provide for their families back home. What have Nigerians living in Nigeria done for their own country apart from being zombies supporting mediocrity?
My brother we don't need their appreciation. Majority of those mocking Nigerians abroad are frustrated themselves. Most don't have much going for them in Nigeria and have tried and failed to relocate. So mocking people abroad is like a coping mechanism for them, if you can't have it then denigrate it to feel better, that's what they do.
Anyone doing well in Nigeria doesn't have that time and interest to be mocking people. In general, poor people have the sharpest and viral mouth. They can insult your generation. They are the masters of insults and mockery of others. They don't appreciate anything. Give a poor person money now, he will call it tachiri money grin

I helped someone months ago. Wife developed complications during pregnancy and he was running helter skelta looking for money to save his wife. He asked for 500k loan, I gave him. Months later, I saw his post on Facebook mocking Nigerians abroad as doing odd jobs to survive and looking for "3rd class citizenship ". He said he will rather live like a king in Nigeria than have "3rd class citizenship "
This is a "king" who tried to migrate years back, wrote IELTS about 4 times but didn't make it and he gave up, this is a "king" who is still owing someone abroad 500k up till today and not even talking about it. If I ask him now about the money, he will say I'm disturbing him cos of tachiri money. I have more examples of this kind of behavior

Poor or frustrated people and bad mouth can't be separated. On one hand, they beg you for assistance and on the other hand, they insult and mock the same helper cos of envy and jealousy

many have sold lekki properties to Japa ooo .
What if they sold it to buy another abroad? They probably did not sell it cos they are looking for proof of fund or money for survival.

A friend of mine sold his Lekki home a year after japaing to invest in real estate abroad. You can argue whether it makes sense or not but that was his choice.
As our faces are different so also our needs, mentality and what we want to achieve in life differs. For example, I want to live a good life and I don't care about being "rich". If it comes, fine, if not, I'm interested in living a quality life, others may have different interests.

HEAVEN4444:
I specifically said those selling properties. Meaning you are a made man. Mafioso. In mafioso they use that term lol. Made man
I keep hearing this phrase, selling properties to japa all the time and I'm wondering what properties are people selling.
I hope you guys are not counting people selling lands and properties of 10m as selling properties, ,that's less than $10k.

Have you ever seen someone who owns a duplex in say lekki valued at over 200m sell it to japa? In the first place, people who own that kind of valuable properties will always have a way of raising money to japa without selling their properties that's if they really want to japa.

Nobody sells a real valuable property to japa cos people who have those kind of properties are usually well to do. People who sell properties to japa are people in the struggling category who sell to raise few millions to aid their travel. If they are traveling as legal permanent residents not students, chances are in few years they can easily replace what they sold. Those their "properties" are easily replaceable as they are small dollars worth.

So this phrase people selling properties to japa is not as bad as internet warriors try to make it if we put it in a proper context

Just to add. So far I have mostly seen cases of illegal immigrants with criminal records being deported. But the MSM would not tell you this... You can't be illegal and being committing crime up and down. Who does that ?..... Would any country open it's borders for all ex-convicts, murderers and rapist ?
My brother every president before Trump deported people. Biden deported more than 1.5m human beings. Obama was nicknamed deporter in chief. His deportation record is highest of any president till date yet there wasn't any brouhaha about it. This is because for normal people, it doesn't give joy to deport people but then it still has to be done. The only difference now is that somebody likes to dehumanize people.

For Trump, dehumanizing people validates his toughness. It gives him joy. Otherwise he can carry out deportations like others have done without creating a spectacle out of it. It is not really about deportation for him, it is about the show. At the end of the day, I won't be surprised that he might not even deport up to the number others have deported but he will make the most noise with it.

BTW, I belive this thread is for Nigerians in Canada to share experiences, help each other and build a community not a congregation for Nigerians (even those not in Canada) who hate Indians to mast**bate on.

What has changed? How come there is so much focus on spreading hate for another moreso than bettering ourselves? We've seen such narratives in Nigeria of people blaming other groups for their problems even to the extent of widespread religious riots- where did that lead us?

I'm not one to gate speech and all thoughts are welcome. But so little has been said of Trumps threats and the direction of the US toward Canada (which if true would have far-reaching consequences for us) - whereas many posts over most recent pages has been about hate towards Indians- even those in countries we have not visited. We are better than this!
We should remember that in pointing at others, four fingers point back at us.
Indians are more hostile to blacks in the west than whites. Sometimes whites may have small conscience but most Indians don't. Despite being immigrants themselves, the black immigrant community can't count on Indians as allies cos they see themselves as superior to us.

Those days, ALL the interviews I went for where an Indian is the hiring manager never worked. The only ones that worked where the ones with white managers.

In a country pushing DEI, these guys will flood everywhere with their people not because they are that good but pure acute nepotism. Go to some Tim Hortons and Walmart stores they are managing, the workers there are 99% Indians including ones that can't speak audible English. What happens to giving 60% of the slot to Indians and 40% to other immigrants?

They show no mercy to other immigrants so I don't give a damn about them too. We didn't come to a white man country only to come and suffer racism from them too in addition to white people. So I clearly understand why folks are calling them out
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by Kenn55: 6:14pm On Jan 25, 2025
jedisco:
To conclude: recently, we were told how Trump would cut Indians to size. It's still early days but boy, he's signed a number of executive directives. I'm yet to see any which would disproportionately affect indians.

Bringing an end to DEI (which aimed to adress racial disparities in attainment borne from centuries of unfair treatment) would see more Asians (of which indians make a good chunk) in top Americans colleges and subsequently help them into top jobs. Oddly, black Africans might be the most affected as most migrating few who were on average higher attaining than African Americans so were able to ride their wave (I believe) into good spots.

Ending citizenship by birth (though unlikely to hold) would mostly affect Latinos and South-American migrants.

Nothing has been said about H1B visa yet but already hundreds of billions of dollars is being poured into AI - leading the crew is Soft Bank CEO- Masayochi Son who is Korean-Japanese. Remember tech leaders tend to favour immigration and if the recent body movements by them is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised that while Trump uses border closure and some deportations as a news headline to keep MAGA happy, he secretly listens to tech heads and opens up the work visa pathway. We can guess who'd form most of the beneficiaries. The endgame from the previous two points i.e more Indians in uni and less bottlenecks in job places for them would only see more Indians getting H1B spots.

Furthermore, more Indians getting into highly paid tech jobs would create the PR that'd lead to an increased admittance of Indians in the west as many would look to replicate the success of big American tech by getting talent all over the world. We can see this in the UK who might soon announce an AI visa. Ultimately, these Indians in high places would create the network effect that'd see more come in or certain jobs being offshored to India- No fret! its how the world works.

To be clear, while I'm against ending DEI, I have no qualms with Indians getting spots they have worked hard for. It's still early days and some of these are postulations but I can only wonder what African folks who supported Trump in the hope that he'd fight Indians for them think now. Oddly, though a small cohort participated, it appears Indians like Trump

And before someone start mumbling racist jibes e.g 'type of indians e.t.c', they should look at history and find out the type of Brits UK sent to Australia and where both nations are today.
That visual you attached is really interesting but I'm not surprised. I have always known that Trump's presidency will deal the west a major blow and benefit American adversaries. In Trump's world, allies will be enemy while enemies will be friends.
The next 4 years presents China an opportunity to deal a major irreversible blow to the west thanks to Trump

In recent years, the "Japa syndrome"—the mass emigration of Nigerians to other countries—has become a hot topic. Many believe that leaving the country is the only way to secure a brighter future, with better job opportunities, education, and quality of life.

But is this the only solution? Some argue that staying in Nigeria and working to improve the system is more fulfilling, while others feel the opportunities abroad are too good to ignore.

Let’s discuss:

Is "Japa" a short-term escape or a long-term solution?

Can Nigeria ever become a place where its citizens thrive without wanting to leave?

For those who have left, is life abroad as easy as it seems?

well to be fair, I know a fair bit of market men and women, bus drivers, bricklayers and artisans who own their own homes and cars in enugu plus a second home in their villages (some of which are still in the same enugu state). I'm sure you know a few too. They are not rich, just lower middle class.
Upper middle class would be people earning at least 5 million but less than 10 million a month.
Rich should be above 10 million a month. So in essence, many lower middle class people in Nigeria own their own homes.
The problem is that a huge percentage (70%) of Nigerians are actually poor (That would be people who earn less than 300k a month today.)
I get your point but that is not the issue. My brother anyone can own a house. The poor can also own a house, the question is where is the house?
Abroad too, it is the same thing. People in those small towns and rural areas own their houses. In fact, they build by themselves. Most of them are into Agriculture etc.
The John in my example can own a home in other states outside Lagos but will he go to work from there to Lagos daily?
Someone working in Toronto can go to small town or rural Canada to own a home but can he work from there? What will be the value to his daily living?

Anybody can own a house but where do they own it cos everywhere doesn't have the same value. Do you understand my point now?

I'm using Lagos cos that is where the professional opportunities are. Remember I'm not talking about business people, I'm talking about working class people in the middle class category.

You know what started my response to you is your comment on mortgage. You made it look like a bad thing. I'm trying to tell you that the reason middle class Nigerians abroad can't pay outright cash for a house in say London, New York, Toronto etc. is the same reason middle class John can't buy a house in Lagos.

I'm eagerly waiting for this election. I can't wait to vote out those nonsense liberals no matter who leads them. They are the ones that caused Trump and all the far right guys sweeping the west now to come back. Common sense dem no get.

We export oil to US at a discount not because Canada is caring but because the stupid liberals and their environmental rubbish have made sure no pipeline or oil and gas infrastructure is built in the country so there is no other choice than to sell the oil to the US. Then the US now sells their own oil in the international market at real prices making quick gain on oil sales.
US buys 4m barrels a day of oil from Alberta at discounted price and sell the equivalent amount of their own oil abroad at higher prices and Trump still insult Canada join. Trudeau needs to be flogged.

Good points you made, albeit long.
However you miss a few things.
1. The post was about upper class Nigerians throwing in the towel to move abroad because they believe 'naija don cast'. They may end up living a life below the standard they left behind. It doesn't include John. Someone earning 1m today is similar to someone who was earning 250k in 2015. They are not upper class Nigerians.

2. There are mortgage loans in Nigeria too. The criteria is different from abroad but it is there and thousands of Nigerians who know are using it.

3. Lagos is not the only city in Nigeria. There are at least 37 other cities. Most are cheaper than lagos. Less than 12% of Nigerians live in Lagos. 200 million duplex in enugu is a mansion.
Relocating abroad has never been for the rich and poor. It is the middle class guys like John are the ones relocating.
What the rich guys do is to maintain one leg abroad but not to permanently live there. They can get foreign passport to aid their travels, access better healthcare in those countries, education for their kids etc but a middle class person can't do that so what do they do? They migrate.
The problem is that lots of people here can't separate between middle class and rich people. They expect middle class Nigerians abroad to compete with rich people in Nigeria just to win argument that Nigeria is the best thing since slice bread grin

you mean 'and mortgage one in Canada' if I hear say dem fit buy
So the average Joe in Lagos can buy a house abi? Rich people anywhere in the world can afford to pay cash for a house. You are comparing rich Nigerians to average Nigerians abroad. Compare average Nigerians in Nigeria and abroad.

Have you bought a house in Lagos before? Do you know how much it takes to buy a 3 bedroom terraced duplex? In common Ogudu, you can't buy anything reasonable with less than 200m naira not to talk of high brow areas of Lagos.

John is a brilliant Nigerian, graduated and got a job in Lagos where he earns 1m naira a month. Let's assume John will rely on his salary only, no corruption involvement to make extra money. Let's assume John will save 10m a year from his salary, how many years will John save up to 200m to buy a house in Ogudu? By the time he saves that amount the houses prices have jumped to 300m.
So what option does John have to buy a house in Lagos where he lives and work since he doesn't want to rent forever? Start looking for corrupt ways to enrich himself to make money faster, looking for somebody to use for rituals to make money, becoming a politician etc. With his legitimate income, he can never own a property in Lagos, this is why there is too much corruption and ritual killings in Nigeria.

However, if John lives abroad, the system tells John, get 5% of the cost of the house, we will give you mortgage to buy it. Pay the balance for 20 or 25 years. John buys the house and start enjoying it immediately while he keeps paying the balance. Each month John pays his mortgage, he reduces the amount he owes on the house. If after 5 years or anytime John gets tired of the house, he can sell it back and pay back the remaining balance he is owing on the house. Luckily for him, in most cases, the house he bought for 200m would have appreciated to like 210m after 5 years so he makes some good profit on the house.

So you can see that John can actually enjoy a better life without being rich or putting his hands into corruption or bad things to make crazy money. With this, there is less corruption in the society, nothing like ritual killings or desperation to make millions. Everybody benefits both rich and poor.
But Nigeria tells people like John to get rich or die trying, there is no in-between. The result is why our society is what it is today.

Most Nigerians abroad are common and average middle class Nigerians like your daily workers in Lagos. So if an average worker in Lagos can't cough out like 200m to buy a house outright in Lagos, how do you expect an average worker abroad to cough out hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a house outright?

You are right in some aspects of your comment. However, due to the tariffs, the Canadian economy will be hit more and could enter a recession, while the USA will be less affected by the after-effects of the tariffs compared to Canada—especially considering the economic power base of Canada, which is Ontario. Personally, I will not keep any cash; holding about CAD 10,000 in Canadian dollars is too risky given the current situation. It is the right time for Canada to look into other ways to stop its over-reliance on the USA for survival.
Trump is the most clueless politician I have ever seen. No strategy, no coherence, no knowledge just rant on social media.
At a time China is breathing down their neck trying to overtake them by forming alliances and pumping money into them like Belt and Road, BRICS, threatening the dollar etc, Trump is tearing down America's own alliances that has backed it.

Only Trump is initiating an economic war with Canada Mexico, China,Europe etc. If Trump implements those tariffs, there would be retaliatory tariffs against US exporters too. Let me see how US exporters, currency and economy will thrive when Canada, Mexico, EU,China etc. slam their own tariff on America.
Trade wars are lose lose for anyone that is why it is used for specific industries to protect local industries but for Trump, tariffs is a "beautiful" word and that is why he wants to apply it across board.

It's going to hurt Canada for sure but that would spur them to diversify trade away from the US which will be beneficial in the long run. The reliability of the US has kept them as number 1 all these while but their unreliability will bring their downfall. I won't be surprised traditional US allies drifting towards China in coming years thanks to Trump. Trump is a gift to China

The bold is right. Just that migration via study has been the most dependable route to exit Nigeria, else many wouldn't have been able to do so. Unfortunately it is no longer dependable. In other to correct the mistakes they made in the last 3 years, they idiot prime minister is now tightening things. The golden generation of migrants from Nigeria to the western world in a very long time.

Curious, why do people still die put on top Canada matter upon all the news and videos?
The simple answer to your question is greed, overconfidence and unbelievable deterioration of Nigeria if you ask me.
Greed in the sense that people have become too greedy. They think they can "make it" irrespective of what their situation is once they land. To make matters worse, it is now easier to migrate than years back cos people have found a way to deceive embassies with fake POF. Just with few hundred thousands, you can get 50m naira in your account as POF courtesy of rogue bankers and their network.
So what is happening now is influx of people who by reality shouldn't be anywhere near Canada now trooping in cos they have found a way to bypass the POF requirements that is supposed to help their lives.
The thinking among these set of people is "make we just enter Canada first". They feel overconfident that they can survive even if they are coming empty handed because in their mind the suffer they have suffered in Nigeria has made them resilient.
Then the unbelievable deterioration of Nigeria added fuel to fire. When you earn 200k in Lagos 4 years ago for example and you now earn 300k. On the surface, it looks like progress abi? But when you realize that your 300k can only buy 3 bags of rice, you begin to wonder if taking these stupid risks will be better in the long run.

Migration by study isn't cheap unfortunately. It used to be for the rich and upper middle class then but now every dick and Harry is now studying. I'm active in a Nigerian church in Ontario and I have seen a lot. The other day in church someone came to me with accommodation problem, I initially thought he hasn't seen anyplace to rent since he is just 1 month in the country. Luckily there was this lady relocating to Alberta where she got a job and the room will soon become vacant. I Immediately referred him to her but he told me the problem is that he doesn't have money to rent not that he hasn't seen a place to rent. How can you not have money to rent in just 1 month of arrival, what were you thinking? I was so angry and I walked away.

Even in normal times, depending on working as a student to live wasn't ideal not to talk of now. So the idea that someone will plan based on student job is so ridiculous to me but then maybe "God dey"

Well, I don’t think anyone here deny the fact that Japa is for the poor, the average and the middle class. No wealthy Nigerian will wish to Japa under that ridiculous cold, loneliness, depression, fear of unknown and other things to earn $5k (if middle class) working in a decent place or to earn minimum wage (if average before they left) cleaning yansh or packing snow
There are 2 groups of anti japa people.

Group 1 are the genuine anti japa advocate. They have all it takes to migrate if they want to but they don't want cos they are not interested. They make their point but don't overflog the issue cos it doesn't concern them what others do. They have more important conversations to have than chasing what life people are living abroad. This group don't care whether people japa or not.

Group 2 are the fake anti japa advocates. They became anti japa cos they failed. Either they don't have what it takes to migrate or they were denied visas or they migrated but failed abroad. Cos of frustration and anger, they become anti japa advocate in other to try and feel good. It is this group that are noticing the japa noise because they care

It's obvious you are in Group 2. You keep creating useless threads about the same japa things you are against. Who does that? From creating thread on how a Macdonald worker is richer than Dangote to creating thread about grocery prices in America, for someone who claims to be anti japa, what is your interest?. If you are fixated on something you don't like or care about then there is a problem.
It's like claiming you don't like a babe but the babe's name is always in your mouth. You claim you can't date the babe cos she is not your type yet you are always ranting about the babe. My brother, you like the babe joor just that she no gree you.

My advice for you and others in your group in 2025 is to allow yourselves to heal. Failure is part of life and it is nothing to be ashamed of. It is likely everyone in this life will fail on something at some point in their life but how they move on is important. Focus on yourselves and let the people breathe. The last time I checked, children don't migrate, it is full fledged adults that migrate and they are not forced to japa. So if they pack snow and suffer, let them be, it doesn't affect your "wealth".
Abeg make una chill for 2025. Happy new year in advance to you all.

Before I moved to Canada, my friend told me the truth about life here, but I felt he was discouraging me or putting fear in me, just like you are now. However, now that I've landed and two years later, I'm quiet. What the man wrote above is the perfect truth that most people will hide from you, so accept it or reject it—just prepare yourself. Seeing is believing. No comment. Welcome to Canada grin
Abeg no vex what exactly is the perfect truth people are hiding? That the country is cold during the winter? Or you have to pay your bills? Things are expensive? The question is are they more expensive than Nigeria relative to income?

The problem here is unrealistic expectations as a result of the greedy nature of the average Nigerian. This is why many Nigerians believe that once they just land in another man's country, they will become millionaire. Anybody with sense knows that nothing is 100% guaranteed and should be able plan based on that when leaving their comfort zone. You don't need Anybody to tell you this basic life fact.
This is why I have always maintained that migration is not for everyone. You need to be sure of your short, medium and long-term goal then do a comprehensive research aligned with your personal situation to see if it makes sense based on your goals. If it does not then abort mission instead of wasting money migrating only to start complaining and making it look like someone deceived them into migrating.
I don't want this thread to be derailed with unnecessary argument, this thread is for people who have made the decision to migrate and need guidance on the process

Many people that came to Canada for greener pastures with kids, before you ask them why they came!they will tell you they came to Canada because of their children that is why they are here, forgetting that children born here or migrated to canada, will abandon ancestoral roots after staying in canada for years that's bad at the long run, some homes in nigerian villages are now empty because of migration .
However Canada is best for children especially Canadian new born children, the government looks after them and elderly, you'll pay your taxes to support this group of people which is not bad.
As for the live, there is no live in canada, you will only do shopping and work, and prices of groceries are very expensive because of gst and hst placed on them, your kids is the top priority before work.when you try to make end meet and pay bills, you will find out that, you have no live in canada, yeah live is that bad in canada!
As for the work: it will depend on the type of job you are looking for,and income, there are jobs in Canada and same time no job!
But with low wage income without two jobs or overtime, by the time you pay bills, car mortgage, car insurance and maintenance , home mortgage, or house rent, phone bill, electricity etc,you may not have much on savings.
Whether on high wage or low wage income or status!@ the end of the day,you are only a worker in canada no live..
With PR you can go back to school to upgrade your qualifications is cheap,it is an advantage! But this will add more stress to your live, seeking further education plus work, plus kids, you'll have no choice. Some PR holders are on low wages jobs some obtained masters and Bachelor's degree still went back to school for further studies they have no choice..
Canada weather is the toughest, car is not a luxury in canada, you'll need one for winter!if you can withstand canada winter, you'll be fine..
Temperature is -28°C upto 30° today in some province see my phone screenshot, weather is not smiling 😑 your fingers will feel the frost with or without gloves..
Time for all electric companies in canada to cash out, high bill on electric consumption on home heating.
Tighten your seat belt and enjoy the ride ..
Every thing you highlighted apart from the weather is far worse in Nigeria.
There are people in Nigeria who don't know where their ancestral home is. Go to Lagos and Abuja, you will see people who haven't been to their village or go to their village once in 10 years, so what's the big deal?

Which place is more expensive to live? A place where minimum wage on paper is 70k a month and bag of rice is 100k or place where minimum wage is $16 per hour and bag of rice is $80? A cleaner in Nigeria will work for a whole month yet his salary will not buy him a bag of rice while his counterpart in Canada only needs to work for 5 hrs to buy the same bag of rice. You and I know that most private school teachers don't earn up to 70k every month ooo.

Maybe you don't pay bills in Nigeria, you get things for free. You pay for light, yet you buy fuel for generator, solar panel, inverter etc just to have light. Buying recharge card for calls, is it not phone bill? Aren't you paying for the calls? Calculate how much you spend on recharge call monthly, that is your phone bill. I can go on and on. Tell me what service you get free in Nigeria while others in Canada pay for it. When I was in Nigeria, I pay for my estate security ooo, is that one not bill?

As for weather, winter is bad. However, it is 4 months not all year round. Besides, the same way you cope in extreme heat is the same way people cope with the cold. You have to do what is neccessary which is wearing thr right clothing's and having heaters on. At some point, winter wouldn't be a big deal anymore cos you would have adjusted to it

Look, there are legitimate and sound reasons why it may be a bad idea to migrate abroad for some people especially through study route but majority of people putting their mouth in this matter on this forum are just dishing out very unintelligent and dumb points that can't stand any logical test. If you want to convince people, then bring solid reasons not dumb reasons. This is why our effort to discourage stupid migration is failing cos people think we don't want them to come.

Imagine someone earning 500k per month in Lagos today, you are going to spend 1/5 of your monthly sweat on just 1 bag of rice.
This is why I ask, do you guys actually believe in what you write or just saying for saying sake?

This your post reminds me of this one you made a long time ago. Insurance is very important. I can understand why those in the developed world don't have much savings.
My brother, I don't joke with insurance oooo.

My first encounter with insurance that made me embrace the value happened in my first apartment I rented when I was new in canada.

When renting that apartment, the landlord advised we should get a tenant insurance. It wasn't compulsory but advised. I called some of our naija guys who have been in the country to know if I should get it, some didn't even know there was something like that, some said I shouldn't be wasting money on those nonsense, they have been living without it. However, when I checked the amount $24 a month, I felt since the cost isn't big, let me get it. So I started paying $24 per month for the tenant insurance.

Fast forward 11 months later, one morning around 4am, I heard someone knocking on our apartment door, I peeped through the door hole and saw a cop knocking grin. Haba! Cop knocking my door at 4am? Wetin I do? grin. I opened the door, the cop asked if our apartment is flooded, I said no. He said 2 apartments in the building is flooded during the midnight rain as a result of a partial roof collapse. Even though it affected only 2 apartments, the whole building has been declared unsafe and unfit for living and must be evacuated immediately. He said we should take our clothes and important items and leave the building.

He asked if we had where we can stay, I said no. He said we should call red cross and make arrangement on a temporary accommodation with them. Me, Red Cross? Na so we turn refugee? grin.

I had another option and that's to go to my brother's house who lives 8 minutes drive away but that would be inconveniencing to me and him cos it's my whole family and I hate inconveniencing people. But instead of Red Cross, I called him and he was okay about it.

So as we were moving out, I heard someone making a call and called tenant insurance. Immediately I heard that word, I remembered I was paying $24 every month on that. I Immediately looked for their number and called them. They made their verifications to confirm our claim and then checked us into one sweet hotel.

They paid for all our expenses in the hotel including food. In fact, because my children school from the hotel became far, they calculated the extra cost of taking them to school and paid me. We were in the hotel for one week but we were not enjoying it cos our food was limited to hotel food which is not interesting as naija people wey we be grin.
Someone suggested we tell them to get us Airbnb, we did and they put us in an Airbnb where we now had the opportunity to cook. We were in Airbnb for another 4 weeks before they told us to move back to our apartment as the building has been repaired.

So we spent a total of 5 weeks away from our apartment and we didn't spend 1 kobo of our own money and we didn't inconvenience anyone with our wahala.
Since then, I embraced insurance fully. I and my family are insured all round. I rather have insurance than having savings. Savings becomes useless when your problem is bigger than your savings grin

I live in Ontario and my siblings live in Manchester UK. She will be visiting all between Jan and March to return back March ending. All tickets booked.. We have all chosen this period due to less time at work.
I forgot to add, buy her travel insurance to cover her stay even if it is for one week.

Years ago, my healthy mother inlaw who came visiting had a health issue during her stay. One night around 1am she managed to call my wife, when we saw that unusual call, we rushed to her room only to find her collapsing. For the first time I called 911, they came under 4 minutes with their equipment, stabilized her and rushed her to emergency where she was diagnosed and treated. This all happened between 1am and 2am.She spent a week in hospital before she was discharged

The medical bill was more than $20k and insurance paid everything. That's how I would have coughed out more than $20k just like that.

Please don't forget insurance even if it is 1 day visit.

You guys are getting me really scared now..
Except you live in British Columbia that have a mild winter, it would have been better to let her come early spring to summer.

My own parents come every year but the come from May and go back by September. You need them to enjoy and get the best experience, winter period especially January and February is the worst month to do that.

It's not like anything will happen to her in winter after all there are mothers who are doing omugo for their children all year round in canada. Just that if it is about enjoying her stay to the fullest then it is a wrong time

Which auto insurance company do you use?
I’m getting 5,500-7000 annual quotes for a Ford fusion hybrid 2016. I am new in Canada but I had driving experience and no claim insurance certificate from the uk. Only one that is a bit reasonable which I am thinking of paying for in the next 48hrs is Aviva but without comprehensive or collusion included I will be paying 275/month.
Is there any company that takes into consideration previous driving experience from other countries?
I use TD for more than 7 years now. You can try them if you haven't already.

Insurance is priced based on 3 main factors. Location, type of car, profile of driver.

Same car, same driver profile but different location will give 2 different premiums. For example, 6 years ago, Brampton was known to be notoriously high in Insurance premiums. It cost twice as much to insure the same car in Brampton than Cambridge. I had a colleague then who was exploring the possibility of changing his address from Brampton to escape the high premiums. The reason was because of the shenanigans of Indians with Insurance fraud there. I don't know what their situation is now cos the insurance companies update their risk models yearly to match the latest crime and accident numbers.

Cars that are in the top 10 of most stolen cars cost more to insure. Cars with newer security features like blind spot detection, lane departure warnings and assist, anti collision assist etc are cheaper to insure.

Profile of the driver matters. Women get cheaper premiums than men. New drivers in canada get higher premiums. My premiums have been coming down yearly compared to the first year. In fact, what I pay now to insure 2 Cars is lower than what I was paying to insure 1 car when I came new. I don't think they factor your driving experience outside canada and US, I'm not sure.

Sometimes, what many Nigerians call saving money feels more like living in deprivation. They can't buy good clothes, go on holidays, or even enjoy decent food, often living in poor conditions. It makes me wonder if life is just about saving and living like a slave in bondage. I know many Nigerians with Canadian passports who have never even stepped out of Toronto, all in the name of saving.
I remember stopping by a store to buy meat, and my friend suggested that chicken is cheaper, so he switched from eating meat to pork or chicken. I just shook my head. If I can live well and eat well in Nigeria, what's the point of coming here and living like a cockroach just to save money?I visited a man once and noticed the living room light was off, and the children were using the TV's light as their source of illumination. When I asked why we were in darkness, he said they were practicing the culture of saving electricity. But inside, I thought, "This is practicing the culture of a poverty mindset. These are the same people who, back in Lagos, would drink beer and wine, but once they get to Canada, they can't even sit in a bar for a day to enjoy a drink. People are going to extremes all in the name of saving. It's so sad!
Wao, you remind me of my early years in canada. When we have team lunch, my colleagues will be talking about their holiday experiences in various parts of the world, I'll just be there looking like mumu wey no get hope grin . You will hear someone say something like " There is this stuff we enjoyed in Athens, you will hear someone echo, yes i did that when I was there 3 years ago, someone will say I was there last year and it was nice, another person will echo " I will be there next month I hope I enjoy it" I was the only one without much to share chai grin Before I moved to Canada, I had only traveled to one country in Europe but not even for holiday as it was for an official assignment sponsored by my company so it wasn't a holiday so there was nothing really significant to share from that trip

When school resume in September, my kids will come back from school sharing the adventures their fellow kids had in different countries cos they talk about it. You know children naa grin

The year we got our Canadian passports and I looked at taking my family to holiday in one country, when I saw the cost, I paused. I now started asking myself, why do you want to waste this amount of money, why not invest it, why not start another building project in Nigeria, is it worth it ? etc.
However, I overcame that mentality the second year and we traveled for holiday for the first time and since then I have made sure we go to one new country every year.

It is a mentality thing. An average Nigerian loves raw cash and properties. Looking at our account balance and seeing big money sleeping there gives us joy. We see money and properties as an end itself while oyibos see money as a means to an end, that is the difference.
All the Nigerians I know here in the middle class category own more than one house here. When the buy the first house, they push and push to buy the 2nd one then 3rd etc. They build 1 in Nigeria, then build another one etc. There is always a project at hand, every other thing is frivolity. This is who we are. However, the middle class oyibos I know don't have more than one house, they are less interested in acquire acquire and acquire, they are more interested in enjoying their life. That is why they don't have $1 in their account but they travel round the world.

Maybe my mentality changed cos I have properties but then for most Nigerians there is no limit to acquiring properties. The only people who enjoy life as Nigerians are the rich ones, those one wey their money looooooooong grin but middle class like us, no way, enjoyment looks like a waste grin
