Giving a forensic report of the incident, base on the picture, Fashola was already held in the hold up not knowing to the army officer who saw a free road rather than joining the queue. Apparently Fash was hinted of a strange movement on the dedicated lane and he ordered the convoyed to a halt, have it in mind, there are always press crew amongst the convoy who actually rose to the occation to give us the picture. |

The minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, has announced the indefinite suspension of four courses in the institution: Medicine, Veterinary medicine, Engineering and Agriculture, due to their non-accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The minister said that before the establishment of the capital intensive programmes, many factors would have been considered, notably physical structures, learning resources and staff. He further disclosed that ‘consultations with the relevant professional bodies, like Council for the Regulation of Engineering In Nigeria (COREN), Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, and the Vetinary Medical Council of Nigeria were not done which had caused untold hardship to students as they had to read the courses with no graduation date in sight. She said: “Iit is on record that the university continued offering these programmes against the NUC’s directive on their closure in view of their denied accreditation status which has also led to the non-granting of admissions into the programmes.” The minister, who stressed that the federal government would not hesitate to use the big stick against the management and leadership of the institution, said due process must be followed, which had already started following the white paper submitted by the committee for proper action. She directed that, henceforth, all new admissions into the programme be suspended while JAMB and NUC ‘should work out modalities for redistributing the students already admitted into the four programmes to other universities where these programmes have full accreditation’ or to absorbe them into related programmes which have been accredited. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/04/medicine-3-other-courses-suspended-in.html |
Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, has been upgraded to a degree awarding institution. This followed an approval given to the institution by the National Universities Commission on Tuesday. Although the institution is meant to serve as a training ground for police cadets, its degree awarding status brings the total number of Nigerian universities to 124. Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who conveyed NUC’s approval to the institution, urged the police authorities to ensure that standards were maintained. He stressed the need for adequate courses to be run due to its specialised capacity. Okojie said courses offered by the institution must be for capacity building. He said for maximum standard to be maintained, policemen seeking admission to the academy should be made to sit for UTME examinations since the academy is now a degree awarding institution. He said, “This will ensure that proficiency is nurtured to help management structure.” Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade (retd.), said, “The police force now requires an institution that is service oriented especially now that our state of insecurity calls for dedicated training and capacity building.” Also speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of Tertiary Trust Fund, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said so much was expected from the academy, especially as it would be following in the footsteps of Nigeria Defence Academy. He said, “Training in the academy is not only for officers who have since passed degree level but for up coming officers who need to grow to degree level.” Yakubu said the police must ensured that the training of their officers in the institution would be different from that of other institutions. http://www.punchng.com/news/police-get-own-varsity/ |
n undergraduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Mr Olasaidi Dare, got sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Federal High Court, yesterday after he was found guilty of attempting to obtain money under false pretence via the Internet. Dare was apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which traced him to a Cyber Cafe belonging to a former member of the National Assembly, Senator Olabode Ola, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. According to the anti-graft agency, the convicted undergraduate, who was said to belong to a 419-syndicate, was arrested on March 31, 2008, at the said Cyber Cafe which is located inside a hotel, after he attempted to dupe an operative who posed as a wealthy foreigner. He was arrested alongside the manager of the hotel who was said to have been convicted by the same court ab-initio. Handing the 5-years jail term to Dare yesterday, trial Justice Lawal Shuaibu said his imprisonment should take effect from the date he was arrested. Meanwhile, the erstwhile lawmaker, Senator Ola, is also standing trial before an Ekiti High Court over alleged illegal use of his premises for internet scam, otherwise known as “yahoo-yahoo”, as well as his failure to register his Cyber Cafe with all the regulatory agencies, including the EFCC. The agency told the trial court that it had in an operation code-named “Cyberstorm-1”, raided illegal cyber cafes across the nation, which were believed to have accorded safe haven to internet fraudsters. It said the operation which took place in March 2008, culminated in several arrests, saying most of the syndicates were caught in shoddy cyber cafes where they operated. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/04/court-jails-oou-undergraduate-for-five.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Nigerianeye+%28NigerianEye%29 |
One of the cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against renowned Nigerian rogue banker, Erastus Akingbola, was quashed by a judge of the Federal High Court in Lagos today for lack of diligent prosecution. Mr. Akingbola and his associate Bayo Dada were standing trial on a 22-count charge bordering on stealing of N42.4 billion from the Intercontinental Bank Plc where he was managing director. Saharareporters sources said the judge of Federal High Court in Lagos Justice Charles Archibong acted strangely when he abruptly dismissed the corruption charges Mr. Akingbola for lack of diligent prosecution. The judge had earlier granted the EFCC legal team leave to amend the charges against the rogue banker. Legal sources stated that the judge also overreached when he directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, to dissolve the prosecuting team of the EFCC handling the case. The case of the rogue banker is the eight case quashed in course of well-packaged deals with corrupt persons spearheaded by President Goodluck Jonathan and his Attorney General of the Federation, Bello Adoke. Last week Saharareporters did an expose on the deal which is aimed at raising funds for Mr. Jonathan's plan to run for office in 2015. Our sources said the case of Francis Atuche, the former managing Director of Bank PHB is next in line to be tossed in a similar deal spearheaded by the Chief Judge of the Federal High court of Nigeria, Ibrahim Auta. Last week an Abuja high court using a similar language tossed the case against Ndudi Elumelu following a letter he wrote to President Jonathan asking for his intervention. Pakistan jails bin Laden's family By Agency Reporter 4 hours 10 minutes ago Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font bin Laden bin Laden A Pakistani court charged late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's three widows and two daughters with illegally stay in the country and sentenced them to 45 days in jail, their lawyers told Reuters on Monday. In practice, that means 14 days in prison because they have been in detention since March 3. Bin Laden's family members will eventually be deported to their home countries, the lawyers said. ``They were sentenced to 45 days imprisonment and fined 110 dollars each. The money was paid on the spot,’’ Aamir Khalil, one of the lawyers, said. ``The Secretary of the Interior has been instructed to make arrangements for their deportation after that.’’ Analysts had said that Pakistan may have wanted a lengthy prison sentence for the family to prevent them from discussing details of their time in the country. Once outside Pakistan, bin Laden's relatives could reveal details about how the world's most wanted man was able to hide in United States ally Pakistan for years, possibly assisted by elements of the country's powerful military and spy agency. Pakistan's government and military have said they had no links to bin Laden. http://nigeriamasterweb.com/paperfrmes.html |

The Real Madrid ace joined world No2 Rafael Nadal to play a unique tennis match for Nike's latest advert. But while Nadal used his usual racket, Ronaldo donned his new boots to show off his silky footwork to take on the Spaniard. The shocking pink Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII — built for their explosive speed — proved a smash hit for the former Manchester United star. Ronaldo said: "Filming with Rafa is something different — me with football, him with tennis. It was a pleasure. I really enjoyed it." The goal machine admits he is a big tennis fan and Real supporter Nadal is his favourite player. He added: "I love tennis. Not just me but some of my family, like my brother who often travels with me. "It's a sport I really like aside from football. Ibori’s Guilty Plea: Castigation Of Nigeria’s Judicial System-CPC Posted: March 1, 2012 - 13:32 The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, has noted with keen interest the on- going trial of Chief James Ibori at London’s South-walk Crown Court in which the former PDP Governor of Delta State pleaded guilty to the allegation of stealing $250million (about N38.75Billion) from the state and laundering same through off-shore Companies. The prosecuting counsel, Sasha Wass, QC, had said inter-alia that: “Ibori had ‘tricked’ his way into becoming a governor between 1999 and 2007, by giving a false date of birth and claiming he had no criminal record. He was never the legitimate governor and there was effectively a thief in government house. As the pretender of that public office, he was able to plunder Delta State's wealth and hand out patronage.” The latest twist and turn in this case, we view as huge indictment of the Nation’s judicial system. It would be recalled that in 2009, Justice Marcel Awokulehin of the Federal High Court, Asaba absolved James Ibori of all the 170- count charge of corruption and money laundering brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Earlier in 2004, Justice Hussein Mukhtar had dismissed a charge brought by two PDP members that Ibori had once been convicted by an Abuja upper area court. In a related matter, we are miffed by the subsisting perpetual injunction by the former PDP Rivers state governor, Dr Peter Odili, restraining the EFCC from prosecuting him. This bizarre order, with no judicial precedent or any supportable Nigerian law, was issued by Justice Ibrahim Nyaure Buba of the Federal High Court. A formal petition sent to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi on 20th November, 2009 by a UK-based Nigerian Lawyer, was dismissed as ‘unmeritorious’. The pertinent question is: should we wait until the Nation is thoroughly embarrassed again (from outside its shores) before vacating this egregiously lawless order? As a Party, we conclude by reminding the Judicial Powers in the Land of the admonition of Justice Frankfurter of the United States’ Supreme Court: “All power is of an encroaching nature. Judicial Power is not immune to this human weakness. It must also be on guard against encroaching beyond its bounds and not the less so since the only restraint upon itself is self restraint.” God bless Nigeria. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/ibori%E2%80%99s-guilty-plea-castigation-nigeria%E2%80%99s-judicial-system-cpc |
A 33-year-old man, Opeyemi Ayomide, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria and later charged before the Ojokoro Magistrate’s Court with stealing onion worth N20. Ayomide was alleged to have gone inside Oke-Odo market near Iyana Ipaja, Lagos on 14 January this year during the fuel subsidy strike and stole the onion, eggs and a tuber of yam. When the trader selling the onion, Bala Adamu, accosted him, he was still holding a knife and he forcefully took the onion from Adamu’s table. The trader raised an alarm and his colleagues apprehended opeyemi who claimed he needed the onion to fry his eggs to eat yam. But during police investigation, it was discovered that Opeyemi had stolen the yam tuber and egg in the same market in like manner that he had stolen the onion. P.M. NEWS gathered that Opeyemi gave the same explanation to the police that he did not steal the egg, yam and onion but he was hungry and need to eat. Police ignored his explanation and charged him to court. According to the police prosecutor, the offence Opeyemi committed is contrary to sections 285 and 238 of the criminal code laws of Lagos State of Nigeria. When the charge was read to him, Opeyemi told the court that he did not see himself as a thief. He said he took the items because he was hungry and he pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mrs A.F. Adeeyo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum. The matter was adjourned till 10 February, 2012 for mention. Opeyemi was remanded in prison custody as no one came to stand surety for him. —Cyriacus Izuekwe http://talkofnaija.com/News/newsdetailsone.aspx?NewsId=9F328E85-6661-459F-82A6-E0911D4A8451 |
This trend is still very disturbing, where are we going in this country of ours. God help us. |
I was opportune to talk to one of the commanders just about 20min ago about the deployment of soldiers to the street of Lagos and vehemently denied the allegation that Lagos state govt requested for soldiers. He took his time to explain the rationale behind it that the deployment was actually done to forestall sanity because the BH boys could seize the opportunity of killing more people because of the topographical nature of Lagos state alas the crowd |
