E.g a murderer is always a murder, but one can be a former thief, a former rebel. To call a man a thief when he has stopped stealing is inaccurate. Now, what can you tell me is the consistent factor in the definitions? I know you won't know, so let me help you: the usage of present continuous tense (steals instead of has stolen). That is, a thief is one who is, in the current period of time, engaged in stealing. A person may have been a thief but that does not make him one forever, especially if the law as run its course. Similarly, a lesbian may not always remain a lesbian.
