Science/TechnologyBrutal Medical Diagrams Reveal Horrors Of 19th-century Surgery by khalhokage(op): 4:05pm On Jan 26, 2016

For much of the 19th century, surgery was carried out without anaesthetic.

The next time you find yourself squirming at the thought of going to the dentist or having an injection, just remember how lucky you are to live in an age of anaesthetics, decent sanitation, and all-round high levels of medical expertise. This certainly has not always been the case – a fact revealed in all its gruesome glory by these gut-wrenching images of 19th-century medical procedures.

Obtained from the archives of the Wellcome Trust and assembled in a new book entitled "Crucial Interventions," the horrific diagrams show how doctors used to cut tumors out of patients’ tongues and breasts, amputate fingers and perform eye surgery, all without anaesthetics. One can only imagine the amount of pain that these patients must have been in, and those who didn’t die on the operating table later ran a high risk of infection after being sewn back up, with the first antibiotic not being discovered until the 1900s.

Who needs fingers anyway?

Among the operations depicted is a horrendous jaw reconstruction, which appeared in a medical-surgical textbook in the 1840s and shows an unfortunate patient having his face dismantled. Another depicts an arm amputation that looks more like a street stabbing.

Jaw reconstruction surgery in the 19th century was not fun.

Advances in the field of anaesthetics were made over the course of the 1800s, with nitrous oxide gas first being used to put a patient to sleep during a medical procedure in 1846.

The first stages of an arm amputation.

While medicine may still be far from perfect, at least we can all rest easy in the knowledge that we’ll never be subjected to any of the grisly operations that were commonplace in centuries gone by.

Science/TechnologyThis Dark Truth About Penguins Was Kept Secret For More Than 100 Years by khalhokage(op): 4:24pm On Jan 21, 2016
https://www.iflscience.com/sites/www.iflscience.com/files/styles/ifls_large/public/blog/%5Bnid%5D/pingu_0.jpg

Aww. Aren’t penguins the cutest? With all their waddling and flappy little arms. Adélie penguins look particularly adorable, standing at just 70 centimeters (27.5 inches) with beady little eyes.

But don't be fooled by their charming appearance. When Dr George Murray Levick made his observations on their sexual behavior in 1911 and 1912, it was deemed too inappropriate to ever be published. You might consider that standard in prudish Edwardian England, but even by today’s standard, some of it is pretty extreme.

Far before the sexual liberation of the 1960s, penguins were ahead of the curve by engaging in promiscuous sex between unpaired male and female penguins. There were also records of homosexual sex between male penguins.

So far, no problems by modern standards. But wait. On his Antarctic Expedition, Levick also observed instances of Adélie penguins engaging in rape, gang rape, sexual and physical abuse of chicks, as well as necrophilia with penguins, some of which had died the previous year.

Levick blamed this "astonishing depravity" on "hooligan males." So shocked, he wrote down his observations in Greek so only educated gentlemen could understand. His code seemed to work, and his work wasn't published until 2012.

In 1998 more penguin depravity came to light, when people observed ad é lie penguins using stones to love-vendor out females for prostitution. They also reported that some of the prostitute penguins tricked the males into thinking they would have sex by performing an elaborate courtship ritual, then run away with their stones.

Pingu will never be the same.

Seun:
Yes. The difference is that venomous snakes can kill people. If a venomous snake bites you in Nigeria, you are dead. So we don't joke with snakes. If I captured a non-venomous snake (or a wild cat), I would try to keep it in the cage as a pet instead of killing it. My ideal cat would look just like the cat in this picture. Smooth black fur with golden eyes, just like cats in the movies. I'm not afraid of black cats. I like them.
I've never agreed on a lot of your policies on Nairaland but I like you for one reason, you're an animal lover.

HealthHow To Rescue Victims Of Cardiac Arrest by khalhokage(op): 12:08pm On Jan 13, 2016
I have put this piece up as a continuation of my last article entitled ‘Sudden death syndrome is not so sudden’. I mentioned in that piece that cases of SDS from cardiac arrest are on the increase in the country, thereby creating worries and anxieties.

As a reminder, a cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. A person who has a cardiac arrest would have slumped and become unresponsive to touch. The person will most likely die if he or she does not receive immediate treatment.

It is often caused by a heart attack from complicated medical conditions like hypertension; but other things, such as drowning and electric shock, can also cause it.

Many things such as drowning, choking, sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, infections or congenital abnormalities, can cause cardiac arrest in children.

Interventions
When a person slumps, whether or not the victim survives depends largely upon the immediate intervention of bystanders. There is a brief time frame for saving the victim’s life.

The victims can survive if they receive immediate assistance from those around .To be effective, this treatment must be delivered quickly — ideally, within five minutes after collapsing.

Even the best emergency medical services may not be able to reach a victim within five minutes. This is why a prompt action by bystanders is so critical and why it is so important for all to have training in what we called Basic Life Support.

Basic life support
The BLS is the level of medical care, which is used for victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital.

Medical personnel, including paramedics and laypersons, who have received BLS training, can provide this service.

While the victim needs to be laid down on a flat surface probably on the floor, lying on the back, the rescuer should not attempt to sit the victim down as no active resuscitation is done that way.

The usual practice of pouring water on the head or body of a victim should be discouraged. This may cause hypothermia (low temperature) which is not good for survival.

It is not time to start forcing milk or malt drink in the person’s mouth; this is dangerous as it may block the airway. When the victims get to the hospital, it is always challenging trying to clear the airway of the particles in the mouth.
BLS is generally used in the pre-hospital setting, at home and can be provided without medical equipment.

The BLS procedure is explained below with an acronym: DRS ABCD
D: Check for danger signs. In cases of electrocution, rescuers should avoid moving too close to ensure their own safety (safety first).

R: Check for response by calling the person and shaking the shoulders.
S: If there is no response, shout for help. Get a second person to call the emergency numbers or the hospitals.

A: Check that the airway is open and clear any secretions from mouth and nostrils.

B: Check for any signs of breathing.

C: Start cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Give 30 chest compressions: Two breaths called ‘Kiss of life’. Continue CPR until responsiveness or normal breathing returns.

Do not stop to check the victim or discontinue CPR unless the victim starts to show signs of regaining consciousness, such as coughing, opening of the eyes, speaking or breathing.

Once the medical personnel or ambulance arrives, the rescuer may assist in moving the victim to the ambulance for onward transport to hospital.
Defibrillator: A defibrillator is a machine that gives the person’s heart a controlled electric shock that may make it to start beating again.

The steps listed above are guides and not training. It is mandatory for persons interested in doing CPR to attend the BLS training or have one done.

Conclusion
Regular medical check-up is key to preventing a cardiac arrest and should be promoted. Those who are over 40 years are advised to do a six-monthly or yearly comprehensive medical screening under the supervision of their physicians.

Those with unexplained or persistent symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, headache, body pain, and tiredness will also need guided medical checks.

In conjunction with the management of the Life Scan and Wellness health care, Lagos, there will be an enlightenment and health education session on Saturday January 16 from 8am.

Also, medical checks and necessary blood tests will be conducted throughout this January.

Participants are to indicate their interest by calling or sending text messages to 08023044890 or 08186549147.

Dietary guides will be available for diabetics and hypertensives.

I learnt he even asked him to marry another wife because he argued that am a bad wife. Right now my husband doesnt live with me and doesnt pick my calls. This is all because of a fake prophet. Anyways MY GOD is BIGGER

A Nigerian, Chukwuka Ekeledo, is petitioning the NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission) against Smile Communications Nigeria’s extreme throttling of their Unlimited data promo. Here is an excerpt from the petition:

In December 2015, they rolled out their Unlimited plan at the ridiculous price of N19,800($73) for 30 days. A large majority of its users jumped on this plan because it made the most sense but to the shocking disbelief and downright frustration of its users, within days of activation an ISP that recorded a whooping speed of 21 Megabytes per second was reduced to 4.732 kilobytes per second.
You will remember that our findings here is that Smile throttles the said Unlimited plan. While throttling is a legitimate practice among ISPs the world over, the kind of throttling being experienced by subscribers to Smile’s Unlimited plan is very extreme. Throttling of the service down to 3G speeds would have been a fairer approach, but with subscribers experiencing far less than 3G speeds on a 4G plan, a reaction of this sort is not surprising.

What do you think of this situation? If interested in the matter, the petition is available on Change.org and can be found HERE.
