Science/TechnologyMassive New Study Suggests The Pill Has Prevented 200,000 Cases Of Womb Cancer by khalhokage(op): 9:13am On Aug 08, 2015

The contraceptive pill is arguably one of the biggest advancements in women's health of the 20th century. A recent study suggests that the birth control pill not only gave women the opportunity to use their reproductive rights, but has also prevented hundreds of thousands of cases of womb cancer.

According to new research, published in the journal The Lancet Oncology, the pill reduces the incidence of womb cancer, which is also known as uterine or endometrial cancer. This form of cancer affects the female reproductive system and usually occurs after menopause. Womb cancer often begins in the inner lining of the womb, which is called the endometrium. The most common symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding.

To investigate the link between the pill and the subsequent risk of womb cancer, researchers analyzed data from 36 studies that included 27,276 women with womb cancer and 115,743 women without it. Researchers note in the study that this is almost all available data on the effect of the pill on endometrial cancer.

They found that the pill had prevented an estimated 400,000 womb cancer cases in the past 50 years, including 200,000 in the last decade. The pill reduced the risk of womb cancer by around a quarter for every five years on the pill and those who took birth control pills for 10 years also cut the risk of ovarian cancer in half.

Researchers are unsure of the exact mechanisms of how protection against womb cancer could be conferred, but speculate it plays a role in reducing exposure to unopposed oestrogen during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, which could prevent rapid oestrogen-induced cell growth.

“The strong protective effect of oral contraceptives against endometrial cancer – which persists for decades after stopping the pill – means that women who use it when they are in their 20s or even younger continue to benefit into their 50s and older, when cancer becomes more common,” co-author Valerie Beral, from the
University of Oxford, said in a statement to the press.

The American Cancer Society estimates there are about 54,870 new cases of womb cancer and around 10,170 deaths in the U.S. each year. According to Cancer Research UK , womb cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Europe for females, and the tenth most common cancer overall.

Researchers note that although estrogen levels in birth control pills have decreased, with pills in the 1960s containing more than double the level of estrogen than pills in the 1980s, the level of protection stayed the same even in lower doses.

Different doses and versions of the pill still come with some risks, such as blood clots, strokes and heart attacks, researchers warn. Beral told The Guardian that even though the evidence for the pill’s protection falls short of it being prescribed to prevent cancer, studies like this are important as “women need to be more aware of the unintended benefits and the risks of oral contraceptives, so that they can make informed decisions.”

Television serial killer Dexter may be more of a psychopath than a sociopath due to his methodically delivered kills.

Psychopath and sociopath are popular psychology terms to describe violent monsters born of our worst nightmares. Think Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs (1991) , Norman Bates in Psycho (1960) and Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990) . In making these characters famous, popular culture has also burned the words used to describe them into our collective consciousness.
Most of us, fortunately, will never meet a Hannibal Lecter, but psychopaths and sociopaths certainly do exist. And they hide among us. Sometimes as the most successful people in society because they’re often ruthless, callous and superficially charming, while having little or no regard for the feelings or needs of others.

These are known as “successful” psychopaths, as they have a tendency to perform premeditated crimes with calculated risk. Or they may manipulate someone else into breaking the law, while keeping themselves safely at a distance. They’re master manipulators of other peoples’ feelings, but are unable to experience emotions themselves.

Sound like someone you know? Well, heads up. You do know one; at least one. Prevalence rates come in somewhere between 0.2% and 3.3% of the population.

If you’re worried about yourself, you can take a quiz to find out, but before you click on that link let me save you some time: you’re not a psychopath or sociopath. If you were, you probably wouldn’t be interested in taking that personality test.

You just wouldn’t be that self-aware or concerned about your character flaws. That’s why both psychopathy and sociopathy are known as anti-social personality disorders, which are long-term mental health conditions.

What’s The Difference?

Psychopaths and sociopaths share a number of characteristics, including a lack of remorse or empathy for others, a lack of guilt or ability to take responsibility for their actions, a disregard for laws or social conventions, and an inclination to violence. A core feature of both is a deceitful and manipulative nature. But how can we tell them apart?

Sociopaths are normally less emotionally stable and highly impulsive – their behaviour tends to be more erratic than psychopaths. When committing crimes – either violent or non-violent – sociopaths will act more on compulsion. And they will lack patience, giving in much more easily to impulsiveness and lacking detailed planning.

Psychopaths, on the other hand, will plan their crimes down to the smallest detail, taking calculated risks to avoid detection. The smart ones will leave few clues that may lead to being caught. Psychopaths don’t get carried away in the moment and make fewer mistakes as a result.

Both act on a continuum of behaviours, and many psychologists still debate whether the two should be differentiated at all. But for those who do differentiate between the two, one thing is largely agreed upon: psychiatrists use the term psychopathy to illustrate that the cause of the anti-social personality disorder is hereditary. Sociopathy describes behaviours that are the result of a brain injury, or abuse and/or neglect in childhood.

Psychopaths are born and sociopaths are made. In essence, their difference reflects the nature versus nurture debate.

There’s a particularly interesting link between serial killers and psychopaths or sociopaths – although, of course, not all psychopaths and sociopaths become serial killers. And not all serial killers are psychopaths or sociopaths.

Thomas Hemming murdered two people in 2014 just to know what it felt like to kill. Tracey Nearmy/AAP Image

But America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has noted certain traits shared between known serial killers and these anti-social personality disorders. These include predatory behaviour (for instance, Ivan Milat, who hunted and murdered his seven victims); sensation-seeking (think hedonistic killers who murder for excitement or arousal, such as 21-year-old Thomas Hemming who, in 2014, murdered two people just to know what it felt like to kill); lack of remorse; impulsivity; and the need for control or power over others (such as Dennis Rader , an American serial killer who murdered ten people between 1974 and 1991, and became known as the “BTK (bind, torture, kill) killer”).

A Case Study

The Sydney murder of Morgan Huxley by 22-year-old Jack Kelsall, who arguably shows all the hallmarks of a psychopath, highlights the differences between psychopaths and sociopaths.

In 2013, Kelsall followed Huxley home where he indecently assaulted the 31-year-old before stabbing him 28 times. Kelsall showed no remorse for his crime, which was extremely violent and pre-meditated.

There’s no doubt in my mind he’s psychopathic rather than sociopathic because although the murder was frenzied, Kelsall showed patience and planning. He had followed potential victims before and had shared fantasies he had about murdering a stranger with a knife with his psychiatrist a year before he killed Huxley, allegedly for “ the thrill of it ”.

Whatever Kelsall’s motive, regardless of whether his dysfunction was born or made, the case stands as an example of the worst possible outcome of an anti-social personality disorder: senseless violence perpetrated against a random victim for self-gratification. Throughout his trial and sentencing, Kelsall showed no sign of remorse, no guilt, and gave no apology.

A textbook psychopath, he would, I believe, have gone on to kill again. In my opinion – and that of the police who arrested him – Kelsall was a serial killer in the making.

In the end, does the distinction between a psychopath and sociopath matter? They can both be dangerous and even deadly, the worst wreaking havoc with people’s lives. Or they can spend their life among people who are none the wiser for it.

Science/TechnologyArcheologists Unearth The Gate Of An Ancient Biblical City by khalhokage(op): 11:47pm On Aug 05, 2015

The story is known to many: the smaller, weaker David stands up to the giant warrior Goliath, and eventually kills him with his slingshot. Now archeologists think that they’ve just unearthed the massive foundations to the entrance of the biblical city of Gath, Goliath's hometown and, during its heyday, the largest city in the region.

The city was once one of five Philistine city-states – the others being Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashod, and Ekron – that existed in the same region as the modern day Gaza Strip. “We knew that Philistine Gath in the 10th to ninth century [BCE] was a large city, perhaps the largest in the land at that time,” Professor Aren Maeir, of Bar-Ilan University in Israel, who leads the excavations of the city, told Live Science. “These monumental fortifications stress how large and mighty this city was.”

https://i.imgur.com/uHxrpNd.jpg
View of the Iron Age fortifications of the lower city of Philistine Gath. Credit: Prof. Aren Maeir/Ackerman Family Bar-Ilan University Expedition.

The university has been excavating the city for decades, with this year marking the 20 expedition to Gath. The site is one of the largest ancient ruin mounds, or “tells,” in the whole of Israel, and has been occupied almost continuously from around 5,000 BCE to the modern day. The last inhabitants of the site were a small Arab village that upped and left in around 1948. This means that the area is completely undeveloped and open to excavation.
With the incredible size of the city and the references in the bible – notably when David fled from King Saul to the city – it’s generally accepted that this must be the ancient site of Gath. Ruled by the Philistines, they were in conflict with the neighboring Jewish kingdoms of Judah and Israel. This could explain why the city had such an impressive gate and monumental fortifications, though even this wasn’t enough to protect the city when it was finally put under siege and laid to waste in 830 BCE.

But the discoveries didn’t stop at the massive gate. The team has also uncovered a temple, evidence of iron smelting, and remains relating to potentially the earliest siege system in the world. Consisting of a 2.5-kilometer-long , 8-meter-wide trench and towers, apparently even this couldn’t halt the city's eventual destruction. More interesting, perhaps, is the pottery that they found at the site, as it seems to have been influenced by their supposed enemies, showing elements of Israelite techniques.

As is often the case, the relationship between the apparently warring groups of people was far more complex and multifaceted than both sides simply viewing each other as enemies. Maeir suspects that the excavation of the gates will keep them plenty busy for at least another few seasons in the field.

Well...it probably won't stand toe to toe with MCU. Fox have redeemed themselves with the new X-Men franchise and the last Wolverine after the nonsense that was X3. But, their momentum has faltered with this. The actors did give a good performance, though.

This was a typical origin story - so slow with the action, plenty with the exposition. The trailers led me to believe it would be action packed, but it was mostly in the third act. I had a few chuckles, but unlike MCU's latest offering, Ant-Man, which is also slow, A-M has buckets of charm & Micheal Peña, F4 doesn't have either. F4 has the government doing one of the two things they always do, when they encounter super-powered humans - they weaponise them. There were certainly scenes that ended up in the cutting room floor - scenes that appeared in the trailers, but not in the film. It's an okay popcorn, just don't think too much. So far though, the reviews have not been good.

Sidebar: Although, I kept wondering what the heck was going on with Sue's hair after the timeframe changed (1 year later). At times it looked like a bad blonde wig.
That's good I guess, I like them slow and don't hate on X3 I enjoyed it... a lot.

Just came back from Fantastic 4, it was alright definitely slower and a bit more dramatic. There are no after credit scenes*, I guessed they wouldn't be any since it's not in the MCU.
*unless you enjoy the "over 15000 jobs created during this...yada yada" placard, then you're golden.
So how was it exactly? I know it'll be better than the previous movies for sure, but how does it stack up to the MCU,Sony and Fox marvel movies?
Science/TechnologyRe: Nine Surprising Facts About Breasts You Probably Didn’t Know by khalhokage(op): 8:15pm On Aug 04, 2015

Science/TechnologyNine Surprising Facts About Breasts You Probably Didn’t Know by khalhokage(op):
Bazongas. Boobies. The girls. Whatever you call them, breasts are surprising for those that have them and those that don’t. Turning up around puberty for women, estrogen and growth hormone cause the development of breasts, which are made up of glandular and fatty tissue.
Here are nine more things you may not have known about the mammaries. After all, they are our breast friends.

1. Some women can orgasm via breast stimulation

Two high-profile sex educators conducted an in-depth study to bolster claims that women could reach orgasm through breast stimulation alone. Dorian Solot and Marshall Miller, authors of I Love Female Orgasm: An Extraordinary Orgasm Guide, reported that 1% of women in their research told of their ability to orgasm through playing with their pair.

2. Boobs are more fraternal twins than identical

Everyone has asymmetrical features: an arm longer the other, a foot larger than the other, even a breast larger than the other. In a study published in the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology, the right breast was found to be on average larger than the left.

3. Breasts can weigh about as much as three bricks

Imagine carrying three bricks around all day every day and then sleeping with them on your chest. The average bra can support breasts that weigh between 0.23 kilograms (half a pound) and 9 kilograms (20 pounds), about the weight of three bricks. That’s heavy stuff.

4. And if you like ‘em large, you’re probably not rolling in dollar

A 2013 study found that men who "lacked material goods," or who were from a lower socioeconomic background, preferred women with larger bosoms, as this higher fat content may indicate the women have access to better resources.
In fact, these researchers found that those from a low socioeconomic background desired a woman with bigger boobs more than men from a medium socioeconomic background. And, in turn, men from a medium socioeconomic background fancied a larger pair than men from a high socioeconomic background.
Essentially, the poorer the man, the larger the handful preferred.

5. Everyone stares at your breasts. EVERY. ONE.

According to a study where women and men were fitted with an eye-tracking device, both were found to look at a woman’s boobs instead of her face but men do it for longer. So women do boob-watch too but they’re just quicker about it.

6. What does your nipplē type say about you?

There are different types of nipplēs , clinically classed as ‘normal,’ ‘flat,’ ‘puffy,’ ‘inverted’ with three grades of inversion, and ‘unilateral.’ And just like the asymmetry of boobs, your nipples may not be a matching pair.

7. …or even a matching triplet

Another udder. A triple nipple. Having a third nipplē somewhere on the body is called polythelia. Around three percent of people have an extra nipplē, according to Pathology Outline, although estimates varying greatly by location. The National Institute of Health’s Office of Rare Diseases estimates that fewer than 200,000 people in the United States have an extra teat. It’s often mistaken for a mole and can appear anywhere on the body, so grab a mirror and have a good check.

8. Smoking and pregnancy can cause sweater puppies to sag

There is a vital protein in the skin called elastin, which gives skin elasticity and stretch without tearing. Continual smoking can actually break down this protein , causing slack bosoms. Additional pregnancies can also cause breasts to travel south, as a study presented at the 2007 conference for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found.

9. You can get your hands on all the bras – for science!

In fact, there is an entire department for this at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University . Created by the bra manufacturer Top Form, the lab is purely dedicated to the research and development of bras, glorious bras!

An ancient nuclear reactor that was churning away 2 billion years ago sounds like a fabricated myth. Maybe it's because the term reactor implies a manmade structure. Instead, the reactor is a region of natural uranium within the Earth's crust, found in Okla, Gabon. Uranium is naturally radioactive, and the conditions in this rocky area happened to be just right to cook up some nuclear reactions.

The natural reactor must have annoyed nuclear scientists: The first nuclear reactor to produce electricity started up in 1951, and this only produced a trivial amount of energy. The pile of rock in the ground in Okla, on the other hand, had created nuclear power around 2 billion years ago!

It was discovered in 1972, when some French scientists took uranium ore from the mine in Gabon to test its uranium content. Now, typically, uranium ore is made up of three types (isotopes) of uranium, each one with a different number of neutrons: Uranium 238, which is the most abundant, uranium 234, which is the rarest, and uranium 235, which nuclear scientists are most interested in because it can sustain nuclear chain reactions.

One would expect to find that the uranium ore is composed of 0.720% uranium 235 since that is the percentage found in other rock samples from the Earth's crust, the Moon and even meteorites. However, these French scientists found something fishy: The uranium sample only contained 0.717% of uranium 235. What might seem to be a minor discrepancy of 0.003% is very significant with regards to uranium.

That meant that, back at the mine, around 200 kilograms (around 440 pounds) of uranium 235 appeared to be missing. It hadn't been lost or stolen. Instead, this missing 0.003% had undergone nuclear fission and split into other atoms. This conclusion may very well have furrowed some brows since there are three very specific conditions that a reactor needs to churn out energy continuously. And as even scientists had struggled to create a nuclear reactor, it seemed unlikely that nature just happened to create one purely by accident.

Unlikely, but not impossible, because that is exactly what happened.
The conditions that the natural reactor happened to fulfill are as follows.
The first was owning a good percentage of Uranium 235 to fuel the reaction. While 0.720% might seem small, it's perfect for nuclear fission, and when the ore samples from Okla are compared to other samples from all over the world, it is likely that this was the percentage over 2 billion years ago when the reactor started.

The second condition is a source of neutrons. Uranium 235 decays naturally into thorium and releases a neutron in the process. This neutron can then whoosh towards another Uranium 235 atom and start the fission process. Nuclear fission is when an atom breaks apart into smaller atoms, usually releasing energy in the process. This neutron fuses with a Uranium 235, and together they combine to form Uranium 236, which is unstable. The Uranium 236 is then overwhelmed with instability and splits, creating a variety of smaller, stable atoms and some neutrons. These neutrons can then happily shoot towards other atoms and continue the chain reaction.

The nuclear reactor had a supply of a regulating substance as well: a flow of natural groundwater. As the atoms started to split, they released neutrons as well as energy. The water would slow down the neutrons, but the energy would heat up the water. After a time, the water would get so hot that it would start to boil off. Eventually, enough of the water would have boiled away until there wasn't enough left in the reactor to slow down the neutrons. The neutrons started shooting off into the ground without reacting with anything, and the reaction would stop. Then, the natural flow of groundwater would trickle in until there was enough water to start the whole process again. This watery cycle probably continued for hundreds of thousands of years.

Sadly, all good days are numbered, even for a happy natural reactor: The levels of uranium 235 got used up and the level was too low to sustain any more meaningful reactions. The reactor eventually slowed to a stop, leaving only a few traces behind that it ever existed – including the enigma of the "missing uranium."
