Politics / 2023 Presidency: North Has A Long Political Alliance With Igbo– Umar, ACF Leader by KillTheZombies: 10:44pm On Dec 24, 2018
Alhaji Kabiru Umar is an ally of President Muhammadu Buhari and leader of the pro-North Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). He has been with the president from their days in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and currently a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In this interview conducted by NOAH EBIJE, the businessman cum politician gave an idea of what awaits ex-military Generals opposed to Buhari’s re-election if he wins a second term in February 2019. He also said the North will rather back Igbo as Buhari’s successor in 2023 because Southeast is regarded as a natural ally of the North in the nation’s political history.

You were in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and today you are an APC chieftain. How has the transition been?

I’m in APC because I believe in it. APC is an amalgamation of three parties – ANPP, CPC, ACN and part of APGA; all of these parties are now in power at the centre. I belonged to an opposition party in the past, and I’m proud to say that. So, we’re an opposition bridge that came together and chased the party in power out of governance and I think that is a feat that one can be proud of. I didn’t join PDP when it was quite thick in performing, I did not join PDP, then why should I join it now when for the period they run the country, not that they did positive things, the negative things outweigh the positive things. So what is there for one to follow? I have never been a PDP man ever since the creation of that party. I have never been in PDP and I don’t hope to be.

Why do you say so?

You see, I’m a Northerner and we are backward in terms of money and education and the only thing we have that we are boastful of is political power, either during the first, second or whatever republic because politics is a game of number. And then during the 1999 political activity, the military made it a point that Obasanjo must be elected and I felt I was too small to change that but I could prevent myself from following PDP because I did not support Obasanjo presidency in 1999 simply because politics is a game of number. Why should we subjugate our right simply because some few individuals made it a point that one of them must be the president because of their personal arrangement. Why should I, Kabiru follow them?

From the picture you painted of retired Generals, it appears you are now more bitter by the current alleged gang-up by the ex-military chiefs against Buhari’s re-election in 2019. How bitter are you?

The issue of the gang up is selfish, why did they support Buhari in the first place? They supported him because they wanted him to do their bidding. The issue is simple, some of them have oil wells here and there, they don’t want to pay royalty, they don’t do anything. I mean they are supposed to be ashamed of what they are doing. If not that Buhari is even tolerant, he would have exposed them. See what General TY Danjuma said some months ago, he has unfettered access to Buhari or anybody in this country but see the statement he made and where he made it. It was disappointing and then nobody tells him anything. See what happened, late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua mentioned it when a minister visited him and the minister complained about electricity, I remember very well when Yar’adua told the minister that Obasanjo government spent over $600m, and yet there was no electricity, the minister couldn’t talk, never talked again. It was during Obasanjo period that we had the highest top ranking security officers and minister of justice killed in his own domain and nothing happened. I do remember there was one occasion that took place where Wole Soyinka said the killers of Bola Ige were in their midst. He did mention that the killers of Bola Ige were in the gathering, nobody challenged him because those who matter knew it. I think I have to mention names because it happened. Why was Audu Ogbe removed as chairman of PDP because he challenged Obasanjo, Omisore was in prison and he was made the senatorial candidate, Ogbe challenged it, and that was the beginning of his problem, not to talk of the issue between him and Atiku, something of that nature. Anybody in the same group wants their party to win, so there is nothing wrong. But Omisore was in prison and he became a senatorial candidate of PDP and eventually became the senator. You know for Obasanjo to begin to talk to people, I’ve been wondering why people should listen to him. I mean it is disappointing that people are listening to Obasanjo. I think it is disappointing. He said all unprintable things and lots of people are saying that. See what he did to the father of former Speaker of House of Reps, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, Alhaji Alani Bankole when he wanted to contest as governor of Ogun state. The same thing with Ajimobi, Amosun what did he do to them? What did he do to AD then? He made sure that all the governors were removed, when AD said they have no presidential candidate, they voted for Obasanjo but it was only Tinubu that survived. Is he somebody that can be trusted? You understand, he can’t be trusted by whatever yardstick.

Some Nigerians are saying that the northern numerical strength you mentioned is a fluke because of the allegation that the region often hire people from neighboring countries like Niger Republic to vote in the north. What is your reaction to this?

Those who are saying this don’t know what they are saying. The north does not need to bring anybody from anywhere to vote. We don’t have that kind of culture. We don’t have that culture of paying Peter to go and write exams for Gabriel. We don’t have that culture. That culture is alien to the north, that is the truth. How can somebody say northern population is a fluke? As a northerner, I feel bad because it is blackmail. From the first and second republics till date, the north does not have that culture of hiring political supporters from neighbouring countries.

One thing is that you cannot differentiate somebody from Maradi in Niger Republic from somebody in the neighbouring communities in Nigeria because they speak the same dialect, use same dresses, and what have you. But to say that we bring people from Niger Republic to come and vote in Nigeria, I think it is an insult to the north.

What is your view on the struggle between Igbo and Yoruba for the 2023 presidency?

I think that is their own issue, I am just a passenger. However, it depends on the time and the situation. The north has a long political alliance with Igbo. In the first and second republics, there was an alliance between the NPP and NPN, they called it Accord before it was broken. So it all depends on the situation and issues on the ground. Issues on the ground are very important, as well as the quality of the candidate. Whether such candidate comes from South-south or South-east or wherever, quality of the candidate and the prevailing situation will determine whatever… For now, nobody can predict the situation because saying it is one thing and actualising it is another thing. You never can tell what will happen before 2023, I stand to be corrected.

Evans must have kidnapped your brain or you must have being on Mars when Tinubu, Bisi Akande, Aregbe, Fayemi et al were shaping modern Nigerian politics with the extensive meetings and deal-brokering that merged ACN and CPC to produce the APC that would defeat the PDP at the centre and produce the situation today where all SW State are now under APC rule whereas it was only Lagos under OBJ in 1999.

Like Ramdeuter said, what exactly is the fate of the main political Parties from the SE today whereas ACN only grew in the SW to become a behemoth ? We know you lot are incapable of giving a Yoruba man credit for anything but we are past the age of caring about that now. We are no longer indulging political correctness.

The fact is that that Yorubas now know they are superior to Igbos politucally by far. You can go back to the drawing board so those coming ahead of you can be less sentimental and more politically effective or you can keep denying the obvious. Either approach is no worries for us as you are no threat at all.

Even here you have shamefully agreed to be slaves of the North in 2023 because you lack confidence to challenge. We don't take you into account when we make plans these days. You Igbos, politically, are now actually even behing the SS . Go and think about that and stop trying to compete with the Yorubas.

Your right to lament is sacrosanct, your right to write illegible gibberish is divine, but you will not be allowed to run away from the question. I'll drum the question into your ewedu skull once again.....

Tell us how yoruba 'bridge-building' have produced a yoruba presidency since lugard made you Nigerians. We all know how OBJ came to power. So tell us the other yoruba president that came to power by 'yoruba bridge-building' so that we can learn from the 'fountain of yoruba sophistication' and maybe change our corrugated Wichtech roofs to brown zinc roofs in the spirit of 'bridge-building sophistication'. We want to hear proper methodologies not effusive lamentations and emotional rants. We are waiting. grin

Coward. Kwankwaso and Obi indeed. A combination you put together in your room while talking to your imaginary friend ba? It is so amusing to always read Igbos say "we" as uf you have any clout or say at all in any influential Nigerian political Party .

Let me predict what will happen since you lot are so sentimental you must be treated like children.

Atiku will lose woefully in 2019. Lazy PDP leaders will then desperately try to rejoin APC. PDP will become weaker because it is not blessed with leaders who thrive in opposition like Tinubu. The Party of lazy thinkers will do nothing significant till 2022 where it will then field a candidate to copy APC.

Igbos won't be consulted because you are predictable with limited electoral value. All stakeholders know how you will vote and therefore don't need to negotiate with you. An example is the pathetic way you guys have already settled for playing second fiddle to the North in 2023. A whole 5 years away while SW is showing ambition laying claim to the top job. Who do you think the North will be looking to keep as pals based on what they are demanding? We are asking for the Presidency you are touting Obi plays wife to Kwankwaso thus showing the North you are their undemanding slaves. Disgraceful.

Yes your fight for 2023 Presidency would be difficult, because Nigeria distrusts you guys, but can you at least not try? Is 5 years not enough to repair your image, reach out to other Nigerians and build bridges? Rather you cowards have given up before the race has even begun because of the fact that hate of others is your main driving force in life. As long as Yorubas are denied the Presidency you are cool licking azz and playing houseboy. Watch as Yorubas go all the way to Aso Rock in 2023 to your disgrace and shock.

When I hear yoruba ascribing intelligence to themselves and give lectures about 'building bridges' in order to earn the presidency, I laugh myself to stupor.

yoruba 'built bridges' by forming OPC who threatened and killed other indgenes, burning houses and causing riots all over the SW because of the June 12 saga. I guess formation of a violent OPC that post-MKO is what you called as 'building bridge'. You yorubas very good are at being pretentious, you always pontificate and hardly practice what you preach, you only preach to deceive others who have not studied you lots down to protons, neutrons and electrons that makes up the Yoruba being and thought-pathways.

Can you tell us in details how yorubas 'built bridges' and became president, even as yoruba voters never voted the only president of yoruba extraction in 1999. I'm waiting for you to confuse yourself in a 'sophisticated' manner. Tell us. grin

Once the infrastructure is complete and a Yoruba man becomes the president, please train properly your boys and girls in the SE as their destiny is to come and serve in the West and pay taxes to our government.

Nobody conceded any right to you. The only time yoruba became president was when yoruba contested against yoruba because other Nigerians allowed it. That's the way it is going to be for the rest of Nigeria's existence. The country no longer owes the Yoruba anything. The MKO saga is over, you can no longer use it to blackmail other Nigerians.

Nobody needs Ibo votes and by the time we get to 2023, the Yoruba intelligence will prevail as usual. The same way our intelligence prevailed and we got OBJ to rule 8yrs and Osinbajo to be VP for 4 soon 8yrs

You were telling a lie that Ibos conceded the Presidency to Yorubas, The PDP Presidency was contested by OBJ and Ekwueme no one stepped down

And OBJ soundly defeated Ekwueme both times

No one concedes presidency to any region everyone fights for it. After Osibanjo, when it comes to the South again everyone will fight for it be it Akpabio, Oshiomole or Amaechi

Only a lazy man will be waiting for people to concede to him[/s]

Dayo, we've heard these lamentation and chestbeating about your so-called sophistication a billion times. E no change reality. It has become a cliche and everyone mocks you with it. grin

Fact 1. Yoruba waited for the rest of the country to conceed to the presidency to them in 1999. That's why the first and ONLY elected yoruba presidency emerged when all the parties fielded Yoruba. Therefore according to you yorubas are lazy. Na you talk am. No be me.

Fact 2. Ekwueme was never defeated by OBJ. Shagari was a figure that midwived 1999 presidency, him and the likes of Orji Uzor persuaded Ekwueme to step down because yorubas were still burning and killing non-indigenes in their region. OPC was founded that period as yoruba militia.

Fact 3. The only time yoruba voters ever put anyone in presidency was in 2015 (which was a close call because it was mainly between the North and a Southern minority) just yesterday. Before then, there had been 5 presidential elections and Yoruba voters failed while Eastern voters won. So the facts and factoids do not agree with you that Eastern votes are not needed. Even right there in Lagos, your political Candidates wear more Igbo regalia than agbada on campaign posters they spend millions to print. They seek Igbo endorsement. If Eastern votes are 'useless' that won't be happening.

Take heart and watch how the politics go in 2023, if Nigeria is still lucky enough to still remain a geographical expression by then. grin

life2017:
[s]Since the story of Fashola and Osibanjo asking South west to vote APC so that presidency will come to South west (South in general) in 2023, the way Igbos have reacted have been very pathetic and pitiful.

What many of them are saying is that PDP will field a Northerner if APC field a South west candidate in 2023.
What Igbos are saying by that is that they have accepted defeat ahead against a Yoruba candidate. They believe if APC field a Yoruba candidate and PDP field an Igbo candidate, that the Yoruba will beat the igbo with landslide victory. What a pitiful situation? That is what happen when u isolate yourself and burn down bridges over lack of emotional intelligence!

It means Igbos don't believe any Igbo man dead or alive can defeat any Yoruba man in 2023. And they also don't believe any Igbo man dead or alive can defeat a Northerner in Nigeria Presidential race.

Thus what Igbos are hoping for is a Situation where the two major parties (APC and PDP) field candidate from South East so that they won't have to compete or work for it. That is delusion. Even Buhari and Atiku are not from the same geopolitical zone. Buhari is north west while Atiku is North east.

What Igbos fail to understand is that South South might have join South East on Anti Buhari stand, South South will not join them on Anti Yoruba Stand. If a Yoruba contest against a Northerner in 2023, South South will give most vote to the Yoruba. South South is not part of the cold war between Yorubas and Igbos. We are not stupid. We SS don't have any personal issue with the Yorubas.

Another thing Igbos may fail to understand is that Northerners are calculative and politically mature. Even if PDP field kwankwanso, he will not get a unified Northern support against a Yoruba candidate from APC as long as Buhari endorse the Yoruba with clear message of one good turn deserves another. Alot of Northerners will allign with the Yoruba candidate. Should the Yoruba candidate win despite South East opposition, just know the next time presidency comes to South it will come to South South.

As far as I am concerned if Buhari wins 2019, 2023 presidency will be contested by the whole South. That is South South, South East and South West will compete for it. No Southern region will get it on a platter of gold. Every region and tribe in the South is qualified for Southern Presidency in 2023. After all, South South is yet to do Eight years. We did just 5.3 years. We are still yet to govern for full blown 8 years . Nobody should be hoping to get 2023 presidency as a gift. Every region in the South is qualified. Period.

In summary, the most peaceful scenario in 2023 in the case Buhari wins 2019, is if APC chose a South South candidate. Both igbo and Yoruba will allign. None of them will want to be seen as enemy of South South because of Niger Delta oil. And Nothing will destroy Biafra agitation more than APC fielding a South South Candidate and PDP fielding a South East candidate or a Northern candidate. As there is no one Nigeria without South South oil, there is no Biafra without South South Oil. South South oil is the umblical cord keeping Nigeria together as one.[/s]

Demented yoro-lamentations.

You Yoruba always think you are wise and others are stupid. Buhari and Atiku are both from the north and fulani. The fundamental thing is they are both fulani.

Nigerians and Igbos also did the same for yorubas after they cried for years about MKO's murder. Two parties fielded two yorubas OBJ and falae, even Alex Ekweme who was supported by the likes of Shagari for presidency was begged to step down for OBJ Yoruba presidency.

Now tell me why you ingrates can't do the same for Igbos but rather taunt them and tell the whole world how you'll always stand against Igbo presidency after their votes delivered a Yoruba into presidency in 1999?
They have woken up and are very much alive to your shenanigans, and will play your brand of 'sophisticated' politics which makes you think you smarter than everyone else.

FYI, the SESS (old East) always vote in the same pattern since independence because they think alike. There will be no division in the way the SE and SS votes because of yorubas who even treacherously voted against the SS in 2015. You can bank on that.

You want the solution to the problem? Field two Igbo men in the major political parties, Yoruba should then vote Igbo the way Igbo have voted for yorubas and north since 1970s till date. No Igbo man tried to play spoiler when yorubas were asking for pacification over MKO in 1999, if yorubas don't believe in the equity of having Igbo leadership then they can as well forget about the presidency too. Until they decide to come to equity with clean hands.

THERE WILL BE NO YORUBA PRESIDENCY TILL THE EAST TAKES IT'S RIGHTFUL TURN. EXCEPT A NORTHERN PRESIDENT DIES AND A YORUBA VP ASSUMES LEADERSHIP. IT'S A SUREBANKER!

Eyes don open.
