ekt_bear: I guess it is just a fundamental difference in philosophy. Most right thinking Nigerians share your view, the only people opposing this are the comedians and the jegudujera's with zero vision and no foresight beyond their Agbada pocket. . .and even they don't believe what they say most times. |

Can one of you math-heads post the formula for the theory of unified everything? Because I think Omisore is advocating that we should all Join PDP to solve Nigerias problems. Chisore might be on to something Everybody will belong to one party and happily share allocation till infinity. BTW on a more serious note, this is another reason why I think ACN should try and work with Mimiko w/o pushing him to join ACN. |

I can understand the need to protect patients and children, but this seems pretty harsh. I wonder why the Dr. is not fighting a legal battle though, like she just gave up and moved away. must be frustrating for her. |

lagerwhenindoubt: @If the constitutional platform to include a State-Police in the Security provisions of the Constitution is still a distant mirage, why not start by establishing the beginnings of a State-run Security Agency (like Private Security firms do) with World-Class Training in Crime Detection, Forensics Analysis, Civil defense/Social interaction, Firearms, driving etc. Your intentions are good, that much is clear. But how do you expect states to do this when the constitution has no provision for state Police? Under which department are we going to put this? A recent example: Few weeks ago we all saw the uproar created by PDP in Osun when they accused the Governor of keeping Private security agents while preventing the SSS from following him around. They argued that SSS should have uncontrolled access to his activities and movement and he's not allowed to create a parallel police. see? If we don't radically change that law, your plan here cannot work. You see, this is why I detest gradualism: When you are faced with a radically broken system such as the one we have in Nigeria, gradualism cannot fix our situation, radical changes will. That is why we need to ensure we vote in people who are ready and willing to shake up the system, not gradualists and merchants of continuity. |

Gbawe: Very true. Good point. Politically motivated killings or crimes constitute what % of crimes? 1%? 5%? let's even say 20%, which is probably impossible. What about the rest? Yes Mr. Gbawe, it will be worse. Politics is local especially the SS and SW politics. I can't imagine state policing with Tinubu or Ibori or Sylva or Anenih there. It does not take an Einstein to know that such powers in the hands of certain people would mean death to opposition politics. This is a risk most Nigerians are unwilling to take. Nigerians are not yet mature to handle such. We can fix the issue of people like Tinubu, Anenih, Ibori and co by having elected police chiefs, BTW you can't solve the problem 100%, the goal should be to reduce it. The party in power will still have some influence, best thing is to keep reforming the system towards perfection, not to sit down and assume our people are too immature. Even the argument that local politicians will use the Police for vendetta ignores the current reality where federal affliated Politicians and political parties use the same federally controlled police to perpetrate all kinds of evil. That reality negates that argument against state police and leaves us with the issue Gbawe raised about other types of crimes. Jason, there is no reason why our police chiefs should not be locally controlled, locally funded and locally recruited, no reason why someone unfamiliar with my community and controlled by people 2000KM from us should be responsible for the safety of my family and property. It makes no sense. I don't need my police officers to call Abuja before they investigate a crime on my street. We can have a provision for a federal police for inter-state crimes or crimes beyond the capacity of local police, but not everything like we currently have. All these brings us to the issue of funding, revenue and our pseudo-federalism where Abuja determines how much tax you can keep for your local economy or how much of your resources you can exploit and use solely for your own benefit. It is too stifling really. edit. |

That politics is local is one of the MAIN reasons for a local police or State police. I cannot see the reason why FG controlled police is less dangerous than State or LG controlled ones. We've had this argument several times on NL. Maybe I should find my old post on the issue and repost here. I'm yet to see any strong argument against State or even LG controlled police here. |

The pain and emotion expressed is more important than grammar. He passed accross his message. Some very familiar names in that tribute. .too much blood has been shed for this British mistake. .May Olaitan's soul rest with the ancestors. Still makes no damn sense. Can't understand why they had to kill him. |

rhymz: , if transporting materials, goods and services have not been shown to be a major problem in the state then Ekiti state government giving their very lean pocket do not have any business "converting the state to a huge construction site But transportation is a huge problem in the state though, I've been there, i've seen it. Just like we have in many States in the South ( i've not travelled extensively in the North) Farm-to-town roads are terrible. Roads linking various towns are also in pretty bad shape. In fairness to him, Fayose reconstructed some city roads and a few inter-city ones, but they were not well maintained and they were poorly constructed. Having said that, I've not seen these roads Fayemi is constructing, so I'll hold judgement until he's done. He needs to get really busy though. There's a lot to do. Slightly off-topic: I Agree with the points being made about comparative advantage, it is key, but like Aigbofa and others alluded to, we will first need to deal with the "Elephant in the room" which is the structure of our pseudo-federal system. Until states and local govts get the power and authority to do many of the things presently cornered by Abuja, we will continue in this cycle of madness. |

Is there really any State Governor in Nigeria that has fixed or can fix the Electricity problem in their state? I'm not aware of one. I'll like to be educated though. Nigeria has a centralized Electrical infrastructure, from policy to pricing, everything is controlled from Abuja. Except something changed while I was sleeping yesterday sha. |

ekt_bear: Kilode, if you believe that there was nothing we disagreed about, then with no offense intended, you need to reread what was written. I read it, I guess both of your clarifications made your arguments seem the same to me. Maybe I did not read well, that was just how I saw it. Anyway, that's not too important. |
Politics / Re: Fayemi: Turning Ekiti Into A Huge Construction Site. by Kilode1: 8:51pm On May 05, 2012 |
Between ekt_bear and Papabrowne's arguments I honestly cannot see much that they disagree about. Must be the nature of online forum arguments that we tend write so much and later find that we are saying the same thing. States like Ekiti need Capital investment in infrastructure ( electricity, road, water e.t.c) even if the power station is located in Kafancha as long as its available and Ekiti can access it. They both agree on this. States like Ekiti need Agribusiness, light manufacturing, services. All na the same. None will develop without electricity and investment in the support infrastructures. I think they both agree on this. Fayemi better get busy. @papabrowne, that "doctrine of settled issues" only exist in the moin moin brain of Babangida, did the loudmouth not call for a SNC few months ago. Nothing is settled in Nigeria. 1 Like |

PapaBrowne: At this stage? with the poor infrastructure? I don't think tourism can help them. Infrastructures such as road, Water and Electricity together constitute the life blood of businesses like that. Yes. Agribusiness can help Ekiti in the medium term. On the long run, I think Ekiti Private business sector will have to take a good look at services too. Tech support services, Education support businesses, but still, capital investments in infrastructure is key to these things. This is another reason why states with close proximity to Lagos need that SW regional agenda to work and help jump-start their development. Lagos is probably Africa's 4th Largest Economy as a standalone country, Huge market for businesses, agric produce and services originating from states like Ekiti for example. About "just doing his job", I think it is important to inform the populace on whatever it is that's being done. Do so with every tool at your disposal including well presented pictures and videos. That way, the opposition doesn't get to define you. Fashola is doing a great job at that. So is Oshiomole. I wonder why Fayemi has not hired you for his PR job |
Politics / Re: Fayemi: Turning Ekiti Into A Huge Construction Site. by Kilode1: 3:53pm On May 05, 2012 |
PapaBrowne: In this digital age of high resolution cameras on every smartphone, if there are no pictures to prove it, then its a big fat lie! Ado-Ekiti has a very pretty view from the hills surrounding it. Those small Ekiti towns will make great resorts. @Topic, he should just do his job, when he's done, we will say, well done. |

I found out that pros-titutes in hundreds actually provide their services even in the market places in Yaba,Tinubu and other markets in Lagos. The same thing obtains in Benin Enugu , Aba and Onitsha and all these are southern women despite their much hyped education and freedom. Nagoma, this is absolutely incorrect and you know it. In most African societies, regardless of religious beliefs, Prostitution is still a hush hush affair, not something you see people doing openly at their main markets. Even in liberal western societies people don't mass in their hundreds at the main markets to pros_titute. Haba! I know you know this though. Even on Nairaland sef Pros-titute is a word you can't type without doing ojoro |

Politics / Re: They Have Killed My Son - Oshiomhole by Kilode1: 5:30am On May 05, 2012 |
Like I said on the other thread, this was an absolutely senseless killing. Except it was for something far from current Edo politics. Call me naive, I just don't see how PDP can defeat Oshiomhole in the next election, no way at all. That was clear to any serious watcher of Edo politics. So I fail to see why they had to kill the young man, if indeed he was killed for political reasons. Maybe PDP did not do it. Several things were clear before yesterday. 1. PDP has an history of failure in Edo State, no thanks to Lucky Igbinedion's years of absolute failure. I experienced it, it was not preety. 2. The incumbent candidate - Oshiomhole, by Nigerian standards, is not a " make we go try our luck politician" I don't always agree with his policies and position, but: -Oshimhole is a grassroot politician, one of the most effective in Nigeria. -Oshiomhole is a veteran organizer in and out of politics, like him or hate him, he is effective as a campaigner. -Oshiomhole, agree with him or not, knows when to compromise. From NLC to LP to ACN he's demonstrated his ability to build consensus, compromise and work with people he previously fought against. -Oshiomhole is a charismatic incumbent governor with a serious public goodwill advantage, even GEJ can't oppose him too harshly in public. -Did I say PDP overplayed their hands last time they governed? All these plus more makes me wonder why PDP would think they can win the election via intimidation, It makes no sense, it will lead to unnecessary killings like the one we just saw. And they will most cetainly still lose. I'm not convinced PDP killed the guy, makes no sense to cause chaos knowing you'll still lose, except you are a pea brain fool with too much Ogogoro in your blood. I don't understand what the killers aimed to achieve. Makes no damn sense. 12 Likes |

Entrenched systems rarely change in the absence of cataclysmic events. Gradualism won't bring about the change we need, at least not in this generation. Probably never. Ask MLK.
