Politics / Re: Regional Integration Will Not Solve Our Problem by Kilode1: 6:45pm On May 07, 2012
ekt_bear: I guess it is just a fundamental difference in philosophy.

Some believe that Yorubaland cannot do anything without oil allocations. That the only hope is to align with the PDP government at the center.

I mean, I can sort of see why one would think this...though it seems pretty pessimistic tbh.

For me, I would rather try to go it alone and see what happens. The best thing we can do is to learn to live without the FG, and without oil wealth.

Hell, we aren't even in a situation where our allocations have been cut to zero.

Aregbe thumbs his nose at the FG on a weekly basis, but every month he still gets a check.

This cycle of dependency must be broken.

I believe that the Yoruba are a great people. That they can survive, prosper, and reach heights they've never reached before.

Even with zero oil money.

Most right thinking Nigerians share your view, the only people opposing this are the comedians and the jegudujera's with zero vision and no foresight beyond their Agbada pocket.

. .and even they don't believe what they say most times.

Can one of you math-heads post the formula for the theory of unified everything? Because I think Omisore is advocating that we should all Join PDP to solve Nigerias problems. Chisore might be on to something grin

Everybody will belong to one party and happily share allocation till infinity.

BTW on a more serious note, this is another reason why I think ACN should try and work with Mimiko w/o pushing him to join ACN.

lagerwhenindoubt: @If the constitutional platform to include a State-Police in the Security provisions of the Constitution is still a distant mirage, why not start by establishing the beginnings of a State-run Security Agency (like Private Security firms do) with World-Class Training in Crime Detection, Forensics Analysis, Civil defense/Social interaction, Firearms, driving etc.

It can start with each LG funding a group of qualified individuals into the program and I am fairly confident that Lagos state budget can accommodate training for at least 500 individuals all-year round. during this time a strategy to lobby for its inclusion in the constitution can be worked at national levels. what better time than now when it is sticking out like a sore thumb

Your intentions are good, that much is clear.

But how do you expect states to do this when the constitution has no provision for state Police? Under which department are we going to put this?

A recent example: Few weeks ago we all saw the uproar created by PDP in Osun when they accused the Governor of keeping Private security agents while preventing the SSS from following him around. They argued that SSS should have uncontrolled access to his activities and movement and he's not allowed to create a parallel police. see?

If we don't radically change that law, your plan here cannot work.

You see, this is why I detest gradualism:

When you are faced with a radically broken system such as the one we have in Nigeria, gradualism cannot fix our situation, radical changes will.

That is why we need to ensure we vote in people who are ready and willing to shake up the system, not gradualists and merchants of continuity.
Politics / Re: ACN Governors Demand Security System Reforms. by Kilode1: 1:31pm On May 07, 2012
Gbawe:

You keep ignoring what is terribly obvious. You don't make decisions based on Police reforms according to Politics. You start, first and foremost, by looking at what is best for those who , by far, constitute the majority vis-avis the protection of lives and property !!!

The NPF is currently failing badly at protecting millions of Nigerians and it seems rather high-handed for anyone to suggest a valid reason against State police is the notion Governors may use their Police force against political opponent. This totally ignores the core brief of the duty of any Police force i.e the Protection of lives and property.

This is an insiduous problem that has gained hold in the minds of most Nigerians who are comparatively well-off or comfortable. We tend to forget that issues must remain about the millions of ordinary Nigerians and not the the small minority who form the elite and political class. This is the mentality that has given rise to 4 Police officers being deployed to gaurd one Politician or private businessman. Your argument just implies that the needs of Politicians takes precedence above those of ordinary Nigerians.

Very true. Good point. Politically motivated killings or crimes constitute what % of crimes? 1%? 5%? let's even say 20%, which is probably impossible. What about the rest?

Yes Mr. Gbawe, it will be worse. Politics is local especially the SS and SW politics. I can't imagine state policing with Tinubu or Ibori or Sylva or Anenih there. It does not take an Einstein to know that such powers in the hands of certain people would mean death to opposition politics. This is a risk most Nigerians are unwilling to take. Nigerians are not yet mature to handle such.

We can fix the issue of people like Tinubu, Anenih, Ibori and co by having elected police chiefs, BTW you can't solve the problem 100%, the goal should be to reduce it. The party in power will still have some influence, best thing is to keep reforming the system towards perfection, not to sit down and assume our people are too immature.

Even the argument that local politicians will use the Police for vendetta ignores the current reality where federal affliated Politicians and political parties use the same federally controlled police to perpetrate all kinds of evil.

That reality negates that argument against state police and leaves us with the issue Gbawe raised about other types of crimes.

Jason, there is no reason why our police chiefs should not be locally controlled, locally funded and locally recruited, no reason why someone unfamiliar with my community and controlled by people 2000KM from us should be responsible for the safety of my family and property. It makes no sense. I don't need my police officers to call Abuja before they investigate a crime on my street.

We can have a provision for a federal police for inter-state crimes or crimes beyond the capacity of local police, but not everything like we currently have.

All these brings us to the issue of funding, revenue and our pseudo-federalism where Abuja determines how much tax you can keep for your local economy or how much of your resources you can exploit and use solely for your own benefit. It is too stifling really.

edit.
Politics / Re: ACN Governors Demand Security System Reforms. by Kilode1: 12:51pm On May 07, 2012
That politics is local is one of the MAIN reasons for a local police or State police.

I cannot see the reason why FG controlled police is less dangerous than State or LG controlled ones. We've had this argument several times on NL.

Maybe I should find my old post on the issue and repost here. I'm yet to see any strong argument against State or even LG controlled police here.

Politics / Re: Fayemi: Turning Ekiti Into A Huge Construction Site. by Kilode1: 4:43am On May 06, 2012
rhymz: , if transporting materials, goods and services have not been shown to be a major problem in the state then Ekiti state government giving their very lean pocket do not have any business "converting the state to a huge construction site

But transportation is a huge problem in the state though, I've been there, i've seen it. Just like we have in many States in the South ( i've not travelled extensively in the North) Farm-to-town roads are terrible. Roads linking various towns are also in pretty bad shape. In fairness to him, Fayose reconstructed some city roads and a few inter-city ones, but they were not well maintained and they were poorly constructed.

Having said that, I've not seen these roads Fayemi is constructing, so I'll hold judgement until he's done. He needs to get really busy though. There's a lot to do.

Slightly off-topic: I Agree with the points being made about comparative advantage, it is key, but like Aigbofa and others alluded to, we will first need to deal with the "Elephant in the room" which is the structure of our pseudo-federal system. Until states and local govts get the power and authority to do many of the things presently cornered by Abuja, we will continue in this cycle of madness.
Politics / Re: Fayemi: Turning Ekiti Into A Huge Construction Site. by Kilode1: 9:38pm On May 05, 2012
Is there really any State Governor in Nigeria that has fixed or can fix the Electricity problem in their state?

I'm not aware of one. I'll like to be educated though.

Nigeria has a centralized Electrical infrastructure, from policy to pricing, everything is controlled from Abuja. Except something changed while I was sleeping yesterday sha.

Politics / Re: Fayemi: Turning Ekiti Into A Huge Construction Site. by Kilode1: 8:51pm On May 05, 2012
Between ekt_bear and Papabrowne's arguments I honestly cannot see much that they disagree about. Must be the nature of online forum arguments that we tend write so much and later find that we are saying the same thing.

States like Ekiti need Capital investment in infrastructure ( electricity, road, water e.t.c) even if the power station is located in Kafancha as long as its available and Ekiti can access it. They both agree on this.

States like Ekiti need Agribusiness, light manufacturing, services. All na the same. None will develop without electricity and investment in the support infrastructures. I think they both agree on this.

Fayemi better get busy.

@papabrowne, that "doctrine of settled issues" only exist in the moin moin brain of Babangida, did the loudmouth not call for a SNC few months ago. Nothing is settled in Nigeria.

PapaBrowne:

Totally agree! They would make very cool rural resorts. Can be supported with spas and wellness centers as well as some form of Agrotourism!
But would that be sufficient to provide a viable economy for the state. Not really. AgriBusiness is the way forward for a state like Ekiti.

At this stage? with the poor infrastructure? I don't think tourism can help them. Infrastructures such as road, Water and Electricity together constitute the life blood of businesses like that.

Yes. Agribusiness can help Ekiti in the medium term. On the long run, I think Ekiti Private business sector will have to take a good look at services too. Tech support services, Education support businesses, but still, capital investments in infrastructure is key to these things.

This is another reason why states with close proximity to Lagos need that SW regional agenda to work and help jump-start their development. Lagos is probably Africa's 4th Largest Economy as a standalone country, Huge market for businesses, agric produce and services originating from states like Ekiti for example.

About "just doing his job", I think it is important to inform the populace on whatever it is that's being done. Do so with every tool at your disposal including well presented pictures and videos. That way, the opposition doesn't get to define you. Fashola is doing a great job at that. So is Oshiomole.

I found out that pros-titutes in hundreds actually provide their services even in the market places in Yaba,Tinubu and other markets in Lagos. The same thing obtains in Benin Enugu , Aba and Onitsha and all these are southern women despite their much hyped education and freedom.

Nagoma, this is absolutely incorrect and you know it. In most African societies, regardless of religious beliefs, Prostitution is still a hush hush affair, not something you see people doing openly at their main markets. Even in liberal western societies people don't mass in their hundreds at the main markets to pros_titute. Haba!

I know you know this though.

Zhul-fiqar:

the difference between Mut'ah or temporary marriage and prostitution can be summarized in one analogy:

thw difference between making profit out of trade and making profit out of usury.God permitted trade but prohibited usury.

if i am to expand forward, mut'ah is not used for material gain in which the woman's body is sold out.in mut'ah marriage the conditions that are present in Islamic marriage also exist.the only difference is that in mut'ah marriage, the couple accept to agree on a time frame for the marriage.those who solicit prostitutes to perform mut'ah marriage are not performing mut'ah marriage.a prostitutes looks to sleep with as many men as possible in the shortest period of time.it is like a taxi service.in mut'ah on the other hand, the woman only sleeps with one man.and after the marriage is dissolved,IDDAH or a waiting period (i think of four months) is observed by the woman before she can enter into another marriage agreement,be it temporary or permanent.during the waiting period, she must not sleep with any man,or else she is committing fornication and in an islamic state she would be punished for that.also,in mut'ah there mahr and dowry and it is a written agreement that is mutually agreed upon.

you can read more about the question of the morality on mut'uah marriage:

you can also read all details about mut'ah marriage, how it is performed, why and evidence of it in the bible:

Politics / Re: They Have Killed My Son - Oshiomhole by Kilode1: 5:30am On May 05, 2012
Like I said on the other thread, this was an absolutely senseless killing. Except it was for something far from current Edo politics.

Call me naive, I just don't see how PDP can defeat Oshiomhole in the next election, no way at all. That was clear to any serious watcher of Edo politics. So I fail to see why they had to kill the young man, if indeed he was killed for political reasons. Maybe PDP did not do it.

Several things were clear before yesterday.

1. PDP has an history of failure in Edo State, no thanks to Lucky Igbinedion's years of absolute failure. I experienced it, it was not preety.

2. The incumbent candidate - Oshiomhole, by Nigerian standards, is not a " make we go try our luck politician" I don't always agree with his policies and position, but:
-Oshimhole is a grassroot politician, one of the most effective in Nigeria.
-Oshiomhole is a veteran organizer in and out of politics, like him or hate him, he is effective as a campaigner.
-Oshiomhole, agree with him or not, knows when to compromise. From NLC to LP to ACN he's demonstrated his ability to build consensus, compromise and work with people he previously fought against.
-Oshiomhole is a charismatic incumbent governor with a serious public goodwill advantage, even GEJ can't oppose him too harshly in public.
-Did I say PDP overplayed their hands last time they governed?

All these plus more makes me wonder why PDP would think they can win the election via intimidation, It makes no sense, it will lead to unnecessary killings like the one we just saw. And they will most cetainly still lose.

I'm not convinced PDP killed the guy, makes no sense to cause chaos knowing you'll still lose, except you are a pea brain fool with too much Ogogoro in your blood.

I don't understand what the killers aimed to achieve. Makes no damn sense.

Dokubo vows to prevent rigging of Edo governorship poll

By Osagie Otabor 02/04/2012 15:43:00

Dokubo
Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Asari Dokunbo has vowed to lead his members to Edo State on July 14 to ensure that one-man-one-vote prevails during the gubernatorial election.

He said the Peoples Democratic Party must not be allowed to rig its way back to power in the state.

Alhaji Dokunbo spoke in Benin City last weekend while delivering a lecture on Governor Adams Oshiomhole re-election with the theme, “Niger Delta: Excellence in Leadership and Good Governance-the Adams Oshiomhole Example.”
His words, “Edo people should not play politics with this election. They have seen the difference between light and darkness.”

“They (PDP) are going to perfect more strategy. They have set Benin people against other tribes by bringing a Benin candidate. I want to tell you that PDP candidate is April fool. They picked him to win votes.”

“We will be present on the day of election like a tsunami. We will tell Goodluck Jonathan to remove his hands. Evil must be defeated. There must be something giving PDP courage if not let them show us what they have done somewhere,” he said.

The NDPVF leader described Oshiomhole as "the greatest thing" that happened to the people of Niger Delta.

158. Mr Timi Alaibe is a very fraudulent politician in Nigeria known for amassing
great wealth through the theft of public funds. He has been a civil servant all

my involvement on a gut feeling and was trying to curry favour with
President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the governorship elections in the
Bayelsa State.
159. Mr Frances Osuwo (also spelled Osuvwo) through his lawyer complained
that he was forced to sign a statement prepared by Mr Raphael Damfebo

160. Mr Francis Osuwo was denied access to a lawyer until he signed the
statement required by the Nigerian interrogators.
161. There has been reports in the Media that Mr Osuwo has since passed away

thereof.

one of its informants in South Africa Mr Justin Malcolm Umejesi (aka Ben

163. Mr Justin Malcolm Umejesi (aka Ben Jessy) is well known to the Nigerian

Mr Justin Umejesi has had no contact with me since early 2007.
165. The Nigerian Government had intended to obtain a confession statement
from Mr Umejesi who was to have admitted to seeing me in possession of
items he now believed to be used in the of bombs.
166. The revelation at my previous bail hearing that Mr Umejesi had been
scamming the High Commission for years and the High Commission's later
discovery of a photograph that Mr Umejesi had taken with the South African
President Mr Jacob Zuma making the rounds within the Nigerian community
and have rendered Mr Umejesi useless to the Nigerian Government.

Amongst those arrested was the Campaign manager
of General Babangida, Dr Raymond Dokpesi.
138. My refusal to cooperate in this scheme resulted in President Goodluck
Jonathan placing a call to President Jacob Zuma during the evening of 1
October 2010, requesting for President Zuma's personal assistance in
securing my arrest. My noncooperation was interpreted by President
Goodluck Jonathan as support for the Northern politicians. The South
African Government's direct interference was responsible for securing
search and arrest warrants against me.
139. Mr Jituboh's post bombing call to me was widely publicised in the Nigerian
media. If he made these call without the approval of the Nigerian President
to someone whom the Nigerian Government labels a terrorist, Mr Jituboh
would not only have lost his job but would have immediately been arrested.
140. Subsequent to Mr Jituboh's call, I ignored 4 calls from the Minister for the
Niger Delta, Mr Orubebe and 2 calls from an aide to the Minister, Mr
Abraham Gillow. I assumed they were also calling to solicit my assistance in
diverting blame for the bombings of 1 October 2010.
141. During the morning of 2 October 2010, I received two SMS'es from Mr Tony
Uranta. As earlier stated, Mr Uranata is acknowledged by Nigerians to be
responsible for "dirty tasks" President Goodluck Jonathan would not wish to

be traced to him.
142. The SMS'es were sent from Mr Uranta's number +2348075407801.

MEND).
144. The final SMS sent at 10h28:32 am states; - "The government will blame on

defence was that his phone was stolen on the day in question and the thief
