PoliticsASUU Strike: Wike Is A Cluesless Traitor, Says New PDP by kingbru(op): 4:29pm On Oct 09, 2013
The “New” Peoples Democratic Party says it read with dismay the statement credited to the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the breakaway Peoples Democratic Party led by Alhaji Baraje were behind the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, expressed its dismay in a statement saying, “We would have ordinarily ignored Wike’s outburst as the ranting of a confused and clueless minister but have decided to reply so as to set the record straight. We challenge Wike to produce evidence to back up his allegation or bury his head in shame forever”.

“The “nPDP” questioned if Gov. Amaechi or any other of their member negotiated on behalf of the Federal Government in 2009 when it reached the agreement with ASUU, which it has inexplicably refused to honour, thus laying the foundation for the lingering strike that has mortgaged the future of innocent Nigerian youths? And did any member of New PDP negotiate on the part of ASUU during the recently deadlocked talks with the FG over the strike?”, the party asked.

The faction noted that it was unfortunate for Wike to trivialise the issue and to ridicule himself, instead of committing himself towards finding a solution to the crippling strike. “Unfortunately, it is the actions and utterances of court jesters like Wike that have made perceptive Nigerians to describe the Goodluck Jonathan administration as a kindergarten government”, the faction said.

Mr Eze said, “For Wike to have made this statement against a group that ordered her members to fast and pray for this unfortunate strike for over a week and even set up a Committee under the Chairmanship of His Excellency, Gov Babangida Aliyu to proffer solutions on how to come out of the quagmire occasioned by Wike’s inability simply demonstrates the lack of wisdom on his side”.

Part of the statement reads:

“We are at a loss as to how a supposedly serious government should continue to retain such an incompetent and unserious mind as a Minister of the very strategic Ministry of Education in a country teeming with accomplished educationists and administrators if not for undemocratic motor-park democracy he specializes on.

“In any case, we are not overly surprised by Wike’s tirade because a man who could engineer the stoning of visiting State Governors from other parts of the country without caring a hoot about the consequences is capable of saying or doing anything, no matter how outrageous.

“Let us reiterate that should he ever make another derogatory statement about the Baraje led PDP, we will teach him some lessons on how to talk as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he should note that New PDP is not Rivers State where he has because of his greed mess up governance!

“The fact remains that to say that Wike is a disaster as a Minister is to state the obvious. We advise him to minimize the damage which he is doing to the Jonathan administration by concentrating on his work instead of busying himself making enemies for the President whom he pretends to be loyally serving but whose downfall he is secretly plotting in keeping with his traitorous nature.

“Instead of President Jonathan addressing enemies within his cabinet he is busy persecuting and embarrassing his true friends and political associates that matters in his political calculations!

“A word is enough for the wise”.

Health'diet Or Die,' World’s Fattest Woman! by kingbru(op): 4:36pm On Dec 09, 2010
A woman believed to be the world's fattest at 50 stone (700lbs) is facing a battle to shed weight after being told by doctors she could die.

Terri Smith is confined to her bedroom in her Ohio home unable to move, stand or roll over by herself.

Suffering from severe headaches which doctors fear could stem from a brain problem, Terri urgently needs a brain scan - but is too big to fit inside an MRI machine.
To undergo the scan and receive the life-saving treatment she may require, Terri is now embarking on a weight loss regime of exercise and healthy eating.

She relies on her husband Myron, 44, and oldest daughter Najah, 30, to do everything for her.

The 49-year-old must be washed, fed and dressed on the bed and wears nappies which her daughter and husband change.

'My husband is my guardian angel,' said Terri.

'He's stuck by me through everything. Most men would have left a long time ago and who could blame them but Myron is a living saint.'

Terri was always large - at age seven she weighed almost eight stone (112lbs).

'My nickname at school was fatso,' she said. 'No one wanted me on their sports team and that didn't help the fat.

'We grew up on soul food and no one thought anything about it.
That's just what people did where I'm from. We never watched what we ate at all and we didn't know what was healthy and what wasn't.'

By the age of 20 Terri weighed 18 stone (252lbs) but she remained active and held a job as a mental health care worker for 20 years.

'I used to help people wash, feed and dress themselves,' she said.

'Back then I never thought that the tables would turn and someone would be doing all that stuff for me.'

After marrying her husband in 1986 Terri was big but happy.

'I prayed for a man like Myron and he came to me,' she said 'He's kind, gentle and he loves me for who

'I am. Even now he tells me I'm pretty, that man is amazing.'

But she continued to eat the same diet and kept on growing, while her husband and daughter stayed slim.

Terri, who suffers severe headaches, needs an MRI scan to check for a potential brain tumour but is too big to fit in any scanners or into the doors of a hospital clinic.
She faces a race against time to lose weight in a bid to qualify for gastric surgery to save her life.

When Terri was 32 she developed severe arthritis in her knees and couldn't walk for more than a few steps.

She was given an electric wheelchair and the lack of exercise made the weight pile on.

'I used to walk everywhere and be on my feet at work but suddenly I was trapped,' she said.

As the years passed her weight ballooned until she could hardly stand.

Then, after her doctor changed her diuretic medication, she gained a staggering 6.5 stone (91lb) in 30 days. She suddenly found herself bedbound and has been trapped for almost three years.

Dr. Dariush Saghafi said: "I have been seeing Terri for six months.

'Caring for someone of Terri's size is very difficult. It is very hard to move and transport her. Hospitals do not have equipment to hold someone of her girth
Terri needs an MRI but there are no machines in the region big enough to take her weight.

'We thought that it might be possible for Terri to have an MRI at the Cleveland Zoo in the machine used for the elephants and rhinos but the zoo does not have a licence for humans.

'We're hoping the Cleveland clinic can find an MRI for Terri.'

SportsWhy Does The West Dominate African Football? by kingbru(op): 9:06am On Nov 20, 2010
By Piers Edwards
The BBC shortlist for the 2010 African Footballer of the Year has underlined West Africa's dominance of such awards - because around three-quarters of winners of both the BBC and Confederation of African Football (Caf) accolades hail from the region.

Great names stand out: Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu (Nigeria), Abedi Pele and Michael Essien (Ghana), Ivorian Didier Drogba, and Roger Milla and Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon) to name but a few.

Liberia's George Weah, meanwhile, is the only African to be crowned Fifa World Player of the Year.

Weah also won the BBC award in 1995 and this year, another West African will join him - with Drogba and Eto'o joined on the shortlist by Yaya Toure, Asamoah Gyan and Andre 'Dede' Ayew.
And it's not just a matter of a few talented individuals - look at the results and you will also see that West Africa's footballing pre-eminence is unquestionable:

Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana are Africa's only ever World Cup quarter-finalists; Nigeria and Cameroon are the continent's sole winners of Olympic gold, while Nigeria and Ghana share six Fifa world titles at U17 and U20 level.

So what explains this superiority?

"Such dominance always comes down to genetics and environmental arguments," sports scientist Tim Noakes told me on the line from Cape Town.

"West Africans are bigger and stronger than the rest of the continent - with the world's best sprinters originating from the area."

"East Africans are of course the distance runners - with a much smaller, lighter frame and the southern and northern Africans largely share that build.

"But West Africans' physical attributes would mean nothing unless there's also the right environment and sportsmen train hard."

Football wannabes exert themselves across all Africa but the eastern and southern regions, despite huge enthusiasm for football, still trail far behind.

East Africa has never qualified for a World Cup and its two Nations Cup titles would seem paltry - until compared to southern Africa's solitary win, although former champions Bafana Bafana are one of two World Cup qualifiers from the region.

So how have Egypt - whose players have physiques which are nowhere near as powerful as many West Africans - won seven Nations Cups, three more than anyone else?

"Egyptians compete successfully because they're doing something different," Noakes explains.

He believes they compensate for their lighter frames with superior ball skills, much as players like Lionel Messi, Xavi and Steven Pienaar, to given an African example, are doing.

But interestingly, despite the Nations Cup victories, an Egyptian player has won just one Caf best player title and two for the BBC (the latter differing in that it is voted for by fans rather than national coaches).

"I don't know if I'm surprised by this," the former Aston Villa, Coventry City and Deportivo La Coruna star told the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track. "Nearly all Egyptians play at home so the media and public elsewhere can seldom watch them."

With impressive facilities and salaries, many Pharaohs, even those as talented as Mohamed Aboutreika, show little willingness to go abroad.

Meanwhile, other nations simply cannot place their players overseas as easily as West Africa, where success for national sides offers opportunities for individuals and lures agents aplenty.

"In Kenya, we only have one Fifa-approved agent and right now he's relocated to Australia," says football official Hussein Swaleh. "We know very few agents - one in France, one in Sweden and one in Qatar - and have none in England because no one's interested in Kenya."

That's because, despite MacDonald Mariga (Inter) and Dennis Oliech (Auxerre) contesting the Uefa Champions League, Kenya's Fifa ranking is below the UK's work permit threshold of 70th place

This makes it hard for an African from such a country, and over 70% of African nations fall outside this stipulation, to win a contract with a top European side, meaning the cycle of failure goes on - while West Africa is awash with both agents and academies.

Agreeing that West Africans are far stronger physically, Hadji believes it's not the only area where the region boasts an advantage.

"Mentally, West Africans are stronger than us and I'm still unsure why North Africans don't have as much hunger or give up quicker than others," he says. "Our skill levels are the same but it's mentality that makes the difference."

There's no doubting the mental fortitude of some West Africans.

Ghana's Sammy Kuffuor, who won the BBC award in 2001, is a good example of a player who maximised his innate skills to reach the top, eventually winning several German titles and a Champions League with Bayern Munich.

"When I joined Bayern (aged 17), I faced a very big challenge as there were five or so German internationals in my position," he tells the BBC. "So I had to get psyched in my mind to reach the top and, as a young boy from Africa, needed to give 150% to get to the first team.

"But I always knew I would make it as I was so determined."

And maybe that determination also came from seeing a fellow Ghanaian like Abedi Pele shining on the world stage.

"The goal of many young children is to be like their country's great heroes," says Noakes.

"And if they've already seen it happen, that makes a massive difference and it is far likelier that it will also happen for them."
In 1998, Morocco's Mustapha Hadji won both - and he is, remarkably, the only non-West African to have won the Caf title in 21 years.
