CHAPTER FIVE
THE SHADOW

Since their reunion, Gori had refused to give Tiwa a breathing space, he had a copy of her timetable, they were practically a leave-in couple. Tiwa's mother, Mrs. Eyitope had summoned her to her office one hot afternoon.

"Tope, are you seeing a guy?" Miss. Eyiwunmi asked immediately Tiwa took her seat. She was her mothers replica, from beauty to plumpy stature.
"Mum, is this why you called me? She questioned staring at her mother.
" Will you answer my question, young lady!" Her mother snapped.
"Yes, I have a boyfriend." She said hiding her face. She knew her mother, the great Margret Thatcher.
"At your age? Just hear yourself!"
"Mum, I'm above eighteen." She said in a whisper.
"Ki lo so?" Miss Eyiwunmi asked, Tiwa squeezed her beautiful face .
"So because you are above eighteen, you can sleep with everyone?"
"Sleep with everyone ke?" She was shocked, she knew her mother perfectly well. The thirty-nine year old woman could exaggerate things too well. She frowned, her mother was making her look like some cheap slut.
"You want to tell me you are a virgin?" Her mother searched through her face probably seeking for the answer.
"Mum, why am I here?" She asked. "See, I've EDU 234 o... Its Prof Makun's course o."
"Gori called me and asked me to warn you about the guy you are seeing." Tiwa was confused, she knew Gori was always avoiding her mother, how could he call her to report her? She thought they had settled their difference.
"You don't know Gori?" Miss Eyiwunmi gave her an askance look.
"I ...know..."
"The VC!" Her mum cut in. She was relieved, she thought it was her Gori.
"Mum, what is your relationship with that man again?" She gave her a suspicious look squeezing her lips to the same side.
"He is the VC now, he came here personally to warn me. He said the guy is a cultist. I heard he killed Ken, Bileri and Dozie. I hope it is not true sha." Her mother said.
"Don't mind anyone mum, my boyfriend is caring and he cannot hurt a fly." She defended.
"Is he taking care of you?" Miss Eyiwunmi asked.
"Mum, don't you see me." She stood up and did a three sixty turn for her mother. "See my skin, see my weave. See my phone now."
"Omo, you don hit jackpot o."
"How are your alhajis." Tiwatope spilled her mother's most dreaded question.
"Tiwa, I told you I'm a changed person. I want to lay a good example for you." She stared into her only child's eyes, she knew she had failed as a mother.
"Mum, take care." Tiwa stood up.
"When will you come home?"
"You always want me far from you." Tiwa replied as she stopped in her track. She reminisced on how her mother had sent her to the boarding house right from her primary school till now. It gave her enough room for all her escapades. Her mother was speechless.
"Bye." She said and walked away.
********************************************************
"Where are you coming from." Gori questioned immediately she stepped into the room.
"Mum called to see her." She said dropping off her blazer.
"Ugh... What for? Omo mummy." He asked with arms akimbo.
"She said the VC told her to warn me to stop me from seeing you. Seriously, I'm getting worried."
"The VC! See this yeye man!" He smiled wearing his trousers.
"Where are you going to?"
"To see the VC."
"Why? Is it because of what I said? Please, don't put my mum into trouble." She pleaded. Gori chuckled, he undressed immediately and walked to her.
"Are you leaving me?"
"Why? Not even my mum can stop me. I'm not leaving you." She blew him a kiss.
********************************************************
The following morning.
Daniel and Gori were in the living room playing PS, Dan was beating Gori who was seriously vexed, Tiwa and Kay had gone to school.
"Abeg, I no play again." He said as he dropped the pad.
"You no say I b boss na." Dan replied mockingly. Gori filled a glass cup with McDowell's. He gulped little and placed the cup on the stool.
"Dan, how far with Kay.?" He asked.
"She dey now. She just dey disturb me. She bin wan dey crash for here like Tiwa o." He complained.
"Shey you like the babe reach DAT level ni?" He asked ignoring his complain.
"Omo, I don dey love her o. D babe love me gidi o, as I dey so, I fit marry her sef."
"Ugh... I no even like that babe."
"Why?"
"Nothing o."
"You better like her. You know say I like your babe, n moreso, na your babe's friend."
"OK o."
"How far about the Green."
"I've started with their children now. I mean their favourite kids. Two gone, five more!"
"Tuale!" He gestured raising his two hands.
"I'm still in the dark.... I want to know their leader.."
"Ask Oluwo now."
"The man sef dey do anyhow. Power must to change hands." They laughed as they drank.
********* ************* ************ **********
Later in the Night.
Gori was cladded in a white shirt and black pants, he knocked on the VC's door but opened before the old man could say a word.
"What are you doing here by this time?" The old man asked trying to zip up his trousers, the woman he was having a romp with was adjusting her blouse too. It was such an embarrassing scene.
"I think it is high time I changed this secretary." The VC complained.
"Why are you always like this? You're always having sex even at your age. Don't you get tired at all?."
"Why are you here?" The VC asked as he headed towards his seat. Gori was already staring at the VC's mistress, he never mind doing a married woman after all. The woman was plump and got a nice behind. He knew her face would be as beautiful as her behind.
"Can I have her?" He said loosening his belt.
"Gori, she is not a young lady o."
" Do I care? I wanna feel that behind! "He said as he spank the woman's behind.
" she's a ... A... Staff! A security staff."the woman who had her back against them was already shivering..
"So old man, you don dey do staff again! You no dey get shame!" He asked. "Look here, young woman."

Tradition...

'is it my fault that Dike has refused to marry a seventh wife? Why are you putting the whole blame on me now Igwe?' Lolo questioned as she sat up on the bed, her back to the board.

'you're his mother. And you've always been close to him. Whatever decision he takes, you should always be beside him, advicing him to make the right choices Lolo. I dont know what its going to take of you, but i'll rather advice you speak to Dike. I will not tolerate him not showing up on the marriage day. I'm warning you Lolo' The Igwe said harshly.

'so what if i dont speak to him? Whats your duty as his father?' She retorted.

'i have told you all i have to say Lolo. If you dont do this, then its your concern, i've said my own'

'Igwe, i dont even know what to say to you, i dont! Is it my fault that your son doesnt listen to you? If you as a father cant speak to your son and get him to listen, how then is it my problem? Why do you like placing your failures as my head, eh?'

Igwe stared at the Lolo, then shook his head 'you have no shame Ngozi, just look at the way you speak to your husband'

'and the only reason i'm sitted here listening to all the rubbish you have to say is because you're the Igwe and i'm only according you the respect deserved by an Igwe, not as a husband' Lolo said with a loud hiss.

'sometimes i wonder what i've ever done to you Lolo, why do you disrespect me in this manner?'

Lolo just rolled her eyes.

'everyone knows that of all my wives, you're my favourite. We've been together for a very long time. I married you when i was fourteen years old Lolo and now i'm fifty. We've been together for twenty six years Ngozi, why dont you still understand me till now? I give you everything you've ever requested from me. I shower you with love that your co-wives are envious of. But when it comes to respect, i recieve more respect from the other women than i recieve from the woman i love the most. Isnt this wickedness?'

'you're just trying to make me feel guilty Igwe'

'this is not me trying to make you feel guilty. Its me trying to make you understand that you keep on hurting me everytime'

She kept mute.

'i know sometimes, i try to place the responsibility of Dike on you. But you should try to understand that as the Igwe, i have so many things on my hands too. I have this community to run. I have the seven clans under my community to run as well. Sometimes, i just need little assistance from you as well'

'i have heard'

'this is not a matter of "i have heard" Ngozi. This is a matter of...'

'i said i have heard now Igwe!' She said slapping her palms on her thighs impatiently 'would you just let me sleep now?! I would be at Dike's office tomorrow morning. Goodnight please' And with that, she laid on her bed and faced the opposite direction.

***

Dike hadnt been expecting his mother at his office so early in the morning. He had just resumed work and was clearing his desk when he had several cars trooping into the company.

So he had peeped from his window, and he had seen the Queen's entourage, five cars as usual.

He watched his mother stepped down from the dark Landrover looking elegant and sparkling as usual, emitting royalty and wealthiness.

He wondered what she was here for.

He just sat back waiting for her. In less than five minutes, his intercom rang. It was his secretary calling to inform his his mother was waiting to see him 'let her in' he said simply.

And in another three minutes, his mother was in his office.

'good morning mum' he said going for an embrace.

'good morning my darling, how are you today?' She took a seat.

'i'm doing great mum. You look so beautiful this morning'

'thanks' She looked at herself proudly 'and you look dashing'

'thanks. How was the journey down here?'

'oh it was great. We were actually held by traffic. We were supposed to have been here ealier than this'

'if you had been here earlier than this then you wouldnt have met me here for i'm just resuming'

'you work too hard for a boss my son'

'if i have to succeed with my business, then i'll have to work harder' He shrugged.

'and if i may ask, what happens to all of this when you become king? I tell you my son, handling the community is a task on its own, and then when you couple it with this big empire you're building? I'm sorry son but in no time, you'll have to give up on this business, just very soon'

His countenance changed 'that never happening mother'

His mother laughed 'thats happening already dear. You'll be king. Very soon'

It was his turn to laugh now 'you have such high dreams mum'

'and thats because i trust my son would make the right decision'

'yeah. I'm actually making the right decision as it is. Because i'm never going to be king'

She frowned 'Dike, you cant mean that, do you?'

'dont you trust me to make the right decisions anymore mother?'

'Dike!'

He just laughed. He was never going to rule Umuzulu, that was his decision.

CHAPTER THREE....Tradition.
'my son is proving stubborn about this whole marriage thing' Lolo said 'but dont worry my friend, i'm sure he'll come around'

Mrs Freda Ibe smiled 'i dont blame him. He never wanted to be Igwe right from time'

'he doesnt want it but he has no choice. As for me, i cannot sit and watch someone else take what belongs to my son. He wants Ikemba to take over but over my dead body! I married the Igwe first and i bore him a son first, someone else cannot come and claim whats not his. As his mother, i refuse to that'

'you've just said it all my friend. Dike is the crownprince of Umuzulu and he's a very intelligent man. There's no doubt that the current Igwe would be leaving this community in good hands by the time he's gone'

'i just thank God for giving a wonderful son like Dike. Though he could be stubborn sometimes..really stubborn'

'i understand'

'what about Mia?'

'Mia's fine. You didnt ask about Shivani'

'oh! I forgot. How's she?'

'she's fine as well'

'has she consented to the marriage proposal?'

'Shivani has no choice. She does whatever i ask of her'

'then she must be very loyal'

'extremely loyal. Thats why i dont joke with her in all ramifications...she's the apple of my eyes'

'your daughters must be well-trained then. I especially like Mia, though i havent met Shivani yet. But when Igwe wanted one of Ibe's daughters to be Dike's last wife, i was thinking Mia would be the one'

Mrs Freda shifted uncomfortably 'i chose Shivani because i knew she would be a better candidate for Dike. Shivani is a very good and well-mannered girl. Mia's...Mia's, just...she's not very well-cultured as you all think her to be. I'm sure Dike wont be able to tolerate her extremely bad character'

'oh! But Mia doesnt strike me as that kind of girl. I see her as a very respectful child'

'it is the rat that lives inside the house that knows the condition of everything in the kitchen Lolo. You wont be able to tolerate Mia's behaviour Lolo. I wont lie about my daughter's behavior will i? I wont want to paint my own daughter black, will i? Infact, i'm only telling you this because you're my closest friend. I wont disclose this to outsiders'

'i completely understand you. I think from henceforth, i'll start snubbing Mia kind of. She must not be a very good girl from what you're telling me'

'exactly my friend. The wise men say too much play causes insults. Dont pay attention to Mia anymore, she's just a useless child'

'i've heard you dear'

Freda smiled proudly. It wasnt as if she hated Mia or anything, but she believed Shivani deserved better.
She had grown up in abject poverty. A home where they could barely feed twice a day.
And then she had married a man who was much more poorer than they even were. If only she had known better, she would never have married him. But she had loved him and had thought love was everything.

She worked harder and even became thinner than she had been before marrying him. That was when the hatred for him began. She picked up quarels at every little thing, and was always ready to remind him what a disgrace to manhood he was that he couldnt provide for himself and his wife.

It took three years after marriage before Shivani came. Shivani's birth changed everything, or so she believed. That was when her secret affair with the Igwe had begun.

She had had little crying Shivani strapped to her back, walking along the road with a basket full of vegetables on her head. With little Shivani crying, all she could plead for was for her to get home quickly so she could breastfeed her.

That was when the Igwe's entourage passed. He has been filled with pity and sympathy for her. He had given her some money that day and told her to come see him at the palace the next day.

She had gone and the rest they said was history. Their secret affair started.

And nobody knew about it.

Even till now, they still met once in a while.

To her, if Shivani hadnt been crying, Igwe wouldnt have stopped and besides, another reason she would never let Mia marry Dike, was because she wasnt sure of Mia's paternity. It was 50-50. It could have been Chukwuka, her late husband, it could have been Igwe. She wasnt entirely sure.

Mia could be Dike's half-sister. She didnt know but she wasnt ready to take such risks.

'.....the jewelry was a...'

'pardon?' she cut in immediately. She hadnt been paying attention to what the Lolo had been saying.

'i was saying that i lost a particular necklace this month. Though i only discovered it got missing yesterday, i dont know when it got missing exactly. The necklace's diamond. One of my favourites'

She shifted again uncomfortable. She remembered the necklace vividly and she was the one who had taken it 'i'm very sorry dear. I'm sure you'll get a new one soon'

'i'll let Igwe handle that' The Lolo smiled.

Freda just rolled her eyes.

BiafraBushBoy:
It was a period of terrible thinking. I knew I had to get the money back before Madam Grace asks about the money. There was one option and path way I needed to take and it was the man that got me disvirgined from my behind. It was a long drive that day to Obalende as I had to use the public transport. The hold up was much especially through the Third Mainland bridge. I finally got to my destination and headed straight for the house number.

“Is Oga around?” I ask the mallam I saw at the gate

“Which Oga” He asked back with his hausa accent

“How many Oga dey get for this house? Or you sef don turn Oga?” I asked back with a mean face.

“Whalai, you no go enter this house this evening” He said as he was about to shut the gate and I held on to the gate and it was almost getting to a scuffle before the man appeared from top of the house

“What is happening there?” He queried

“He wan enter house oga, but him no wan talk who him wan come see” The Mallam replied. I gently sneaked my head through the gate with the sole purpose of making myself visible to him.

“Hey!” He exclaimed

“Come inside” He said as he gave the sign direction to come inside

“Mtcheewww” I hissed at the Mallam at the gate who kept a mean face as I entered. I gently navigated my way to the parlor of the house where I found him sitting down with a gown and his legs crossed.

“Good afternoon Sir” I greeted as I approached him. With a smile on his face, he gave me a sign to come closer. I was no longer scared of what could happen because he had already penetrated me before this time. I came closer to him and he rubbed my back and made me sit on his laps

“Wow! You are very heavy” He screamed joking

“How are you love?” He asked with a voice he tried to make romantic

“Fine!” I responded as feminine as possible.

“I never saw you again, so I thought you didn’t want me again” He said as he kept on rubbing my laps.

“I always wanted you dear” I said with smile on my face. He smiled so hard that he now asked me why I actually came to the house.

“I am in a little problem, so I needed a little help from you” I responded with a low and slow voice. He looked at me and smiled deeply before he cleared his throat and said to me

“So let us assume you never had any problem before, so I wouldn’t have had the chance to taste how sweet you are again?” He asked

“I would have still come back sir: I said. He smiled once again.

“I will still give you, but you should know that I have missed you a lot” He said. He immediately dipped his hand into my trousers and caught hold of my rod. The intensity of the romance was so intense that I pictured myself with a very hot looking lady. It wasn’t long before he led me along to his inner chamber, where he placed me gently on the bed and pulled off. I hurriedly removed my wears as I was already ready for action. He brought out his oil that was meant for lubrication and applied it to my hole with passion as I amazed my little stick between my legs. Few minutes later I felt a massive element pierce through my back side. The pain was so sharp but not as much as it was the first time he entered inside of me. I screamed and moaned in pains while he was enjoying his roller-coaster ride. I endured and within few minutes he was moaning in excitement as he released some things right on my back. I quickly rushed to the bathroom where I immediately poured some water into the bath tube and sat inside with my bare body inside the water.

The pain was intense but I had to brace up and head back into the room where I met with him.

“I don’t even know your name sir” I asked surprised

“Call me Henry” He responded

We kissed a bit and he headed straight to his drawer where he brought out some money bundles. He quickly disengaged about three of the bundle and handed it over to me. It was a bundle of one thousand Naira notes and I was confident that it exceeded my expectation.

“When you need me babe, you can always come” He said to me as I hugged him and arranged myself before leaving his compound. I had suffered to get this money and someone else will also suffer to be a partaker of it.

“Hello Babe” I said into my phone immediately Jenny picked up

“I will be hosting a party tomorrow at my house, can you come around?”

“They won’t allow me leave home” She replied

“Just tell them that you will be going for a church meeting, and you can just branch around” I suggested to her

She immediately bought the idea and we made the plans like it was supposed to happen. The next day I arranged the house in a typical party style. I had called a lot of peeps whom I knew to turn up for the party. The party was supposed to commence by 2pm, but by 1pm the house was already getting crowded with lots of babe and guys all over. It was a drinking and dancing galore as everyone had fun. I noticed I wasn’t really interested in all the people that came around.

It was almost 3 and Jenny was still nowhere to be found. I tried her line and it wasn’t connecting. 4pm and yet she wasn’t still seen within the vicinity. It was almost getting around some minutes past 5 when she came strolling into the compound. I quickly left everything and rushed to hug her.

We interacted a bit before I brought her into the crowded house. We managed to by-pass the crowd of happy people who were having fun. I took her to my room where we interacted a bit before I started pushing advances.

“I am seeing my flow baby” She dropped the bombshell that almost made me mad

“So I can’t have any intimate thing with you” She added

I had already applied the lotion that Madam Grace gave to me and there was no turning back not to have sex with her. It was a deed that needed to be done.

“What should I do now?” I thought to myself.

CHAPTER TWO.
'another one added to the ones you already have?' Martins asked in surprise as he and his friend played the game of chess.

'its the tradition'

'whats fucking tradition is that? After six wives?! This is fucking shii mehn. I dont expect you to agree to that shii' Martins shook his head.

'i have no plans of agreeing to it' Dike said 'its not happening. I married the first girl at age 11, and the second at age 13. And thats how i've been marrying up until now and my father is trying to force another into my home, its not happening, i swear down' Dike hissed.

'how many wives has your father?'

'seven'

'with your mother being the?'

'first'

'that means its customary as a king-to-be in your village that you marry seven wives even before you assume the throne?'

'and thats what i'm saying that i have no interest in Igweship. I want it passed to Kachi, my younger brother who's currently abroad studying medicine. I do not want to be king. Not when i'm managing a huge empire. I can never forfeit that for anything in the world nah. Its not making sense at all'

'hmm' Martins looked ahead to see Adanna approaching them with a tray and a beautiful smile plastered on her face.

He marvelled of her beauty. She was the first wife of Dike, very beautiful with a nice shape. And she was the kindest amongst them.

'hey Ada!' he said with a smile when she got to them 'whats up?'

'i'm fine Martins' She dropped the tray containing two plates of steaming peppersoup in their front 'just felt you two might need this when chilaxing, right Dike?'

Dike shot her a look that had her nonsmiling immediately 'get out of here!' Dike barked 'now!'

She quickly turned to leave when he called her back. She turned.

'take this with you' he pointed at the tray. She hesitated for a while 'now!'

She scurried back to the table, picked up the tray and walked away with sadness on her face.

'that was bad Dike' Martins said to his friend 'you had no right to shout at her that way. She was only trying to be nice'

'nice my foot! Thats how they all try to be nice. Nice idiots! You cant begin to imagine how much i hate them all'

'them all, Dora inclusive?' he asked referring to the fourth wife of Dike.

'Dora's the only reasonable person amongst them. She knows what she wants. And she didnt marry me because she's as greedy as them all. She married me because she was forced to. And i'm aware that she's secretly dating someone else and i fully give my consent to it! Thats why she's different'

'your life is complicated my friend. I'm just wondering how you're going to cope later on when you decide to finally be with that whom you consider the one'

'when that time comes, i assure you, things would take a different turn'

'i just hope so'

***
Dora watched as her husband pursed his lips. She knew something was bothering him. She knew Dike that much.

Even as he ate his breakfast that morning, she knew he was absent-minded. Of all his wives, she was the closest to him so she knew.

And she also knew that she was the only one whom he trusted with the running of the house. And she was eternally grateful that he didnt object to her relationship with Frank, her boyfriend.

Dike was a nice man. Though sometimes she felt he deserved better. He wasnt happy. He had once opened up to her that seeing his other wives move around the house was a sight of disgust to him. And that someday sometime, he was going to have to do something very drastic. And she knew what he was capable of.

Dike was a very fine man. He was chocolate skinned with broad shoulders, nice abs. Pink lips, pointed nose, grey eyes, a wonderful height, an aura that permeated royalty... What could she describe him with? Infact, she had never seen anyone as handsome as he was. And he was no womanizer.

There was a time she loved him. Even till now, she still felt something for him. But when she realised that there was no hope for him to love her the same way, she decided to look elsewhere. But that didnt mean she still didnt feel something for him somewhere in her heart.

'Dike, whats the problem?'

He looked up from his breakfast 'did you say something?'

'yes i did dear husband' She said with sarcasm 'i asked what the problem is'

'what problem?'

'are you seriously asking me that question? Eh Dike? We both know that something's bothering you. Something's eating you up that i've been sitting with you since you started having breakfast and you're not ready to strike a conversation!'

'i'm not just in the mood to talk Dora' She loved the way her name rolled off his lips. More like Doraaa.

'seriously now Dike, when did you start hiding things from me?'

'i'm not hiding anything from you Dora'

She looked at him suspiciously. Could he be seeing someone else? Jealousy tugged at her heart. Dike couldnt love someone else. She still loved him with all her heart. And she was ready to admit it to him.

Not minding Frank.

Indeed, there was a bounty on their heads; and because of that, they were always on the run. But this would be over soon, they knew. After today, everything would be in the past. But the day seemed oblivious of dusk, so they would run for the last time today. They were in the country’s most wanted lists’ and half a million naira was ready for anyone who was able to nab any one of them, a million if the two were caught. Their pictures filled the columns of every national newspaper, their names were mentioned in every news on the televisions and in the radios. They had become the most exciting topic since the Ebola outbreak that ravaged the country a year earlier. Even cartoonists had made jokes about their escapes and the enthusiasms of the citizens in the determination to apprehend them and receive the reward. Many gamblers of the streets had even speculated on the possibility of their apprehension. They were the talks of the town; you could see most people at the newspaper stands arguing heatedly about the truth behind their escape. Some other people had even claimed that they were intentionally freed.

But amidst this national excitement, some of the masses had set up a fan club in honour of the escapees. They called themselves TBF—The Black Followers. These ‘Followers’, however, had campaigned for the escapees’ full liberation, but the law didn’t always listen to the voice of the people when she was in the hunt for hardened criminals. Law-keepers would do everything in their capacity to make sure that these criminals return behind bars. And the public tried to assist in the hunt only because there was money involved.

Although it had been almost a year since their escape, the rave and passion over their apprehension had not waned. People still imagined themselves catching the fugitives and collecting the reward. But how and where to catch them, none of the seekers knew; there was no plan, no deduction whatsoever, even after knowing how clever their prey was.

It was all about the money of course, Junior knew. He knew that if money had not been involved the people would not have enjoined the lawmen in the hunt for them. Someone among the crowd had recognized one of them and had immediated shouted out the name that had always remained on the tip of everyone’s tongue; and about half a dozen men and women had come running after the trio. Junior knew what would happen if they were caught again. So he, his father, and his pregnant wife, had made an instant bolt.

Thankfully, they ran into a quiet street. Junior knew that he and his father would have disappeared from the scene of pursuit on the instant if his heavily pregnant woman had not been with them. Taking her along with them had been a bad decision in the first place; but his stubborn wife had insisted on going with them. Now she was slowing them down. If they were caught now, they would have no one to blame but themselves. But even with her pregnancy, the lady still carried herself remarkably.

They were still on the run when Junior’s wife suddenly stopped.

“Lola, what happened?” Junior asked his wife.

Instead of answering, Lola began to groan. Her face was turning pale and her eyes were tightly shut.

“What is it? Are you tired?” Junior asked with deep concern.

With effort, Lola replied, “The baby is on its way.”

What!” Junior lamented, “Here? Why would it come now? It shouldn’t be here.” He was beginning to panic, "Does the baby want us to get caught?”

Junior’s father put his hand on his son’s shoulder and said, "Calm down, son. Everything will be all right, trust me.” He turned to Lola and said, “But it’s not due in two weeks, isn’t that what you told us?”

‘It’s early.” Lola replied. Then she said loudly, “For Christ’s sake! The baby is coming! Do you think I’m joking about my own childbirth?”

Junior was already sweating, “We’ll have to get her to a hospital.” He said.

“Hospital is a bad idea. We’d easily be caught there. I won’t make the same mistake twice.” He paused and said, "We’ll have to find a safe place for her. Junior, support your wife, and follow me.”

The husband put his wife’s right arm across his shoulder, then he put his own left hand behind her waist and they both wobbled after the older man. Junior trusted his father with his life; the man was his hero. He knew there was no better father in the world. This man walking before them had taught him everything he knew about life. He had never, in any day, remembered seeing his father panic in any situation. His father was the calmest person he had ever known. He used his brain more than he used his body. Junior knew he could never match his father’s calm personality.

Junior tried to keep his voice calm as he asked his wife, “The waters have broken?”

"It broke when that man screamed at us at the junction.”

“Oh, my goodness!” he broke his calmness, "Did you feel pains then?”

“The pains came as soon as the waters broke.” Lola clenched her teeth as she felt another stab of pain all within her. “Oh, my God! This pain is getting unbearable.”

"Everything will be all right, Lola, I promise you.” Her husband’s father said, smiling.

To keep conversation going, Junior asked, "You mean you still kept running even with the pains?”

“I couldn’t stand there to allow them catch us. I stopped when the pains suddenly became worse. I couldn’t hide it anymore.”

"How are you feeling now?”

“I’m not feeling any better, sweetheart.”

She was looking weaker and Junior was becoming more alarmed. He couldn’t bear to lose his wife. He couldn’t bear to lose Lola; she was his life, his saviour, the lintel of his soul. He would have probably remained locked up now if not for Lola. He owed her his life, even his father owed her. He knew his father knew that. He also knew his father would do everything he could to make sure Lola remained with them. Thunder must definitely not strike twice!

They found a quiet bungalow. And within seconds, Junior’s father had opened the door of the house. They all went inside, shut the door firmly behind them and laid Lola on the floor, resting her head on the pillow taken from the cushion. Junior fervently prayed that they would be through before the occupant of the house returned. They could be caught here if they were not careful. Then his wife said something that scared him.

“I’m too tired to give birth to this child. I cannot do it. I feel sleepy, please let me sleep.”

“Oh, no! you can’t sleep, my love. You can’t sleep. Please don’t sleep.”

Then just that moment, a sound came from the entrance; someone was at the door. Junior’s father placed a finger on his lips, signaling the couple to keep quiet. He went to the window beside the door and pulled the curtain. There, he saw a young girl of about sixteen years old. The girl was turning the knob and wondering why the door was not opening. Junior’s father quickly went to the door and unlocked it.

“Hello, Miss—” he said, smiling at the girl.

The young lady looked at him with a puzzled expression, "Who are you?”

“Er—uh—I’m a guest. We’re here to see your parents.” He gave another charming smile.

The girl walked in and found two other strangers; the pregnant one was evidently in labour.

“Who are you people?” the puzzled girl asked, “What do you want in my house?”

Before anyone could reply her. Her eyes lit up with surprise as she said, “You’re the ones those people I encountered on the way were looking for, right?”

"That’s true,” Junior’s father answered, “We escaped from them. Those people are ritualists. They kidnapped us with the intention of selling our body parts to potential customers. We’re lucky to have escaped.”

“My God!” the girl had swallowed the lie whole, “That’s horrible.”

“If we hadn’t escaped, maybe they’d have advertised our skulls on OLX by now.”

She pointed at Lola, “What’s wrong with her?”

“She’s having a baby.”

“You should take her to a hospital.”

“The hospital is too far away. We have to bring the child to the world by ourselves.”

She looked from father to son and asked, "Does either one of you know how to bring a baby?”

Junior shook his head but his father said, “We’ll try.”

“I’ll help you to do that.” The girl said grimly.

“Have you done it before?”

She shook her head, “No, but I’ve seen people do it a couple of times. I’ve watched the births of several children. This is a woman’s job.”

“What’s your name, girl?”

“Amanda.”

“Can you do it, Amanda?"

“Yes, I can. I’m a practising nurse.” She knew what she had to do. She must first make the woman in labour feel comfortable. After that, she’d find out how close the baby was; then make necessary preparations.

She approached the woman on the floor and asked, “How are you feeling, madam?”

“I feel cold.” Lola answered weakly.

Amanda felt Lola’s forehead; the pregnant woman was sweating and running high temperature. She knew the symptom; the pregnant woman was working up fever, a condition not good for the baby. Lola knelt close to her and loosened all the buttons of her dress. As she did so she asked the men to wind up the curtains of all the windows.

She felt the outline of Lola’s belly. She felt the shape of the unborn child as she pressed deeper. She found one end of the body, just beneath Lola’s navel; but she could not locate the other end of the body on the belly.

“It’s on its way out,” Amanda said excitedly. “I can feel its bottom now. Kindly push!”

Lola’s face tightened with strain as she began to bear down, pushing the infant out of her womb. Junior could notice that the effort was costing her a whole lot, using up her last reserves of energy; and he wished desperately that he could bear down for her. Besides, he was the one who put the baby there in the first place, there should be something he could do to assist her. He wished to take the strain on himself, to give her some relief. At last the pain seemed to ease, and Junior breathed again.

“Push!”

Lola raised herself on her elbows and spread her legs. Kneeling between her legs, Amanda could see that the birth opening was beginning to dilate.

"Push!” she urged her again.

Lola tensed again and fresh beads of sweat rested on her contorted face. Amanda watched the opening widen again, and this time she could see the damp black hair of the baby’s head pushing through. Lola began to breathe in gasps as she tried to push once more. The opening stretched wider—incredibly wide—and then a large portion of the head began to come through, face-down. Soon Amanda saw the ears flat against the side of the baby’s head, then the folded skin of the neck appeared.

“The head and the neck are out.” She could not help saying.

Lola heard her and gave a brief smile, then she began to strain again.

Amanda leaned forward between her thighs and supported the tiny head of the baby with her left hand as the shoulders came out, first one then the other. And the rest of the body came out in a rush, and Amanda supported the baby’s hips with her hand as the tiny legs slipped into the cold world.

Lola’s opening immediately started to contract around the cord that came from the baby’s navel. Amanda lifted the child and scrutinized it curiously and anxiously. There was a lot of blood, and at first she feared something was terribly wrong; but on closer examination she could see no injury. She looked between its tiny thighs. It was a boy.

The baby opened its mouth and cried.

As Junior stared at the bundle of joy placed in his arms, he wondered what was going to become of the child when he grew up. Was the baby going to become a great man like his grandfather? Maybe he was, but in another way. A part of him questioned whether they had done the right thing by bringing this child to this world. Although still small and apparently bald, save for a few fringe of hair on its scalp, the baby was looking considerably healthy. Junior was sure the child would grow into a very goodlooking young man, for he was goodlooking himself, and even the baby’s grandfather was not looking bad. In a week’s time, this infant would be different; but for Junior and his father, a week was a long time for a baby to develop; but after the week, the baby would be bigger, and his eyes would open wider. Then the child would no longer be oblivious of the world around him as it is now; a loud noise would make him jump and a lullaby would soothe him to sleep. Junior understood babies even more than most mothers.

He looked at the baby’s mother, Lola was smiling at him. She was very tired, he knew, but she was going to be fine. Their eyes met, communicating devotion and affection for each other, and they both smiled. What an extraordinary woman, Junior thought, I’m the luckiest man on this earth.

“The child needs to be fed,” Amanda said as she collected the baby from its father and gave its mother.

Junior sat in a chair beside his father, smiling at the old man. They had done it. The worst was over and the baby was good. He felt proud.

Lola moved the baby close to her bre*st. His tiny mouth found her swollen n*pple and he stopped crying and began to suck. Soon, the baby fell asleep and Amanda placed him in one of the cushions.

Then suddenly, Lola’s muscles contracted, her pupils were dilated and she gave a brief scream as the placenta slid out of her. She fell asleep afterwards.

A few minutes later, Junior’s father stood up, looked his son in the eyes and said, “It’s time.”

Junior nodded in understanding, Amanda had gone out to wash herself in the backyard. He dipped his hand into his pocket, brought out a mobile phone, inserted a new SIM card and dialled a number he’d memorised. He looked at his father as the call rang.

When the call was picked at the other end, he said to the receiver, “Someone wants to speak with you.”

Having said that, Junior gave the phone to his father. He knew how important the call was to the older man, and also to the person at the other end of the line. It was something that needed to be done—especially now.

He knew his father to always smile in this kind of situation. His father was a man capable of being convulsed with laughter even with a gun pointed to his head. He wasn’t sure what the older man’s capacity for weird humour said about him, for his father was also one of the most mysterious people alive.

But his father wasn’t smiling when he said to the person at the other end of the line:

“You have a grandson.”

CHAPTER 5 Part 3

The three cars drove into the compound one after the other raising heaps of dust behind. The back door of the first car opened and Stainless stepped out with his phone to his ears.

'We just got there boss,' he said as he walked towards the main building with a cigarette in his mouth.

'Are you sure it's safer than where you were before?'

'Yes, even Don does not know this place.' Stainless replied.

'Talking about Don, you have to send some boys to watch the place and tell him when it is safe to leave his hiding spot.' Rex said.

'Okay boss, I'll tell Stone right away.'

'Good, I'll be leaving here as early as 5am today and would also require you to provide transport arrangement to your location for me. Get to work as quick as possible.'

'That's nothing much, it's done already.'

'That other guy who promised to work with you for money and to get back his parents, don't start anything with him yet. Also make sure he doesn't find out that his parents have been taken out by Tarasha already. I will tell you what to do with him when I get there,' Rex said slowly in a concluding tone.

'Alright boss.'

'Now, send men immediately to watch for Don or...' Rex stopped abruptly, he seemed to have gotten a new idea. 'This is what you should do; order your men to take note of the number of police officers there, attack them if they're a number you can attack and rescue Don. If they are more than you can beat, let them report and you get back to me as soon as possible.'

_________

'We can't all just leave this place now,' Inspector Sandra who led the team said. 'In fact, I don't think any of us should go in, this man might have just called to pull us into a trap.' she added, looking suspiciously towards the security man.

'I swear, the bomb is at the front of the library and it was reading, there'll be about five minutes left now.' the security man defended himself with a shaky voice, his hand raised high as one of the officers had his gun tip to his back.

'Lead us in,' Inspector Sandra finally said, leaving the back of the car to come and stand behind the security man. She pointed her gun at him as she directed him towards their gate. She signalled for three of her men to follow her and for other three to stay in front of the library gate.

Three men stood at different directions of the library gate while four people including Inspector Sandra went in, the remaining one officer was left at the car in front of the warehouse gate where he stood at alert with his gun pointed towards the library gate. The three men standing outside the Library gate spaced themselves and pointed their guns towards the gate.

Just as Inspector Sandra and the rest three entered into the gate with the security man, the bulbs at the gate of the warehouse went off, adding more darkness to the place which was already made dark with the lights at the library gate off. The men turned their guns towards the gate and shot sporadically but they didn't see anyone or anything else move. Inspector Sandra rushed back outside immediately with the three she entered with.

'What's that?' Inspector Sandra asked charging carefully towards the gate with her long gun pointed.

'The lights went off,' one of the men standing outside replied her as both of them moved slowly towards the widely opened gate with their guns readied.

'But how can that be? We met no one inside,' Inspector Sandra sounded confused. 'Do the gates have the same control for the lights?' she asked, looking towards the Security man who was standing outside the Library gate.

'We have less than five minutes to stop the Bomb,' the security man answered, totally unconcerned about her own question.

'We don't have any of the anti-bomb squad members here, we've called for reinforcement from the office, we can only hope they answer fast.' she replied him. Taking out a torch light from her pocket to point towards the now dark widely opened gate.

'But we're all going to die if that bomb goes off,' the Security man implied in a fearful tone.

'We're not all going to die,' Inspector Sandra replied in a confident tone. 'The person who placed the bomb is still around and would not ignite it now.'

With the tiny torch between her lips, she marched slowly into the warehouse compound again, two of her men following while the rest stood at alert outside the facility.

She turned her head sideways as she walked past the opened arm of the gate. As she attempted to turn to check behind the opened arm, a strong hand gripped the fists in which she held the gun. She gasped and tried to shoot but her hands were twisted before she could make any move, the gun dropped from her hands and she fell to her knees weakly giving out a loud scream, the pain from her twisted arms speedily transferring through her whole body.

'Get up,' Tarasha pulled her up and turned her body, making her back lean on her chest. She placed an arm around her neck tightly and a gun to the side of her head.

'Move back or I blow off her brains,' she threatened as she marched out holding the female Inspector as an hostage. The officers all stood at alert, pointing their guns towards Tarasha but none could pull the trigger at the sight of their boss.

'Drop your guns,' Tarasha shouted at them. They remained firm with their guns, most of them having their torchlights in their mouths while Tarasha had the light on her forehead. She cocked the gun placed at the side of the Inspector's neck and stopped at the middle of the entrance.

'Drop your guns,' Inspector Sandra squealed out in pains. The officers obeyed slowly and one after the other. Tarasha waited until the last one obeyed the order before taking two steps forward.

'Now everybody move back, ' Tarasha ordered again. The men were hesitant for a while until she tightened her arm around inspector Sandra's neck again. They move back slowly until they all got to the spot she directed them with her head to, far away from their vehicles and where they dropped their guns to the middle of the road. She looked downwards and whispered something. The permeable iron cover placed over the drainage to allow for vehicles passage in through the gate was pushed up noisily and Aisha got out of the place, dusting off her body.

'Get in and drive out that bus,' Tarasha ordered Aisha, pointing back into the compound.

Aisha walked past Tarasha into the compound without saying anything. She turned to the place the bus was parked and entered into the driver's side which was still opened as Tarasha had left it when she drove in with it. The engine had automatically gone off after some minutes. Aisha started the vehicle and began to drive out the bus in reverse motion. Tarasha moved to the side of the fence to allow the bus pass.

It took close to three minutes for Aisha to drive to a free space because of the police vehicles parked in front. Then Tarasha joined her in the bus still holding Inspector Sandra hostage.

__________

'Are we closer now?' Stone rubbed his eyes and yawned as he asked.

'Yes, just about twenty five minutes drive to the place.' the driver of the bus replied him.

'Okay... Remember that we are not getting to the place, we will stop far away and walk there to check.' Stone reminded him.

'Yes, I remember that but I'm still doubting the possibility of we not coming across any police officer or security man around the area if we walk,' the driver replied.

'I doubt that too,' one of the other guys from the passenger's seat behind supported. The number of boys in the boys totaled up to to nine.

'Are you students of Rael University also?' Stone asked, glancing at the face of the guy who joined the conversation.

'No, I'm not but some of us here are.'

'Except for the police officers that are at the place, we won't meet any other because Don with the help of Ojo has settled all the security officials around the Rael University area.' Rex said and chuckled. 'Your forces are better now but not totally free from corruption. I hear that's how Ojo pays them everytime he wants to operate. He only tells the bosses that he has a silent job to do and the bosses call off every other officers on duty and ask them to avoid the whole area.'

'Wow! I understand now why we haven't been accosted by any Security Official with our driving around for the past one hour.'

'Shh... Stop the vehicle,' Rex said, placing a finger on his lips. He was looking through the front glass at something coming from afar.

The driver dimmed the front lights first before gradually bringing the vehicle to a halt. He turned off the engine totally.

'Are you seeing that too?' Stone asked as he glanced at the driver who was also staring towards the same direction.

They could see from afar the headlights of a bus coming towards their direction from the other carriageway, the headlights became brighter and brighter as the bus came closer.

'Could we be wrong? Are police officers on patrol?'

_______

'Boss. I can see a vehicle coming this way,' Aisha called onto Tarasha.

Tarasha rose up slowly from the ground behind the driver's seat where she sat near the hostage and looked out through the front glass. 'Could that be officers on patrol?' she asked.

'I don't know,' Aisha answered, reducing the speed of the vehicle. 'But I think they're also slowing down.'

'Take that turn,' Tarasha said, pointing Aisha towards the turn into another straight road.

Tarasha looked back when she heard sounds of slight movement, she saw the police officer dragging herself on the floor towards her slowly and trying not to make any noise, she was trying to get up silently and possibly disarm Tarasha.

Their eyes met and the Inspector paused in shock and intense fear.

Tarasha smiled wryly. 'Calm down bae, we're going to drop you off soon,' she said as she squatted before her. She touched the Inspector's fingers which was placed on the floor but the Inspector withdrew quickly and shot a furious look at her. Tarasha smiled again. 'If you do anything stupid, I'll send you to hell,' she threatened with a devilish chuckle.

Tarasha rose up and turned as the vehicle turned into another direction. 'Are they still coming?' she asked, peering through the glass.

'They halted already,' Aisha replied, increasing the speed of the car.

'Drive faster, and let's drop this officer somewhere soon.' Tarasha said. She turned and squatted before the Inspector again, 'I have an assignment for you,' she said in low tones.

The Inspector stared deeply into her eyes.

'That girl Stephanie,' Tarasha continued. 'Make sure you fish out all others who have a hand in her kidnap.'

____

'Isn't that one of our buses?' the driver asked, his eyes following the bus as it turned.

'I was about to say the same thing,' the guy at the immediate back seat joined. 'It's the same as this one. '

'A girl is the one driving it,' Stone said.

'Could that be her?' the guy behind Stone asked, directing his question to no one in particular. They watch the bus turned at a far distance and took a straight road with led to a bridge.

'Could it be who?' Stone asked, glancing back at him. Every other person's eyes also turned to him.

'I mean Samantha Osman,' he replied, stuttering.

'Don said she took out all the boys already, I believe she's the one escaping,' Stone replied, still peering towards the direction taken by the bus.

'Should we go after the bus?' the driver asked.

'Huh? Go after what?' Stone replied in such a way that panic was revealed.

'I mean the bus...'

'That's not the instruction we were given,' Stone said in defense as he could feel the eyes of all the boys on him and their minds accusing him of being fearful. 'We have to follow instructions. We were asked to help Don, not to pursue Samantha Osman.' he added, taking out his phone from his pocket. 'Start the car and continue driving,' he ordered the driver as he opened the dial pad on his phone.

'I should drive after her?' the driver asked a stupid question as he turned the key.

'F**k you! Continue in the same direction we were going before,' Stone barked at him in rage. He could hear suppressed giggles and whispers from the guys at the back, not that they also wished to go after Tarasha but watching a supposed leader scared was funny.

Stone shot a furious look at them as he placed the phone to his ear, they maintained silence immediately. The driver turned the vehicle into the road and continued in a straight direction.

'Stainless, we just saw Samantha Osman drive by...' Stone said into the phone.

____

'You saw who?' Stainless exclaimed, getting up from the bench he was sitting on outside the building.

'Samantha, she drove past us in one of our buses.' Stone's voice sounded from the other end.

'And what did you do?' Stainless asked in an excited tone.

'What should we have done? Attack her or go after saving Don according to what we were sent?'

'Oh!' Stainless sounded somewhat disappointed and added a sigh. 'So what are you doing now?'

'Doing what we were sent, I just thought I should inform you about it,' Stone said in a concluding tone.

'Okay...' Stainless said, not knowing what else to say. He was about to end the call when a question popped up in his mind. 'How did you...' he tried to speak but the line went off already.

He quickly opened the call records and dialled back Stone, his call was answered almost immediately. 'Hey, how did you know she was the one?' he asked immediately the call was answered. 'I don't think you've seen her before, have you?'

'We saw a girl at the driver's side of the bus, didn't Don say she attacked the warehouse?'

'Yes, he said so. How close were you to her?' Stainless asked again.

'We were...' Stone began but his voice faded away slowly.

'You were what?' Stainless asked but the immediate reply he got was silence.

'Shit! We just ran into the police officers now,' he heard Stone's voice before the line went off.

____

Eight minutes ago

'Pick your guns and let's go after them right now,' one of the senior officers in the team barked at the rest.

'We must be careful, we still need those men breathing inside.' another officer of the same rank countered him, not ready to move.

The officer who gave the first order paused to think for a second. 'But we have to save Inspector Sandra, we can't let them go with her.'

'She said she was not going to hurt her except we disobeyed,' the second officer recounted Tarasha's words.

'Are you going to believe the words of a criminal?' the first officer retorted.

'We have no choice, she threatened to kill her if she finds out we're following.'

'So do we just sit and watch?'

'No, we will get those guys who are alive, they could have some information for us, if we all leave here now, she might have gotten away already or kill Inspector Sandra like she threatened. We have a better chance of getting the criminal if we can extract information from the sedated guys we found inside but if we all leave now, the sedated guys would have escaped before we return or before another group comes here.' His phone rang out loud, stopping his co-debater from giving a counter-argument. 'Hey you... On your way? Where exactly are you?' he said into the phone. 'Drive faster...' he concluded the call. 'A six man backup team is on the way,' he said to the waiting ears of the remaining officers.

'What do we do now?' the other debating Officer asked.

The other smiled, feeling victorious that his co-debater was now asking what to do from him.

'Some of us could go after that bus while only one or two of us should stay here,' he said. 'The backup team is only two minutes far from here.'

'Who's going and who's staying?' the officer asked, already making his way into the car.

'I will stay with him,' he replied, looking towards the library security man. 'You can go with the others.'

____

**Present**

'Boss,' Stainless said into the phone, after inhaling from his cigarette. 'The boys just ran into the police.

'Right now?' Rex's voice sounded.

'Yes,' Stainless replied. He took in another drag, 'And they also claimed to have seen Tarasha from afar.'

There was a longer silence from Rex than expected. 'Was she the only one they saw?'

'Yes, she was driving away with one of our buses.'

'Did she attack them?' Rex asked.

'No, I don't think she saw them, they didn't go after her.'

'She would have killed them all if they did,' Rex said. There was silence for few seconds. 'Can your boys handle the police?'

'It depends on the number of police officers, we paid the usual ones working around the area already, the ones they meet can only be from the emergency squad and they can't be so many at this time of the day but they can increase as the day matures.'

'I'll call you back in two minutes,' Rex said, his tone suggesting he needed to attend to something urgently.

____

'I'll call you back in two minutes,' Rex said and quickly cut the call to receive the other incoming call. 'Don, where are you now?'

'I'm out of the place, I got out through the back fence immediately I noticed that the officers were far away.'

'Cool, some guys are out to pick you already, call Stainless now.'

_____

**Meanwhile, Stone and the boys immediately after his call with stainless**

'Stop right there,' The boys in the bus could hear the officers shout from the other carriageway. Luckily, the median strip separated their vehicles and there was no close contact.

'Keep driving,' Stone instructed the driver who increased the speed drastically. The only options they had were to face the officers or keep running away in the forward direction. They had passed the only close turn which route Tarasha's bus had taken, so there was no turning or going back as that would mean entering into the police hands.

The police vehicles at the other carriageway made a U-turn on the same road and sped crazily back. The resemblance of the bus they saw to the one Aisha and Tarasha drove away with had made them think it was the same bus. The way they turned the vehicles could have caused an accident on a normal day as their new direction was opposite of what the carriageway was meant for but because of the hour of the day, the roads were free of cars and pedestrians.

'I think those are the officers we're on our way to check,' Stone said as he read the inscription of the police vehicles "Rapid Response Squad". 'They're not much,' he continued. 'We may have to face them.'
