The Kogi State Government has urged residents in flood prone areas to relocate to higher ground, adding that indiscriminate dumping of refuse must be stopped to prevent flooding in the state.

Recall that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in May warned that 27 states together with 121 local government areas will experience high-risk flooding during this year’s rainy season.

The states include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bau­chi, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross Rivers, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, and Lagos.

Other highly probable states of the impending floods are Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara.

Speaking to newsmen when he visited Sarki-Noma, a suburb in Lokoja, the Kogi State Commissioner for Environmental Hon. Victor Adewale Omofaiye, urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate, stressing that there is a high level of destruction caused by indiscriminate dumping of waste in drainages.

He noted that in as much as the people would not desist from dumping refuse in waterways, the possibility of mitigating the effect of flooding will be reduced stressing that they are in the community to sensitize the people and create awareness for them to get themselves prepared for the upcoming flood.

According to him, going by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) prediction, Kogi will be experiencing flooding.

He however restated Governor Yahaya Bello’s commitment to tackling environmental issues in the state.

Earlier, the leader of the Sarki Noma community showed Omofaiye and his team around the area, expressing dissatisfaction over the position of the river in the community, which according to him always overflows during the flood and consequently destroys houses and other valuable properties.

The General Manager, Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board, Mallam Abdulganiu Sanni, advised that every household should have waste bins stressing that this would go a long way to reduce the menace of dumping of refuse in the drainages.

Also speaking, Mrs. Dorcas Enehe, Director of Climate Change, who revealed the 2021 NIMET prediction about the flood, confirmed that sensitization of the flood-prone areas is ongoing in the state.

Niger State Commissioner for Information, Mohammed Idris is out of bandits’ captivity.

He was released around 9:30pm at a location in Suleja and taken to a hospital for medicals.

Idris was seized from his residence at Baban Tunga village in Tafa Local Government Area in the wee hours of Monday.

Speaking after regaining freedom, the official narrated his ordeal and revealed why he was abducted.

Idris disclosed that the assailants came from Zamfara and were not familiar with the Suleja terrain.

He said they told him someone gave them money to carry out the act thinking Governor Sani Bello allocates N200million to his office every month.

"The person who sent them told them that if I am unable to pay N200million as ransom, they should kill me.

“They drew the picture of my house, the exact way the house is. The person that sent them and the bandits, I forgive all of them”.

The state government insists no ransom was paid to secure Idris from the kidnappers.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the family of late human rights activist, Mohammed Fawehinmi, over his death.

DAILY POST had reported that Mohammed, son of late activist, Gani Fawehinmi, died after complaining of difficulty in breathing.

A statement issued by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the deceased did justice to the memory of his late father.

Buhari also condoled with Ganiat, mother of the deceased, and the entire Fawehinmi family.

He urged the family of the deceased to find comfort in God, who gives and takes, and to draw consolation in the fact that the departed robustly fought a debilitating condition, which confined him to the wheelchair for many years.

The statement added that, “His body may have been broken, but his spirit was virile, agile, and he kept the flag of the family flying, doing justice to the memory of his late father.”

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, has insisted he didn’t influence Barcelona’s decision to allow Lionel Messi leave the club.

There was wild jubilation in Bayelsa State, on Wednesday as United Nigeria Airline (UNA) aircraft dropped the first commercial flight to commence operations at the Bayelsa State International Airport.

DAILY POST gathered that the aircraft took off from the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 (MMA2) in Lagos at exactly 3pm.

The plane had on board the state governor, Senator Douye Diri, the airline’s chairman, Chief Obiora Okonkwo, Tokyo Olympics 2021 Silver medallist in wrestling, Bayelsa-born Blessing Oborududu.

Others were King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Ambassador Boladei Igali, members of the Bayelsa National Assembly caucus as well as the state House of Assembly members and commissioners among other dignitaries.

A mammoth crowd of jubilant Bayelsans had thronged the airport from early in the morning in order to witness the historic event.

Addressing the crowd on arrival, Governor Diri said full commercial flights would commence in two weeks based on bookings made.

The governor also noted that commencement of commercial flight signalled economic development of the state by bringing Bayelsa to the world and the world to Bayelsa.

His words: “This significant event is the culmination of the aspirations that was birthed by late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, former governor of the state, which was eventually built by Senator Seriake Dickson, my predecessor. And it is under my administration that this project was crystallised. This is a demonstration that team work truly works.

“I am happy to report to you that the pilot of the United Nigeria Airline said our runway is one of the best in Nigeria. It is our determination to make Bayelsa truly the Glory of All Lands and we are making Bayelsa a construction site”.

Senator Diri also expressed gratitude to his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and his team whom he said worked tirelessly to bring the project to fruition.

Speaking on behalf of the state’s National Assembly caucus, Senator Moses Cleopas, representing Central Senatorial District, congratulated Governor Diri and Bayelsans for achieving the feat and lauded him for his visionary leadership.
